2019 Jeep Compass problems

The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year, and is currently in its second generation. The first generation Compass and Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep's first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. It is positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee globally or the Commander in South America.
Concept
Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.
The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car's styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.

Common 2019 Jeep Compass problems
The 2019 Jeep Compass has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, electrics, powertrain, and brakes.
- Engine Issues: The most common complaint about the 2019 Jeep Compass is to do with the engine, with 57 drivers contacting the NHTSA. This includes the Compass stalling while driving or not starting at all, with no obvious cause for these issues. These problems could be potentially dangerous, especially if the car stalls while driving.
- Electrical System Faults: Another 45 complaints are related to the electrical system, though many of these are the same kind of issues with starting the car or having it switch off while driving. This could be due to software or programming issues in the electrical system, causing inconvenience and potential safety risks.
- Brake System Failures: 19 people have complained about the brakes, with the emergency brake system activating randomly, unexplained noises coming from the brakes, or the handbrake failing, leaving the vehicle rolling away. These issues could lead to accidents and pose significant safety risks.
- Additional Problems: Other common problems with the 2019 Compass include headlights stopping working, unintended acceleration, airbags not inflating, and windscreen wipers coming off. While many of these are more annoyances than serious mechanical failures, any of them could pose major dangers when things go seriously wrong.
- Transmission Issues: Another common problem that owners of the 2019-2022 Jeep Compass are experiencing is transmission issues. Many owners are reporting that their vehicles are experiencing a loss of power, hard to turn steering wheel, or complete failure to turn. These issues could be related to the Compass’s steering system, and may be caused by software or programming issues.
- Powertrain Issues: Transmission issues are often accompanied by powertrain problems, which can lead to a loss of power, stalling, or difficulty shifting gears. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged components, software glitches, or low transmission fluid levels.
- Suspension Issues: Suspension problems can cause a variety of symptoms, including a rough ride, excessive bouncing, or difficulty steering. These issues can be caused by worn or damaged suspension components, such as shocks or struts, or by issues with the vehicle's alignment.
- Steering Issues: Steering problems can be caused by a variety of factors, including worn or damaged steering components, low power steering fluid levels, or software glitches. These issues can lead to a loss of power steering, hard to turn steering wheel, or complete failure to turn, posing significant safety risks.
- Poor Fuel Economy: Many owners of the 2019-2022 Jeep Compass are reporting poor fuel economy, with some vehicles consuming more fuel than they are supposed to. These issues could be related to the Compass’s engine, and may be caused by software or programming issues.
These problems have caused frustration for owners of the 2019 Jeep Compass, with some vehicles experiencing multiple issues and requiring frequent repairs. If your 2019-2022 model Jeep Compass has been back to the dealer multiple times for repairs, or has been out of service 30+ days, you may want to consider pursuing legal action under state or federal lemon law.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-18
- VIN: 3C4NJCBB8KT
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Stop/start stalling and shutting down at intersection. When lifting foot off the brake, vehicle may start up again just briefly but then stalls out. The vehicle has been stuck in traffic, at high risk for an accident. I have been successful in restarting the vehicle thus far to resume driving. Behavior can occur multiple times a day or once a week but it has been present for >2 yrs. Problem has been reported and inspected by local dealership but, per the dealership, unable to replicate on demand. Solution provided has been to replace both batteries but remedy is short lived. Dashboard error: Auto Stop/Start Not Ready/Unavailable . This error appears after the engine stop/start stalls and engine shutdown but goes away when car is restarted
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-03
- VIN: 3C4NJDBB7KT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The UConnect screen that comes with the Jeep Compass purchased and many other Jeep models during this time period has an apparent systematic lifetime problem. The vehicle has less that 40K miles on it and the screen started to appear discolored with lines distorting the images a couple of months ago, and would get progressively worse as the car heated up. The screen has gotten progressively worse to the point where it now does not display anything after ~30 seconds of being in the car. We are bringing the vehicle to a Jeep dealer today, but from looking online this seems like a very prevalent issue with Jeep Compasses and Jeep models. Without the screen, several safety features and namely the requirement of a backup camera display are completely unavailable.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-15
- VIN: 3C4NJDDB3KT
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I Just left the dealer regarding a wiper related recall and my wipers continue to malfunction. They turn on intermittently. When I slow down and then begin to accelerate the wiper system turns on. I have video after leaving the dealership that performed the recall. *I'm not able to upload video here. Also note: The recall was out during covid, which at the time I could not take in, and 1-2 years after covid aftermath, I forget about any letters for a recall. Had I done the recall repair then I might not be having this issue which may have progressed and now I'm out of warranty (?) I just don't think it's fair. The recall is wiper related. How can they not offer to fix it 100%. Had the recall not addressed "wiper" malfunction then I could see not arguing. I believe this recall is related somehow. Is it a safety concern? You bet it is. My engine power flickers. I could be in a risky situation crash and now Chrysler- Jeep risks a multi million dollar law suit. I have video. Who can I send this to?

