2002 Chevrolet Avalanche problems
The Chevrolet Avalanche is a four-door, five- or six-passenger pickup truck that was manufactured by General Motors. The Avalanche was a hybrid between the Chevrolet Suburban SUV and the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, sharing the chassis with the Suburban. Unlike a typical pickup truck where the bed is mounted separately from the cab on the frame, the bed of the Avalanche was integrated with the cab body. It also featured a "midgate" behind the second row of seats that could be folded down, with the seats, to create a longer bed area. The Avalanche was produced across two generations starting in 2001 and ending in 2013.
Breaking with a long-standing tradition, the Avalanche was not available as a GMC, but only as a Chevrolet. Instead, Cadillac would sell a re-badged Avalanche; however, the midgate design would be adapted for use on the GMC Envoy XUV and Hummer H2 SUT.
First generation (2001–2006)
The Avalanche was launched in September 2001 as a 2002 model on the GMT800 platform. First year Avalanches featured light gray plastic body cladding, intended to provide visual distinction from the Suburban/Yukon XL. The Avalanche also gave the public an advance look at the next generation of front fascia designs for the entire GM line. A full-length chrome strip splits each lamp assembly and the grille, with a gold Chevrolet "bow tie" in the center. The hood and fenders featured aggressive folds, in contrast to the softer designs seen on other models built on the GMT800 platform.
Avalanche was nominated for the North American SUV of the Year award and was Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year for 2002.
The Avalanche was originally marketed as being able to "change from an SUV to a super SUV." This was made possible by a plastic cover and an exclusive "midgate," called the Convert-a-Cab system by GM, which could open and close. The midgate was a divider behind the second row of seats that could be folded down, with the seats, to create a longer bed area, or folded up to make a larger cab area. A similar midgate was found on the Cadillac Escalade EXT (a rebadged Avalanche), Hummer H2 SUT, and GMC Envoy XUV.
The truck was offered as a half-ton 1500 series with a Vortec 5.3L V8 producing 285 hp (216 kW) or as a three-quarter-ton 2500 series with a Vortec 8.1L V8 with 340 hp (253 kW) and the 4L85-E four-speed transmission. The base layout is rear-wheel drive, but there is an available with selectable high/low four-wheel drive. Avalanche 2500 models from 2004–2006 were exclusively available with four-wheel drive.
For those who planned to go off-road in their Avalanche, a Z71 Off-Road package was available that added features such as off-road suspension, GM's AutoTrac full-time push-button four-wheel-drive system, all-terrain P265/70R17 white-lettered Goodyear tires, seventeen-inch alloy wheels, leather seating surfaces with waterproof accents, front dual power bucket seats, cloth door panel inserts, GM's OnStar telematics system, all-weather rubber floor mats, Chevrolet bowtie emblems embedded into the backrests of the seats (for 2002 models), dual-zone automatic climate controls with rear HVAC vents and remote controls, remote radio controls with headphone jacks for two pairs of headphones, a security system, gray-finished side running boards, power-adjustable, heated side-view mirrors, SRS side impact airbags. Aside from these details, a Z71 Off-Road decal on the rear side panels identified an Avalanche equipped with this package. Full leather seating surfaces were an available option, also removing the cloth door panel inserts, and also added heated front seats.
For those who preferred the styling of the Z71 Off-Road package but did not plan to take their Avalanche off-road, a Z66 Premium On-Road package was also available. The Z66 On-Road package featured all the equipment that the Z71 Off-Road package offered but replaced the off-road suspension with sport on-road suspension and did not offer four-wheel drive. Aside from these details, a Z66 On-Road sticker on the rear side panels identified an Avalanche equipped with this package. As with the Z71 Off-Road package, full leather seating surfaces without the cloth accents were an available option, also removing the cloth door panel inserts, and also added heated front seats.
To further distinguish it from its Silverado siblings, the Avalanche was practically fully equipped and only came with bodyside cladding. The Avalanche included features such as 16-inch alloy wheels and tires (chromed steel on the 2500 model), an AM/FM stereo with single-disc CD player and six speakers, cloth seating surfaces, front bench seat with power front driver's seat, power windows, power door locks, keyless entry, full instrumentation, dual front airbags, and air conditioning. Options included OnStar telematics system, cassette player, leather seating surfaces, front dual power bucket seats that could be heated, and side airbags for the front seats. A North Face Edition, in partnership with the North Face brand included limited exterior color options, a unique Ebony/Green leather interior, special exterior ornamentation and decals, white-faced gauges, OnStar telematics system, specially colored door panel inserts and speaker grilles, and more.
For 2003, the Avalanche was slightly changed. 2003 models featured a darker cladding, but GM's new president, Rick Wagoner, demanded the removal of this "unpopular" trim (as did certain elements of the public). From mid-year, Avalanche could be ordered without cladding. The uncladded model, known as "Without Body Hardware" (or its initialism "WBH," which is also an RPO code), and alternatively called "slicksides" by GM marketers, resembled the 2003–2005 Silverado 1500 in the front. A new interior—shared with the Tahoe and Suburban—added a new, larger steering wheel with subsequent audio, cruise, and speed controls; an optional six-speaker premium Bose sound system with external amplifier; a new gauge cluster with information center and memory for the front driver's seat, brake and accelerator pedals, and side-view mirror position (on some models); new radio head units, which included an AM/FM stereo with either a single-disc or six-disc CD/MP3 changer, Radio Data System, and optional XM Satellite Radio; standard OnStar telematics system with steering wheel controls; new warning chimes that played through the vehicle's audio system instead of through a separate speaker behind the dashboard; and newly available 17-inch alloy wheels and tires. Optional features included rear audio controls with headphone jacks and a rear DVD entertainment system by Panasonic with wireless headphones. The WBH option was only available in the 1500 series.

