2022 Jeep Gladiator problems

jeep logo

The Jeep Gladiator is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by the Jeep division of Stellantis North America (formerly FCA US). It was introduced at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show on November 28, 2018, and went on sale in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. Based on the same platform as the Wrangler JL, the Gladiator is Jeep's first pickup truck since the Comanche was discontinued in 1992.

Jeep Gladiator is also being marketed in Australia and New Zealand as the first markets outside the Americas. It is also officially available in North America, parts of South America, parts of Europe, China, Japan, South Korea, parts of Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Israel, and South Africa.

History

The vehicle's name harkens back to the original Jeep Gladiator, made in 1962 until 1988 and known as the J-Series after 1971. Jeep considered reviving the Gladiator name alongside Comanche and most commonly Scrambler, as well as simply using a new name, before deciding on Gladiator, feeling it fits the truck the best.

A two-door version of a Jeep Scrambler pickup based on a lengthened Wrangler was shown in 2003 at the National Automobile Dealers Association meeting.

In late-2004 the Jeep Gladiator concept was introduced. The 2005 Gladiator Concept did not feature a removable roof, but had removable doors and a pickup bed. It also previewed the design of the upcoming Jeep Wrangler (JK). The Gladiator concept was powered by a 3.0 L Common-Rail Diesel (CRD) engine produced by VM Motori (similar to the one used in some models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee), mated to a manual transmission, and four-wheel-drive. It featured functional rear mini-doors, and rear seating. The Gladiator concept featured a green-on-gray color scheme for both the exterior and interior.

Common 2022 Jeep Gladiator problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2022 Jeep Gladiator, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Engine Issues:
    • Owners have reported stalling, hesitation, and misfiring while driving. This can be caused by various factors such as faulty spark plugs, fuel injectors, throttle body malfunction, fuel pump, or engine control module. Some have experienced issues with intake camshafts, lifters, and Rockers, which may require replacement, especially noticeable at low miles.
    • The plastic oil filter cooler is prone to leaking, with aftermarket aluminum solutions available for a more permanent fix.
  2. Transmission Problems:
    • The automatic transmission has been known to have issues such as slow shifting, jerking, and overheating during off-road use. Some owners have reported a leaky transmission even at low miles. Jeep has issued recalls to address these transmission issues, with some vehicles requiring the replacement of the entire ZF transmission unit.
  3. Braking, Steering, and Suspension Concerns:
    • While Gladiator brakes are generally reliable, some drivers have reported noisy and shattering sensations while braking, which can be alarming. Suspension bushings wearing out quickly have caused clunking or rattling noises while driving, affecting the vehicle's overall performance.
  4. Steering Problems:
    • Complaints to the NHTSA have highlighted steering issues, including the infamous "death wobble," where running over small bumps at highway speeds causes violent shaking of the steering wheel. This problem can be dangerous and requires immediate attention.
  5. Clutch Assembly Recall:
    • A recall has been issued due to a faulty clutch assembly that could potentially explode and cause a fire. Owners have expressed concerns about the safety of their passengers, especially children, in the event of such a failure.

These common problems with the 2022 Jeep Gladiator highlight various mechanical and safety issues that owners have faced. It's essential for owners to stay informed about these issues and address them promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of their vehicles.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-29
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C6JJTBM1NL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I had been driving for about an hour returning from a camping trip when my wife and I noticed a burning smell in the cab of the vehicle. About 5 seconds later smoke began filling the interior. I pulled over and got my family out of the vehicle, which includes my wife, two kids and a dog. I went to the front of the vehicle and saw flames on the passenger side inner fender as well as the top of the passenger fender. With the help of a friend who was traveling with us, I was able to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher I always carry. I think its safe to say a vehicle fire put my entire families safety at risk. I have contacted my insurance company and filed a claim, however no inspections have been performed yet. There were no warning lamps indicating there was an issue.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C6JJTBG4NL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: In the early afternoon hours of July 5, 2024, our 2022 jeep gladiator rubicon with only 18,000 miles spontaneously combusted in our driveway after being parked there for just under 24 hours. While working in the yard, my husband noticed thick black smoke coming from the engine. The smoke quickly turned into flames then rapidly intensified as it spread throughout the engine, cabin and then ultimately the entire jeep. The jeep was a total and complete loss with Jeep claiming no responsibility whatsoever. We have over $60,000 in damages to our home, driveway, landscaping and soil (PFAS) from the fire, NOT including the jeep itself. Note *The engine light did go on about a month prior to the fire, which from what we were told by Jeep service dept, was due to multiple misfires. This issue was resolved immediately. After the fire, the jeep was inspected by our insurance company and also by Jeep. Because the fire was so intense and quickly spread, there wasn’t anything left. Jeep never returned our calls and never once tried to make things right! Our safety was at risk for obvious reasons. The Jeep spontaneously started on fire due to no fault of our own. Had we not have been home, or had the Jeep been parked in our garage, facing the garage or the fire started at night while we were sleeping, the outcome would have been quite different. The damage it DID do to our property along with the mental anxiety and stress of trying to pay for repairs is significant enough without actually having our house burn down to the ground. This is unacceptable! Jeep needs to take responsibility!

POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-22
  • VIN: 1C6JJTFM2NL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failed while I was entering a downhill curve on a paved but narrow mountain road with no shoulder. The HPFP had been under an active recall, (Y78 / NHTSA 21V-880) but every time we went in for service our Jeep dealership said a remedy was not yet available. When I asked if it was safe to drive, they said yes, continue to drive the vehicle and that they would call us when a remedy became available. Not very sage advice. The failure happened while we were on vacation in a remote area of New Mexico, four hours away from home. An unrecognizable warning light flashed but did not remain on. The engine remained running, but the HPFP failure caused a complete loss of power to the engine and transmission. Steering became difficult. I gently braked and coasted to a safe spot. Luckily that spot was a forest service road about a quarter of a mile from where the Jeep lost power. We had the vehicle towed to the nearest Jeep Dealership. They confirmed that the HPFP failed. It took 2 months for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (FCA), and that dealership to address the HPFP issue. At the end of 2 months, they called and said the vehicle was fixed and ready. While driving home from the dealership a check engine light came on. That was [XXX]. We had the vehicle towed to our local Jeep dealership. Our dealership checked and said that there were still metal shavings in the fuel system. Our dealership and FCA have not found a solution and our Jeep is still inoperable and setting at the dealership. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
  • VIN: 1C6JJTBG5NL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On [XXX], traveling at the speed limit of 70mph, crossing from Illinois to Indiana my Rear Locker engaged light came on, on the dashboard. I immediately pressed the disengage button... The warning light came on, flashing, but never indicated that the rear locker was disengaged. I then immediately pulled over the vehicle at a safe location. Where i tried unsuccessfully to disengage the locker... I ended up turning the vehicle off, waiting a few minutes, and then turning it back on. The warning light did not initially turn back on. Three more times on the way back on that day, it did turn back on. The third time it never did turn off. I performed a few tests to make sure the Locker was not actually engaged. However, the system continues to tell me that the Rear Locker is engaged. Even though it is not engaged... I'm concerned that the control system for the Rear locker is compromised and poses a substantial risk to drive on the highway in its current condition. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-10
  • VIN: 1C6HJTAG2NL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: Warning lights come up on the dashboard often (brake failure, airbag failure, steering failure, start/stop needs servicing, transmission needs servicing, pullover safely car will turn off, car not in park but it is and won’t turn off) the car turns itself on and off all day. From the beginning the vehicle had electrical issues, not connecting to my phone or Bluetooth, the screen not working, locking and unlocking only working from the key not using the passive entry and having to start the push button by pushing it with the key or it wouldn’t work, it’s gotten progressively worse and now mid drive it will slam to a stop like it hit a wall, flash all the system failure lights then just all the instrument panel lights, it turns on the windshield wipers, the hazards do not work, the headlights start flashing independently etc. it will not turn off or on. It has been towed to the shop twice for this where they replace the two batteries/fuse array and say they can’t get it to happen again but see the codes on the box. It’s spent a combined 140+ days in the shop at this point where I have to fight days to get a rental. The slamming to a stop mid drive is so harsh not only am I almost rear ended but also it’s torn my shoulder forming a cyst that I’ve had trigger point shots and physical therapy for and might need surgery yet they still refuse to buy it back. I have videos.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-24
  • VIN: 1C6JJTEG9NL
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Drove the vehicle approx 18 miles to work in the morning. The vehicle sat parked, locked and secured in a corporate office lot visible from office. Left for the day and as I started to drive began to smell gasoline. Looked for a gas trail and didn’t see it. Continued to drive and occasionally would smell gas. When I arrived at home, looked in the engine bay and it was dry. Looked underneath and saw that the passenger side undercarriage was dripping with gas. So much the fumes filled the garage and began to move into the house. Parked the vehicle on the street and contacted local dealership. Dealership via phone said only appt is approx more than 2 weeks out and couldn’t give an answer what would happen if the vehicle was brought in and or towed in. I explained the safety aspects of an active fuel leak and they still couldn’t find a way to make an appointment. The next morning a small plate sized leak of fuel as on the asphalt directly under passenger side (where fuel tank is). Vehicle hesitated when starting, when it finally did I looked for active fuel spilling and could not locate. I began to drive to dealership. At one one point when I stopped for a long red light the smell of fuel was overwhelming. Arrived at dealership where you could and smell gas. Went into office and again was told that with out an appointment that was over two weeks out nothing could be done. Again explained the safety aspect of an active fuel leak and was blankly looked at and then told the only appt is more than 2 weeks out. Finally asked for supervisor and they said that it could be left but wouldn’t be seen for 4-5 days. They rented me a vehicle and boldly stated that “if” the cause of the defect wasn’t done by aftermarket parts or vandalism then they would contact jeep to see if the vehicle could be repaired under warranty. This was stated several times. The vehicle is 2 years old and has approx 19000 miles on it. No aftermarket fuel or engine parts have been installed and there was no