This happens when the car is not hot, there is plenty of coolant etc. When this happens the fobs also will not work. It has happened 4 times the last two weeks. My safety was put at risk because I was in the middle of driving when my car died in the middle of the road. Yes the vehicle was inspected and the batteries were replaced. We have replaced the coolant sensor and flushed everything and replaced the pcm 2 times. Still the same problem. A safety issue as you lose power when this happens. Service was all done at an authorized Jeep dealership. The majority of the time this happens is during a turn. Today I lost power on a turn with oncoming car. We have spent $1400 trying to repair the problem with new replacements and the problem remains. The car is available for inspection. No advance warning when this happens. I have repaired everything I can think of when it comes to this issue . I turned to the internet for more ideas/ootions … turns out there is sooooooo many more jeeps especially the compass that have the same issue … how can this not have a recall … my kid who is only 16 and just got his license almost got rear ended at an intersection because the car shut off and wouldn’t start … he had to wait over 10 minutes before it started again so he could move the car .. it has been to the garage many times and not one can pin point what the issue is .. I just get told it’s a jeep thing ! I’m afraid to shut my car off when I stop at the store or bank … if I know I’m going to be somewhere for a while I have to ask for a ride because I don’t know if my car will start … i have to try to start my car way before I need to , to give it time to “Reset” then it will start …

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
- VIN: 3C4NJCBBXKT
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The auto shut off function while stopped has malfunctioned on a couple occasions. One was when stopped at a red light. The car would not start up again when letting off the gas. The vehicle was new to me and I didn't know how to fix the problem. Sitting there, even with hazards on, is dangerous as I could have been rear ended while trying to figure this out. I ended up having to restart the vehicle. I can disable the function, but I believe it is causing starter issues with the vehicle. The vehicle intermittently will not start right away, and finally will after several attempts. All possible problems that could cause the start issue have been tested by mechanics at an auto shop. All of which were eliminated. There are no warning lights that have come on when either of these things happen. The vehicle is available for inspection, if requested.

WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- VIN: 3C4NJDBB3KT
- Components: WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: A knocking noise has slowly come into play from the hood of my 2019 Jeep Compass. With some research, it appears to be the front driver’s side axle causing this noise while in operation. The knocking sound is caused by the CV joint at the end of the cv axle shaft. As the cv joint wears down, it becomes less able to absorb shock and vibrations. If I were to continue driving with a damaged CV, the joint will disintegrate further, making driving impossible. I will not be able to control the vehicle and may get involved in an accident. This issue is out of my control unless I simply don’t drive it. This is also a stock part that wasn’t expected to need replacing within 5 years of having the vehicle. My current mileage is roughly 76,000 miles to which I don’t drive more than I need to.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

- VIN: 3C4NJDCB8KT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: In February I took my car for an oil change. I went out of town and when I returned my car would not start. I replaced my key fob battery and I charged the battery because a jump did not work. Once battery was charged we were able to get my car to turn on. I took the car for battery testing at auto zone and nothing came back. I took the car to the dealership (Jeep Dealer) they said both batteries were original and needed to be replaced. I paid for both to be replaced. A few days later I was driving m, came to a stop light and when the light turned green I went to press the gas the car dashboard glitched and turned completely off I was in the middle of the road. I started the car back up and called the dealer immediately and took it in for service. The dealer said it was a reset that needed to be done and computer update. A few days later my car did the same thing only this time it gave a few messages on the dashboard and I was able to turn it back on. The deal ship kept my car for a couple more days. The did more updates and returned the car. I had no issues for a few weeks with turning off however when I turn the car on it would glitch as if it did not want to start. Also, the start/stop feature stopped working completely. One morning I started my car on my way to take my child to daycare the car glitched again but turned on I drove maybe 500ft and I got a message on the dashboard “stop safely vehicle will turn off soon” I pulled over and turned the car off and back on the message was gone. A month later I got the same message but I kept driving and nothing happened. A week later I drove to drop off my child, the car was off completely and moments later when I returned the car would not start the radio dashboard lights all turned on and I could hear the car trying to start but it did not. AAA came to assist jumping my vehicle and I was able to drive the car to the same dealership. They kept the car for a week and found nothing.
STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
- VIN: 3C4NJDBB3KT
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving into a busy intersection and briefly stopped. When I took my foot off the brake to go, the car completely froze. The brake pedal was hard and the steering wheel was locked. The lights were on, however I couldn't turn the car off to restart it. It would not move. A police officer had to push the car over to the side. After waiting a while (25 minutes) for the tow truck, I was able to turn the car off. The car was towed to the nearest mechanic, but he can't find anything wrong with it. Despite, hundreds of online complaints about this same thing happening to Jeep Compasses, Jeep will not take a look at it unless I pay $490 for a diagnostic test. I already had to pay for the towing and a mechanic to look at it. Jeep Chrysler needs to recall these cars before someone is killed.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21