Common 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche problems
The 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche is known for several common problems, which can be categorized into three main areas: tailgate issues, faded plastic panels, and engine-related concerns.
- Faded Plastic Panels: The plastic trim on the sides, bumpers, and bed of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche can fade over time due to exposure to sunlight and other environmental factors. This can lead to an unsightly appearance and a decrease in the vehicle's value. To restore the plastic trim, owners can use a heat gun to warm up the plastic and eliminate fading, or apply trim restoration products for a faster and more convenient solution.
- Engine-Related Concerns: The 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche can also experience engine-related problems, such as a check engine light that comes on for a fuel trim code like P0101, P0171, or P0174. These codes can be triggered by a variety of issues, including a lean air/fuel mixture, engine misfire, or engine vibration. Parts that can cause a fuel trim code include a loose or broken air intake tube, broken intake gaskets, a faulty or dirty mass air flow (MAF) sensor, or a faulty oxygen (O2) sensor. To diagnose and fix these issues, owners may need to clean or replace the MAF sensor, replace broken intake gaskets, secure or replace the air intake tube, or replace a faulty O2 sensor.
In summary, the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche has several common problems that can affect the tailgate, plastic panels, and engine. By understanding these issues and their causes, owners can take steps to prevent or address them and maintain the vehicle's performance and value.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-30
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 3GNEK13T72G
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving I suddenly experienced a loss of power. Immediately the truck sputtered to a rolling stop. I was unable to use power steering or power brakes due to the loss of fuel. I later discovered that the fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter was not properly connected. Upon attempting to reconnect, it was noticed that it had broken. The male nipple which goes from the fuel tank, outward about 1 inch, had broken off and was inside of the quick release connection for said fuel line.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-05
- VIN: 3GNEC13TX2G
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: STEERING: I stopped in my daughter yard and was unloading a 16ft trailer of hay and everything was working normally. When I got back in cranked the engine I started pulling forward, I did not have any power steering at all. I first thought the steering wheel had locked but I really had to power down on the steering to get it to turn. No noise, no indication, no problems of any kind with the steering or anything wrong while driving just a few minutes before. The power steering just stopped working period. I told my daughter we were lucky this hadn't happened on the road while pulling the loaded trailer. This could have been very dangerous or deadly if it had gone out while we were pulling the loaded trailer while on the road. If we had been going around a curve or making a turn and it had happened like it did in the yard while parked with NO indication of a problem it would have been very, very bad especially again with NO indications of a problem with the steering and pulling a trailer loaded with hay. I shudder to think what could have happened if we had been going around a curve at 55mph on the highway and this had happened. Power steering fluid pump up to the full line on the check stick when I pulled it out of the power steering pump. I have had the Avalanche for 3 years and have never had to add fluid nor does it have leak anywhere. Again, NO steering problems whatsoever before this.

