Honda Pilot problems

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common Honda Pilot problems

Based on complaints from owners of Honda Pilot cars, several common problems have been reported over the years. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Transmission Failures: One of the most serious problems reported with Honda Pilots is transmission failure. This issue is particularly associated with the 2003 model but has also been observed in other model years. Transmission failure can be a costly repair and poses a safety risk, potentially leading to loss of control while driving.
  2. Excessive Oil Consumption: Excessive oil consumption is another common problem among Honda Pilots, especially in certain model years. This issue can lead to engine damage and overheating if not monitored and managed properly. Keeping track of oil levels and topping up regularly can help mitigate this problem.
  3. Peeling Paint: While primarily a cosmetic concern, peeling paint on Honda Pilots can lead to more severe issues in regions with wet weather or high rust levels. Although not a critical mechanical problem, it may require repainting to maintain the vehicle's appearance and prevent further damage.
  4. Recurring Fault Codes: Recurring fault codes can be frustrating for Honda Pilot owners, as they indicate false issues with the vehicle's sensors. While not inherently dangerous, these codes can mask real problems if ignored, potentially leading to unintended damage to the vehicle.
  5. Fuel Injector Failure: Fuel injector failures have been reported as a common issue with Honda Pilots. Repairing fuel injector problems can be expensive and impact the vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency.

These problems highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection when considering purchasing a used Honda Pilot. Being aware of these common issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions and be prepared for potential maintenance or repair costs associated with these specific problems.

Honda Pilot

Is the Honda Pilot a reliable car?

In general, the Honda Pilot can be considered a reliable SUV. Honda has been quick to respond to reports by owners. An early transmission issue was largely sorted out, as was a problem with the gearbox in 2005.

But also a serious safety risk rendering the vehicle dangerous. And unsafe to drive According to some reports. Problem number two sunroof explosions although only a single case has been reported.

What is more reliable, the Honda Pilot or the Toyota Highlander?

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-04
  • Date Complaint: 2024-11-06
  • VIN: 5FNYF18308B
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Failure of Honda Pilot OEM jack. On 11/04/24 I was jacking up the right rear wheel of my 2008 Honda Pilot when the OEM scissor jack I was using suddenly and loudly broke, allowing the wheel to come down violently. Note that I was jacking the vehicle on a firm, level surface, using the reinforced jacking point as instructed in the vehicle manual, and that the vehicle did NOT fall off of the jack; the jack simply broke. I removed the jack from under the vehicle and inspected and tested it. The threaded rod in the jack would no longer turn smoothly and when testing the jack, it would not lift any weight without falling back down. Summary: Failure of 2008 Honda Pilot jack Failure did put me at risk when jacked wheel suddenly fell. Jack has not been inspected or tested by dealer, etc, Jack failed without warning. Incident not reported to police, insurance, etc. Jack IS available for inspection.

Honda Pilot 2017
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H54HB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On October 24th I was parked at a rest area and started the engine on my 2017 Honda Pilot. When I did I heard a knocking in the engine and the oil light came on. I immediately shut the engine off and checked the oil. I contacted a wrecker and had it towed to the nearest Honda Dealership. I was advised that it’s probably a faulty Rod bearing. I did research and found out there was a recall on the 2016, 2018, 2019 pilots but skipped my year except the 2016 Ridgeline. I contacted Honda Corporate and they stated I had to get a physical inspection done at the Honda dealer again and it might or might not be covered. I did not get a definitive answer. I don’t understand when the 2016 and 2018 have a recall for an issue that occurred on my car, but my car is not included on the recall and I will probably be out a minimum of $10k for a faulty designed engine. Make note my vehicle has only 80k miles

Latest negative Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Craig Cole 2025-06-19

    Vehicle year: 2019

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2019 Honda Touring that I purchased in April. After driving it for a short while, I noticed a squeak in the engine compartment when I let up on the gas or applied the brakes. I took it to the dealer in June, and they attempted to repair it by replacing the transmission. However, the squeak persisted. After further investigation, the Honda Technical Rep recommended replacing the engine mounts, but unfortunately, the squeak was still present. After performing a deep A/C vacuum/drying, the squeak was still there, and Honda Tech then said it was the A/C expansion valve. Although Honda refused to replace the valve, they stated that it was a normal characteristic of the vehicle. I was surprised to hear this, especially since three other customers had complained about the same issue, and they also found a new car on the lot with the same problem. I contacted Honda Customer Care in July, but unfortunately, my claim was denied in August. The Customer Care Rep indicated that they were handling other customer complaints with the same issue. I'm still confused as to why Honda continued to try to fix my car if they thought the squeak was a normal characteristic. It wasn't until they couldn't fix it after three attempts that they decided it was a normal characteristic. I'm assuming that not all 2019 Honda Pilot Touring cars have this issue. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thank you for your help!

