Common 2009 Saab 9-3 problems
The Saab 9-3, produced in 2009, has several common problems that potential buyers should be aware of. These issues are based on complaints from owners and include the following:
- Cooler Oil Leaks: Check the coolant under the hood for signs of oil contamination. Leaks can occur between the lubrication and cooling systems due to the chain, which can lead to expensive repairs. This issue is one of the more costly ones to fix, so it's crucial to be aware of it before making a purchase.
- Hood: For convertible models, ensure the hood operates smoothly and doesn't have any rips or damage. Raise and lower it a few times to check its functionality, as a faulty hood can affect the overall value and usability of the car.
- Interior Heating: Although not a major issue, the heating system's dial controls and knobs are known to easily crack off and split. While this is a relatively inexpensive repair, it's still something to consider when purchasing a Saab 9-3. Make sure the heating controls are in good condition and functioning properly.
- Oil Sludge: If considering a petrol-powered 9-3, check the service history to ensure the previous owner maintained regular services and used the correct oil. Using thicker oil or neglecting services can lead to costly problems with the engine.
- Strut Mounts: During a test drive, listen for grinding noises or squeaks, especially when going around corners. These noises could indicate issues with the mounts and bearings at the top of the McPherson struts in the suspension system. Replacing these parts can be expensive, so it's essential to identify any potential problems before purchasing the vehicle.
- ABS and Traction Control: Second-generation Saab 9-3s from 2002 to 2011 (excluding the 2009 model year) have reported issues with the ABS and traction control systems. Corroded wire harness connectors in the front wheel sensors could be the source of this problem. If the traction control light is illuminated, it could lead to a complete loss of control on slippery or uneven roads. Both parts must be replaced to restore the car's braking system.
- Engine Coolant Loss: Some models may experience engine coolant loss, which could be caused by various issues, such as leaks in the cooling system or a faulty water pump. It's essential to identify and address the root cause of this problem to prevent further damage to the engine.
- Power Steering Pump and Steering Rack: After 200 to 300,000 kilometers, the power steering pump and steering rack may develop problems, such as knocking or leaking. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become severe .
- Rear Wheel Arches and Suspension Components: Over time, corrosion may occur on the rear wheel arches, and suspension components, such as ball joints and wheel bearings, may wear out. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent these issues from becoming major problems .
When considering purchasing a Saab 9-3 from 2009, it's essential to be aware of these common problems and thoroughly inspect the vehicle for any signs of these issues. A full service history and regular maintenance can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the car.
What is the most common problem with the Saab 9-3?
Many owners have complained about engine failure caused by a faulty direct ignition cassette (DIC). Saab vehicles primarily use a DIC system, with ignition coils that directly go on top of the spark plugs. If there's a problem with the DIC, the engine may crank but not start.
What is the most reliable engine in the Saab 9-3?
Saab 9-3 Saloon engines, drive and performance
Eight-valve single-turbo models (120hp TiD) are generally considered the most reliable, with the 130, 160 and 180hp later twin-turbo 16-valve variants the next choice.
What year of Saab is the most reliable?
The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.
Is Saab 9-3 safe?
Dual front airbags, side airbags with head-protection and ABS brakes are standard equipment. Electronic stability control is also standard or optional on all variants. The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-04
- VIN: YS3FB49Y091
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2009 SAAB 9-3 STARTED AND RAN FINE ON THE WAY TO WORK, BUT AT LUNCH IT STARTED FOR A COUPLE SECONDS AND SHUT OFF. THE CAR CRANKS, BUT IS AUDIBLY TOO FREE SPINNING. A LOCAL SHOP SAID COMPRESSION IN THE ENGINE WAS VERY LOW, AND AFTER MULTIPLE CALLS IT SEEMS THAT MY CAR HAS THE INFAMOUS "SOFT INTAKE VALVES" PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN A WIDESPREAD PLAGUE FOR THESE CARS FOR MODEL YEARS 07-11. THIS CAR ONLY HAS 78,000 MILES ON IT, AND HAS ALWAYS HAD THE OIL CHANGED WITH THE CORRECT GM SPEC OIL. I WOULD THINK AN ENGINE SHOULD LAST MUCH LONGER THAN THIS.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-07
- VIN: YS3FB79Y096
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MISFIRES WHEN COLD, RESULTING IN ROUGH LOW IDLE SPEED AND POSSIBLE STALLING AFTER COLD START.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-12-24
- VIN: YS3FB49Y191
