2020 Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.
It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.
For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.
In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

Common 2020 Toyota Rav4 problems
The Toyota RAV4, a popular compact SUV, has been known to have several issues based on complaints from owners, as reported by various sources. These problems range from transmission defects to airbag and fuel system malfunctions.
One common issue with the 2020 RAV4 is transmission defects, which can manifest as a leaking transmission fluid or stumbling transmission. A leaking transmission fluid can lead to long-term engine damage if not addressed promptly, while a stumbling transmission can cause hesitation or delays in shifting gears, which could potentially trigger engine or transmission problems.
Another problem reported by 2020 RAV4 owners is related to the fuel tank gauge, which may read the fuel level incorrectly or stop prematurely, impacting the available driving distance and forcing drivers to make frequent stops for refueling.
Lane departure and steering defects have also been reported by some 2021 Toyota RAV4 owners, which could potentially pose safety risks during driving.
In addition to these issues, the 2019 RAV4 has been identified as the worst model year due to transmission problems, which have been the most reported problem category for this model.
It is worth noting that while these issues have been reported, they may not affect all RAV4 models or owners, and some problems may be more prevalent in certain model years than others. However, potential buyers and current owners should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making purchasing or maintenance decisions.

- Summary: I was making a turn into a turnaround on the turnpike and ended up sliding into a guardrail. I believe the brake assistance failed because although I slowed down and braked going into the turned, the vehicle felt like it had lost control and continued towards the guardrail rather than into the pathway I was turning into. My safety was at risk from going into the guardrail when my car didn't slow down as much as I would have expected. As of now, a braking problem with 2020 RAV4's has not been confirmed by Toyota but they are set to inspect the facility within the next couple weeks to collect information from the Event Data Recorder. - VIN: 2T3H1RFV6LW
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have had an "Engine Maintenance Required" warning light on since I purchased the vehicle (used) and have had it checked out by my local mechanic and the Toyota dealer. It is due to the coolant bypass valve malfunctioning. Apparently this is an extremely common issue according to the class action lawsuit and should NOT be put on the customer to pay for this when my odometer has not even hit 60k. A recall needs to be issued for this once and for all.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-01
- VIN: JTMC1RFV7LJ
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Since I've owned the vehicle it has made loud squeaking, scraping, popping, and clicking noises in the suspension and steering. When I first turn the vehicle on and use the brakes they are very loud as if they are worn. I've had the brakes checked and the dealer said the brakes are fine. When I turn the steering wheel it makes a loud crunching rubbing noise that I can feel in the floor board. My vehicle is less than 5 years old and less than 60,000 miles. I've never had a vehicle made so many noises and it's terrifying to wonder if something is just going to break off or stop working.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
- VIN: 2T3G1RFV8LW
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: The coolant bypass valve is needing to be replaced. The vehicle only has 52k miles and just happened after warranty.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 2T3H1RFV3LC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: While driving with the air conditioner on a message appears on the instrument panel ENGINE MAINTENANCE REQUIRED. From researching this message on the internet it appears this is due to an engine coolant bypass valve problem. From this internet search it appears to be happening to many other peoples Rav4. The cost of having this valve replaced appears to be close to $1000. It appears that this problem is a common thing. Toyota needs to have a recall on this problem. Most people report this happening at various mileage.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-29
- VIN: JTMDWRFV1LD
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: This vehicle is equipped with a power back door (PBD) that has begun to malfunction. March 29, 2024 was the first occurrence of the PBD malfunction when the opened back door would not fully close after clicking the appropriate button on the electronic key switch. There were no warnings that preceded the malfunction. The PBD would only close the back door a few inches before stopping. Additional clicks only closed it a few more inches and manual closing (requiring significant pressure) was required to fully close the door. Additional random occurrences of this PBD malfunction have happened over the past six months and have now become so frequent that on September 30, 2024 I turned off (via the multi-information display) the PBD function and must now resort to fully manual opening and closing of the back door. Based on multiple other complaints filed with NHTSA for this particular vehicle (2020 Toyota RAV4; NHTSA ID Numbers 11572353, 11572802, 11573768, 11579590, 11585733), I inspected the edges of the back door, the body's back door cavity, and the two back door spindles for damage, foreign objects, dirt, etc. that might impede PDB operation and found none. I also inspected the two back door hinges and saw no damage, no warping, no corrosion, and no movement of the hinges from their original installation locations. This PBD malfunction affects safety as the force required to manually open and close the back door is significant and operation of the back door might be impossible for people not physically able to effect the force needed. The vehicle is available for inspection and has not yet been inspected by the Toyota dealer where I purchased the vehicle in August 2020 or by others.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 2T3Y1RFV9LW

