2014 Honda Pilot problems

honda logo

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common 2014 Honda Pilot problems

The 2014 Honda Pilot has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to transmission failures, excessive oil consumption, peeling paint, recurring fault codes, and fuel injector failures.

Transmission failures are a significant concern, particularly in the 2003 model, but there have also been isolated incidents in other Pilot models. Transmission failures can be expensive to repair and may lead to safety issues, especially in heavy traffic.

Excessive oil consumption is another common problem in the Honda Pilot, particularly in certain model years. This issue can cause engine damage and lead to overheating if the oil level drops too low. However, it can be managed by regularly checking and topping off the oil level.

Peeling paint is primarily a cosmetic issue, but it can lead to more severe problems if left unaddressed, particularly in wet or rust-prone environments.

Recurring fault codes can be irritating and may hide more severe issues. These codes occur when sensors in the Pilot trigger non-existent problems, leading to false alarms and potential damage if legitimate fault codes are ignored.

Fuel injector failures are another common issue in the Honda Pilot, which can be expensive to repair.

When considering purchasing a used Honda Pilot, it is essential to look for a model that can handle high mileage, heavy use, and has been well-maintained by previous owners. The 2010 model is a good option among older Pilots, while newer models have improved reliability ratings.

It is also essential to check the oil level regularly, especially if the Pilot has a history of excessive oil consumption. Additionally, checking for recurring fault codes and addressing them promptly can help prevent potential damage to the vehicle.

What problems does a 2014 Honda Pilot have?

Common problems found on the 2014 Honda Pilot include peeling paint, spark plugs wearing out, and vibrations when braking. Overall, these problems are minor compared to other midsize SUVs with average repair costs as well. Peeling paint is a widespread complaint from owners at around 75,000 miles.

How many miles will a 2014 Honda Pilot last?

Honda Pilot Life Expectancy Factors

The Honda Pilot's life expectancy is upwards of 200,000 miles if properly cared for by Lexington drivers. However, there are many factors that can affect how long a Honda Pilot lasts, from climate to regular maintenance.

What years of Honda Pilot are the best?

Honda Pilots built between 2006 and 2008, as well as 2017 to 2021 models, have considerably fewer reported complaints than other model years. This is despite the investigation into engine stop-start system failures in the later model years and a recall involving the hood latch on 2016 to 2019 Pilots.

Which year Honda Pilot has transmission problems?

The biggest Honda Pilot transmission problems appeared in the 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2019 versions of the Honda Pilot. The rest of the models provide much better in this category.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H50EB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ABS and Vehicle Stability System Indicator lights remain on. OBD code is 66-13 Pressure Sensor (Inside of VSA Modulator control unit) circuit malfunction. The Honda dealership wants $2600 to fix this ($2100 part + $500) labor. They say this part is back ordered. They say I can still drive the vehicle but it will be like driving an old vehicle (no ABS, etc). Researching on the internet show many people with Honda Pilots have this issue (with various error codes). In my opinon, this is a fragile module that causes all sorts of braking and stability issues.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-22
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H56EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Last week I turned on my 2014 Pilot and saw the check engine and VTM-4 dash lights on. When I checked the cause I received error code P0303 - Piston #3 Misfire. Upon researching this error I discovered this issue was addressed by Honda for model years through 2013 because of a class action lawsuit. However models 2014-2015 have the same components and should be addressed/fixed by Honda. I’m lucky to have been in my driveway when I had the misfire, it could have cause an accident had I been on the road. Honda needs to issue a recall for 2014-2015 Pilots.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-19
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H45EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have a 2014 Honda Pilot, and while driving on the road, the car started to violently shake, and the engine turned off. The inspection from dealer indicated code P0303- Misfire cylinder due to fouled #3 spark plug caused by worn piston rings. The spark plug was found to be melted. Honda quoted $4000 to fix the issue, and the concern is that the 2014 model could have also been included in the 2013 and earlier models. It appears that Honda has requested dealers to send in reports if this particular issue has been identified. Even though the dealership was aware of the diagnosis, they have not offered to cover the repairs for this known issue on previous models of Pilots. Instead, they are offering to buy back our vehicle. After further research, there has been a lawsuit "Honda Engine Misfire" with this same issue with Honda Pilot for year 2013 and prior. I want to know if my 2014 used 2013 parts, and therefore resulted to the manufacturer defect on my vehicle. The dealer has offered to buy back the car immediately and has not addressed our concerns with the vehicle having a faulty mfg part. Honda has not responded back to the issue and the issue has not been resolved. My concern is if this issue is not fixed that the engine may further malfunction causing more damage to the car.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-13
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H57EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My wife pulled into a diagonal parking space and was ready to put the vehicle into park when the engine rpm increased dramatically and propelled us into a concrete wall. The front end and left front fender are damaged and the two seat belts locked. The airbag indicator light is on but the air bag did not deploy. Thankfully we suffered no injuries. I contacted American Honda who initially seemed interested. I provided much information and then did not hear back from them. After a month I contacted them again and was told there have been no recalls on our vehicle. I relayed that I am very concerned with what may have caused the acceleration and will be very uncomfortable driving the vehicle after repairs are complete. I was told they will send a factory authorized representative to do an unattended acceleration safety inspection at the collision center where the repairs will be made. While sitting in the waiting room at the collision center I spoke to another person who also owns a Honda Pilot. She told me she also experienced engine acceleration while driving her Honda Pilot. I am not sure if I will feel safe again driving the Honda Pilot even if it goes through a successful safety inspection.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H58EB

SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-04
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H22EB
  • Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: The ABS, brake, and traction control lights come on when the slightest bump in the road is hit. I am being told by the Honda dealership technician that the issue is a $2000.00 sensor that must be replaced but however is on back order. I am told that this very sensor controls the steering, traction, and brakes. I am told that the brakes can disengage or not engage at any time.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-14
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H51EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On May 14 2023 I was driving my 2014 Honda Pilot when the Check Engine, VMT-4, and Stability Control dashboard lights all came on. I took my car to the local Honda dealer who said the #2 spark plug was fouled causing engine misfiring. I was also told I was low on oil. I have not seen any stains underneath the car but I was told the oil was leaking out past the piston rings and out the exhaust. I was also told by the dealer that 3 of the piston rings need replacing. And the cost is $5,000. The Honda service representative said there was no recall on this issue. But I found out later that the 2009 to 2013 Honda Pilots had a similar issue that was corrected by Honda at their cost. So why is there no recall for 2014 Honda Pilots ?? I am not rough on my car when I drive. So why should I have to pay $5,000 to fix a problem that Honda had in the 2009 to 2013 Pilots and apparently have not corrected for the 2014 Pilots ???? A quick internet search reveals other 2014 Pilot owners with similar if not the identical problem that I have.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-17
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H98EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Very loud clunking noise. Camshaft needs to be replaced. I have already had to replace the transmission and timing belt. Honda ordered the part Jan 17. The part is backordered until the end of March. I was told the vehicle should not be driven until the part is replaced because the noise is the camshaft rubbing against other parts of the engine which could cause further damage to the engine. Once the Camshaft completely goes out, then the vehicle will just stop. I do not want to be stranded or cause further damage to the engine. I have been unable to drive my vehicle since Jan 17.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-04
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H65EB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TURNED ON ONE DAY AND THE VEHICLE STARTED RUNNING ROUGH. IMMEDIATELY NOTICED AN IMPACT ON BEING ABLE TO DRIVE SAFELY AND COULD NOT OPERATE THE VEHICLE ANY FURTHER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP AND THEY STATED THE PISTON RINGS NEED TO BE REPLACED AND I AM GETTING A CYLINDER #3 MISFIRE. THEY ALSO STATED THAT MY DEALERSHIP SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIX THIS FOR FREE AS IT SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A RECALL. I HAVE ALREADY BROUGHT THIS VEHICLE IN FOR A CYLINDER #3 MISFIRE AND COST ME A FORTUNE TO FIX. AFTER RESEARCHING I FOUND THAT ONLY MODELS 2009-2013 WERE COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. LOOKING AT THE OTHER NHSTA COMPLAINTS WITH PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE IT IS CLEAR THAT THIS ISSUE HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED AND IS YET STLL HAPPENING IN MODELS 2014. PLEASE EXTEND THIS COVERAGE TO THE YEAR 2014.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-07
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H5XEB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ENGINE
  • Summary: 1. Our 2014 Honda Pilot EXL with only 70,000 miles on it needs a complete engine replacement. The cause was determined to be driving with low oil. The oil life gauge read 50% and we had an oil change only 3 months earlier. No check engine light or low oil light came on, so we had no way of knowing the oil was low unless someone qualified had done a manual inspection which ordinary drivers don't/can't do. In our view the warning lights and/or oil life gauge all failed to warn us of any issue of this nature, therefore letting it get to the point whereby the car needs a complete engine replacement. 2. UNKNOWN. We were lucky that we noticed the smell of fuel/burning close to home so we were thankfully not left stranded on the side of the road. But we were left stranded 500 miles from home while on vacation with no car. It was an absolute nightmare. 3. Yes, we had to tow the vehicle 40 miles to the nearest Honda dealership who confirmed that the engine needs replacing. 4. Yes, the nearest Honda dealership inspected the vehicle. 5. No, and that is the issue. No warnings lamps appeared. The smell of fuel/burning coming from the engine alerted us to the fact that there was an issue and the engine fan carried on running even after the ignition was turned off. Prior to this we had no idea there was an issue with the vehicle. We took care of the vehicle, doing regular oil changes and fluid replacement, etc. FYI - Telling someone that they need to manually check the oil level as you should not rely on the oil life gauge and/or the various warning lights that are designed to detect this problem is both devoid from reality and is akin to telling people that they should manually dip the gas tank to check the gas level as you should not rely on the gas gauge etc. That makes no practical sense and the vast majority of car owners don't do it.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H48EB
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Check engine and VSA light on. Vehicle jerks and shakes/ rough when slowing down. Diagnosis Misfire in cylinder two- foul plug ( that was just replaced), burning up oil rapidly. Piston rings are defective on a car with 75000 k miles. The repair is $5k after I just spent $2k on plugs, coils, replaced again, alternator. Undsafe and feels like car will crash. This was recall on 2013 and class action suit. Not on 2014 after they knew about issue!! Wreckless

