The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.

The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.

The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-09-10
  • VIN: KMHHN65F86U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH AFTER PURCHASING THIS CAR NEW (AND LESS THAN 1000 MILES ON ODOMETER), I STARTED EXPERIENCING SLIPPING IN THE CLUTCH WITH SEVERE LACK OF ACCELERATION. THE DEALER REPLACED THE CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL UNDER WARRANTY, AND STATE AT THAT TIME THAT THE HAD ALREADY PERFORMED SIMILAR REPAIRS ON THAT MAKE/MODEL. NOW IN AUGUST, 2012, (65,000 MILES) THE CAR HAS HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL. EXTREME LACK OF ACCELERATION HAD MADE THE CAR UNSAFE ON A CITY STREET, LET ALONE ON A FREEWAY. THE MECHANIC HAS STATED THAT HE HAS NEVER SEEN A FLYWHEEL SCORCHED THIS BADLY. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING STANDARD TRANSMISSION CARS FOR 30 YEARS, AND HAVE NEVER HAD A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-06-26
  • VIN: KMHHN65F56U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AFTER A COUPLE MONTHS OF OWNING MY VEHICLE, MY CLUTCH WENT OUT. I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS THE WAY I WAS DRIVING AND THAT THE CLUTCH WOULD NOT BE COVERED IN THE WARRANTY BECAUSE IT WAS A WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE AND NOT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. SO I HAD TO PAY TO GET A NEW CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL INSTALLED. NOW AFTER ABOUT 5 YEARS, MY CLUTCH WENT OUT AGAIN. AFTER THIS TIME HOWEVER, I DECIDED TO DO SOME RESEARCH AND WAS APPALLED AT HOW THIS PROBLEM HAS AFFECTED SO MANY PEOPLE. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-11-07
  • VIN: KMHHM65DX6U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: AFTER I SHIFTED FROM 1ST TO 2ND GEAR, I TRIED TO ACCELERATE BUT THE CLUTCH SLIPPED. WHEN I COMPLETELY TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR I FELT AND HEARD A MILD CLUNK AS IT WAS FINALLY ENGAGED. THE RPMS WERE AT ABOUT 2000 AND I WAS ONLY TRAVELING 5 MPH WHEN THIS FIRST OCCURRED. I CONTINUED TO SHIFT THROUGH THE GEARS WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS. ONCE ENGAGED AFTER A WHILE, IN EACH GEAR, I PRESSED DOWN ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL APPROXIMATELY HALFWAY TO SEE WHAT IT WOULD DO. THE RPMS SHOT UP AND NO POWER GOT TO THE WHEELS. THE CLUTCH SLIPPED IMMEDIATELY. I COULD NOT MAINTAIN SPEED GOING UP SOME HILLS WITHOUT THE CLUTCH SLIPPING. I AM LOOKING IN MY REAR VIEW MIRROR TO MAKE SURE I DON'T GET HIT FROM BEHIND. THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY BUT NOT CONSISTENTLY. I HAVE TO SHIFT AT A MAXIMUM 2,500 RPM FOR IT TO NOT SLIP. I DON'T BELIEVE THE VEHICLE COULD MAINTAIN ANY SPEED ABOVE 50 MPH WITHOUT THE CLUTCH SLIPPING. THERE IS A PROGRESSIVE GROANING SINCE THIS FIRST STARTED. I CAN FEEL IT IN THE PEDALS AND STEERING WHEEL AS WELL. NOTHING IS DRAGGING AND THE FLUID LEVEL IS AT MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATIONS. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS FOR OVER 26 YEARS, IMPORTS AND DOMESTIC. I NEVER HAD A CLUTCH FAIL BEFORE 150,000 MILES. THERE ARE THREE WAYS TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT; HIT THE BRAKES TO AVOID, STEER TO AVOID, AND ACCELERATE TO AVOID. I HAVE LOST 33% OF MY CAPABILITY TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT DUE TO PRE-MATURE FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH. THE OWNER'S MANUAL STATES "IDEALLY, CORNERS SHOULD ALWAYS BE TAKEN WITH GENTLE ACCELERATION." THIS IS CURRENTLY IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE THE CLUTCH SLIPS WHEN I TRY TO DRIVE THAT WAY, ON BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT HAND TURNS. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-03-03