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY CAR HAS FALLEN VICTIM TO THE SOFT INTAKE VALVE ISSUE. MY CAR WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY, IT RAN PERFECTLY WELL THE NIGHT BEFORE. I ATTEMPTED TO MOVE IT ON CHRISTMAS EVE MORNING 12/24/2017 BUT IT WOULD NOT START. I THEN HAD IT TOWED TO MY LOCAL SAAB MECHANIC, AUTOMOTION IN BILLERICA, MA- THE OWNER SAID THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE HE HAS SEEN ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS; HE SAID HE SAW IT SO MANY TIMES HE PURCHASED NEW EQUIPMENT TO BE PREPARED FOR THE VOLUME OF CUSTOMERS. THIS IS BEING WELL DOCUMENTED AT THE SAABCENTRAL FORUM FOUND AT WWW.SAABCENTRAL.COM/FORUMS/SHOWTHREAD.PHP?T=329066 MY 2009 9-3 IS ABOUT TO HIT 70,000 MILES; MECHANIC IS CURRENTLY WORKING TO FIX THE INTAKE VALVE ISSUE AT A COST OF $2,245.00 PLUS TAX. THERE ARE 35 PAGES OF DOCUMENTED INSTANCES AT SAABCENTRAL. IT ABSOLUTELY SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED WHETHER OR NOT GM ALLOWED THESE FAULTY ENGINES TO BE IN PRODUCTION AND SOLD TO CUSTOMERS. IT HAS BEEN STATED THAT GM ALLOWED SOFT, NON-HEAT HARDENED INTAKE VALVES TO BE USED; THESE INTAKE VALVES WILL DEFORM OVERTIME AND LEAD TO THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER NOT HAVING A PERFECT SEAL.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-12-31
- VIN: YS3FB49Y991
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: THE INTAKE VALVES ARE WORN ON THE ENGINE THIS STARTED AROUND 80,000 MILES AND HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE. THE CAR WILL NOT START ON VERY COLD DAYS. IF IT DOES, IT IDLES VERY ROUGH AND HARD. DATE BELOW IS AN ESTIMATE OF WHEN THIS STARTED.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-09-15
- VIN: YS3FB79Y196
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE OWNED MY 2008 SAAB 9-3 FOR ABOUT A YEAR NOW AND I HAVE HAD AN ONGOING ROUGH RUNNING ISSUE THAT SEEMS TO BE GETTING WORSE. WHEN I START MY CAR UP IN THE MORNING IT RUNS VERY ROUGH. IHAVE GOTTEN IT DIAGNOSED AND IT IS MISFIRING DRAMATICALLY LIKE 6000 ON ONE CYLINDER AND 1081 ON ANOTHER . I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND HAD THIS PROBLEM DIAGNOSED, SEVERAL TIMES, AS HAVING BAD INTAKE VALVES. AFTER DOING MORE RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM, I HAVE COME TO FIND THIS IS A RATHER COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS SPECIFIC YEAR MAKE AND MODEL. THIS IS CONCERNING BECAUSE I HAVE HAD THIS REPAIR QUOTED AT OVER $2500.00. I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH MANUFACTURER RECALLS AND HAVE BEEN TOLD BY MULTIPLE DEALERSHIPS TO SUBMIT A COMPLAINT IN ORDER FOR THIS PROBLEM TO BE COVERED UNDER A MANUFACTURER RECALL DUE TO FAULTY PARTS. THERE IS ONLY 80,000 MILES ON THE CAR!!!!!!!!!!!
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-03-02
- VIN: YS3FB46Y291
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I WAS FIRST NOTIFIED OF THE RECALL IN 2016, BUT TOLD THAT THE REPLACEMENT PARTS NOT AVAILABLE. WHEN I GOT THE NOTICE EARLY THIS YEAR THAT PARTS AVAILABLE, I CALLED THE AUTHORIZED DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND NEVER GOT A RESPONSE. ON ONE OCCASION I SPOKE TO SOMEONE WHO SAID HE WOULD CALL ME BACK BUT NEVER DID, AND WHO TOLD ME THAT MY CAR DOESN'T HAVE THE TAMARA AIRBAG (WHICH IT APPEARS IT DOES), AND THAT NOTHING HAD HAPPENED WITH ANY SAAB. HE WAS VERY DISMISSIVE OF THE RISK.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-20
- VIN: YS3FB49Y591
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL I WAS INFORMED IN A LETTER THAT GM IS WORKING ON AIRBAG RECALL FOR MY CAR. IT STATED THAT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT MY AIRBAG CAN EXPLODE AND I MAY DIE. THEY ALSO SAID THAT IN ANOTHER LETTER THEY WILL SPECIFY WHEN THE REPLACEMENT PART IS AVAILABLE. IT HAS BEEN A WHILE AND I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING BACK SO I DECIDED TO DO MY OWN RESEARCH. AFTER CALLING LOCAL CADILLAC DEALER HERE IN NASHVILLE, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE ONLY PLACE IN TENNESSEE THAT STILL DOES SAAB WARRANTY WORK IN IN MEMPHIS. AFTER CALLING THAT DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THAT THE PARTS HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE FOR A WHILE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER SINCE MY LIFE CAN BE AT DANGER EVERY TIME I DRIVE MY CAR. I FEEL LIKE GM IS ACTING NEGLIGENT IN THIS CASE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THEY DO NOT PRODUCE SAABS ANYMORE, BUT THEY SHOULD STILL DO THEIR BEST TO SUPPORT THE PRODUCT THAT THEY HAVE PRODUCED.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-01-20
- VIN: YS3FB59Y991
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL - MY COMPLAINT IS THAT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAS HAPPENED, AND THAT THE STATUS OF THE RECALL ISSUED APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR AGO IS: "RECALL INCOMPLETE. REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE". PEOPLE ARE STILL DYING OUT THERE BECAUSE TAKATA HAS NOT YET SOLVED THIS PROBLEM. THOSE OF US WHO OWN VEHICLES THAT ARE UNDER THIS RECALL CAN'T JUST STOP DRIVING THEM WHILE WE WAIT FOR THIS PART TO BECOME AVAILABLE. SO, INSTEAD, WE EXPOSE OURSELVES TO RISK OF INJURY AND DEATH FROM AN AIR BAG THAT IS SUPPOSED TO PROTECT US IN A CRASH. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!! *TR

- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-11
- VIN: YS3FD59Y871

I CANNOT SAFELY DRIVE MY CAR UNTIL THIS IS FIXED. I LIVE IN AUSTIN, TEXAS WHERE IT IS HOT AND HUMID MUCH OF THE YEAR. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR THAT INCREASES THE DANGER RELATED TO THIS RECALL.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-10-03
- VIN: YS3FB49Y491
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: IT IS PUBLIC INFORMATION THAT TAKATA'S AIRBAGS CARRY A VERY HIGH RISK SINCE THE INFLATOR PROPELLANT DEGRADES TO THE POINT OF BRAKING THE STEEL HOUSING AND THROWING IT TO THE OCCUPANT CAUSING SEVERE INJURIES OR DEATH. IN SPITE OF ALL THESE FACTS, THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT INITIATED A RECALL AND DOES NOT PROVIDE ANSWERS AFTER SEVERAL CALLS TO THEIR CUSTOMER OFFICE. MY VEHICLE HAS A TAKATA AIRBAG ACCORDING TO NHTSA'S DATABASE, THE INFLATOR MUST BE REPLACED.

BUT I JUST PUT A GREAT DEAL OF MAINTENANCE INTO THE CAR, IT HAS 60,000 MILES AND I'M NOT IN THE MARKET FOR A NEW CAR. HOWEVER, I'M TERRIFIED TO TAKE A PASSENGER OR DRIVE THE CAR MYSELF. WHEN I WANT TO KNOW WILL MY CINCINNATI OR COLUMBUS, OH DEALER HAVE A NEW AIRBAG TO INSTALL.

- Summary: TAKATA RECALL - IT HAS BEEN OVER SIX MONTHS SINCE THIS RECALL WAS ISSUED, AND THE PARTS ARE STILL NOT AVAILABLE TO FIX A POTENTIALLY LIFE THREATENING CONDITION. IT IS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE A VEHICLE THAT MAY KILL ME IF I AM INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. WHEN WILL THE REPLACEMENT AIR BAGS BE AVAILABLE? WHY IS THE MANUFACTURER NOT MANDATED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WITHIN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME? I PERSONALLY THINK THAT SIX MONTHS IS MORE THAN SUFFICIENT TIME TO HAVE THIS ISSUE RECTIFIED.

I never planned on buying a Saab, and in fact, all I could remember at the time was how ugly the older Saabs looked. However, a friend of mine had a 2005 Saab 9-3, and the first time I rode in it, I was truly surprised. It was far from the hatchback design of the S900, and it was quick with nice fit and finish. This began my passion for these cars. I have driven a 2005 9-3 2.0T, a 2006 9-3 Aero, and two different 2008 9-3 2.0T. All the cars I had were great, although I did experience less than stellar performance in the Pirelli and Continental tires that they were putting on the cars until 2008 when the TMPS sensor option was included. I have been very pleased with the reliability of all the cars I owned and feel that the 2008 and up Model Years have the best long-term reliability. This is why I went ahead and purchased one after my lease on my first 08 9-3 ended. The overall fuel efficiency of this car is excellent and seems to beat many other makes for the power output that it gives. I worked for VW and Audi and have driven many of their cars, but I just don't feel that their 2.0T has as much power as the 9-3. Even though the 2.0T for Audi and VW has been rated very high, I know internally that there are still issues with oil consumption and slug in models that this engine has been used in, and that's why I would never purchase anything containing their 2.0T. The new styling in 08 really, for me, was a winner. I had appreciated the older design, but I wasn't a fan of all the plastic rubbing strips and trim that were visible on the outside of the car. I was happy to see that the facelift was focused on the outside and left the interior relatively untouched. The only thing that I wish had been standard on the 2.0T is a visible sports exhaust and xenon option. I really enjoy the interior, and the only thing I would have liked to see is a little less plastic and more leather-covered surfaces like on the door handles and the front panel that surrounds the radio and instrument cluster.I've noticed that leather stays in good condition if you maintain it. However, if you don't, after about 100,000K, the driver's seat can start to look pretty rough. In older VW models that have leather, it holds up much better, probably due to several seamed portions on the seat bottoms, rather than one large piece that tends to get stretched like in the 9-3.