- Summary: Premature coolant bypass valve failure. Vehicle has less than 70k miles, but past warranty, "Engine Maintenance Required-See Dealer" light randomly came on one day and would not go off. Scanner pulled no codes as to what the issue would be. Found out it is a known issue as hundreds, if not thousands of Toyota drivers, have experienced this and that specific warning message indicates that it is due to the coolant bypass valve having failed. Clearly this is a known issue.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- VIN: 2T3A1RFV3LC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Toyota vehicles, namely RAV4’s are having a coolant bypass valve defect. And Toyota is denying this claim and charging to diagnostic and repair. This is a defect and should be set to recall as many owners are experiencing the issue. Mine began on a out of state trip with a engine maintenance light, and leaking fluid from the coolant valve, which can lead to engine stalling and issues while driving. Very dangerous! I took mine to my mechanic and had it repaired since I am beginning not to trust Toyota.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
- VIN: 2T3K1RFV4LW
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I noticed an “engine maintenance required” message on my dash when driving home yesterday. I took the car to the dealership today to have it inspected. I was told I need to “replace the engine coolant bypass valve malfunction” for $738.31. Even though I only have 38,984 miles on the car I was told it was outside of the basic warranty and was not covered by powertrain warranty. When I looked online on several Toyota Forums I noticed other 2019/2020 Toyota RAV4 owners were reporting the same exact issue. I believe this warrants an inspection to see if a nationwide recall is needed and Toyota should cover the cost and refund any and all out of pocket expenses. I’ve driven Toyotas my entire adult life and have never had any issues like this before. It’s very disappointing.

I bought my 2020 XLE Rav4 a month ago and I'm really impressed with how it handles. It corners tightly and is comfortable on long drives. However, I'm disappointed with the driver's seat. Despite having 3 controls, the lumbar support is positioned too high on my back and the rest of the seat is too conclave and hard as a rock. I traded in my 2017 Rav4 for this car and I miss its comfortable seat. Additionally, every time I get out of the car, the seat fabric and clips pop out. I'm only 5 foot 5 and weigh 135, so if the seat can't hold up to me, it won't hold up to my husband. Overall, it's a great car, but the seat is horribly uncomfortable.
-
Good: style, fuel economy, good use of interior space and plenty of USB ports. Bad: The engine stops at stop lights (which affects fuel economy) and needs to be reset every time you restart the engine. The engine is sluggish and the infotainment system is not user-friendly with limited apps. Additionally, the warranty on CPO overlaps the existing warranty (it does not extend it). The ride is truck-like.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like it handles really well and is easy to get in and out of. Plus, the safety features are a great bonus. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

Although I didn't have the best customer experience with Anderson Toyota in Lake Havasu, Arizona, I am thrilled with my purchase of a 2020 Rav4 XLE with convenience package. The vehicle has a powerful engine, amazing options and safety features, and an overall great feel, look and drive. I am looking forward to many years of driving this SUV and hoping it holds up as well as my old Camry did! It's worth noting that the engine can be a bit loud, especially in Sport mode, but you get a smoother and more powerful drive in that mode. Eco mode is also very efficient on gas. I drove all over town for two days on Eco and barely used any gas! The ride can be a bit bumpy on certain surfaces, but it doesn't bother me. Some people have complained about the steering being unpredictable, but I personally find it to be very smooth. If you're familiar with driving Toyotas, you won't notice any issues. Overall, I am deeply satisfied with this vehicle. Happy buying, and happy driving :)

This car is incredibly sporty and comes with a range of safety features. If you're used to having a certain feature on your current car, make sure it's included in your new car. The only options missing from our new Toyota Rav 4 were the automatic back hatch and the built-in garage door opener. We chose the Ruby Pearl Flare model, which had everything we wanted except for those two options. The automatic hatch is definitely a must-have. Overall, it's a great vehicle with unbelievable highway gas mileage. Don't miss out on this car!

