Jeep Compass problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year, and is currently in its second generation. The first generation Compass and Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep's first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. It is positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee globally or the Commander in South America.

Concept

Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.

The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car's styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.

Common Jeep Compass problems

The Jeep Compass is a compact SUV that has been produced by the Jeep division of FCA US LLC (formerly Chrysler Group LLC) since 2006. While the Jeep Compass has received mixed reviews regarding its reliability, it has above-average ratings from RepairPal, ranking it 11th out of 26 models. However, some model years have been reported to have more issues than others.

The 2007 Jeep Compass is considered the worst model year for this compact SUV, with control arm and bushing failure being the most common problem. Several owners have reported that the control arm bushings just failed, which is a headache because it occurs at lower mileage, around 58k miles on average. Possible solutions include replacing the lower ball joints or the entire control arm. The 2007 Compass also suffers problems with electronics, particularly its Totally Integrated Power Module or TIPM. A standard solution is to get a new TIPM, but it can cost around $1,650.

The 2008 Jeep Compass has improved significantly from the previous year, but it still has issues. The most common problem with the 2008 Compass is the tendency of the tie rods and/or control arm to fail. Many owners reported replacing their tie rods and lower control arms, not once but multiple times. Additionally, the Compass engine is prone to stalling or shutting down while driving, which is a huge safety hazard.

The 2012 Jeep Compass has issues with brakes grinding, which produces a lower-pitched sound different from a squeaking brake. Worn brake pads or foreign objects are potential causes. The TIPM failure also pops up once again with the 2012 Jeep Compass, which can result in problems like a stalled engine, horn going off randomly, faulty power windows, airbags not deploying, and more.

The 2014 Jeep Compass has a loud noise coming from the back brakes, which has no repair option, and it appears at around 10k miles. Another prevalent issue this year is the no crank or start condition related to a faulty wireless control module (WCM). When the WCM fails, the remote keyless entry system will also not operate. Replacing the WCM is the standard solution to correct this problem.

The 2018 Jeep Compass has a no-start condition, which is a somewhat common problem. According to the affected owners, they first noticed the issue when the vehicle was still relatively new, at approximately 25,000 miles. FCA US LLC has released three technical service bulletins (TSBs) regarding the no-start condition in some 2018 Jeep Compasses.

In summary, the Jeep Compass has had its fair share of issues, particularly with the 2007, 2008, 2012, 2014, and 2018 model years. Some of the most common problems include control arm and bushing failure, TIPM failure, engine stalling, grinding brakes, and no-start conditions. It is essential to research before buying a used Compass to avoid expensive repairs and headaches in the long run.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-25
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-25
  • VIN: 3C4NJDFN3PT
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The automatic emergency braking / collision avoidance system engages randomly when there is no risk of collision and often times with no cars or obstacles in sight. For example, when driving on an open interstate highway. Without any apparent reason, the collision avoidance system alerts of an imminent collision and the automatic emergency braking system applies hard braking for a short interval or 1 to 2 seconds. This could result in a rear end collision if a following vehicle were unable to react in time to slow down. Additionally, the system will activate while navigating curves, applying hard braking pressure that could cause loss of control. In a little over a year of ownership, this issue has occurred approximately 12+ times. Changing the sensitivity of the system has not effect, as it still occurs even at the lowest sensitivity settings (shortest warning interval applied in vehicle settings)

Jeep Compass 2022
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-14
  • VIN: 3C4NJDBB3NT
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Bought my vehicle new at 29 miles. At 4k miles my auto braking light would come in as off. Every 2k it would turn itself off, even though I want the feature on. Even though it says it's off there will be times the warning will alert me to brake for no reason and someone's brake for no reason. I've gone to the dealer multiple times and they wouldn't find a code or a reason why it was doing that, and brush it off like nothing. every 2k miles out would turn off. Now after hitting over 40k miles I started to experience it more often where it would tell me brake. Now something at 49k miles. When I'm on a slight hill or high incline when my vehicle turns off and tries to start it will roll back and not move forward even when I apply the gas like the engine is still off. When that happens the SERVICE HILL HOLDER, and then multiple other safety features have warnings for, SERVICE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL, DRIVE MODE UNAVAILABLE, ACTIVE LANE MANAGEMENT UNAVAILABLE SERVICE REQUIRED, AUTO EMERGENCY BRAKING UNAVAILABLE SERVICE REQUIRED, STOP/START UNAVAILABLE SERVICE START/STOP SYSTEM. I told the dealer that had my car for a month at 49k miles about the hill holder and what my vehicle did. No results and still have this issue. When you turn off the vehicle the service lights disappear and can't be read. This happens almost every day now. I replaced my AUX battery after it seems to happen when my vehicle is off and struggled to turn back on at times and it still does it. I'm afraid that I'm going to get into an accident when people see I took my foot off the brake and will get rear ended or if my vehicle is going to brake itself and cause an accident or the other safely issue fail. The stability control can be an issue and drive mode I can't turn off or on those features when those notifications pop up. What can happen, will it eventually do this on a freeway and cause a major accident or when I'm through an intersection..5 different dealers and have no answer... Help