I’ve been to jeep and NOTHING.

- VIN: 3C4NJDAB4KT
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: It is not allowing me to check everything but the bottom line is this. It is highly inappropriate to know that there were three recalls on this vehicle it says 2 were completed there were investigations done and I do not have the ability to view them as a consumer especially whrn I was trying to buy it and now when I am trying to find out if it is related to a problem I am having. I need the full detailed list. I have asked the dealership and not received the documentation, please provide them. Thank you. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-06
- VIN: 3C4NJDCBXKT
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: after making a left turn, the engine shut off, an alert on the dashboard read the coolant temperature was too high. Then a second later the coolant alarm went away, the temperature gauge dropped back to normal and the engine started back up. This happened too fast to be an actual problem with the coolant temperature. It happened as described here: [XXX] If this had happened 3 seconds sooner, I would have been stuck in traffic while making a left turn. I'm a little shocked NHTSA has precluded this is not a dangerous issue. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-21
- VIN: 3C4NJDCB4KT
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I was traveling from Dallas to Austin for a wedding on [XXX], going the speed limit I notice my car begins to decelerate, I would put my foot on the gas and the car wouldn't speed up, I just kept hearing my engine rev up. In addition to that, a bunch of symbols, notifications and noises started alarming and going off on my dash, it seemed like every symbol on the dash popped up. Trying to prevent an accident while having a panic attack, I had barely enough time to switch lanes and pull over while still on this dangerous highway. Once I stopped the vehicle, the brake became hard to push with my foot and the dash continued to go crazy blinking on and off. After an hour or so, the car started acting fine. I eventually got back home and took it to Jeep in Frisco, TX, and they "repaired" my vehicle they replaced my auxiliary battery and the main battery. I got the car from the shop and it was fine. 2 months later, it happened again! My car slowed down while I was on the highway and this time I couldn't pull over to safety, so I put my hazards on and just prayed I wouldn't get hit and called for a tow truck. After doing some research I'm not the only jeep owner who has had this issue, others have experienced the same thing. Ultimately this is a Jeep issue. My car is basically a death trap, and I lost my job because I lost my reliable means of transportation! My car is currently sitting out front collecting dust, I don't have the money to gamble on what the mechanics THINK is the issue, they can't figure it out! I don't want the vehicle! UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-08
- VIN: 3C4NJDBB9KT
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The Uconnect screen has a black line on majority of the screen- happened occasionally at first, then every other time I started the vehicle, and now every time. I am unable to use the screen due to the malfunction which means I cannot use the back up camera, see the maps on the screen for navigation, or control heating/temp including defrost due not being able to see the screen which I feel are all safety issues to both myself and other drivers. So far an independent service center is running diagnostics- and no warning signs.

I really like it! I live in Colorado and we can get weather from anywhere. Plus, this Jeep is not just all-wheel drive, it's a 4x4! Many other cars claim to be 4x4, but they're actually all-wheel drive. With the Jeep Compass Trailhawk, you can choose between 4x4 high or 4x4 low, and it even has a 4x4 crawl or super low. When you don't need the 4x4, Jeep designed all of its Compass models to completely disconnect the 4x4 drive train, saving you gas and wear and tear. I've driven this Compass in every type of weather Colorado can throw at it, and it keeps moving through it all. I also love the start and go feature, where the motor turns off when you come to a stop. This is actually my third Jeep, and I've never had a problem with any of them. I chose this one for the gas mileage, since I drive out to my ocean lot every year on the coast. And even though it may be assembled in Mexico, the motor and transmission are made in the USA!

