The Hyundai Equus (Korean: 현대 에쿠스; RR: Hyundai Equus) was manufactured and marketed by Hyundai Motor Company from 1999 to 2016 over two generations, as a full-size car, four-door, five passenger luxury sedan with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The nameplate deriving from the Latin, equus, meaning "horse."

In 2009, Hyundai released the second generation with a rear-wheel drive platform. As of August 2014, the second generation is sold in South Korea, Russia, China, United States, Canada, Central America, and South America — as well as in the Middle East under the Hyundai Centennial nameplate.

On November 4, 2015, Hyundai officially announced it would move the Genesis model to Hyundai's new luxury vehicle division, Genesis Motor. The 2016 successor to the Hyundai Equus was rebranded as Genesis G90 (EQ900 in Korea until 2018).

Common 2011 Hyundai Equus problems

The Hyundai Equus, introduced in 2011, was a bold move by Hyundai into the luxury car segment, designed to compete with the likes of Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Lexus LS at a significantly lower price point. However, not all model years of the Hyundai Equus have good reliability. This article will focus on common problems with the 2011 Hyundai Equus based on complaints from owners.

Suspension Issues

Suspension problems are a significant concern for 2011 Hyundai Equus owners. Many owners have reported that the vehicle rides very rough, with one complainant claiming the car's front suspension unexpectedly failed, leading to the front of the car sinking and causing the car's body to come alarmingly close to the ground on flat roads and even scrape against the ground on hilly terrain.

Brake Issues

Brake problems are another area of concern for 2011 Hyundai Equus owners. Some people reported outright brake failure, with the pedal going all the way to the floor when applied. This issue can lead to severe accidents and major injuries for the driver and other people on the road.

Engine Issues

Some 2011 Hyundai Equus owners have reported engine problems, with the car surging or dieseling at cold start, causing it to hit the garage door. This issue can be dangerous and cause significant damage to the car and garage door.

Other Issues

Other issues reported by 2011 Hyundai Equus owners include glovebox scuffing, drift to the right, front seat problems, and squeaky right-side doors. These issues can be frustrating and affect the overall driving experience.

In conclusion, the 2011 Hyundai Equus has several common problems, including suspension, brake, engine, and other issues. These problems can lead to severe accidents and major injuries, affecting the car's overall driving experience. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these issues before purchasing a 2011 Hyundai Equus.

REAR BRAKES WERE NEW, REPLACED FRONT PADS, BUT BRAKE PEDAL STILL GOES TO THE FLOOR. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR GENESIS HCU , WHICH HAS THE SAME PART AS THIS CAR, THE COST OF REPAIR IS $3000. THE CAR HAS 39000 MILES , I BELIEVE THE CAR HAS A DEFECTIVE HCU, SIMILAR TO THE SISTER CAR THE GENISIS WHICH WAS RECALLED. IT IS DANGEROUS TO DRIVE, THE REPAIR COST IS ENORMOUS AND FORCES PEOPLE TO KEEP DRIVING WITH DEFECTIVE BRAKES. DRIVING WITHOUT NEEDING TO STOP SUDDENLY THE CAR WORKS FINE. ONLY WHEN TRAFFIC STOPS SUDDENLY DO YOU NOTICE THE NEED TO PUT THE FOOT TO THE FLOOR , AND IT TAKES 100 EXTRA FEET TO STOP. THIS IS AFTER REPLACING ALL PADS AND HAVING THE SYSTEM CHECKED. AT THE BRAKE SHOP. I DRIVE LESS THAN 500 MILES A MONTH AND HAVE HAD 2 NEAR ACCIDENTS.

SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-12-14
  • VIN: KMHGH4JF5BU
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: AFTER SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS TO FIND A SERVICE CENTER OR AUTHORIZED DEALER TO ADJUST MY ALIGNMENT, I FELT IT WAS NECESSARY TO FILE A COMPLAINT REGARDING MY CONCERNS ABOUT MY VEHICLE'S FRONT TIRE ALIGNMENT. MY MOST RECENT EXPERIENCE OCCURRED ON DECEMBER 14, 2016 AFTER GETTING A NEW SET OF TIRES FOR MY CAR. INCLUDED IN THE TIRE FITTING SERVICE WAS A WHEEL ALIGNMENT CHECK AND ADJUSTMENT. HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE ENCOUNTERED ISSUES WITH A SERVICE CENTER SAYING THEY ARE UNABLE TO ADJUST MY FRONT CAMBER AND CASTOR ADJUSTMENTS BECAUSE THE "MANUFACTURER DOES NOT SPECIFY" WHAT THESE ALIGNMENTS SHOULD BE. PERHAPS THE STRANGEST PART ABOUT THIS IS THE FACT THAT THERE ARE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE REAR WHEELS. I HAVE EVEN CONTACTED SEVERAL HYUNDAI AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIPS HERE IN INDIANAPOLIS AND THEY TOO INDICATE THEY ARE UNABLE TO MAKE THE PROPER ADJUSTMENTS. MY LAST RESORT WAS TO CONTACT HYUNDAI USA TECHNICAL SERVICE TO SEE IF THEY COULD OFFER ADVICE AND THEY'RE ONLY FEEDBACK WAS THAT I NEEDED TO VISIT A LOCAL AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR SUPPORT ..... FORTUNATELY, I HAVE NOT BEEN IN A LIFE-THREATENING SAFETY SITUATION DUE TO THIS DEFECT BUT WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY ADJUST THE ALIGNMENT MY TIRES WILL NEVER WEAR PROPORTIONATELY. THIS IS INCREDIBLY CONCERNING BECAUSE THE TREAD LIFE ON ANY TIRES I HAVE INSTALLED ON MY CAR CONTINUES I LESSEN. I FELT INCLINED TO REPORT THIS ISSUE TO THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION BECAUSE I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT'S IMPACTING ALL HYUNDAI EQUUS OWNERS. IT IS ALSO CONCERNING THAT NO ONE SEEMS TO HAVE THE RIGHT ANSWER ON HOW TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. ATTACHED YOU WILL FIND PAPERWORK FROM MY MOST RECENT ATTEMPT TO GET THE WHEELS ALIGNED . I AM HOPEFUL YOU CAN HELP BRING LIGHT TO THIS ISSUE AND HELP CORRECT AND FUTURE PROBLEMS FOR ALL EQUUS OWNERS.

Negative 2011 Hyundai Equus car reviews

  1. Gideon Torp 2024-08-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Equus, which I bought brand new in May 2011 in Toronto, Canada. Overall, I was really happy with it, but unfortunately, I experienced some sudden acceleration issues in August 2014. I took it back to the dealership to get it checked out, but they couldn't find anything wrong. It happened again twice in the evening of April 2, 2015, and even the engineer and technician from Hyundai Canada couldn't find anything wrong. I didn't feel safe driving it anymore, so I decided to trade it in for a Genesis Ultimate. I only put about 52,000KM on the Equus, but unfortunately, the trade-in value wasn't as good as I had hoped. I didn't have much of a choice, as the trade-in amount would have been even lower if I had gone to a different dealership. Thanks for listening to my story!

While Hyundai has some great inside features that rival those of top brands, it may not yet be considered a luxury car. The external appearance of the car is not as visually appealing as some other luxury cars, but this is just my personal opinion. I recently traded mine in for a Lexus LS 460 and I am very happy with it, although it is more expensive. The Lexus offers a better external and interior design. However, I do believe that Hyundai is on the right track towards becoming a luxury car brand.

Before signing any paperwork, make sure to turn on every light and check every single sensor. Pay special attention to the TPMS sensors and rear vanity reading lights, as I missed the rear reading light and they wanted to charge me $500 to replace it. If I hadn't test driven the car and noticed the TPMS sensor light, it could have cost me a small fortune. Luckily, I caught it in time. However, they keep saying that the part is on back order, so we will have to wait and see what happens...

Hey there! Just wanted to let you know that I'll be replacing my car with the g80 this fall.