- Summary: I went to stop my 2002 Chevy Avalanche 1500 and the pedal started to pulsate like my brake assist was gone as I nearly rear end a vehicle and had to swerve out of the way do to the brakes not wanting to stop the vehicle as there supposed to normally. The truck has a p0265 code which is a fault in the ECBM do to the solder joint on the relay in the board. I'm a mechanic for a living and i cant believe this recall still hasn't been addressed a long time ago! This needs to be looked into ASAP and its not just the 2002 avalanche. All these vehicle's listed have this issues but instead of recalling the EBCM for the solder issues they decide to recall it for corrosion on the wheel speed sensors big mistake that still to this day needs to be addressed. 2002-2006 Cadillac Escalade, EXT & ESV 1999-2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2000-2006 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe 2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche 2002-2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer & EXT 2003-2006 Chevolet SSR 1999-2007 GMC Sierra 2000-2006 GMC Yukon / Denali / XL 2002-2007 GMC Envoy / XL 2004-2005 GMC Envoy XUV

- Summary: WITH MY AVALANCHE, I WAS TOWING A TRAILER WITH A CAR LOADED AND TRAVELING AT LESS THAN 10 MPH, I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW FOR A TURN AND LOST NEARLY ALL THE BRAKING POWER. I PULLED TO THE SHOULDER AND NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES FORWARD OF THE ABS MODULE LOCATED INSIDE THE LEFT FRAME RAIL DIRECTLY BENEATH THE DRIVERS SEAT HAD RUPTURED DUE TO CORROSION. FURTHER INSPECTION SHOWED ALL BRAKE LINES IN THAT AREA WERE COVERED WITH CORROSION. ALL BRAKE LINE WERE REPLACED WITH NEW STAINLESS STEEL LINES AFTER RESEARCHING THAT THIS VERY COMMON PROBLEM WAS NOT AUTHORIZED FOR RECALL. REPAIR COST: $950.00. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT BRAKE PROBLEMS OF THIS FREQUENCY AND MAGNITUDE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SUBJECT TO RECALL AS IT IS APPARENT THAT IT IS A DESIGN FLAW AND VERY DANGEROUS.

- Summary: 2002 CHEVY AVALANCHE 2500 WITH 8.1 ENGINE DIES WITHOUT WARNING AT DRIVING SPEEDS. THE BATTERY LIGHT COMES ON, AFTER THE VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN, BUT NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND NO WARNING WHATSOEVER. THE VEHICLE JUST SHUTS DOWN. IT HAS DONE THIS, OFF AND ON, AT RANDOM INTERVALS OVER THE YEARS I HAVE OWNED IT. I HAVE READ ON THE INTERNET OTHERS FROM WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND MOST LIKELY SOLUTION SEEMS TO BE THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR WHICH SOME SAY HAS BEEN RECALLED ON THE 2001 MODEL ENGINE FOR THE SILVERADOS, BUT CANNOT FIND ANYTHING FOR THE SAME 2002 ENGINE, WHICH IS THE SAME ENGINE. THIS IS DANGEROUS AND FRIGHTENING ENOUGH AT "BACK ROAD" SPEEDS, BUT CONSIDERABLY MORE SO AT MAJOR HIGHWAY SPEEDS AS THE VEHICLE LOSES ALL POWER WHEN THE ENGINE SHUTS DOWN, LEAVING THE DRIVER UNABLE TO STEER, BRAKE OR IMMEDIATELY RESTART THE VEHICLE LEAVING IT STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSTATE THERE IS NO CODE IN THE ECM SO THE DEALERS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE IT. DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO DIE BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE?

