Honda Pilot problems
The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.
The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.
Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.
The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common Honda Pilot problems
Based on complaints from owners of Honda Pilot cars, several common problems have been reported over the years. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Transmission Failures: One of the most serious problems reported with Honda Pilots is transmission failure. This issue is particularly associated with the 2003 model but has also been observed in other model years. Transmission failure can be a costly repair and poses a safety risk, potentially leading to loss of control while driving.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Excessive oil consumption is another common problem among Honda Pilots, especially in certain model years. This issue can lead to engine damage and overheating if not monitored and managed properly. Keeping track of oil levels and topping up regularly can help mitigate this problem.
- Peeling Paint: While primarily a cosmetic concern, peeling paint on Honda Pilots can lead to more severe issues in regions with wet weather or high rust levels. Although not a critical mechanical problem, it may require repainting to maintain the vehicle's appearance and prevent further damage.
- Recurring Fault Codes: Recurring fault codes can be frustrating for Honda Pilot owners, as they indicate false issues with the vehicle's sensors. While not inherently dangerous, these codes can mask real problems if ignored, potentially leading to unintended damage to the vehicle.
- Fuel Injector Failure: Fuel injector failures have been reported as a common issue with Honda Pilots. Repairing fuel injector problems can be expensive and impact the vehicle's performance and fuel efficiency.
These problems highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection when considering purchasing a used Honda Pilot. Being aware of these common issues can help potential buyers make informed decisions and be prepared for potential maintenance or repair costs associated with these specific problems.
Is the Honda Pilot a reliable car?
In general, the Honda Pilot can be considered a reliable SUV. Honda has been quick to respond to reports by owners. An early transmission issue was largely sorted out, as was a problem with the gearbox in 2005.
What are the most common problems with the Honda Pilot?
But also a serious safety risk rendering the vehicle dangerous. And unsafe to drive According to some reports. Problem number two sunroof explosions although only a single case has been reported.
Do Honda Pilots have transmission problems?
The Honda Pilot is just one of the Honda models that were known to have severe transmission problems. They were part of the huge recall in 2004. Sadly, many of the Honda Pilot's that were repaired as part of the recall had their transmissions fail a second or even a third time.
What is more reliable, the Honda Pilot or the Toyota Highlander?
Both the 2023 Honda Pilot and the 2023 Toyota Highlander scored high in this year's J.D. Power reliability rankings. They actually both scored 81 in terms of quality and reliability, which makes them above average compared to other vehicles.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-11-04
- Date Complaint: 2024-11-06
- VIN: 5FNYF18308B
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Failure of Honda Pilot OEM jack. On 11/04/24 I was jacking up the right rear wheel of my 2008 Honda Pilot when the OEM scissor jack I was using suddenly and loudly broke, allowing the wheel to come down violently. Note that I was jacking the vehicle on a firm, level surface, using the reinforced jacking point as instructed in the vehicle manual, and that the vehicle did NOT fall off of the jack; the jack simply broke. I removed the jack from under the vehicle and inspected and tested it. The threaded rod in the jack would no longer turn smoothly and when testing the jack, it would not lift any weight without falling back down. Summary: Failure of 2008 Honda Pilot jack Failure did put me at risk when jacked wheel suddenly fell. Jack has not been inspected or tested by dealer, etc, Jack failed without warning. Incident not reported to police, insurance, etc. Jack IS available for inspection.

Honda Pilot 2017
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
- VIN: 5FNYF5H54HB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On October 24th I was parked at a rest area and started the engine on my 2017 Honda Pilot. When I did I heard a knocking in the engine and the oil light came on. I immediately shut the engine off and checked the oil. I contacted a wrecker and had it towed to the nearest Honda Dealership. I was advised that it’s probably a faulty Rod bearing. I did research and found out there was a recall on the 2016, 2018, 2019 pilots but skipped my year except the 2016 Ridgeline. I contacted Honda Corporate and they stated I had to get a physical inspection done at the Honda dealer again and it might or might not be covered. I did not get a definitive answer. I don’t understand when the 2016 and 2018 have a recall for an issue that occurred on my car, but my car is not included on the recall and I will probably be out a minimum of $10k for a faulty designed engine. Make note my vehicle has only 80k miles

It's great to hear that you're discovering new features, like the tire fill assist, that make driving even easier. I hope that the historical Honda reliability lives up to your expectations, but it sounds like you're off to a great start with this vehicle!

Congratulations on your new Pilot! It sounds like you are really enjoying all the features it has to offer. I understand that you wish it had a heated steering wheel, but overall it seems like Honda did a great job with this model. It's unfortunate that the newer models didn't meet your expectations, but it's good to hear that you were able to find a 2015 model that you love. Thanks for sharing your experience and enjoy your new ride!

I recently upgraded my 2007 Honda Odyssey to a 2019 Honda Pilot after two months of research and test driving several vehicles. I must say, I absolutely love my new Pilot! It has so many amazing safety and tech features that make driving a breeze. Some of my favorites include the blind spot indicator, distance pacing cruise control, satellite radio/speakers, LED lights, and brake alerts. The storage is also impressive. With one of the third row seats down, I was able to fit three bags, a double stroller, and two folded sports chairs with ease. I chose the EX model because I felt it offered the best value for my money. Overall, I am thrilled with my purchase and hope to enjoy my Pilot for many years to come!