    Vehicle year: 2022

TL;DR - Hello, we recently purchased a brand new 2022 Honda Pilot from Hendrick Honda of Charlotte. Unfortunately, less than 2 months later, on December 30, 2021, the car dropped a valve 3 hours into a 7 hour road trip, destroying the engine, and stranding us in the dark and cold. We waited 7.5 hours only to hear that there was no timeframe for replacing the engine and weren’t able to pick up our car again for about 2 weeks. We are disappointed with the situation and concerned about our safety. We have been loyal Honda customers for a long time and expected better from Honda. We kindly request that Honda replace the car as we believe it is the right thing to do. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Hey there! I wanted to share some information with you about the 2019 Honda's infotainment system. Unfortunately, there seems to be a defect in many of the vehicles that affects several features, including Apple Carplay, bluetooth, USB audio, AM/FM radio, and even the backup camera. Even after turning the car off for hours, the issue persists. While it's definitely frustrating, I did want to let you know that there are ongoing efforts to address this problem, including class action lawsuits against Honda. If you're considering purchasing this car, it may be worth doing some additional research to see if this issue has been resolved. Thanks for listening!

Overall, I think it's a good car. I previously owned a Nissan Armada and found it to be too big for my liking. The fit and finish of this car is great. However, I did experience an issue with the car pulling to the right. It took four visits to the dealership before they acknowledged the issue, which was frustrating. I recommend test driving the car before purchasing it. It's worth checking if your car is listed in the service bulletin, which the dealer may not disclose. If it is, I suggest considering a different car.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We recently upgraded from a 2007 Odyssey to a 2019 Pilot EX-L and we're really enjoying the drive, interior space, and tech features. However, we did notice that the rear cargo door was installed a bit sloppily, which is disappointing. We noticed that the spacing between the cargo door and the bumper varies by 1/4

I've had the pleasure of test driving several 3 Row SUVs to find the best value option. After trying out the Grand Jeep Cherokee, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Highlander, Cadillac XT6, and a few others, I finally got behind the wheel of the Honda Pilot. In my opinion, it was the clear winner. The Pilot was smooth, elegant, and intelligent without any unnecessary frills. Its unique design makes it a joy to drive, and it boasts lower fuel consumption than any other V6 SUV in its range. I'm thrilled to say that I've purchased the Pilot and I absolutely love every aspect of it.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your EX-L w/NAV after having it for a month. It's great that you have a CD changer, iPod connection, XM satellite, & AM/FM radio, even though there are a lot of buttons on the dash. Fortunately, these controls are easily worked with controls on the steering wheel! The built-in Bluetooth is a nice feature, as is the back-up camera mounted over the license plate. The leather seats are comfortable, and the 8-way driver's side seat is also nice. Although there is an issue with the moonroof not closing automatically, I don't mind holding the button for it to close until they have a fix for it. Gas mileage is not great thus far, but I didn't expect it to be the same as my CR-V. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.

The car is great! Although, the all-wheel drive maintenance can be a bit expensive. The engine oil needs to be changed every 3K, and the differential every 5K (6K). However, I found that replacing the air filter with a cold air intake improved the gas mileage and performance off the line. Overall, I would definitely consider buying another one in 12 years!

Just picked up a 23 Honda Pilot Elite. I traded in my 21 Pilot Elite for it. I must say, the 23 is bigger, more comfortable, and has more bells and whistles. This is my ninth Honda and I must say, it's the best riding one yet!

I understand that having two of the same vehicle may sound repetitive, but we often cross the continental divide during winter. We preferred front wheel drive (as we had a minivan), but having an extra two drive wheels has been very reassuring. Although one of us is not a fan of the exterior design, we find comfort in the quality mechanicals. Most people who ride in them have expressed interest in buying one themselves. It's clear that the Pilots' popularity is due to their reliability! We plan to drive them for at least 10 years or 200,000 miles, whichever comes first.
