Common Saab 9-3 2004 problems
The Saab 9-3, a popular executive car produced from 1998 to 2011, is known for its high-quality performance and reliable motoring. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that owners have reported. This article will focus on the 2004 model year and discuss these issues in detail.
One of the most widely reported problems with the Saab 9-3 is related to the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and traction control system.
Another common issue with the Saab 9-3 is engine failure caused by a faulty direct ignition cassette (DIC).
The Saab 9-3's bulkhead is another component that has been known to cause problems.
Cooler oil leaks are also a common problem in the Saab 9-3.
The Saab 9-3 convertible is a good buy that holds its value well, but you want to make sure the hood is in good working order.
Lastly, one of the most common issues with the Saab 9-3 is with the heating system, specifically structural problems with the dial controls and knobs.
What is the most common problem with the Saab 9-3?
Many owners have complained about engine failure caused by a faulty direct ignition cassette (DIC). Saab vehicles primarily use a DIC system, with ignition coils that directly go on top of the spark plugs. If there's a problem with the DIC, the engine may crank but not start.
What is the most reliable engine in the Saab 9-3?
Saab 9-3 Saloon engines, drive and performance
Eight-valve single-turbo models (120hp TiD) are generally considered the most reliable, with the 130, 160 and 180hp later twin-turbo 16-valve variants the next choice.
What year of Saab is the most reliable?
The Saab 900 (1994-1998) is a mid-size luxury car produced by the Swedish automaker Saab. It is the fourth generation of the Saab 900 series. Known for its Scandinavian design, innovative features, and solid build quality, the Saab 900 (1994-1998) is considered one of the most reliable Saabs in its lineup.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-04-01
- VIN: YS3FB49S241
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL: I CONTACTED MY DEALER AS INSTRUCTED AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE ARE NO PARTS AND NO INFORMATION AS TO WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. I ASKED THEM TO DISCONNECT MY SEEMINGLY MURDEROUS AIRBAG AND THEY SAID IT WAS ILLEGAL. WHY IS IT NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE TO WAIT FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD OF TIME TO REPAIR SOMETHING THAT IS POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS OR EVEN FATAL? I BELIEVE TAKATA SHOULD OFFER RENTAL CARS TO THOSE WAITING AND IF THEY HAD TO ASSUME THAT FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY THEY MAY COME UP WITH THE REPAIR PARTS FASTER. IS THERE ANOTHER WAY TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION? IS ANY ACTION BEING TAKEN TO MOTIVATE TAKATA TO DEAL WITH THIS IN A MORE EFFICIENT MANNER? EVEN IF I WERE TO SELL THE CAR, THE RECALL WOULD MAKE IT UNWANTED BY ANY CUSTOMER. PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW TO RESOLVE THIS.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-01
- VIN: YS3FD79Y946
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA INFLATORS: I RECENTLY RECEIVED MY SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FOR THE DRIVER AIRBAG DEFECT IN MY 2004 SAAB 9-3. I UNDERSTAND THE CIRCUMSTANCES AND THAT THE REPAIR PARTS FOR THIS DEFECT ARE CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THE SEVERE IMPLICATIONS TO THIS DEFECT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE TALKED TO MY CERTIFIED SERVICE CENTER AND THEY SUGGESTED I REACH OUT TO YOU BECAUSE I WOULD LIKE YOU TO ISSUE ME A WRITTEN APPROVAL TO AUTHORIZE THEM TO DISCONNECT THE AIR BAG TO REMOVE THE RISKS. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT IN THE PAST THEY HAVE RECEIVED REQUESTS TO DISCONNECT PASSENGER AIRBAGS WHEN SOMEONE NEEDED TO USE A CAR SEAT AND THEY DID NOT WANT THE AIRBAG TO EXPLODE ON IMPACT. THIS IS A SIMILAR SITUATION, WHERE I DO NOT WANT THE AIRBAG TO EXPLODE ON IMPACT DUE TO A DEFECTIVE PART. SINCE YOU ARE UNABLE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY, AND I NEED TO BE ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR, I CANNOT BE DRIVING A CAR THAT CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATH IF I WERE TO GET IN AN ACCIDENT. THEREFORE, THE ONLY OPTION IS TO DISCONNECT THE HAZARD SO THE CAR CAN STILL BE SAFELY DRIVEN. THE SEATBELT IS IN PLACE, ALONG WITH SIDE AIRBAGS FOR SAFETY. ONCE YOU HAVE SUPPLIED THE PARTS TO FIX THE AIRBAG, THEN IT CAN BE INSTALLED AND RECONNECTED. THANK YOU, *TR

