2021 Jeep Compass problems
The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year, and is currently in its second generation. The first generation Compass and Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep's first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. It is positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee globally or the Commander in South America.
Concept
Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.
The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car's styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.

Common 2021 Jeep Compass problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2021 Jeep Compass, common problems with this vehicle include:
- Poor Gas Mileage: The 2021 Jeep Compass has been criticized for its poor gas mileage, with some owners expressing shock at the high fuel consumption compared to other vehicles. This issue has been a significant point of dissatisfaction for many owners, highlighting the need for improved fuel efficiency in the Compass.
- Check Engine Lights: A common complaint among owners is the frequent appearance of check engine lights, typically around 20,000 miles. When this light comes on, owners need to use an OBD-II scan tool to identify the issue, which can lead to repair costs ranging from $50 to $500.
- Electrical Problems: Some owners have reported electrical issues, including malfunctions in the radio and climate control systems. These problems have caused frustration among owners, with delays in getting replacements and poor customer service experiences exacerbating the situation.
- Brake Wear: Excessive brake wear has been noted by Compass owners at around 10,000 miles, particularly affecting the front brakes. Replacing the brake pads costs around $150, and if new rotors are needed, the cost can increase to $300. This premature brake wear has raised concerns about the longevity and maintenance costs of the vehicle.
- Software and System Malfunctions: Owners have experienced issues with the start-stop system not functioning, stabilizer bar rattling, gearbox malfunctions, and oil leaks from various components like the crankcase and shaft seal. These malfunctions can impact the overall driving experience and require timely repairs to ensure the vehicle's proper functioning.
These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the 2021 Jeep Compass, ranging from performance-related concerns to electrical and software malfunctions. Addressing these issues is crucial to enhance the overall reliability and satisfaction of owning a Jeep Compass.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: 3C4NJDEB7MT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: The touchscreen started flashing off and on and the dash lights also turn off and on. The lane assist and fuel warning pop up even when there is ample fuel. The blinkers do not respond when it is glitching and the high beam/ low beam light disappears on the dash. I have taken it to the dealer twice and they said their were multiple codes triggered in the touch screen/radio and they cleared the codes but it started doing this again a few days later. The 2nd time they downloaded an update to Uconnect system, I have reset the uconnect system back to default and remived all paired devices and even just turned off the entire radio but it continues to effect the dash lights and also effects the inside Temperature which gets stuck. The dealer said they will have to find time to try to figure it out and I do not even have an appointment scheduled yet and they don't seem confident about a solution. I have looked online and have seen many people with uconnect having these issues and it does not seem safe due to not being able to see the dash at night in particular and the blinkers being effected. I am not sure if they still blink on the outside of the vehicle.

The vehicle failed to start after the chip was installed, causing the dealer to remove the new computer chip and replace it with older chip. - Summary: I purchased this vehicle not quite a year ago. After about 3 months while turning I noticed a knocking sound coming from the left front of the vehicle while turning. When I was able I took the vehicle back to dealer who stated it was the rack and pinion. I was told by a local mechanic if not repaired it can come a lose cause you to loose control causing accident. After I was told this I researched an found several other jeep owners had this same problem. My vehicle now has 58k miles on it had only 32K when purchased I did get warranty dealer refused repairs I would like jeep to investigated because some complaints are not listed with nhtsa seems owners just repair it an move on or just complain ask questions on internet. I feel jeep should be held responsible an thus should be recalled before someone is killed.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
- VIN: 3C4NJDDB3MT
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: My 2021 Jeep Compass Trailhawk has been in very good condition until the ac recently just started to blow hot air. When I took my jeep in for a routine oil/filter, my local auto mechanic said that upon visual inspection the a/c clutch (part of the a/c compressor) was melted and that I would need a whole new a/c compressor assembly, possibly replace the drier, and completely flush the system. I can't believe that for a fairly new car in very good condition this type of problem shows up. I called Jeep and they said that there is no recall on the a/c compressor for my jeep. However, my mechanic that is now working on fixing the issue said he has to wait a few days for the compressor kit parts as it was on backorder, so there must be other similar issues ongoing. I would like to know how I can get reimbursed for a problem that should not be happening with a 2021 Jeep in very good condition? I am not sure if this is a jeep class issue. Thank you, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
- VIN: 3C4NJDCB6MT
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When I turned on my vehicle, I saw about 10 different error messages flash across my dashboard like it was having some sort of exorcism, and then it stopped. No errors were on the dashboard. Everything looked good. I waited a few minutes and my driveway, and then took off for work. As I was making my way out of the neighborhood. I was going about 10 mph, it wasn’t until I pulled out to my neighborhood onto incoming traffic to cross the road that I realized that the gas pedal was not responding and the car was just rolling at like preset 10 mph speed. I hit the gas pedal many times and the car didn’t respond. Thankfully I was able to get in the middle lane to avoid a collision, but it was very scary and I consider this to be a tech defect high severity , I called my dealer and they said it’s gonna be a few hundred dollars to look at it and that’s totally not OK
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-23
- VIN: 3C4NJCBB9MT
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: This was a rental vehicle. My concern is the emergency brake switch. It was accidentally activated by a passenger when they were trying to pickup a coin that had fallen where the switch is located while traveling at 40 mph. The emergency brake immediately engaged and an unsafe condition was encountered. Fortunately, an accident was avoided and we resumed our trip. My concern is a child or passenger can activate the switch in these vehicles where the switch is located in the center console resulting is an accident causing harm or injury. This switch needs a protective cover of some sort or disabled while the vehicle is in motion.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- VIN: 3C4NJDBB5MT
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The Check Engine light came on and the temperature gauge went all the way up. Putting it in Park and restarting cleared the Check Engine light and the temperature gauge was right back to normal. Almost like nothing had happened. Thankfully it was a small intersection with no other traffic. But could this happen on the freeway?
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- VIN: 3C4NJDBB0MT
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My jeep compass has turned off on me a couple of times as I have been driving. At high speed on the highway and driving in my jobs parking garage arriving to work. Brake coolant has came up on the dash board and the car has stopped running and locking immediately. I have had to restart my vehicle. My safety and others were put at risk as it could have caused a major accident on the parkway that I take to and from work. as well as other drivers around me. There has not been any other warnings or messages or symptoms prior to the shut offs on my vehicle. I took it to the dealership and they keep saying nothing is wrong with my vehicle. This vehicle has put me in danger! & i do not feel safe until it is resolved.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-28