The gas mileage listed in your article seems inaccurate. In my experience, the Saab gets around 20-24 mpg in the city and 29-32 mpg on the highway, making it one of the better cars on the market. Unfortunately, Saab doesn't always get a fair shake from the press or internet outlets. I encourage you to drive one and form your own opinion. Many people who own a Saab end up buying another one.

I have been a SAAB enthusiast for 6 years now and I absolutely adore these machines. Recently, I purchased the SAAB Turbo X, one of only 600 that made it to the States, and it is truly an amazing car. The only thing GM helped SAAB with was their electrical systems, which are much better now. The dealer was kind enough to offer me more than $12,000.00 off the sticker price, and I got the car for $32,000.00 out the door, with tinted windows and front clear rock chip protection at no extra cost. They were very accommodating and eager to make a deal. Now is definitely the time to buy, as they are offering great deals. The XWD system is rock solid, and I couldn't even break it off the road. Overall, this is a fantastic car!

Disclaimer alert- Hi there! I just wanted to share that I absolutely loved the SAAB convertible concept years before I was able to buy one for myself. I started with a 2006 9-3 Sedan 2.OT, just to get into a SAAB (I had owned less expensive convertibles before that time). As smitten as I was by the handling and the look of that 9-3 sedan, I missed having a convertible so much, so I decided to trade it in for a convertible two years later. I purchased a like-new 2008 convertible 9-3 model in 2010, and my goal was to keep it looking as new as when I purchased it. Well, it's 2017 now, and it really looks the same as it did that first test drive. All biases aside, here's my take- it's a fantastic deal for the money, especially now. This is a car that was designed with safety in mind, and has pop up roll bars, safety alerts, and a number of airbags. It's also a tremendously fun car to drive. The four cylinder 2.0 turbo has plenty of power, and the turbo lag is fairly minimal, though I love the sound on a quick acceleration. The car is responsive, quick, and rides fairly quietly for a convertible. It's also pretty well insulated in the winter, and gets excellent traction with the right tires. I have the cold weather package, which is a must in the colder climates. As I sit here, I can't think of any unplanned repairs, either. It's been remarkably reliable (knock on wood). My only complaint is that I need to apply my high beams in more remote areas at night because the headlights aren't that bright (I had low beams installed, and that helps). But, other than that, this car feels like it was built for the long haul, and I plan on keeping it for a very, very long time. April 2019: I still have this car, and my feelings haven’t changed. This car still looks and feels like new at 78k miles (it’s now the fun “extra car”). GM skimped on some of the interior technology then, so it seems a bit dated now. It’s not a deal breaker, though. It’s a great car. February 2021:I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that my Saab is still going strong. I took it in for an oil change today and it's still so much fun to drive, especially on a winter day. We did have to replace the vacuum pump, but overall it got a great bill of health. With 79K miles on it, I'm thrilled that we haven't had any major surprises in the 10+ years we've been together. And that turbo sound never gets old! The interior tech is a bit dated now, but I still love my Saab more than my 2020 Cadillac XT5...not even close ;). Looking forward to many more years with my trusty Saab! Best regards, [Your Name]

After researching manufacturers such as Audi and BMW, I chose the Saab Aero Convertible. It had everything I was looking for: fun to drive, great performance, curb appeal, amenities, and an affordable price. The 6-speed manual transmission is a blast to drive and performs like a champ. The car has a sleek look and is small on the outside, but surprisingly comfortable on the inside. I absolutely love the Xenon lights and the Bose Stereo. The 2008 model was the perfect price point for me, and the steel gray with black top was meticulously maintained with only minor wear noted. Plus, the key fob is really cool! While some may criticize the interior materials, I don't think it's a big deal.

Although my Saab has a great turbo pick up, I have experienced some issues with the electronics. Despite having them repaired, the electronic locks still do not seem to work correctly. The frequent and costly repairs have caused me to reconsider my ownership of this vehicle. While I understand that repairs are expected for an older vehicle, the constant and expensive repairs have become a burden. Recently, I had my vehicle towed to the dealership where they replaced the battery. Although it worked for a short period of time, it is now sitting in my driveway and I cannot afford to have it towed for another repair. However, I am confident that I will find a solution to this issue and get my Saab back on the road soon.