I really love this car! I've owned Fords, VWs, Toyotas, and Kias, but none of them even come close to the quality of the interior in this car. I was pleasantly surprised by how smooth the ride is and how well it handles. The standard technology that comes with this car is fantastic. I have the Latitude edition and I'm blown away by all of the features, including the touch screen, leather seats, and moon roof. The only downside is the turning radius, which isn't great. Overall, I highly recommend giving this car a chance - you won't be disappointed!

As of 3/18/23, we have driven an impressive 14k miles in our leased Compass since March 2019. Six months ago, we decided to purchase it off lease, and it was definitely a good decision. The SUV continues to run and ride beautifully, and we never tire of admiring its classy, sporty, and luxurious look. We did have to replace the main battery and stop/start battery, but that was expected given its age. We saved over $100 by going to Advance Auto for the main battery, and they even installed it for free. The battery offered the same warranty as Jeep but with more power and the longest and best warranty. My wife loves driving the Compass, and we take it on all sorts of trips, from short drives around town to long trips to the beach and mountains. Even during the pandemic, the mileage is still low, but the Compass continues to impress us. Although it's not as quiet as my '20 Cherokee, it's still fairly quiet. The interior and exterior are holding up as new, despite a break-in where the front passenger window had to be replaced. We recently purchased the Jeep at lease end because my wife loves it so much. The only missing accessory is cooling seats, which were not available. We plan to keep the Compass for the long haul, but we're also interested in the all-electric Jeepster if it becomes available. Since my wife hasn't put fuel in her car in over 25 years, the electric version seems perfect. We take great care of the Compass by keeping it garaged, applying Ceramic coating, and changing the oil every 3-4k miles or 4-5 months. Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with the Compass, and even my wife's sister leased one just like ours. They bought it off lease with the same good fortune, although they had to replace the start/stop battery three times. However, it seems to be fine now. Theirs is the High Altitude while ours is the Limited, but we prefer the standard features on the Limited. Besides, the Limited has 1” smaller tires and a 9-speed transmission. The mileage is creeping up slowly, just under 12k miles as of 3/17/22. The Compass continues to be flawless, although someone broke into it a couple of months ago and stole my wife’s purse and fob, and broke the passenger side window. In spite of insurance, the ordeal still cost us $1000. Nevertheless, the Compass is a very brawny-looking SUV that fits my wife’s every need. The lease is up in a few months, and we’ll probably buy it since the new ones aren’t much different, and there aren’t any significant safety updates that would cause us to get a 2022. The Compass is valued at twice the residual on the used car lot. We still wish it was a bit more quiet. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we are not driving either of our Jeeps as much as we’d like. The Compass continues to feel new, and we enjoy the good looks of the SUV. We also appreciate that we don’t see one in every driveway. The white/gray interior looks new and is easy to keep that way. We continue to feel that the ending is a bit noisy, and the Compass could use more sound deadening and front seat storage. However, we believe Jeep has addressed those issues in the new models. We have only 8500 miles on it, and if my wife continues to enjoy it, we’ll probably buy it at the end of the lease. Our Compass just had its 2-year birthday, and we brought it in to check for an entertainment system upgrade at no cost. We had it inspected and the oil changed at 8k miles. Because of COVID, we hardly drive either of our Jeeps. I also changed the cabin air filter, which was complicated but straightforward. Carol really likes the Compass. She actually turns around to look at it when she parks. It still looks like new, and there are no signs of wear. We have had our Compass for 18 months now, and we haven’t had a second of trouble with it.Driving the Compass continues to be a joy, even though it's technically my wife's car. She loves it, but I find myself behind the wheel often. I do have a few concerns, however. The steering and brakes are a bit too sensitive for my liking, and there isn't quite enough storage in the front seat area. That being said, I've found ways to manage these issues, such as getting used to the characteristics and adding an eyeglass holder and shelf to the console. My sister-in-law and a friend in NJ both got their own Compasses and love them as well. We've had ours for over a year now and have put a little over 6k miles on it, and we still love the way it looks. The tech is amazing, and it performs wonderfully on long trips with no rattles or squeaks. I don't understand the negative comments from some journalists about the transmission - the 9-speed always finds the right gear and shifts smoothly. Despite the engine noise when accelerating and the firmness of the front seats, I would still highly recommend the Compass and would buy it again. It's been easy to keep clean, even with the glacier grey interior color. The only negative I can think of at this point is that the engine can be a bit noisy, but that's just in comparison to my 2015 Cherokee v6. The auto on/off feature should be on the dash instead of the console, but other than that, the Compass is great. I love the dual color interior and exterior, and the ride is quiet and smooth. In terms of mpg, I recently got 29 mpg on two long trips. I did a lot of research before choosing the Compass for my wife, and we also looked at the Q3 and CX5.I was having trouble understanding why the lease payment was almost double when the MSRP was only a few thousand dollars more. The math just didn't add up. We looked at the updated version of our current car, the Tucson, but after leasing three of them over nine years, we wanted a change. We considered the Encore, Equinox, and Escape, but I ruled out any CUV with a CVT. That's when the Compass quickly rose to the top. I'm partial to Jeeps, as I currently own a Cherokee and previously owned a 2003 Liberty for almost 10 years. We chose a white/black limited with a light/dark grey interior and every safety feature. We've only had it for five days, but we've already bonded with it. When I mentioned the deal we received to my brother-in-law, he switched from the Rogue (they had leased Rogues for 12 years) to the Compass for his wife. He hates CVTs too. My wife and her sister love the Compass. It's quiet, comfortable, easy to drive, well put together with nice materials, and smooth. The only negative is the lack of cabin storage, but there are aftermarket products that address this. It's surprising that the HomeLink feature isn't offered. I definitely turn around to look at the Compass as I walk away. Was it a good decision? Only time will tell, but we're off to a good start.