Latest negative Jeep Compass car reviews

  1. Austin Satterfield 2025-11-12

    Vehicle year: 2016

If you own a 2016 Jeep Compass and drive over 50 miles, it's important to have a fire extinguisher in your vehicle. I had a scary experience with my own 2016 Compass when I noticed smoke and flames coming from under the hood while driving on I-95. Luckily, two workers at a rest area were able to help me contain the fire with their fire extinguishers. While the dealership claimed no responsibility, I filed a claim with Chrysler and have been waiting for a case manager to contact me for 29 days. Despite this frustrating experience, I remain hopeful for a resolution soon. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, don't hesitate to reach out for help.

  2. Nicolas Hessel 2025-11-06

    Vehicle year: 2021

The car is experiencing some technical issues such as the tire light coming on unexpectedly, radio screen shutting off, and shifting lights working intermittently. Additionally, the seat is showing signs of wear at only 14,000 miles. However, I am confident in my ability to diagnose and resolve these issues effectively.

  3. Hubert Kemmer 2025-11-05

    Vehicle year: 2021

During my search for a crossover, I took a lengthy test drive of the Trailhawk trim. I want to preface my review by stating that my experience was based on a former rental with 30,000 miles, supposedly well-maintained by a large rental company. The ride was comfortable and the interior was cool. The infotainment system was typical FCA quality, easy to connect and play, and probably one of the best. However, I found the drive to be sluggish. The transmission was very temperamental and not enjoyable to drive. The steering control was good, but not the best. The rear view was obstructed by a large pillar on the tail and could benefit from a 360 cam. While it's a great looking mini crossover and I'm sure some folks love it, it just wasn't for me. Additionally, the used car price was as high as a Japanese crossover in a similar class (I think the MSRP is set too high to start).

  4. Santiago Haag 2025-11-01

Hi there! I noticed that you've had some trouble with your 2008 Jeep Compass. It sounds like you've had to replace a few parts recently and it's been frustrating for you. Have you considered taking it to a mechanic to get it checked out? I understand that you're on a fixed income and can't afford to keep fixing it, so it might be worth exploring some other options. On the bright side, your 97 Saturn with 236,000 miles sounds like it's been a reliable car for you! Thanks for sharing your experience with the Jeep Compass.

I purchased my 2011 Compass in December of 2013. Although I initially loved my Jeep, I soon realized that the gas mileage was not great. It only gets around 240 miles per 16 gallons around the city, and that's during the summer when the traction is turned off. After a few months of ownership, the side plastic piece along the passenger seat broke from simply getting in and out of the seat. Unfortunately, today, in January of 2015, at 37K miles, it had to be towed twice due to computer issues not sending signals to the fuel pump. I am looking forward to getting a new vehicle and hopefully better luck with my next one!

I am so glad to hear that your daughter and her 2-month-old baby were not injured in the car accident. It must have been a scary experience for all of you. I am grateful that the Jeep performed so well in protecting your loved ones, even though it is now a total loss. Thank you for sharing your story and I hope you all recover from the shock soon.

I completely understand your frustration with the negative comments about this car. It's interesting how the 430N Uconnect radio is criticized in one review, but praised when used in a Wrangler. At the end of the day, if you approach the Compass with a negative mindset, you'll likely find faults. However, if you keep an open mind, you may be pleasantly surprised. While it may not be the ultimate off-road vehicle, a fuel-efficient car, or a high-performance SRT, the Compass is an affordable Jeep that offers a decent amount of features, especially with the High Altitude sub trim. It also provides confidence in snowy conditions, which is a valuable asset. In my opinion, this is more than enough, especially considering that you can lease one for around $200 per month.

If I had made my decision solely on Edmunds' review, I would not own a Compass. However, I am totally satisfied with my purchase. The vehicle has plenty of power, and if you want more, you can always opt for the 8-cylinder model. During my first trip, I drove 400 miles on the highway, cruising at 70 mph, and got an impressive 26 mpg. The comfort was excellent, and my wife loves it.

I purchased my Compass in July of this year and it has been an absolute joy to drive. Although I initially wanted a Compass True North, I was unable to find one as Jeep only builds them for auto shows. However, I was able to build my own using the specs I found for the True North. I added a two inch lift kit and a performance intake to improve off-roading capabilities and engine performance. For those who complain about the engine being sluggish, I highly recommend a performance intake as it will fix the issue without affecting gas mileage. I have taken my Compass all over Texas, as far north as northern Indiana, and even through the Ozark Mountains, covering almost all the Jeep trails. Even after almost three years, everything still runs and operates like new. I am so impressed with my Compass that I plan on keeping it for a few more years. Thank you Jeep for providing such a great base to work from. I recently checked out the 2018 Compass Trailhawk at my local dealership and was pleased to see that it has everything my custom-built Compass has. Finally, Jeep has a Compass to be proud of. By the way, I will be keeping mine for a few more years.