The indicators on my dashboard panel were blinking on and off. It also said my car was on but it was not. The MPH gauge when i tried presssing the stop/start button would slightly move up and back down again. I was able to get my car into neutral but the emergency brake was on and it would not release. After 20 to 30 minutes i tried the start button and it thankfully started back up. I was in an industrial area. Semis and lots of cars and i was unable to even move my car off to the side of the road.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-18
- VIN: 3C4NJDBB5MT
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When I was driving all a sudden it started having a weird chugging feeling. I was going 40 MPH. Then when I got to a stop sign, my vehicle completely shut off. I have to hit the button to turn back on as it was not the Auto Start and stop feature. I made it home and as I pulled into my driveway it shut off again. When I start it, just it warming up it shuts off. When I come to a stop sign or traffic light it shuts up in the middle of the intersection. All while this is happening the emergency brake flips on without me turning it on. I have to wait 2 weeks to have it looked at by the Jeep Dealership. My safety and daughters safety was put at Risk because anyone behind us could hit right into the back of us while it malfunctions or oncoming traffic could hit us while it stalls while turning in a turning lane. I did take it to a repair shop and they couldn’t pull any codes as it was locked out but it was reproduced and shown to them the malfunction. There have been no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of problem prior to the failure besides 2 months ago, I was reversing slowly out of a parking spot at Maverick and it felt like something hit the back of my jeep. But no one had. Not sure if this has anything to do with the problem occurring now. Both very concerning. Miles at that time was 34056 and miles as this issue happening is 37000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-22
- VIN: 3C4NJCBB5MT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: On multiple occasions my 2021 Jeep Compass will have a "Coolant Temperature to High," and then shut my car off. So far I have been able to turn it off and it comes back on. I have taken it to our local Jeep dealer and they basically said there is nothing they can do. The safety issue is that it has just stopped while I am in motion in the middle of traffic risking a collision from the sudden stop. The dealer had it for 3 days and was unable to recreate the problem or find any issues. My Jeep worked fine with no other issues. It has never missed a maintenance appointment and never caused other problems.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-01
- VIN: 3C4NJDBB6MT
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Error message on dash "Coolant Temperature Too High" and vehicle shuts down. This is happening multiple times. Sometimes it happens multiple times in a week and won't do it for a couple months and then it starts to happen again. Sometimes the vehicle will self resolve after 5-10 seconds and let me keep driving, other times it will shut down and make me restart the vehicle. After restarting, the vehicle is fine as if nothing happened. This has happened going 5-10mph and has also happened driving down highways at 60mph. In some instances, this is happening when stopped and then turning into oncoming traffic and the vehicle stalls which may cause someone to crash into me. Thankfully it hasn't happened yet. After some internet research it appears an investigation was already opened on 2019-2020 jeep compass's for this same issue (PP 22-013).