  2. Alford Hermann 2024-11-16

It's a Hyundai! What's great about this car is that you get to keep $20,000 or more in your pocket when you choose it. It comes with front and rear cameras, adaptive cruise, Alcantara headliner, powered sun shades all around, a refrigerator, recliner, and an LCD screen in the back. Plus, there's a remote for the reclining, vibrating, heated, and cooled rear passenger seat. It's also 1000 pounds lighter, which makes a big difference. On the highway, it gets 28 MPG! Update: 3/2016 - I'm still loving the Equus. I haven't had any problems since I purchased it. Just remember to rotate your tires side to side with every oil change (front and rear are different sizes) to avoid premature wear. It was a bit surprising to hear that Hyundai doesn't have a

This review is for our 2011 Equus. Prior to this, we owned four Lexus LS sedans (1990, 1996, 2001, 2005). The car is by far smoother and more comfortable and outperforms anything we have ever had. However, we have experienced dead battery issues at least six to eight times. It's frustrating, but we think we have identified two possible reasons. Firstly, it's very easy to accidentally touch the 'Trunk Release' button when entering or exiting the car. The trunk lid doesn't open, it just moves up perhaps a quarter of an inch or so. So, unless you grasp the trunk and try to open it and/or slam it, you never realize this has happened. The trunk light comes on, and a few days later, dead car! Not sure about the latest model, but some Hyundais (new Sonata and Genesis) open the lid all the way when the button is pushed, which is obvious. So, we suggest two fixes: 1) Retrofit to raise the lid completely or at least several inches, and 2) Install a timer that automatically shuts down any accessories/lights that are accidentally left on, which many competitors have. Our dealer and we presume Hyundai refuse to consider this 'fix' and instead are prepared to remove the trunk light! Another contributing factor seems to be that if the car is not driven for a couple of weeks, the existing systems seem to run the battery down. I installed a trickle charger, but the dealer removed it. Sadly, the dealer and Hyundai have spent more on service calls and battery replacements than they would have to do a 'fix' to the problems! At this point, we may be looking for a 'lesser' car but one that is reliable! It would be wonderful if someone at Hyundai or our dealer who is able to make decisions would contact us. Meanwhile, the car is gone for at least 3-4 days again! Update as of Oct.2016: Trunk light removed. Trunk still opens 'on its own'. Third battery installed by dealer (under warranty). We are driving the car more, which helps maintain the battery. The dealer reconnected trickle charge cables so if not driven for two weeks or more, we can hook up to the charger.Despite the aggravation, we absolutely love our car! It's the smoothest, quietest, and most powerful car we've ever owned. We're sad to hear that Hyundai has dropped the Equus name and replaced it with the Genesis G 90. However, we plan to keep this car for a long time and enjoy it as much as we can. We receive many compliments on its looks, which makes us feel proud to own it. As of 10/2017, the battery issue seems to have been resolved. According to a WSJ article, all high-end cars have issues with battery drain, but we believe that the last battery installed may be of better quality. We drive the car at least once a week and have had no more dead battery issues. In our opinion, Hyundai made a mistake by dropping the Equus name after spending six years and a lot of money promoting it. The current G 90 is not as appealing as our 2011 Equus. Finally, we believe that this car is 90%+ of a Mercedes 'S' for about 55% of the price, which is a great value for us.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoy the forward-looking camera. The ride and comfort are excellent, with plenty of convenient features. While I could do without the ashtrays, I would appreciate a bit more storage in the front. The auto-closing trunk is a fantastic feature. Having driven LS 460s for 20 years, I was hesitant to switch to the Equus, but the incredible value convinced me. I have no regrets about my decision. I don't feel that I need the 5-liter engine or 8-speed transmission, and I would highly recommend this car to anyone. It is a fantastic machine, and the service at the dealership has been excellent so far.

When people ask about my car, I love telling them it's like a Korean Mercedes. The ride is so smooth and cloud-like, with no road noise. The adaptive cruise control was a bit tricky to get used to at first, but now I can easily switch between highway, town, and heavy traffic control. The only downside is the cost of updating the navigation maps, which can be quite expensive and time-consuming. It would be great if the updates were free like on a Garmin. Overall, I'm really happy with my car!
