2013 Jeep Compass problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Compass is a compact crossover SUV introduced for the 2007 model year, and is currently in its second generation. The first generation Compass and Patriot, its rebadged variant, were among Jeep's first crossover SUVs. The second-generation Compass debuted in September 2016 in Brazil and at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November 2016, sharing a modified platform with the Renegade. It is positioned between the smaller Renegade and the larger Cherokee globally or the Commander in South America.

Concept

Four years prior to the introduction of the production Jeep Compass, a concept vehicle with the same name had its world premiere in Detroit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show. It featured a two-door body, all-wheel drive and a 3.7-liter V6 engine.

The 3.7 L Power-Tech V6 engine from the Jeep Liberty was not available in the new Compass for 2007, though the production model Compass kept the concept car's styling cues and some of its features. The production model Compass also had four doors instead of the two doors on the concept car.

Common 2013 Jeep Compass problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2013 Jeep Compass, several common problems have been reported:

  • Electrical System Problems - TIPM Failure: The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) is a critical electronic component that, when malfunctioning, can cause various electrical issues like lights flickering, dashboard lights going on and off, and even the vehicle honking on its own. Replacing the TIPM can be costly, with an average repair cost of $1,650, and there are no recalls addressing this issue.
  • Remote Car Starter Malfunction: Some owners have reported issues with the remote car starter not working consistently, causing inconvenience during extreme weather conditions. This problem can impact the usability of the feature, affecting the comfort of starting the car remotely.
  • Temperature Gauge Creep: On hot days at high speeds, some owners have noticed the temperature gauge creeping up past normal levels. While the car has not overheated, this behavior can be concerning and may indicate an underlying issue that needs attention.
  • Back-Up Screen and Remote Car Starter: Owners have reported issues with the back-up screen sometimes malfunctioning or displaying funky colors, along with intermittent problems with the remote car starter not working reliably. These issues can be frustrating for owners relying on these features for convenience.

These common problems with the 2013 Jeep Compass highlight various issues related to powertrain, electrical system, temperature gauge, and convenience features like the remote car starter. Addressing these problems promptly and accurately can help maintain the performance and usability of the vehicle.

  • Summary: Attached is a work order request for a defective door handle on my Jeep Compass. The driver side door handle we have determined is wrapped in metal and is delaminating. It has caused a hand injury to my daughter due to the wrapping on the door handle coming apart and being extremely sharp. We have taken the car to our local dealer for inspection and they have verified that this is not normal and we believe the part is defective. Additionally, the passenger side handle is starting to do the same. This is a dangerous defective part and attempts to correspond with Jeep/Stellantis have been completely ignored.

May 2021, while driving at highway speeds the transmission temperature light illuminated and an un-commanded deceleration occurred to about 10 mph, it would go no faster got to the nearest off ramp and to a rest area sat for an hour, then the vehicle performed normally. May 13, 2021, took the vehicle to the repair facility no trouble codes were set but they replaced the transmission filler tube. A few days later the light illuminated again but no adverse driving conditions occurred. June 18, 2021, at highway speeds the vehicle decelerated to 10 mph a service engine light illuminated a transmission overtempt light also and made it home about ten miles at no more than 10mph, 19 aug 2022 drove the vehicle at a few mph to my local Jeep dealer for check engine and no power.

SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-05
  • VIN: 1c4njceb4dd
  • Components: SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: While preparing to enter my car today (6/5/2022) I heard a fairly loud popping/exploding sound. I quickly backed away from the car then approached it again and realized the passenger headrest, though attached, had basically split in 2. Upon further inspection I couldn’t see why this had randomly happened as I didn’t have a passenger with me and hadn’t touched it. I tried to force it back together but couldn’t figure out how to get it to move so I left it as is. Later this evening I started searching online for how to fit it back together and it appears this happens frequently especially with jeeps and is a failure of a safety feature called active headrest. I went back out to look at it and saw exactly what I had seen other drivers mention, there’s 2 teeny tiny pieces of black plastic that apparently keep it from deploying and the right one had cracked. Just lucky that no one was sitting there at the time or that it wasn’t the driver headrest while driving - very unsafe, I can’t even believe a “safety feature” is approved when it’s only withheld by a piece of plastic so small you wouldn’t think twice about discarding it if you found it while opening a toy.

2013 Jeep Compass recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2013 Jeep Compass.

2016-09-15
  • Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:PRETENSIONER
  • Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Chrysler 200, 2010 Chrysler Sebring, 2010-2012 Dodge Caliber and 2010-2014 Jeep Patriot, Compass and Dodge Avenger vehicles. • Consequence: If the frontal air bags, seat belt pretensioners, and side air bags are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.
  • Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the OCR, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners that parts are not available yet were mailed on October 26, 2016. The recall began on August 15, 2017. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S61.

Negative 2013 Jeep Compass car reviews

  1. Filiberto Pacocha 2025-01-06

I was disappointed with my car's performance. Although I loved it when I first bought it 2 years ago, it has had several issues with the transmission, steering column, catalytic converter, and flat tires. Despite spending a lot of time and money at the dealership, the car remains unfixed. I would not recommend this car to anyone. I apologize if you have already purchased it and are experiencing similar issues.

