Honda Pilot problems

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common Honda Pilot problems

Based on complaints from owners of Honda Pilot cars, several common problems have been reported over the years. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Transmission Failures: One of the most serious problems reported with Honda Pilots is transmission failure. This issue is particularly associated with the 2003 model but has also been observed in other model years. Transmission failure can be a costly repair and poses a safety risk, potentially leading to loss of control while driving.
  2. Excessive Oil Consumption: Excessive oil consumption is another common problem among Honda Pilots, especially in certain model years. This issue can lead to engine damage and overheating if not monitored and managed properly. Keeping track of oil levels and topping up regularly can help mitigate this problem.
  3. Peeling Paint: While primarily a cosmetic concern, peeling paint on Honda Pilots can lead to more severe issues in regions with wet weather or high rust levels. Although not a critical mechanical problem, it may require repainting to maintain the vehicle's appearance and prevent further damage.
  4. Recurring Fault Codes: Recurring fault codes can be frustrating for Honda Pilot owners, as they indicate false issues with the vehicle's sensors. While not inherently dangerous, these codes can mask real problems if ignored, potentially leading to unintended damage to the vehicle.
  5. Fuel Injector Failure: Fuel injector failures have been reported as a common issue with Honda Pilots. Repairing fuel injector problems can be expensive and impact the vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency.

These problems highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection when considering purchasing a used Honda Pilot. Being aware of these common issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions and be prepared for potential maintenance or repair costs associated with these specific problems.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-06
  • VIN: 5FNYF18308B
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Failure of Honda Pilot OEM jack. On 11/04/24 I was jacking up the right rear wheel of my 2008 Honda Pilot when the OEM scissor jack I was using suddenly and loudly broke, allowing the wheel to come down violently. Note that I was jacking the vehicle on a firm, level surface, using the reinforced jacking point as instructed in the vehicle manual, and that the vehicle did NOT fall off of the jack; the jack simply broke. I removed the jack from under the vehicle and inspected and tested it. The threaded rod in the jack would no longer turn smoothly and when testing the jack, it would not lift any weight without falling back down. Summary: Failure of 2008 Honda Pilot jack Failure did put me at risk when jacked wheel suddenly fell. Jack has not been inspected or tested by dealer, etc, Jack failed without warning. Incident not reported to police, insurance, etc. Jack IS available for inspection.

Honda Pilot 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H54HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On October 24th I was parked at a rest area and started the engine on my 2017 Honda Pilot. When I did I heard a knocking in the engine and the oil light came on. I immediately shut the engine off and checked the oil. I contacted a wrecker and had it towed to the nearest Honda Dealership. I was advised that it’s probably a faulty Rod bearing. I did research and found out there was a recall on the 2016, 2018, 2019 pilots but skipped my year except the 2016 Ridgeline. I contacted Honda Corporate and they stated I had to get a physical inspection done at the Honda dealer again and it might or might not be covered. I did not get a definitive answer. I don’t understand when the 2016 and 2018 have a recall for an issue that occurred on my car, but my car is not included on the recall and I will probably be out a minimum of $10k for a faulty designed engine. Make note my vehicle has only 80k miles

Latest negative Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Brook Cassin 2025-08-18

    Vehicle year: 2021

The 2021 Honda Pilot experienced a serious malfunction that put my family's safety at risk. Despite attempts to resolve the issue, the vehicle's electrical systems continued to fail, resulting in a prolonged wait for a tow truck. As a result, I have decided to return the vehicle to the dealership and pursue legal action.

  2. Arnulfo Collier 2025-08-17

    Vehicle year: 2016

This car has had some issues, but I have taken care of it with all maintenance done and freeway miles. However, I recently found out that I need a new transmission, which is an expensive replacement. Despite this, I am confident in my decision to own this vehicle and stand by its quality. I have also addressed some minor issues with the stereo and brakes, but overall, I am satisfied with my Honda. While the recommended dealer service may seem costly, I understand the importance of regular maintenance to keep my car running smoothly. I trust in Honda's engineering and will continue to be a loyal customer.