  • VIN: KMHHN65F86U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2006 HYUNDAI, TIBURON GT WITH THE 2.7 LITRE V-6 AND 5 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. I HAVE HAD A RECENT PROBLEM WITH THE CLUTCH SLIPPING. I HAVE LOOKED ON LINE AND READ ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH THIS ISSUE. BEFORE I BOUGHT THE CAR (NEW IN 2006) I READ ABOUT THE CLUTCH ISSUES ON LINE AND THOUGHT THAT WITH THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT SETTLED, THAT THE ISSUE WAS RESOLVED FROM THE EARLIER MODEL YEARS. WHEN YOU GET SOME RPMS ON THE VEHICLE (ABOUT 4000), AND JUST BEFORE YOU UP-SHIFT THE CLUTCH STARTS SLIPPING. THE CAR HAS ALSO STARTED GRABBING AND SLIPPING FROM A STANDSTILL. I GUESS I HAVE BEEN LUCKY, I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MINE SINCE MAY OF 2006 WITH VERY LITTLE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-09-30
  • VIN: KMHHN65F16U
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I WAS IN FAIRLY HEAVY TRAFFIC TRAVELING 65-70 MPH AND ANOTHER CAR SWERVED IN FRONT AFTER PASSING ME (ON THE RIGHT) AND WHEN I WENT TO APPLY BRAKES THEY WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE. I AGAIN APPLIED BRAKES AND NOT ONLY DID THEY NOT WORK THEY ALSO DIDN'T DISENGAGE THE CRUISE CONTROL. I STARTED TO PANIC AND APPLIED THE CLUTCH AND TRIED TO DOWNSHIFT. I HAD SECONDS TO RESPOND AND A GAP IN TRAFFIC BEHIND ME SO I NEEDED TO GET OVER TO RIGHT SHOULDER AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE (I WAS IN THE LEFT LANE) I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND STARTED TO APPLY THE HAND-BRAKE SLOWLY AT FIRST. AS I ENTERED THE RIGHT LANE AND NEARED THE SHOULDER (OUT OF TRAFFIC) I APPLIED THE HAND BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD AND SIMULTANEOUSLY TURNED OFF THE IGNITION WHEN THE CAR HAD SLOWED ENOUGH. I SHOULD ALSO MENTION THAT UPON COMING TO A STOP THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS SOLID AND STAYED ON EVEN AFTER SHUTTING DOWN AND RESTARTING THE CAR. IT REMAINED ON UNTIL I GOT THE CAR TO THE NEAREST DEALER. I'M OK AND IT COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE (NO DAMAGE TO ME OR CAR) BUT THE DEALER WHO SERVICED THE CAR TOLD ME THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE COMPUTER WAS SENDING ERRONEOUS CODES TO MULTIPLE 'SYSTEMS' AT ONCE. I HAVE THEIR REPORT AND THE DOCUMENTATION ON THE SOFTWARE UPDATE THEY APPLIED TO THE CAR'S COMPUTER. THEY DIDN'T REPLACE THE COMPUTER JUST THE SOFTWARE! THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE IN ANOTHER SITUATION. IT WAS SCARY AS HELL AND I'M STILL SOMEWHAT SHAKEN. I'D RATHER BE PROACTIVE ABOUT BRINGING ATTENTION TO THIS THAN IGNORING THE INCIDENT AND THE FACT REMAINS THAT I HAVE NO IDEA IF THE NEW SOFTWARE PATCH THAT THE DEALER APPLIED TO THE COMPUTER IS ABLE TO PROTECT MY SAFETY. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-05-01
  • VIN: KMHHN65F36U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY CLUTCH WENT OUT OF MY CAR AFTER THIRTY FIVE THOUSAND MILES. I UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS A WEAR ITEM BUT I KNOW HOW TO DRIVE STICK AND THAT IS WAY TO SOON FOR IT TO GO OUT. NOW IT HAS BEEN ANOTHER THIRTY FIVE THOUSAND MILES AND IT IS GOING OUT AGAIN. I TALKED TO OTHERS WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE 2006 HYUNDAI TIBURON. WHEN THE CLUTCH WENT OUT IT WAS FINE ONE DAY AND GRABBING AT THE FLOOR THE NEXT IT DIDN'T GET PROGRESSIVELY BAD. OTHER TIBURON OWNERS WERE ONLY GETTING TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND MILES OUT OF THEIR CLUTCHES, SO CLEARLY THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM. *TR

