Common Peugeot 505 1989 problems
The Peugeot 505, produced from 1978 to 1992, was a large family car known for its durability and ruggedness. However, like any vehicle, it had its share of common problems that potential buyers should be aware of.
- Rust: The 505's chassis and frame were built to last, but if the car has spent its life in a humid climate, it may have rust issues in common problem areas such as wheel arches, floorpans, and sunroof surrounds. If importing a 505 from a humid region, a thorough inspection is recommended.
- Electrical Faults: Pre-1982 models may experience intermittent electrical faults due to oxidation of the connections in the fuse boxes. Upgrading to the newer fuse boxes can solve this issue.
- Automatic Gearbox Maintenance: Automatic gearboxes in the 505 benefit from preventative maintenance, such as replacing the oil filter mesh and oil every 25,000kms, to improve shift smoothness.
- Sunroof Motor: Some 505s may experience stripped gears in the sunroof motor, which can be fixed with a parts car.
- Tail Light Lens: Cracked tail light lenses may also be an issue in some 505s, and can be replaced if needed.
When considering a Peugeot 505, potential buyers should keep these common problems in mind and budget accordingly for any necessary repairs or maintenance. Despite these issues, the 505 remains a popular choice for those seeking a practical and durable family car.