  2. Rickey Bernier 2024-10-13

Our Jeep Compass Latitude, which we purchased six weeks ago, experienced a catastrophic failure while driving on the freeway. The front driver's side collapsed with a loud explosion-like sound, causing the entire wheel to snap off, leaving only the center part of the hub cap bolted on and the rotor filed down. Despite the Highway Patrol officer and tow truck drivers being baffled by the incident, the dealership is insisting that we must have hit a curb to cause a blowout. However, we find it hard to believe that a blowout could cause the entire wheel to rip off. We suspect that it may be a design defect. We urge caution to anyone considering purchasing this vehicle.

  3. Noe Bergstrom 2024-07-12

Hello 2011 Jeep Compass owners! I wanted to share my recent experience with my vehicle. Unfortunately, I had a massive oil leak with my 2011 Jeep Compass, despite it only having 4900 miles. During my daily commute, the oil light came on and white smoke (oil smoke) was coming from the underside of the vehicle. I had to have it towed to the dealership where they found that the oil filter housing had cracked, draining the engine of all but about 2 quarts of oil. The dealership claimed that the factory must have overtightened the oil filter, causing it to crack. I was worried about how much life I just took off of my engine with low oil, but the dealership simply did an oil change to resolve this issue. I wanted to share this with other Jeep owners to make them aware of this issue. Remember to stand up for yourself and document everything if you encounter any problems with your dealership.

  4. Tomas Osinski 2024-07-10

I purchased my 2011 Compass in December of 2013. Although I initially loved my Jeep, I soon realized that the gas mileage was not great. It only gets around 240 miles per 16 gallons around the city, and that's during the summer when the traction is turned off. After a few months of ownership, the side plastic piece along the passenger seat broke from simply getting in and out of the seat. Unfortunately, today, in January of 2015, at 37K miles, it had to be towed twice due to computer issues not sending signals to the fuel pump. I am looking forward to getting a new vehicle and hopefully better luck with my next one!

  5. Theron Wiegand 2024-05-23

We would advise against considering this option due to the constant issues such as oil leaks, failed bearings, rust, and broken differentials. We have spent a significant amount of money trying to fix these problems. Please let us know if you have any questions or if we can assist you in finding a better alternative.

Positive 2013 Jeep Compass car reviews

  1. Enoch Rath 2025-01-09

I bought my 2011 Jeep Compass Latitude 2.4 4x4 automatic on January 15th, 2015. At the time of purchase, it was 4 years old. Despite the poor testing reviews by Edmunds, CR, and Car and Driver, I have not experienced any of the problems they mentioned. The only downside is the poor gas mileage, which barely reaches 16 to 17 mpg. Everything else about my Jeep Compass is great. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned, and I have had no problems with it. My 2011 Jeep Compass Latitude 4x4 2.4 automatic has 106,508 miles as of 9-29-2021, and I still love it. I did my 100,000 mile service checklist at 98,500 miles, and I recently had to replace all 4 strut assemblies because all 4 of my struts were leaking. Now, I do not have to worry about any other significant maintenance until 150,000 miles.

The car was very stylish, but unfortunately it was quite compact on the inside. Despite purchasing a CVT transmission with 4x4, I found that the space was limited, especially in the back seat and cargo area. However, it lasted me a long time and I used it for everything from camping to off-roading, and even as a daily driver. The mileage was a little low, even for highways, at about 21 combined, without any aftermarket modifications. Overall, it was a good car, but I decided to upgrade to a Subaru Crosstrek for more space, AWD, and a higher lift.

I absolutely fell in love with the Jeep the moment my eyes landed on it! After taking it for a test drive, I knew it was the car for me. As a kid, I always dreamed of having a Jeep, and now that I finally have one, I couldn't be more ecstatic!

After searching for 2 months for an SUV, I finally decided on a leftover Compass. I received a really great deal and they even installed remote start for free. The highway gas mileage is great, considering I drive 30K a year. The 2.4 is a little sluggish, but it gets you where you're going. Most people I've spoken to like the new look, and yes, it does resemble the Grand Cherokee. All things considered, so far I'm a happy JEEP owner.

When I stumbled across a 2012 Compass, I instantly fell in love with it, even though I was looking for something a little different. I've been calling it my beautiful beast and it has not disappointed me yet. Despite some of the reviews I read, I'm averaging 30+ mpg combined, which is great for an SUV. It costs me only 20 bucks to fill the tank and I'm good for quite a while. The ride is very smooth and quiet, and the car feels higher end than some of the cars I test drove. The seats are slightly narrow, but that doesn't affect my comfort. The car is perfect for everyday use and for hauling my three dogs across the country when needed. The car came with Bluetooth, good speakers, and Sirius radio, which is a plus. The car is easy to get in and out of for taller people. However, the acceleration isn't great, and the transmission seems stiff at times, especially in first and fifth gear. The seats are narrow, so if you are wider, it may be uncomfortable. My knees tap the dash when sitting regularly because I'm so tall, but if I pull the seat back, then my legs aren't close enough to hold the pedals down. I wish it had automatic headlights, and I don't like the design of the center console/armrests, but that's personal preference. Overall, the car is perfect for what I needed, but if you are looking for industry-leading gas mileage or constant off-road driving, this is definitely not the car for you. THIS IS NOT A HARDCORE STEREOTYPICAL OFF-ROADING JEEP. I test drove a Nissan Versa, a Kia Soul, a Saturn Astra, and a Ford Escape, and they all felt very cheap and noisy compared to the Compass. The Versa and Soul didn't feel substantial to me, almost like driving a tin can. I didn't feel safe driving them.