The truck is a safe and reliable vehicle that is easy to convert from an SUV to a truck. Although the gas mileage is not great (I get about 13-14 MPG), the utility more than makes up for it. I strongly recommend a step-up bar due to the tall vehicle. The ride is smooth, whether on the road or rough terrain, and the 285HP engine has plenty of get-up-and-go. The turning radius is surprisingly good, and the ingenious drainage system ensures that water doesn't leak into the cockpit, even from the folding midgate. It took me a while to get accustomed to the dimensions, but it's a vehicle that I liked when I bought it and love more every time I get behind the wheel. It's the best purchase I've ever made and the most fun I've ever had driving a vehicle.

You won't believe it, but I bought this amazing truck/suv brand new in the fall of 2001 with only 2 miles on the odometer. It's been my trusty companion ever since and I still use it every way imaginable in 2020, with over 217,000 miles on the odometer. The only issue is that they stopped making them, which is a real shame because this truck/suv has spoiled me. I'm actually considering buying another new vehicle now!

I've had the pleasure of hauling all sorts of loads with my vehicle, including travel trailers, cargo trailers, and car haulers, with combined loads up to 19700 lbs, and it has handled them with ease. My wife loves driving it as it feels like a smaller vehicle. It's also great for carrying up to six passengers and can quickly fold down to haul 25 sheets of plywood, all enclosed. Although the tonneau cover storage bag is not very useful, I had a stainless ladder rack built with storage for the covers. I typically get about 11 mpg when pulling trailers and up to 16 on the freeway when empty. I've had a couple of minor issues, such as a pressure switch that needed to be changed and the right rear axle flange that had to be tightened a few times. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my vehicle and would not hesitate to purchase another one today.

Not a bad truck. You know, I had a K1500, and this one is actually nicer than that truck, but I still think it could be better, especially considering the price. I have noticed some issues with the workmanship/quality, like upholstery coming unstitched and some rattles and vibrations that can't be diagnosed. But overall, it's not too bad.

This vehicle has been amazing! It's reliable and stylish. The only issue I ever had was with the front bearings at 92k. I'm excited to purchase another one soon and experience another fantastic vehicle.

Truck overall: I really like it! However, the braking system could use some improvement. It doesn't grab as well as it should, so be careful when approaching quickly changing traffic lights. Additionally, the rear window can make parking a bit challenging.

This is a really fun truck to drive. It's great on the freeway as well as off-road. The emergency brake and all 4 brake pads had to be changed at 45,000.

The water leakage from the panels covering the bed and behind the mid-gate is a persistent issue that I have been facing since the sixth day of owning the truck. Despite taking it to two different service centers for a total of 19 days, the issue still persists. However, I am confident that this issue can be resolved under the warranty and I will continue to pursue a solution until it is resolved.

Although the 2002 Avalanche is an innovative design, it has some design flaws. For instance, the headlamps tend to hold water/condensation, the engine air vents collect all sorts of debris, the plastic side panels may cause corrosion problems in the future, the combo leather and cloth seats are uncomfortable after 30 to 45 minutes of driving, the fold-down bed extension system leaks, and the covered bed design is not entirely water-resistant. Unfortunately, my luggage and golf clubs have gotten wet more than once. In summary, I would not recommend buying the Avalanche. It is built like a rock, but it is not worth the investment!

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned having a broken windshield and not-so-great gas mileage. That's a bummer, but I'm glad to hear that you're still enjoying driving your vehicle and appreciate its power. Have you considered a diesel option? Also, I can imagine that the wheel wells might be a bit tricky to clean with all that room for mud, and the grill catching hoppers can be a hassle. Lastly, I understand that the lack of slide decking on the box can be inconvenient at times. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!