Hey there! It's worth noting that the Compass is a more affordable alternative to the Cherokee. While the design and size are pretty decent overall, it's true that the Cherokee (especially the Trailhawk trim) offers a more comfortable ride. Personally, I think the Compass would be even better if it came with the Cherokee's V6 or 2.0 Turbo 4 engine options. The current 184hp engine can feel a bit underwhelming to drive. What do you think?

I could list off 100 things I dislike about this car, but I'll try to keep it focused on the biggest issues. Firstly, the stereo. Although it looks nice and fancy, it has some issues. Like most people, I connect my phone via Bluetooth to listen to music or podcasts. However, when you start it up, the stereo defaults to radio instead of AUX, and there is no way to change that. The radio volume is twice as loud as AUX, which can be quite startling. It's a big deal, and I'm not sure why they designed it this way. Secondly, when my phone is connected to the stereo, I can listen to my music, podcasts, etc., but not Snapchat or Instagram, and sometimes not even YouTube. I have no idea why, and no amount of Googling led me to any solutions. You simply cannot get volume on snaps or IG. I hope that's not important to you. Thirdly, connecting your phone via the AUX cable. I have an Android, and when I connect via the USB cable, Android Auto comes up on my phone and takes over the entire screen. It asks if I want to install it, which is weird since it already seems to be installed. I click no, and there it is anyway, whether I want it or not, which I don't. It's very intrusive and obnoxious. Lastly, the turn signal vs seatbelts. The beeping noise the turn signals make is so extremely faint that you will often find that your signal has been on for God knows how long and you just couldn't hear it. If, however, you don't put your seatbelt on, it's like a bomb shelter airhorn going off every 4 seconds, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about either of these things. It just is what it is, because again, who the hell cares what you the buyer/consumer want. Why in the world did they make the necessary turn signal alert so tiny, and the seatbelt alert so obnoxiously loud and overbearing? Also, a Jeep is not a Prius. While most people know about the cool little feature a Prius has where the engine actually turns off at stop lights to save gas, this Jeep tries to do that and fails. Its starting back up takes a second or so, which is about a second or so too long when you are hitting the gas and telling it to go. It's not a smooth transition and has the effect of a 70-year-old trying to play basketball. Let the 20-year-olds play basketball, and let the Prius's save the gas. Jeeps should just be Jeeps. Oddly enough, there is a big fat button right by the cup holders that turns this feature off. However, it defaults to 'on' every time the vehicle turns off and on again. So the designers clearly knew some people would hate this feature and want to turn it off. But they only went halfway because you have to turn the feature off every time you start the vehicle. Yet another constant reminder every time I get in as to why I dislike this vehicle. Additionally, it's 2020, and just about every vehicle has automatic headlights, or just the kind that stay on 100% of the time. Not this Jeep. You have daytime running lights that are always on, but you have to manually turn the headlights on and off. It may sound like a little thing, but it's annoying, and could have easily been avoided. It just adds to the list of things I have to adjust every single time I drive the vehicle. Lastly, the keyless push start seems fancy at first, but it's worse, and here's why. You take your keys out of your pocket and unlock the car. You get in the car. You're probably used to putting the keys in the ignition. On this one, you don't because there is a button you push to start it. Now, where do you put your keys?Getting into this Jeep can be a bit of a hassle. The keys require an awkward stretch to get them back in your pocket, and it can be frustrating to find a place to put them once you're in the car. Additionally, there doesn't seem to be a designated spot for sunglasses. However, once you're settled in, the Jeep is a reliable vehicle. It may take some time to adjust to the settings, but once you do, you'll appreciate the gas saver and headlights. Remember to buckle up for safety, and you'll be good to go. Overall, the Jeep has its quirks, but it's a dependable ride.

My 2021 Jeep Compass Trailhawk has encountered some issues with the auto start stop and blind spot monitoring systems, as well as the locks. These issues have occurred despite the vehicle having only 12,000 miles. However, I am confident that these issues can be resolved with the appropriate service and maintenance.

We rented this car while our Ford Explorer was being fixed. Unfortunately, we found that this car did not compare to our usual ride. We experienced some glitches in the Apple car play that interrupted our phone and music. Additionally, the seats were quite hard and uncomfortable, and after a 3 hour car ride, my back was killing me. Overall, it was not the best car experience, and we are looking forward to getting our car fixed.

Although I have experienced some issues with my Jeep Compass, I am confident in my ability to address them. At around 20,000 miles, I replaced the factory tires, and at approximately 30,000 miles, I had to replace the sway bar, intermediate shafts, rack & pinion, and PRND lights. Additionally, I have replaced the battery, auxiliary battery, and sensor. While the stop start message is still on, I am taking steps to address this issue. Currently at 62,000 miles, I have noticed some brake pad noise, but I am confident that I can resolve this issue. Overall, I am satisfied with my Jeep Compass purchase and am confident in its reliability.
