The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

I drove it down to the beach (8 hour drive) about a week after purchasing the vehicle so at that time there were less than 100 miles on the car. We didn't use the vehicle for the week we were at the beach and when we tried to unlock the car to load our bags, the key would not unlock the car and we couldn't get in. We had to manually unlock the doors and call roadside assistance because the Battery reset button would not jumpstart the car. I was assured that there was no issue with the car by my local Hyundai dealership and that this was "normal." I have had the car die on me countless times while it sits idle in my driveway if I don't start it at least every other day. On August 8th 2024, my car was dead and I was able to jump it with the Battery Reset button. The next day, it was dead again. Upon jumping it for the second time in 24 hours, the check engine light came on. I took the car to the dealership to run diagnostics and the hybrid battery has failed their tests. Now I am waiting on my car with a loaner vehicle that I cannot drive out of state. I was told by customer service that they have had this problem with several other customers and some had to wait TWO YEARS for their battery to arrive and car repaired.

- Summary: In February 2024, on a day with snow on the ground no less, my husband was driving over the Verrazano Bridge from Brooklyn, NY to Staten Island, NY, when the car suddenly started shaking and the speed dropped from 50 to 20 in about 10-30seconds. The car started smoking and filling up with fuel fumes. Cars were beeping at him, almost crashing into the back of the car. He was able to make it to safety and had the car towed to the nearest Hyundai Dealership/service. The issue was an injector. When I get back to my car, I have to use the physical key to unlock and push the 12 dcv button to jump start the system. The cover over the door latch has to be taking off with the key to access it and is very hard to remove. This is a safety issue, especially for someone who may have a disability. It tool me 15 minutes to remove the cover because I had to pry it off with breaking it. The dealership also stated that several models of Hyundai using the same fuel injectors had come in with the same failures.(10+ cars) Not all on the same cyclinder either. My vehicle has only been inspected by the dealership at this time. There were no warnings leading up to the failure. ****Full Story**** I was driving at about 40 mph through town and experienced total loss of drive power. The vehicle had electric, but little to no response from the gas pedal. I manged to limp the vehicle about 200 yards to a stop light. The rpms dropped to under 300 and the engine began to idle very rough. I shut the car off while at the red light to save it from any potential internal damage. When the light turned green, I almost could not get the car to start and stay running. There was a very strong gas smell at this point, which I had assumed was coming from the engine. I had to put the gas pedal to the floor to keep it running and ride the brakes through the intersection to not hit the vehicle in front of me. After getting through the intersection, I limped it into the parking lot on the other side. This is when I noticed the check engine light had come on. There was no leaking fluids under the hood or the car. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest Hyundai dealership.

The car was good for a while but on [XXX] of 2024 the deceleration issue happened again. it did not stall out on me and I was lucky enough to be able to get the car to my dealer to have them do a diagnostic check. They did not find anything. This is baffling to me. I guess I need to break down again for, something to be fixed with this car. my complaint is that while driving my car and if I break down it is unsafe for me and other cars on the road if my vehicle just dies. I do have a job and also like to travel out of town sometimes. I do not feel safe with this car. It broke down twice in the first year so it did not qualify for the lemon law in my state of Pennsylvania. Please provide some information on what I need to do to keep myself and other drivers safe. - Summary: Since a few weeks after buying the car new, the battery dies and self resets every few weeks on average. No error codes occur, but the car had clearly lost power while parked, indicating an issue with power management. For the last could months, car now has 26-27K miles and is 21-23 months old, it had mostly stopped resetting. It now is dead when I go out to it, even after only a couple hours of it being parked at night or during the day. I have to manually access the car and use the battery reset button. They observe no error codes. I have read other people have the failure while driving and fear and electrical issue could be a fire hazard. At the very least, it is a personal safety issue in making me take time to access my car, which could increase my risk of being attacked while trying to get into my car safely. - Summary: As I was driving my dashboard lit up with warning lights and audible alarms indicating that I should inspect my regen brake. Safety features such as lane departure, lane assist, blind spot indicator stopped functioning and my speedometer did not work. I stopped the car and looked behind the front wheels and nothing looked “unusual”. I restarted the car and all of the alarms went off again, leaving me without a speedometer or the safety features mentioned above. I scheduled an appointment with my dealership explaining what had happened. They did a diagnostic test and determined that it was a faulty E Brake Module that needed to be replaced but is on back order with no parts available in the US to order. Furthermore they do not know when a replacement is available. They reset the sensors so that my safety features were restored. This is the second time within a 14 months of purchasing the brand new vehicle that electrical systems have needed to be replaced. The first time was a faulty wiring harness located in the trunk area that the dealership had said “must have been damaged during installation at the factory”. Again-when I driving at highway speeds suddenly the alarms and warning lights were triggered-leaving me without the same safety features, speedometer and power steering/brakes. The dealership was able to replace the wiring harness and the problem seemed to be resolved until this latest incident.

- Summary: There was a transmission recall that was addressed back in early 2023 by the dealership that presented as a 1st gear stutter within a month of purchasing the car back in May 2022. At the time I was told if the reprogramming didn't work, the transmission would need to be replaced. The vehicle was driven very little but I was told it would need a couple of weeks of regular driving to ensure the fix took. If it didn't I was advised to bring the car in immediately. The car stayed in the garage and didn't get driven until July when it was taken on a 100+mile trip when I realized that the first gear was starting to jerk upon shifting. I finally called Hyundai about possibly trading it in and eventually on Aug 21, 2023 called the service dept to give them a heads up I'm going to bring it in. However was told I would have to now rebook the appointment and got one for Dec 22, 2023. I mentioned that this was under the recall issue but was informed that they would have to do diagnosis to confirm that. In the meantime they didn't offer any other recourse or priority to have this addressed. I can't afford to pay for another vehicle out of pocket in the meantime. Also, now it's showing that recall issue as repaired even though that may have not happened as of now. I'm concerned that something bad might happen in the meantime and I don't seem to have any other options.

- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe and Sonata vehicles equipped with 2.5L turbocharged engines. Fuel may leak at the pipe connection between the high-pressure fuel pump and fuel rail.
- Consequence: A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and tighten, or replace the fuel pipe as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 207.

The 8th-generation Sonata left me both confused and awed with its blend of classy and modern elements, conveying different impressions at each angle. I am continually impressed by Hyundai's aggressive efforts to evolve its brand, providing remarkable value in terms of features, safety, style, etc., all at an economy price. I have been driving my 2021 Sonata Limited for about four months now, and I can confidently say that it's a great value for the price with an impressive attention to detail, despite a couple of glaring flaws. The car looks more expensive than it is, with its sleek, refined appearance and luxurious beige-gray interior (depending on which color you get). The Limited trim level also has a sprightly little turbocharged engine and an impressive array of features, making it an enjoyable place to be, as the car reviewers say. On paper, it's a better value for the price than the fully loaded competitors (Camry, Accord, etc.). However, there are a few flaws that slipped through their development process despite the otherwise thorough attention to detail that is evident. Firstly, there is no interior handle with which to close the trunk, encouraging owners to leave fingerprints on the rear paint (I usually close mine by touching one of the taillights). I might even recommend one of these for the hood as well. Secondly, there is much more road noise than I would expect from this quality of vehicle, which diminishes my enjoyment of the Bose sound system. Lastly, the suspension system is over-specified, which I find excessively stiff and jittery for what is supposed to be a more luxurious sedan.I really like this car in general, but the suspension is a bit too stiff for my liking. While it handles corners well, most consumers interested in this car want something more comfortable and won't be driving aggressively enough to justify this level of stiffness. I think Hyundai could learn from the Accord and Mazda6, which manage to have sporty handling while still being comfortable. Even my 2017 Elantra had fairly tight suspension, but I never had any issues with comfort. Perhaps they used the same suspension system for all trim levels of the Sonata, which makes it sporty for everyone. However, those with 17-inch or 18-inch wheels may find it uncomfortable. Overall, the Sonata has potential, but I'm still searching for an interesting, affordable, and comfortable commuter car.

This car has a lot of great safety and tech features, making it a fun drive for Baby Boomers like us. However, some of the controls are spread out over the dash and can be difficult to locate, especially for Boomers. I purchased this car for its extensive safety features, but unfortunately, I have experienced some brake problems. The brakes can be very grabby and make it difficult to make a smooth stop. I have taken it to the dealer twice, but they have not found anything wrong. Despite this issue, I still appreciate the many great features of this car.

Great handling with innovative safety features and all the creature comforts you want. Good mileage and adequate acceleration. UPDATE: This car is not only reliable and secure, but also quiet. The heads up display and cameras are awesome, making driving a breeze. The controls are logical and the large display makes navigation and system control easy. The Bose sound system makes listening a pleasure. The heated and ventilated front seats, along with the driver position memory, are welcome additional comforts.

Just purchased the 2021 Sonata SEL Plus and I am absolutely thrilled! It is definitely a luxury car at a more affordable price. The car drives so smoothly and looks incredibly sleek. I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

I have been the proud owner of a 2021 Hyundai Sonata from Rick Case Weston Florida for the past 5 months. However, I have recently experienced some issues with the car, resulting in it being at the dealer for the last 2 months. Despite multiple electronic issues and engine start problems, the dealer has not provided a clear explanation of the situation. As a knowledgeable and confident car owner, I am frustrated with this situation and expect a prompt resolution.

Although the initial purchase of a 2021 Sonata Hybrid did not meet my expectations, I confidently returned to the dealer and upgraded to a '21 Sonata SEL Plus with the 1.6T engine. This car boasts fantastic technology and a great driving position. While there were some minor drawbacks such as lag in the 1.6T Turbo and/or gearbox, and the 8-speed auto occasionally fumbling around for the right gear, overall I was pleased with my purchase. However, after two months of driving, I decided to trade in the Sonata for a Mazda 6.

I have the non-turbo 2.5. Although the car may seem sluggish on the low end, it still performs well overall. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the radio malfunctioning at only 6K miles, displaying an HD station when there is none and producing weak sound. I was unable to upgrade to the Bose sound system due to my preference for a non-turbo engine. While a car's warranty is meant to provide peace of mind, it is only as good as the manufacturer's willingness to honour it. Currently, I am experiencing some difficulty with Hyundai refusing to fix my radio in my 6-month-old car. However, I am confident that this issue will be resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner.

I purchased this car just three weeks ago, but unfortunately, I have experienced a number of issues with it since the initial two weeks. Despite only driving the car around 300 miles in that time, the engine light has already turned on. At first, I was informed that it was an electrical component that needed to be replaced, and that the car would be ready within seven days (including four days for the component to be shipped). However, I received a call today informing me that the engine harness also needs to be replaced, and that this will take between six and eight weeks. I would advise avoiding this car at all costs, as it has caused me a lot of headaches. Additionally, I have found the dealership's service department to be sub par. I hope this information is helpful to you.