The vehicle is available for inspection upon request Also, the; "VTM-4", stability, and "check engine" lights are all flashing --How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Car will NOT exceed 20 mph and it shakes. With young kids in the car, this issue is extremely unpredictable and has occurred several times resulting in us having to pay out of pocket for a clear manufacturer defect. We've had to take the car to the mechanic 4 times in the last 3 years -- service records can be provided. --Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. There is a recall for the 2009-2013 models, but we have the 2014 and have been told by everyone (except the dealer) that this issue/year (2014) should be included in the recall. --Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes, as noted above, the following warning lamps lit... "VTM-4", stability, and "check engine" lights are all flashing THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-08
  • VIN: 5fnyf4h99eb
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: As I was driving home during rush hour, I smelt an odd smell. I thought that it was coming from the vehicle next to me but that vehicle turned and the smell remained. I looked down at my dashboard and the OVER HEATING WARNING LIGHT WAS BRIGHT YELLOW-- I immediately pulled over into a parking lot with my 2 young kids, got them out of the car, and began to try and figure out what was going on. Thank goodness I didn't ignore this issue and that I was able to pull off of the road when I did. This could have been a very unsafe situation for myself, my kids, and other motorists. Prior to this moment there were NO indicators of anything being wrong with the vehicle, there was absolutely no warning of what I am about to describe either. LUCKILY, my husband was nearby and able to pick us up. There was a milky fluid leaking from underneath the car and when my husband opened the hood he said that oil and water had mixed--it looked like something had just exploded. Needless to say I had to have the vehicle towed to a shop. After taking the engine out and sending parts off to a machinist it was determined that the front cylinder head had cracked and the rear cylinder head had to be resurfaced due to the damage. Several mechanics have noted that there is NO REASONABLE EXPLINATION FOR THE CYLINDER HEAD TO CRACK before 200,000 miles. I had just purchased this vehicle in September 2020, it had 72,000 miles on it then. It currently has around 80,000 miles on it. I purchased this vehicle because I thought it would be a SAFE FAMILY VEHICLE but now I'm not comfortable driving it because I'm worried that it will "blowup" on me. I contacted Honda Customer Service and they basically said that nothing can be done to assist me. I have seen an identical scenario posted on here and was shocked by it as well--because I thought that my mechanic wrote it but alas it was someone with the same situation! There is obviously something faulty here and it should be repaired/replaced by Honda!

  • Summary: THE EXTERIOR PAINT STARTED PEELING BY THE SUNROOF THEN THE HOOD AND NOW BY THE BACK WINDOW. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-22
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H74EB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WE HAVE 2014 HONDA PILOT THAT HAD 68,072 MILES ON IT. MY WIFE BELIEVED THAT THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FOR THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED PARK IN OUR DRIVEWAY. ACCORDING TO THE HONDA OWNER'S MANUEL THERE IS A SAFETY FEATURE THAT PREVENTS THE IGNITION KEY FROM BEING REMOVED UNLESS THE VEHICLE IS IN PARK. THE VEHICLE ROLLED BACK INTO A TREE CAUSING OVER $3,000.00 IN PROPERTY DAMAGE. THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED IN THE PAST WITH THE HONDA PILOT (2003-2004) AND THE HONDA ODYSSEY (2003-2004) AND THE ACURA MDX (2003-2006) WHICH WERE THE SUBJECT OF A RECALL BY HONDA. PLEASE SEE NHTSA ACTION NUMBER PE12026. THESE RECALLED VEHICLES AS WELL AS OUR 2014 HONDA PILOT ARE EQUIPPED WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. THEY HAVE A SAFETY INTERLOCK SYSTEM THAT IS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT THE IGNITION KEY FROM BEING REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION UNLESS THE TRANSMISSION IS IN THE PARK POSITION. WHEN THE TRANSMISSION IS NOT IN PARK, THE VEHICLE MAY ROLL UNEXPECTEDLY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR 2014 HONDA PILOT. I CONTACTED HONDA AND THEY COULD HAVE CARED LESS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH THE SAME PRODUCT DEFECT OBVIOUSLY EXISTS AGAIN IN THE NEW MODEL HONDA VEHICLES. THIS PRODUCT DEFECT POSES A HIGH RISK OF DANGER AND HONDA SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO REMEDY THIS DEFECT. I HAVE VIDEOS THAT DOCUMENT THIS DEFECT.