You'll love driving this SUV! It performs really well and looks great both inside and out. The only downside is that the gas mileage could be better.

I really like the style of the Jeep Compass, and the interior is both attractive and comfortable. The vehicle is quite roomy inside, and it drives smoothly and handles very well in snowy conditions. When I had to drive up my snow-packed driveway, my Jeep drove up as if there was no snow at all! It's also a lot of fun to drive. While there are a couple of things that Jeep could improve on - namely, enlarging the storage space in the back and addressing the take-off problem, which can be a little sluggish at times - I still think Jeep has done a great job. This is my first Jeep, and I've previously owned two Cadillacs. While I still have my Cadillac CTS, it's currently sitting in my driveway because I'm enjoying driving my new Jeep so much! If Jeep continues to improve their vehicles, I'm sure they'll become the number one choice for many people over foreign SUVs. Keep up the good work, Jeep people!

When my Jeep hit 30,000 miles, I was surprised to learn that all four tires needed to be replaced. Later, at 46,000 miles, I ran into trouble while out of town for a festival. Fortunately, a kind gentleman helped me jumpstart my car and diagnosed a faulty brake pedal sensor that was draining my battery. After getting it fixed, I noticed some warning lights on my dashboard and issues with my cruise control. It seems to be related to the brake pedal sensor replacement. Additionally, my sunroof is not working and my tail lights went out recently, causing my car to not start again. As someone who commutes 88 miles a day for work, this has been frustrating. I have been waiting for a replacement part for five days now.

I drive this vehicle often as it is my work vehicle, mostly on the highway. Compared to the Patriot, it's definitely a step up. Although I have encountered some issues such as the heat control not always working and vibrations that cannot be fixed, overall it has been a reliable vehicle. The delay when pressing the gas pedal can be annoying, but the gas mileage of 28 MPG for a 4 cylinder is decent. The headlights at night could be better, however. As I will be putting on a lot of miles on this vehicle, over 25K a year, I will keep you updated.

I purchased this car brand new, but unfortunately experienced some issues with the auxiliary battery after 12k miles, followed by electrical issues, and ultimately a transmission failure after 80k miles. Despite incurring over 12k in repair costs so far, the car is now overheating. While this has been a frustrating experience, I remain confident in my decision to purchase a Jeep and will continue to explore options for resolving these issues.

The car lacks a map or GPS option, front camera, sufficient driving assists, trunk and gas door assistance, and leg room in the back. Additionally, the charging station does not charge the phone even with the original charger, and there is no sports mode. Furthermore, the screen has been malfunctioning within two months of purchase. These issues indicate a lack of features and reliability compared to my previous 2018 Rogue.

Let's start with the positives - the technology is fantastic! I really appreciate the automatic heated seats and steering wheel, as well as the seamless connection with my iPhone for navigation. However, there are a few drawbacks. While the heated options turn on when the temperature drops below 40, they can sometimes malfunction and turn on during the summer. Additionally, the keyless option can be unreliable, with occasional issues opening doors or starting the car. I've also had trouble with phone options like navigation, as my phone isn't always recognized. As someone who troubleshoots technology for a living, I know that these issues can be frustrating. Finally, the door seals could be better - when I'm on the highway, there's a steady breeze that can be quite loud. Despite these issues, I do appreciate the satellite radio and decent speakers that make the noise less bothersome. Overall, while I have some complaints, I think this car has some great features. However, given my experiences, I would not personally recommend it.