This car is perfect for those who want to stand out from the crowd, instead of blending in with the typical BMW/Audi/Acura drivers.
-
A wonderful value! This car handles like a champ in the snow and is very comfortable and fun to drive. The seats are the best I have ever sat in and the HVAC is powerful. The only downside is the interior look (plastic), but that is superficial. The car drives fast and the turbo is cool. It is also very safe and a winner for value among all other makers (why pay more for wood interior and nothing else?). By the way, Indy Saab on 16th street is a great dealership with wonderful service!

This is my first Saab. I'm really impressed with the fuel efficiency - even with the rising fuel prices, I'm still getting 30mpg as long as I keep my foot out of the turbo. The car handles corners better than my 79 Porsche (Audi) 924, and the turbo lag is almost imperceptible. The trunk is huge for a car its size, and it's very quiet on the highway. I'm pleasantly surprised by the info display on the dash, and the radio is way cool - it even tells you the song that's playing on some stations. Needless to say, I'm sold on Saabs - I even bought my wife a 9-5 wagon!
-
This is a great car! The autostick works like a charm. I understand that you have a minor concern about the amount of brake pad dust that accumulates on the wheels, but hopefully that will go away as the brakes wear in. I'm glad to hear that the 9-3 cost thousands less than a comparable A4, 325 or S40, and that the insurance was cheaper too!
-
Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 9-3 Aero. I bought it 4 years ago with only 9k miles on it, and now it has 81k miles. I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I still love this car! It's been so dependable and drives like a dream. Plus, the gas mileage is amazing - I average 28 miles per gallon and can easily get 33 on the highway. If you're in the market for a used car, I highly recommend checking out the 9-3 Aero. You can find great value on the used market, especially if you buy one with an extended warranty. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

After my last review, my car was in for service where they found coolant in one of the cylinders. The engine, which only had 2500 miles on it, is being completely replaced. Although I have had to drive a loaner car on three occasions, I am fortunate to be approaching the criteria to invoke the Lemon Law in Colorado, which is the vehicle being out of service for 30 days in the first year.
Orion Nitzsche 2024-10-20
The car has a lot of great features, including good looks that aren't too flashy and a superb power delivery that is very smooth for a small displacement turbo. The interior is so quiet that you forget it's a convertible, and the seats are very comfortable. While the 'premium' sound system is mediocre at best, it's still acceptable. The tires do break free pretty easily when accelerating from a stop into a turn, but with FWD, this is kind of expected. Unfortunately, the build quality is spotty, which results in buttons and interior surface's paint rubbing off. Additionally, electrical gremlins are a constant threat. Common tasks like resetting the oil life monitor are way more difficult than they have to be. Finally, Saab is often different just for difference sake, like the 'night panel' function.
Chesley McCullough 2024-10-13
GM's track record with acquired companies is disappointing, as evidenced by the depreciation of Saab vehicles. In just two years, the value of a Saab can decrease by half of its original purchase price. Unfortunately, we lost a significant amount of money on this investment.
Adelbert Rodriguez 2024-10-08
I noticed that there are many negative reviews about Saab, and unfortunately, my experience with my 2004 9-3 Linear has not been positive either. Despite my loyalty to Saab, I have had to take my car to the shop numerous times for issues such as brakes, radio, transmission, rattles, doors unlocking by themselves, SID going blank, and key replacement. I would caution anyone considering a Saab, especially those with GM involvement, to think twice before making a purchase. It's important to make an informed decision and not let the image of the old Saab cloud your judgement. By the way, Saab no longer makes fighter planes - they haven't for some time now.
Afton Raynor 2024-08-05
The car experienced multiple issues within a short period of time, including problems with the fuel pump, radiator, security system, battery, and transmission. Additionally, water damage caused by a backed-up pipe resulted in the electrical box under the seat being ruined. Despite attempts to fix the issues, the car still has a damp smell. It is clear that this car has spent more time in the shop than on the road in the last 10 months.
