2001 Pontiac Grand am problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Grand Am is a car model that was produced by Pontiac in various years between 1973 and 2005. Produced as a RWD mid-size car on the LeMans GM A platform in its first two generations, the Grand Am name was reused for a FWD compact car for its last three generations.

The platform actually began development intended to be the next generation GTO, but the muscle car era was drawing to a close. So, Pontiac decided to make this model America's answer to European luxury|sports sedans. The Grand Am (GA) name was derived from two other Pontiacs; "Grand" signifying Grand Prix luxury, and "Am" for Trans Am performance.

These first generation GAs had some innovative features, including a deformable urethane nose (an evolution of the Endura bumper pioneered on the 1968 GTO), and was one of only three GM cars (Olds Cutlass Salon, Chevy Monte Carlo S) to debut radial-ply tires (RTS - Radial Tuned Suspension) as standard equipment. The intermediate sized Grand Am was canceled in 1980 when it was replaced by the Pontiac 6000.

A compact-sized Grand Am, based on the GM N-platform, was released in 1985, replacing the Pontiac Phoenix. It became Pontiac's best selling car and was later replaced by the Pontiac G6, so named as it was intended to be the 6th generation of the Grand Am.

All 1973–1975 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant. The 1978-1980 Grand Ams were built in Pontiac, Michigan at Pontiac's main assembly plant and in Atlanta, Georgia at GMAD Lakewood. All Grand Ams between 1985 and 2005 were built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly.

Drivers generally report a minimum mileage of 200,000 before the expensive repairs start to pile up, while some have passed 300,000. Expect to hit anywhere from 225,000 to 250,000 on the original engine and powertrain before your Grand Am is ready for retirement.

Why is my 2001 Pontiac Grand Am overheating?

The most common reasons a Pontiac Grand Am is overheating are a coolant leak (water pump, radiator, hose etc.), the radiator fan, or a failed thermostat.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-03-21
  • VIN: 1G2NF52T91C
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS, MY VEHICLE HAS TURNED OFF WHILE DRIVING. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND THE CAR TURNED OFF. ON ALL THREE OCCASIONS I WAS COMING EITHER TO A STOP SIGN OR TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, ABOUT TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN. THANKFULLY, I WAS NOT YET IN THE INTERSECTION WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I BELIEVE THE ISSUE IS RELATED TO THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL ISSUED BY GM. SOME TIME IN 2015 I DID MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH NORTHSTAR CHEVROLET IN CLIFTON PARK, NY TO HAVE THE ISSUE RESOLVED, ASSUMING THAT THEY WERE ACTUALLY GOING TO REPAIR THE IGNITION. I NOTIFIED THEM THAT I DID HAVE ISSUES WITH TURNING THE KEY WHEN TRYING TO TURN THE CAR ON. THEY SAID IT WAS NOT RELATED, THAT IT WAS AN OLD CAR AND THE IGNITION HAD WORN A CERTAIN WAY - THAT'S WHY THE KEY DIDN'T ALWAYS TURN EASILY. THEY SAID THE RECALL REPAIR WAS TO MAKE THE HOLE IN THE KEY SMALLER SO THAT I COULDN'T HAVE HEAVY ITEMS ATTACHED TO MY KEY. THEY LOOKED AT WHAT I DID HAVE ON MY KEY CHAIN AND SAID THE WEIGHT SHOULD BE FINE, IT WAS MAINLY FOR PEOPLE THAT HAD DOZENS OF KEYS OR VERY HEAVY ITEMS ON THE KEY RING. I LEFT WITHOUT ANY CHANGES TO MY KEY. NOW, IN MARCH AND APRIL 2017 I'VE HAD MORE SERIOUS ISSUES WITH MY CAR TURNING OFF. I ALSO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH TURNING MY CAR ON IF THE KEY IS NOT PUSHED UP IN THE IGNITION BEFORE BEING TURNED. THIS IS THE CASE EVEN WITHOUT ANYTHING ELSE ATTACHED TO THE KEY WHEN TRYING TO TURN THE CAR ON. I AM FEARFUL OF DRIVING MY CAR WITHOUT HAVING THIS PROPERLY REPAIRED, YET THE DEALERSHIP INSISTS THAT THEY ARE ONLY PERMITTED TO PERFORM THE SPECIFIED REPAIR TO THE KEY ITSELF, BUT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE ANY REPAIRS TO THE CAR ITSELF UNDER THE RECALL, EVEN THOUGH IT'S THE IGNITION SWITCH ON THE CAR THAT IS NOT MAKING PROPER CONTACT TO TURN THE CAR ON. I NEED MY FAULTY IGNITION SWITCH REPLACED BEFORE I HAVE AN ACCIDENT.

