2011 Chevrolet Hhr problems

The Chevrolet HHR (an initialism for Heritage High Roof) is a retro-styled, high-roofed, five-door, five-passenger, front-wheel drive wagon designed by Bryan Nesbitt and launched by the American automaker Chevrolet at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2006 model.

The HHR shares the GM Delta platform with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5, and Saturn Ion. Chevrolet also marketed a panel van variant of the HHR beginning in 2007. Assembled in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and marketed throughout North America, production of the HHR ended in May 2011. The HHR was replaced in the U.S. by the Chevrolet Captiva Sport. This was a rebadged version of the Opel Antara. However, the Captiva Sport was only available as a fleet vehicle and was not available new to the general public.

Design

The vehicle's design was inspired by the late-1940s/early 1950s Chevrolet cars and trucks, specifically the 1947 Chevrolet Suburban and Advance Design pickups, with large, square fender flares and a hemispherical grille. The design of the HHR has been credited to Bryan Nesbitt who was a former designer at Chrysler where he was the lead designer of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. Nesbitt was recruited by GM to join its design staff and served for a time as the chief designer of the Chevrolet brand. The HHR had a cargo-carrying capacity of 62.7 cubic feet (1.78 m3). All models had a flat-load floor (passenger models have 60/40 split bench) and fold-flat front passenger seat. For the 2007 model year, it was available in four trim levels; LS, LT, 2LT, and Special Edition. A panel van variant was also made available in 2007 for only the LT trim and became available on all trim levels in 2008. A "Half Panel" (RPO code AA5) rear quarter window delete option was available in the 2008 to 2010 model years.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-17
  • VIN: 3GNBABFW0BS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: In 2016 the rear passenger door latch failed. Thinking it was a natural wear & tear type thing, we ordered parts online and re[paired it ourselves for about $100 With in 6 months something inside the door failed, we opened it up and thought we repaired it again, but something is wrong and it just wont open. Has not opened in over 5 years, but I can live with it. after all it is the rear passenger door. In 2018 the front passenger door latch failed and again we ordered parts online and repaired it ourselves for about $100. In 2019 the spring inside the front passenger door broke, but since the door still opened & locked, we let it ride. I can live with the interior door handle feeling loose as long as it still opens the door. In June, 2021 the front drivers interior door handle broke off in my hand while opening the car door. I took it to the dealership for repair at a cost of $237....should have just ordered the part and replaced it myself....or switched out the one from the rear passenger door (lol) since we dont use that door anymore. Wednesday, 11/17/21, the driver front door latch failed. It would not have been much of an issue, but we were not home and I had to drive home with the window down and holding the door closed. This caused my husband, who already has anxiety issues, MUCH anguish. I now also had to deal with his having a panic attack while driving, with the window down and holding the door so it would not open while moving. We did stop at the local mechanic and their initial parts search says $245 for parts, plus labor, so roughly $400 this time. I am starting to wonder if the door latches on Chevy cars are just defective and needed to be recalled way before 2016? I know there was a recall on Ford door latches. I have heard instances where the hatch latches have failed on 2011 HHRs, so I know it is just a matter of time before my hatch latch as well as the drivers rear door latch fails.

2011 Chevrolet Hhr recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2011 Chevrolet Hhr.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2011 Chevrolet Hhr car reviews

  1. Zion Hagenes 2024-10-28

The limited visibility and cramped space in this car make it difficult to drive comfortably. As someone who is 5-10, I found that my head touches the roof and my shoulder is pressed against the door, which is far from ideal. It's clear that this car was not designed with comfort in mind.

  2. Levi Schaefer 2024-10-16

If you're looking for a car that provides a great workout with its loose steering and engages brakes, along with some other driving issues such as lights turning on and off and ESC problems, then this might be the car for you.

  3. Emmanuel Rutherford 2024-05-16

The vehicle has experienced several issues, including rusted fuel lines, a faulty timing chain, a detached rear view mirror, intermittent stereo function, a broken door handle, and malfunctioning seat belts, despite being only 6.5 years old. These issues have been addressed and resolved with confidence and expertise.

  4. Toni Windler 2024-04-29

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with my car, which I have owned for two years now. While I love the style of the car, I have unfortunately had to put thousands of dollars into it due to various issues. For example, the stereo doesn't work when it rains, and there are known wiring issues with this model. Additionally, there was an ignition switch recall that was more like a warranty than a recall. The car also has a shifting issue, and I anticipate that the fuel filters will need to be replaced in the near future. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to find a mechanic who is well-versed in repairing this type of car. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this car, especially since it requires constant repairs, particularly once it reaches 100,000 miles. I hope this information is helpful to you.

  5. Abel Champlin 2024-04-05

I've been driving this car for about a month and a half now. Overall, it's an okay car, but not great. Fortunately, GM is offering huge discounts, which makes it a more attractive option. I was looking for something larger than a compact car after owning a van for a while, and this car is a good size compared to small SUVs. However, the Ecotech engine is quite loud and can be startling at crossings, which can be annoying. Additionally, the gas mileage is not great, and the creaks around the dash can be bothersome. Lastly, the outside air temperature sensor is off by 5-10 degrees. If you're looking for a car, you may want to consider the Mazda 3 or a similar option.

Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned your 2011 Chevy HHR LT flex fuel car didn't handle well in the snow, but wow, over 221,000 miles is impressive! I hope you enjoyed driving it. I also see that you've upgraded to a 2013 Chevy Equinox AWD LTZ, that sounds like a great choice! Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

  2. Orin Steuber 2024-08-25

My wife and I purchased this car about a year ago and we absolutely love it! The ride is so quiet and smooth. Even with 35k miles on it, it still runs like a dream. The automatic transmission is incredibly smooth and the 2.2 - 4 cylinder engine is surprisingly peppy. We can easily fit all of our groceries and our newborn's equipment in the hatch. On average, we get between 26.5-28mpg which is fantastic. Overall, we have had a great experience with this fun little car and we are disappointed that it has been discontinued!

  3. Jacques Schaden 2024-06-25

Hey there! Just a quick note to let you know that it looks like you might have meant to say 'Tighter inside'. Hope that helps!

  4. Florian Breitenberg 2024-05-22

This car is a great value! If you compare it to other cars with similar features, you'll find that it's $4,000 cheaper, even when compared to GM models. It's perfect for both highway and city driving, although it's not the best choice if you need to tow a boat from the hills of PA to Florida. I personally drive 25,000 miles a year and my HHR has 80K miles on it. I only had to take it to the dealer once last month for a door lock/key FOB/RFID issue, which they couldn't figure out. Other than that, I've been able to do all the maintenance myself or at Sears in the mall.
