2016 Jeep Compass problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year, and is currently in its second generation. The first generation Compass and Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep's first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. It is positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee globally or the Commander in South America.

Concept

Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.

The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car's styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.

Common 2016 Jeep Compass problems

The 2016 Jeep Compass has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine stalling and transmission overheating.

One of the most common problems is the engine stalling, which has been reported by nearly half of the 187 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Another significant issue is the transmission overheating, which can also lead to engine stall. This problem has been reported by several owners, who have experienced loud whining and grinding noises while driving, slipping gears, slow acceleration, and stutters.

In addition to these problems, the 2016 Jeep Compass has also been criticized for its weak engine, firm ride, and cheap cabin materials, which have been cited as reasons for its poor resale value and less desirable status compared to other SUVs in its segment. However, the safety risks associated with the engine stalling and transmission overheating make it a less than ideal choice for a used compact SUV.

In conclusion, while the 2016 Jeep Compass has some positive features, such as its affordability and decent amount of features, it is plagued by several significant problems related to the engine and transmission. These issues have prompted safety concerns and have contributed to the Compass' poor resale value and less desirable status compared to other SUVs in its segment. Therefore, potential buyers should carefully consider these factors before purchasing a 2016 Jeep Compass.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
  • VIN: 1C4NJDEB9GD
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I bought my 2016 Jeep Compass Latitude in September of 2021 with a warranty which because of some rotor and other issues they gave me a loaner vehicle while they did the repairs for a week or so. It didn't give me too many problems for a while but then in these last two years or so then a lot has been breaking on it or acting up & I only got a little over 86k miles on it, but any warranties are expired at 80K. I've replaced the battery, the rear hub/bearings 2x, all of the rotors & brakes 2x now, I go through engine oil even though I do regular oil changes on it, and most recently it was doing a "death wobble" that was so unsafe I was afraid to drive it myself let alone have my son with me in case it did it & it was very unpredictable when it would happen too, generally over 45 mph and after I had been driving for over 15 minutes would be the most likely time for it, unfortunately not always though & the 1st mechanic I took it too couldn't even get it to do it. The 2nd mechanic suggested changing the driver brake line to the caliper to see if that helped since I'd just replaced that brake caliper but that the majority of my front end suspension, hub/bearing & axle, spring coils, etc. would all need replaced because of how worn out they was already looking too (it was exactly 86003 miles when I went to the 2nd mechanic) and if it was still doing it after that then he would figure it out, thankfully replacing the brake line seems to have stopped the "death wobble" problem for now. I'm not sure this is even a valid complaint, if not then I apologize but I've never seen so many parts, issues at once, esp. with that mileage. The unpredictable "death wobble" is definitely a safety concern at least & incase others have all these costly problems at once too. I just got my jeep paid off & have to have cervical & lumbar surgeries asap so I will just have to fix it asap. Originally, via Mopar site, I was here trying to find my jeep's specific specs/build sheet for those parts.

Fortunately there was not a lot of traffic and I was able to coast to the berm of the road. The check engine light came on. Family members came to help. We started it a few times and tried to drive but would only get a mile or two and the same thing would happen. I had to have it towed to a repair shop near my house. The mechanic drove it the next day to see if it would act the same way. He also lost power and it stalled again. He told me that the code that came up was a crankshaft sensor failure. He replaced the part the next day.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-22
  • VIN: 1C4NJDEB7GD
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: In the summer of 2020, my front passenger headrest spontaneously popped while I was loading my child into the back of my car. The noise was scary and the popping could've easily hurt someone if there had been anyone sitting in the front seat. I contacted my local Jeep dealer quickly who informed me that there was a recall and that I could get a replacement. The replacement took well over a year to come in and wasn't replaced until October 2023. This entire time, the passenger headrest was popped out making it uncomfortable to sit and also decreasing the safety for that passenger. Now, just two months after it was finally replaced, the front passenger headrest popped AGAIN while my husband was driving and I was sitting there. Again, it was a very loud, scary noise and the jolt was both painful and shocking. This is extremely dangerous and I'm very disappointed that it happened again after taking a very long time to be fixed. I would like to know my options moving forward.

Negative 2016 Jeep Compass car reviews

  1. Dee McClure 2024-11-20

Rental while own car is repaired. Although we were given a basic model with limited seat adjustments and a harsh ride, it served its purpose. The car was a bit noisy and slow to get onto freeways, but it got us where we needed to go. The radio/cd player was outdated and there was no USB port, but we made do. The interior lighting controls were a bit confusing, but we eventually figured them out. Overall, it was a decent rental car for the price.

  2. Ewald Cummings 2024-11-13

The 2016 Jeep Compass is a great car, although its fuel mileage is not ideal, with only 10 mpg in both highway and city driving. However, it is important to note that this issue was addressed in later models. It is unfortunate that you had to get rid of your Jeep, but rest assured that newer models have improved fuel efficiency.

  3. Ali Stark 2024-11-12

This Jeep was quite a ride! Although it was a bit loud and bumpy, I was lucky to have rented it. The new car smell was definitely a plus. I did not have to fill up again before getting to Las Vegas from L.A., which was great. However, I think I prefer my Hyundai's pick up. Overall, I would not buy this car, but it was a fun experience to rent it.

  4. Kaleigh Jenkins 2024-10-28

I recently rented a Jeep Compass for a trip to DFW and unfortunately, my experience with the car was not great. Despite being almost brand new with only 6k miles, the vehicle had a lot of squeaks and rattles, which was surprising given the competition in the segment. If you're considering buying the Compass, I would recommend test driving a Rav4 or CRV and comparing the vehicles. It's also worth noting that the Compass may have lower resale value compared to Honda or Toyota. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision!

  5. Israel Weissnat 2024-10-28

The SUV's performance was disappointing, with the 2.4 liter engine lacking power and struggling to find the right gear when going uphill. The interior design was not up to par, with a cheap look and feel due to the excessive use of plastic. Additionally, there was only one plug-in for GPS and no USB port, which may be inconvenient for some users. The seats were uncomfortable both in the front and back, and there was limited cargo space. The 4-wheel drive lever and knobs were poorly placed, and the radio had limited reception. Overall, there is room for improvement in this SUV.

Positive 2016 Jeep Compass car reviews

  1. Ed Funk 2024-10-17

Don't hesitate to buy one! I've owned this car for 23 months and have had no problems handling it, even going around corners rated at 45mph. I even had this car hit at 60mph and it still had no problem. Passing is also a breeze. The negativity is uncalled for.

  2. Crawford Green 2024-10-14

I drove from Pittsburgh to Buffalo, NY without any issues. I was able to put the car on cruise control and enjoy the ride while getting good gas mileage and having plenty of cargo space. However, I found that the car was not spacious enough for me and I kept bumping my head getting in and out of the car. Despite this, the car had a great navigation system. Based on my experience, I would not purchase this car for myself.

  3. Nils Sauer 2024-08-03

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that your SUV is really nice! It's clean and runs great, and I love that everything is original. Keep up the good work!

  4. Lane Beer 2024-08-01

I just purchased my new baby on 3/30/16, brand spanking new, fresh off the showroom floor. This is my first mini truck. I used to drive a Scion back in 2010. Long story short, I am loving the Jeep life. It has a smooth ride and is very comfy, just right for someone who's 26 with no kids.

  5. Hilbert Hane 2024-07-15

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that I hit a deer head on and thankfully there was no damage to my car. Plus, it's great on gas!