  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2014 Honda Insight and Acura TSX and TSX Wagon, 2014-2015 Honda Crosstour and Pilot vehicles nationwide, as well as certain 2014 Honda FCX Clarity and Fit EV vehicles in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan) and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Honda is also recalling certain 2011-2013 Acura TSX, TSX Wagon and ZDX, Honda Crosstour, Insight, Fit and Pilot vehicles, 2011-2012 Honda Accord and 2011 Honda Civic NGV, Civic, Civic Hybrid and CR-V vehicles in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Lastly, Honda is recalling certain 2010-2013 Acura TSX and ZDX, Honda Crosstour, Fit, Insight and Pilot, 2011-2013 TSX Wagon, 2010-2012 Honda Accord and 2010-2011 Honda Civic NGV, Civic, Civic Hybrid and CR-V vehicles in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag air bag inflators assembled as part of the frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment (such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bags), may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to higher absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began November 6, 2018. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are M2J and S2K.

Negative 2014 Honda Pilot car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my HONDA that I bought back in Oct, 2013. It's my first HONDA and I've put only 32,000 miles on it after 6 and a half years. While I mostly use it for long drives, I have had a few issues with it. Both of the front wheel bearings went out and I had to replace them at 23,000 miles with my own expenses since the warranty had expired. One of the front axles is leaking and both of them were replaced at around 25,000 miles, along with the airbag recall. I've also noticed that this SUV has some kind of vibration that's not related to the tire mounting or balancing, which can be kind of annoying. My advice for you is to do more research before buying your next car or SUV. Don't rely solely on your short test drive or falling in love with how it looks. Let me know if you have any questions!

I have spent a lot of time in this car, but unfortunately, it hasn't been the most comfortable experience. It has caused me some health issues, and I have had to take medication to manage them. The sun-visors broke quite early on, and the parking sensors have been unreliable, causing a few accidents. The stereo lacks bass, and the GPS is difficult to use. The backseat is quite small, and the trunk is not very spacious. However, I appreciate having a car to get around in, and I am grateful for the memories I have made in it.

Hi there! I noticed that you're concerned about the paint issue on your Honda Pilot or Honda Odyssey. Unfortunately, Honda won't be able to fix it since it's not a safety problem. However, have you checked out the Honda Paint Defect Action Group on Facebook? They might have some helpful tips and advice for you!

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned owning a few different Honda Pilots over the years, but have had some trouble with fuel economy and power numbers, as well as a jerky gearbox and slow acceleration. Additionally, you mentioned that the cost of repairing the transmission was quite high. I wanted to share that my personal experience has been positive with the Toyota Highlander and the Honda Odyssey, which might be worth considering if you're in the market for a new vehicle. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

In November 2020, we purchased a 2014 Honda Pilot with 90,000 miles after conducting extensive research. Unfortunately, in March 2021, we noticed that the paint on the front roof of the vehicle had come off. We were surprised to learn that Honda had used faulty paint on their white 2014 models, which has been causing issues. Although Honda has recalled the affected models, they have only done so for 7 years after the car's release. As a result, we were quoted $2,500 for a new paint job, which was disappointing. Additionally, we have experienced some mechanical issues with the car, such as the trunk not opening or shutting properly, the interior lights not functioning correctly, and the car alarm randomly going off. Despite these issues, we are grateful for this experience as it has helped us make an informed decision about our future car purchases. We appreciate your understanding and hope to find a more suitable vehicle in the future.

Great vehicle! It has real 4x4, not just all-wheel drive. I've never had a single issue in 7 years and 80,000 miles. It still runs and handles just like the day I drove it off the lot.

The Honda Pilot is the perfect size for travel, it's roomy and drives well. You might want to consider looking into the CR-V as well.

I had a 2014 Honda Pilot touring and loved it. When it was totaled there was no other car on the market I wanted. I hunted until I found another one. Now I have another with less miles. It's a great family car, perfect for my family of 3 kids, 3 dogs, and my husband. There's nothing I can't do with this car.

    That's a wonderful car!

Bought used but it feels and drives like new!