2006 Hyundai Tiburon recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2006 Hyundai Tiburon.

2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

We assure you that we will do our best to resolve the issue and provide you with a reliable vehicle. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  2. Brooks Goyette 2025-02-07

I've been through a lot with this car. The color and style of the car always got attention. I've had it for 4 years now. The first year was good, but then the radiator went out and had to be replaced. The brakes were complicated and I took it to two places, but they couldn't fix them and it was costly. Finally, I started taking it to Sears Auto because they can do the brakes very well with this car. Then the driver's side door went out and I had to climb in and out of the car for a while until I finally got it fixed by a mechanic. The tires were replaced many times in this car. It's a gas guzzler, unfortunately. When it came to the 4th year at 114,000 miles, it failed to pass smog because the cat and O2 oxygen sensor were causing the monitors to fail when going for smog. I drove it many miles and took it to many places, but no one could fix it. I was sad because the love of my life was driving and dependable and still working. Also, I now had another addition to my family and this car was getting too small for us. I took it to Hyundai and ended up walking out with a 2015 Hyundai Sonata.

Although I love this car, it is concerning that multiple problems continue to arise and they are quite costly. It appears that clutch problems are a common issue with these cars. As a single mom, I cannot afford to deal with these costly problems.

I purchased a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon in 2007 with only 9k on the odometer. Although it ran fine initially, I encountered some issues with the O2 sensor less than a year later. Despite replacing it, the same issue persisted, leading to a frustrating cycle of replacements. Additionally, the car has been causing excessive tire wear, despite proper alignment, resulting in less than 16k miles on 30k mile tires. I have also had to replace the brakes, and the sunroof and lock motor on the driver's side door are no longer functional. Recently, I had to fix a radiator hose that was leaking at the thermostat housing, and the radiator itself cracked in a spot that I still cannot explain. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address any issues that may arise with my car.

I previously owned a Sonata before purchasing a brand new Tiburon GT in March of 2007. Unfortunately, at just under 19K miles, the clutch and flywheel failed and Hyundai refused to cover it under warranty. They dismissed the transmission failure as though I did not know how to drive a manual transmission. Additionally, the wheel bearings failed on three separate occasions. The V6 engine is quite thirsty, resulting in low MPG, and the car has a tendency for under-steer. There are also some tricky blind spots until you get used to it. It's worth noting that Hyundai's have a lower resale value. Despite these issues, the car is fun to drive, and I would highly recommend purchasing an extended warranty.

The tiburon is a fantastic car, but it depends on which model you have. The GT's have had some issues with the transmissions (clutch, flywheel, shift forks, etc.), but these can all be delayed (if not prevented entirely) by not driving the car like a Ferrari. I chose the SE because it had more options and creature comforts (I live in the northeast, so the mirror defrosters are especially handy.) The car may feel heavy in fast turns, but that's just how it feels. Once you get the hang of the seemingly slow steering and the delay on the clutch, you'll really start to enjoy the sporty feel of the extra notchy 6-speed gearbox. In conclusion, it feels like an expensive sports car in an import's clothing.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Tiburon. I bought it brand new with only 45 miles on it and I absolutely loved everything about it! I just wanted to take a moment to express how safe I feel in this car. Recently, I was in an accident on July 6th where I hit 4 trees going over 100 mph. I'm not sure why I was going that fast, as my memory of the crash is gone, but I'm so grateful to say that I don't have any broken bones or serious injuries. When I see pictures of the car after the crash, I can't help but feel lucky to be alive. I truly believe that the car had a lot to do with it. Thank you, Hyundai, for building such a safe car!

Are you considering purchasing a car, but want something unique? If you're tired of the same old 4-door sedans that all look and drive the same, then fear not! I was in your shoes just a year ago. The 2006 Hyundai Tiburon is an amazing sports car that stands out from the crowd with its engaging and creative look. It's comfortable to ride in and has some serious power under the hood. While it's a quick car, it's not necessarily a fast car (there's a difference). In the year that I've owned it, I've driven 20,000 miles and have had zero problems. And did I mention that it's also affordable?

I absolutely fell in love with the Tiburon the first time I saw it. Finally, in 2009, I was able to purchase one for myself. It was my first sporty car and I adored the sleek design. Unfortunately, after driving it for a few months, I started to experience some trouble getting out of the car, which led to some back problems. So, I decided to give the car to my husband who absolutely loves it. Looking back, I think I would have had the same back problems no matter what low-to-the ground car I had driven, but it has nothing to do with the Tiburon itself. At one point, the car stopped dead on the street when it reached 58,000 miles. Luckily, we were still within the warranty period (barely) and ended up getting a completely new engine under the warranty!

This car is a fantastic and reliable sport compact. Its design is definitely eye-catching, as I've had both young kids and older men in their 50s or later ask me about it. At around 22 grand for the SE six-speed model that I have, it's an affordable option for those experiencing a mid-life crisis. It gets an impressive 26mpg, and while the 172hp output of the V6 could be improved to around 230hp, it's likely that the lower output is to honor the 10-year, 100,000-mile drivetrain warranty. Overall, it's an excellent car for the price.