I came across 'The Pilot That Could Do Anything' in my Facebook marketplace search for only $3600. Despite having 174557 miles on it and needing some tlc on the inside (headliner, a good scrubbing, and some Apple CarPlay), it is one of the most comfortable cars I have ever driven. Now, some 17 months later, we are knocking on the door of 190,000 miles and the Pilot is still going strong. It makes me really appreciate the simple engineering approaches made by the design team at Honda in the early 2000s. We have the EX-L 4WD trim and I have to say, this Pilot has done it all so far and has not gotten stuck ever. This is the Pilot that could do anything if you just bought one. Our Pilot is the first Honda for us, and will not be the last. With a baby on the way, it makes me feel good that we have a car that will meet our growing family’s needs well into the future. Recently, I took it on a bachelor weekend from Jacksonville, Florida to Asheville, North Carolina and, being stuffed with 6 men and all of their gear, it not only got us there and back but it also returned -17mpg. Not too shabby. If you are reading this and considering buying one of this vintage, I highly recommend it!

This one-owner SUV has been impeccably maintained by the same mechanic since new. It has been our go-to vehicle for travel due to its comfort and reliability. The engine, transmission, and 4-wheel drive system have all been flawless throughout the years. The heater, air-conditioning, and electronics all perform as new. Although it has collided with deer on two separate occasions, resulting in minor front body damage, both have been repaired. This car has not been involved in a vehicular collision. At my age, we don't need three vehicles, so I'm thinking of selling our 'Blue-eyed Susan' after another 7,500 vacation tour this summer. In my opinion, there is no better or more reliable SUV out there!

UPDATE MAY 2019: I was disappointed to have to replace the transmission on my less than 2 year old car with only 24K miles on it. Unfortunately, it had an unrepairable error for no reason. It was surprising, especially since I have bought so many Honda’s based on their reliability. There have been other issues related to electronics not working in the car as well before & after we replaced the transmission. Needless to say, I will consider other options next time we need a new car. ORIGINAL POST: As someone who owned and loved a 2007 Pilot for 10+ years, I was hoping to love my new 2017 Pilot just as much. However, I am disappointed in the interior design, particularly the storage in the dash/console. It's basically just one giant deep bucket to throw everything into and never to be seen again. While this vehicle is marketed as a family car, the dashboard/storage seems to have been designed by someone who probably doesn't have kids. The 2 previous models of the Pilot were much better in this regard. I also have a few other complaints, such as the parking brake foot pedal getting in the way when trying to get comfortable on long drives. I never had that issue with my 2007 Pilot. Additionally, there is really no bumper on this new version, which means you can't reach up on top of the car from standing on the rear bumper if you ever use a roof rack. Not to mention the cost of repairs if you ever back into something, you will be smashing your back door along with the non-bumper. Finally, some feedback on the radio - I would have loved to still have had some buttons for controls along with the touch screen. The touch screen is not very user friendly, and I consider myself a tech-savvy person. While I was excited to buy my new Pilot after reading so many great reviews, I feel there are so many let downs on this new design. I hope Honda will listen to their customers and make the design better in the future.

The car's handling is more like a truck than an SUV on a uni-body chassis, which is not what was claimed. Additionally, it may be underpowered and not very responsive. However, it's important to note that I have had other SUVs for work that outperformed the Pilot. The DVD navigation is outdated, so it's not worth paying for. Instead, you can use your phone for better technology. Unfortunately, the voice recognition is not very good, and there's no other way to add/delete/pair phones. In contrast, I rented a Toyota and it took less than 15 seconds to learn how to pair a phone. The sound system in this 'loaded' Pilot sounds terrible. When it's time to replace our car, Honda will not be on our short list. It seems like they've lost touch with what's important to consumers, as evidenced by the Civic redesign.

Hey there! I noticed your post about the tires on your 2010 Pilot. That can definitely be frustrating. Have you tried checking the tire pressure yourself? Sometimes the sensors can be a bit finicky. If you do end up needing new tires, I highly recommend shopping around for the best deal. It's always a good idea to get a few quotes before making a decision. Best of luck!

I have a 2014 Honda Pilot that I really enjoy driving. However, I did encounter an issue with the check engine light coming on and off. I was informed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced, which was a bit disappointing. While I did have to pay for a diagnostic check at one Honda service, I was pleasantly surprised when another service center replaced the catalytic converter free of charge. Unfortunately, the check engine light still persists. I have owned several Honda cars in the past, including a Honda Accord with over 150,000 miles, and have experienced similar issues. It's a shame that such a reliable brand is experiencing these problems in newer models.

I used to think Honda was the best too, but unfortunately, our 2005 Pilot had some serious issues. It came to a sudden halt on the Dan Ryan, but luckily it was at 1 a.m. The transmission failed without any warning at just 73,200 miles, and we had to pay for it ourselves. We didn't receive any help from Honda, unlike the 2003 people. Before that, we had issues with ABS locking up, tire pressure sensors that the dealer couldn't fix, peeling bumper paint, leaking doors that had a bad smell, and poor gas mileage. We eventually had to get rid of it after being told that the engine was next to go. It's worth checking out the forums here before you decide to become a Honda fan.
