Common 1991 Dodge Caravan problems
The 1991 Dodge Caravan is a reliable minivan, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. One of the most frequently reported issues is transmission failure. Some owners of the 1991 Dodge Caravan have reported that their vehicle would jerk, lurch, and hesitate, indicating a problem with the transmission. This issue can be particularly concerning, as it can affect the vehicle's drivability and overall safety.
Another common problem with the 1991 Dodge Caravan is electrical issues. The most-reported problem for the 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan is power door locks not working, which can be frustrating for owners. This issue is often attributed to a faulty key or internal switch, which can cause the door locks to malfunction. In some cases, drivers have reported that a beep confirmed that their doors were locked before driving, but upon checking later, they found their doors unlocked. Some owners have been able to restore their power door lock's function by removing and replacing the 20 amp fuse.
The 1991 Dodge Caravan's four-speed automatic transmissions are also known for their unreliability. While the 3.3 engine was designed entirely by Chrysler and produced 150 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, the reliability of the 3.3 was matched by the unrelibility of the four-speed automatic transmissions. This issue can affect the vehicle's performance and drivability, and may require costly repairs.
In addition to these issues, the 1991 Dodge Caravan's air conditioner compressor is known to have problems. The compressor can fail, causing the air conditioner to stop working. This issue can be particularly concerning in hot weather, as it can affect the vehicle's comfort and safety.
Overall, while the 1991 Dodge Caravan is a reliable minivan, it is important for owners to be aware of these common problems. By staying informed and addressing any issues promptly, owners can help ensure their vehicle remains safe and reliable for years to come.

This is my 3rd Caravan, and even after 245000 miles, it still runs strong. The body has held up well, and the interior still draws comments on how nice it is. Unfortunately, the AWD has quit working, but otherwise, this is a strong running vehicle. All of my Caravans have been exceptional.
-
This van is fantastic! It's an all-round functional and reliable vehicle that looks great too. I really wish they still made a model in this body configuration. The short and boxy design makes it easy to park and roomy for cargo, which is perfect for my needs. It's an amazing value as a used vehicle and parts are readily available. I live in Mexico where the roads can be rough and the rules are often ignored, but this van gives me the confidence I need on the road. It's proven to be easy to maintain, extremely practical, and resistant. I absolutely love using it for camping because I can fit a ton of gear plus friends in the van, and a queen-sized inflatable mattress fits perfectly in the back (with the seats out) for secure sleeping.

Repeated failure of Dodge Caravan transmission control module ...
Oct 23, 2012 ... I'm willing to bet you're problem lies somewhere in the harness, whether it be a wire or a pin in one of the connectors. Its just all too common ...

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned you bought your car new in 1991 with a 3.0 V6 engine. It sounds like you've had some trouble with it over the years, having to replace the transmission twice, the engine gasket, and the radiator twice. It's a shame that the air conditioning never seemed to work properly. However, it's impressive that your car is still going strong after almost 300K miles! It's great to hear that it's in good shape, even though the paint may not be looking its best.

We purchased this van with the hopes of having a good quality vehicle that would last many years. Although we were able to make it last for many years, we had to replace the transmission (twice), the water pump, the alternator, the radiator and other items as well. Unfortunately, the interior is falling apart, the paint is peeling off and the electrical has given us fits. After the water pump failed a second time, we decided to retire it. We had a good run with it, but it's time to move on. We won't be purchasing a Dodge minivan again.