  3. Merl Beer 2025-08-16

    Vehicle year: 2005

The engine of my car blew at 74k miles, despite being garage kept and following the maintenance schedule at the dealer. Unfortunately, Honda Headquarters and Rt 23 Honda in Pompton Plains NJ did not provide any assistance or consideration. The car was running well until it sat in the garage for a week while I was on vacation. Upon starting the car, it made a rattling noise and lurched forward. I had the car towed to the dealer, who started the car to diagnose the problem. Unfortunately, this caused the connecting rod to push through the block and oil pan, resulting in a blown engine. When the dealer asked if I had driven through high water, I confirmed that I had not. Honda is requesting $6+K for the repair. Despite this setback, I am confident that we can find a solution to this issue.

I initially wanted the AWD Pilot, but ended up with the FWD Special Edition. I live in South Carolina where the winter months are usually mild, but this year has been an exception. Unfortunately, the 2022 Pilot's snow mode doesn't come with an explanation for FWD models. I was disappointed with the Pilot's performance in snow, slush, and ice conditions, as I was unable to exit my neighborhood even with snow mode engaged, while RWD pickups were able to do so. Although I learned to drive in the snow in the North, the Pilot did not handle well on plowed/salted roads, and I didn't feel like I had the control I'm used to from other FWD vehicles. The paddle shifters were also useless for controlling speed on down slopes, as they automatically upshifted when a certain speed was reached. Other manufacturers allow the low gear to stay engaged to help maintain control on downgrades. Additionally, the forward collision system's sensors were too sensitive, triggering the system when the reflections of headlights off the road from oncoming vehicles were detected, even when the system was set at its lowest sensitivity setting. Despite the Pilot's comfort, ample cargo space, and nice options, I'm doubtful I will lease another one when my current lease is up.

As a long-time Toyota customer, I had never considered owning a Honda. However, after test driving the new Highlander, I found the interior to be cramped and the 4 cylinder turbo engine underwhelming. That's when I discovered the 23 Pilot. This vehicle is not only beautiful in person, but also spacious with plenty of room for passengers and cargo. It has impressive power when needed for passing and is packed with features. Plus, it's so much fun to drive that I actually look forward to my daily commute! Although I have a lot to learn about the newer technology, I'm excited to explore all of the amenities and creature comforts that my previous vehicle, a 2013 Toyota Highlander, didn't have. However, I did experience a moonroof/windshield leak with my new vehicle after only 300 miles. Apparently, this is a common issue with this model. If you own one, be sure to keep an eye on your headliners. I'm taking it to the dealership next week to be fixed and hoping for no rain in the meantime.

I've had the pleasure of test driving several 3 Row SUVs to find the best value option. After trying out the Grand Jeep Cherokee, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Highlander, Cadillac XT6, and a few others, I finally got behind the wheel of the Honda Pilot. In my opinion, it was the clear winner. The Pilot was smooth, elegant, and intelligent without any unnecessary frills. Its unique design makes it a joy to drive, and it's fuel-efficient compared to other V6 SUVs in its class. I ended up purchasing the Pilot and I'm thrilled with every aspect of it.

I have 4 children but didn't want a mini van. I looked at every SUV and decided on this one. The 3rd row can even fit my 6'2

I purchased this car with over 100K miles on it and have owned it for about a year. So far, it has been fantastic! The car has great power and runs very well. A couple of months ago, I hit a large Ohio deer and I barely felt the impact. My family and I were completely safe, which made me very happy that I bought this SUV. Last winter, I was unable to get my Odyssey up my long driveway in the snow, but with this SUV, it's a breeze. The leather seats are comfortable and the kids love the heated seats. Two areas of concern: the sound system requires a bit of adjustment when switching from talk to music, and the tailgate height when open may be a bit high. Other than those minor issues, this vehicle is a great value. It performs very well in icy and snowy conditions.

I bought a 2015 Pilot before they changed the body style, just like a previous blogger did. I prefer boxy SUVs for their practicality, and the 2015 model has almost as much volume in the back as a Yukon. Honda engines are known for their reliability, which is the most important attribute any vehicle can have - bells and whistles aside. Why waste your day off chasing mechanical problems? In the few times I have had mechanical problems with Honda products over the years, the parent company has always stepped up and made things right. I wish our U.S. auto industry would learn from Honda's example. Despite the competition, this is my third Pilot and I have no complaints.