I had contacted Jeep to complain about safety in regards to what I think is a defected airbag and they had asked me to send photos of my Jeep after the incident. And without asking how fast I was going and having everything based on the photo, Jeep states they will not do any further investigation because based on the photos the deceleration of my car during the incident was not enough to deploy the air bag. I tried to ask them multiple times to email me an explanation of how they determined that the airbag is not defected based on the photos I sent and have not gotten a response except that the case was closed. They refused to email an explanation and would only want to schedule a phone call to explain. I told them I rather have it email for documentation purposes. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-13
  • VIN: 1C6JJTBG3NL
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: While driving in snowy conditions, snow built up in front of the headlights, blocking them. I had to stop multiple times to sweep the snow out from the socket the headlight is recessed into to get light to project onto thr road. These are the factory LED headlights, which do not produce enough heat to melt the snow, unlike halogen headlights. Not having lights while driving in the snow is scary, as is having to stop in poor conditions on the side of the road. The lights need to be heated or shielded in some way to prevent this from happening.

Negative 2022 Jeep Gladiator car reviews

This truck is a great option, although it may require more effort to drive than some of its competitors, especially in high winds. While off-roading, it performed well. However, I did experience some difficulty switching from 4WD to 2WD, as the lever was initially stuck.

I purchased a '21 Gladiator, but unfortunately experienced significant issues with the steering. Despite trying various solutions, such as adjusting tire pressure and replacing the steering box and damper, the problem persisted and ultimately made driving the vehicle fatiguing and unenjoyable. While I loved many aspects of the jeep, the steering issue was a significant concern. I hope that Jeep will address this problem in the future, as I would be hesitant to purchase another vehicle from them until this issue is resolved.

On the first day after delivery, I noticed a rattle coming from inside the dash when accelerating over 40 mph. It sounded like a loose screw vibrating on a tin plate. Unfortunately, the dealer needs 3 days to investigate and there is no loaner vehicle available. On the second day after delivery, a rock hit the door hinge while I was driving at 25 mph and took two eraser-sized chunks of paint off, down to the bare metal. It's crazy because I had a Ram before and backed into a mailbox once without a scratch. When inspecting the paint loss, I noticed that all of the hinges have crazing lines already. There has to be a factory defect in paint adherence on this area of the vehicle. I'm starting to doubt whether I should even install the running boards I purchased. After a week, the Gladiator is showing worse signs than my last truck that I drove for 3 years. It's frustrating, but I'm hopeful that the dealer will be able to resolve these issues soon.

The diesel gladiator was purchased with the expectation of better mileage, however, it did not meet the desired fuel efficiency.

Positive 2022 Jeep Gladiator car reviews

I love my Jeep! While some national publications may suggest that only Hondas are worth buying, I disagree. I didn't purchase my Jeep for luxury, but rather for its ruggedness and versatility. Despite its rough ride, the Jeep has many luxurious features, including the convenient stay-open doors and the upgraded U-connect 4 system. Additionally, I appreciate the Jeep's strong resale value, which has been consistently impressive with my previous Jeeps. This Gladiator is my 8th Jeep and my first brand new one, and I couldn't be happier with my choice!

I used to own a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee before trading it in for a full-size Nissan Titan in May 2020. At first, I thought I needed a full-size truck, but I quickly discovered how difficult it can be to maneuver in tight spaces. However, due to the high prices of used vehicles, I was able to afford a brand new Jeep Gladiator Willys edition, which I am absolutely astounded by. First of all, it's a Jeep, and having owned two Jeeps in the past, it's like being greeted by an old friend. Secondly, it offers a ton of truck utility. I got the tow package, which is rated at 6000lbs, more than enough for my boat or a moderately sized camper. The bed is 5' in length, compared to the Titan's 5'6

If you're in the market for a comfortable 4WD truck, the Jeep Gladiator Mojave is definitely worth considering. Even though I'm not into rock crawling, I feel like I could do it with this vehicle. As someone who mostly sticks to the mall parking lot, I appreciate a good riding truck and the Gladiator fits the bill. I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious it was compared to my previous TRD Sport, and the Mojave had an even better ride. If you're interested in a mid-size 4WD truck, I highly recommend taking the Gladiator for a test drive!