  • VIN: 1G2NF52T51M
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: WE ARE HAVING ISSUES WHEN WE USE OUR TURN SIGNALS. MOST OF THE TIME OUR SIGNALS DON'T WON'T WORK UNLESS WE WIGGLE (WITH FORCE) OUR HAZARD LIGHT BUTTON. THEN WE HEAR BUZZING AND CRACKLING THAT IS MOSTLY CONTINUOUS IN OUR HAZARD BUTTON. THIS HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE DRIVING OR SITTING STILL. IT DOES STOP CLICKING WHEN WE SHUT THE CAR OFF, BUT DOES OFTEN CONTINUE WHEN WE START OUR CAR BACK OFF. THE CRACKLING/BUZZING NOISE HAS WENT ON FOR AS LONG AS 15 MINUTES . I'M SURE IT WOULD HAVE GONE ON FOR LONGER, BUT WE WIGGLED THE HAZARD BUTTON AND PLACES A FOLDED PIECE OF PAPER TO LODGE IT QUIET. WE HAVE AN EXTREMELY HARD TIME USING OUR TURN SIGNALS AT TIMES, THEY JUST QUIT WORKING UNLESS WE WIGGLE OUR HAZARD LIGHT BUTTON.. ALL OF THIS HAPPENS WITH NORMAL DAY TO DAY DRIVING. *TR

LIVING IN LOUISVILLE, TN AWAY 10 HOURS FROM HOME, I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO KEEP USING THIS VEHICLE TO GET BACK AND FORTH FROM WORK. NOW I'M FORCED TO REMAIN IN THE OUTSIDE LANE TO QUICKLY GET OVER ONTO THE SHOULDER WHEN THE CAR SHUTS OFF. THIS HAS HAPPENED NO LESS THAN 15 TIMES A WEEK, ALMOST CAUSING AN ALMOST FATAL ACCIDENT. I'VE BEEN TO A TRUSTED MECHANIC WHERE WE REPLACED THE ECM TWO SEPARATE TIMES, BUT THE ISSUE STILL PERSISTS. HAS THERE BEEN MANY ISSUES REPORTED ABOUT THE CAR STOPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF A DRIVE?

2001 Pontiac Grand am recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2001 Pontiac Grand am.

2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

Congratulations on your first car purchase! It sounds like you had quite the adventure with it. Despite a few initial issues, you were able to keep it running for a good while. Unfortunately, it seems like the repairs started to add up and it was time to say goodbye. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

The car has experienced some issues since its purchase in June 08, including trouble starting due to the security light shutting down the engine, as well as fuel and frame concerns. However, it is important to note that the car has been towed 17 times. Despite these challenges, the car remains a dependable mode of transportation.

I purchased my Grand Am back in 2004 with only 38k miles on it. Just last week, I traded it in with 103k miles and received a trade-in value of $900 from the dealership. While I did experience a few minor issues such as two electrical problems, a broken driver's side power window, both rearview mirrors breaking, the oil change light constantly being on (even after an oil change), the Trac system light coming on when turning sharp corners, dials falling off, and the radio volume fading in and out, I never had any major issues. The last problem I encountered was the car puttering every time I stopped at a red light, as if it wanted to stall. I got a tune-up hoping it would fix the problem, but unfortunately, it did not. Overall, I loved the car, but it was time to let it go.

I bought this car without doing a lot of research first, which turned out to be a mistake! I was initially drawn to its sporty look, but unfortunately, it has been one headache after another. I have had to replace the water pump, the brakes multiple times, and the traction system is not up to par. Even little things like the heater knobs have broken off, and the heat only works on high. Both rearview mirrors have broken off for no apparent reason, and the turn signal switch went bad. To make matters worse, my mom's full-size truck gets better gas mileage! Needless to say, I am doing a lot of research for my next car!

The car has been experiencing issues with hesitation at high RPMs and multiple lights on the dashboard. Despite having spent a considerable amount of money on small mechanical problems, the issues persist. Additionally, the passenger and driver doors have become misaligned and are hitting the fenders without any apparent cause. While these problems are frustrating, I have never been stranded and have always been able to find parts for replacement. It is important to note that other owners have reported similar issues. I am confident in my ability to address these problems and find a solution that will ensure the car runs smoothly.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car repairs. My mechanic was able to fix the gasket for under $500, even though it was caused by the type of antifreeze I was using. I've had to take my car in a few times over the past five years, but each time it's never cost me more than $500. I've put 75K miles on it and it's still running great! I'm only selling it to get a car with less mileage. Just make sure to maintain it well and you shouldn't have any problems. Overall, I'm really happy with how it was built and how it runs. The antifreeze issue was definitely unfortunate, but thankfully not too expensive. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hey there! It looks like there's room for improvement in this one. Let's work together to make it even better!

  3. Jamal Gorczany 2024-07-16

I purchased this car about a year ago with 157,000 miles on it. The previous owner used to drive on gravel roads frequently, which caused some wear and tear. I had to replace a hub and an outer tire rod. Additionally, the security light would come on, causing the car to not start for 10 minutes each time, and the idle would stay at 1200 rpm. However, I was able to fix both problems by cleaning the sensors after pulling out the ignition. The car has an excellent sound system and I was able to get 37 mpg on my last road trip, which was impressive. Although I have put about $700 into it, I only bought it for $1500. If you take care of it, it will treat you right, but if you don't, it will let you know. My car now has over 170,000 miles and still runs like a champ!

Although I have had to make several repairs to my vehicle, I am confident in its overall performance. Fortunately, all of the repairs have been covered under warranty, which is set to expire soon. The fuel delivery system, front tires, battery, and computer have all been replaced, but these repairs have not been too significant. While the car does experience a pulsating vibration at idle when using regular octane gas, this issue can be resolved by using higher octane fuel. Although I would have preferred a manual option for the GT, I am still satisfied with my purchase. Additionally, I have replaced the front brakes after normal wear and tear. Overall, I am confident in the quality and performance of my vehicle.

This car is really awesome! Words can't do my baby justice. The engine is great, the transmission is good, and it's a very reliable performer too! My 1999 Grand AM went 92,000 miles with no problems and purred like a tiger at the time of trade-in.