I purchased my 2020 RAV4 in July. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the vehicle, including the side mirror coming off and vibration from the radio. Most recently, the dashboard lit up with ten different faults. However, I am confident in Toyota's ability to address these issues and have contacted Toyota Care for assistance. While I am disappointed with the current situation, I trust that the dealership will resolve these issues promptly and effectively.

We have owned several vehicles, including a Prius and a Camry Hybrid, and have never experienced any seat issues until we purchased the 2020 Rav4. Although it is a great fuel-efficient vehicle with a smooth ride (averaging 39.1 mpg for the first 5,000 miles), we have found the seats to be uncomfortable during long drives. We have the Limited model with faux leather seats and have noticed that driving short distances of 40 miles or less is not an issue. However, after 50+ miles, we start to experience leg pains, and by 100 miles, we have to shift from one side of our buttocks to the other. By 200 miles, we are in absolute agony with pains in the buttocks and legs, and even some foot discomfort. This is disappointing since we purchased the vehicle for long trips of mostly 125 miles. We also own a 2017 GMC Acadia Denali and a 2015 Ford Explorer, and neither of these vehicles have any issues with seating discomfort. We have driven both of these vehicles 850 miles non-stop, except for fuel, with absolutely no discomfort. We have purchased gel seat toppers, which offer only minimal improvement. It is important to note that my wife also experiences similar issues with the seats.

Hey there! If you're considering buying this car, I highly recommend taking it for a test drive first. I found the seats to be quite uncomfortable and unfortunately, I made the mistake of purchasing it without trying it out first. Now, only 7 days later, I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of it. Just wanted to give you a heads up so you can make an informed decision. Take care!

As the owner of a 2020 Rav4 purchased in May 2020, I brought my car in for service due to concerns regarding brake and overheating issues. The brake grind problem is usually heard when I hit the brakes with the auto hold function on, and once the auto hold activates, the start/stop function activates to save gas. However, upon restarting the engine, the car jerks a little accompanied by a grinding/burping sound. On one occasion, the same thing happened when my foot was actually on the brake pedal, and it almost felt like there was air in the brake line due to the vibration/sensation sent to my foot. The grinding/burping sound is not always present, but it happens too often for comfort. Another concern arose in November 2020 when I was sitting in the drive-thru for about 30-40 minutes, and my air conditioning suddenly blew hot air. It got pretty steamy in the car really quickly, so I tried to hit the windshield defroster, and that's when it started to smell like something was burning. At first, I thought it was coolant or something electrical, which made me roll down the window to let some cool air in to clear the windshield. Right after that, I looked at my dashboard and noticed the needle on the high hot side, almost on the red part. As soon as I got my food, I parked my car and let it cool for a bit. It was 58° outside at that time, so it helped a lot. While driving home, the car was on limp mode, almost hesitant to accelerate the whole time, and the needle was still on the hot side. Luckily, I was just a mile away from home.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2020 RAV4LE that I purchased in May 2020. Unfortunately, I've had a bit of trouble with it as it has already drained three times since August. I've tried everything I can think of, such as turning off the lights, A/C, and radio, and there's no aftermarket alarm installed. I even took it to the Toyota Dealer I purchased it from, but they couldn't find anything wrong. They did a thorough check of the alternator, starter, and battery, and everything seems to be okay. On the third time, Toyota did a computer reset and cleared the DNS, even though there was no check engine light lit. I'm hoping that this will be the last time this happens. Thanks for listening!
