2011 Honda Pilot problems

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common 2011 Honda Pilot problems

The 2011 Honda Pilot is known for its roomy interior, smooth V6 engine, and excellent crash test scores. However, it also has some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most frequent issues is excessive oil consumption, which starts to show up around 100,000 miles. Some owners choose to monitor the oil level and top it off as needed, while others replace pistons and rings, which can cost over $2,000. This problem is not unique to the 2011 model and has been reported in other Pilot years as well.

Another common issue is easily chipping paint, which tends to occur in the first 50,000 miles. The clear coat tends to chip easier than some other vehicles, and the only solution is to repaint the affected areas at a cost of $1,000 per panel.

Deteriorating interior upholstery is also a problem at around 90,000 miles. The vinyl and cloth wear out quickly and have to be replaced, costing around $1,200. This issue is not specific to the 2011 model and has been reported in other Pilot years as well.

There are 11 recalls for the 2011 Honda Pilot, most of which are minor and include front suspension damper bolts, seat belts, and various airbag issues.

The 2011 Honda Pilot has a well-maintained lifespan of over 250,000 miles, similar to many other popular midsize SUVs. Regular annual maintenance costs are reasonable at $594 per year, according to Repair Pal.

The 2011 Honda Pilot is available in four models: LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. Technology is a bit dated since it was last updated in 2009, but there are improvements for 2013, adding a new premium navigation system and standard backup camera.

In summary, the 2011 Honda Pilot has some common problems, including excessive oil consumption, chipping paint, and deteriorating interior upholstery. However, it is a reliable vehicle with a well-maintained lifespan of over 250,000 miles. Regular annual maintenance costs are reasonable, and there are four models to choose from, with improvements available in later years.

Was 2011 a good year for Honda Pilot?

The 2011 Honda Pilot has plenty of family-friendly appeal with excellent crash safety scores and a roomy third row. But outside of that, it comes up as merely average.

How many miles will a 2011 Honda Pilot last?

The Honda Pilot's life expectancy is upwards of 200,000 miles if properly cared for by Lexington drivers. However, there are many factors that can affect how long a Honda Pilot lasts, from climate to regular maintenance.

What years of Honda Pilot are good?

Honda Pilots built between 2006 and 2008, as well as 2017 to 2021 models, have considerably fewer reported complaints than other model years. This is despite the investigation into engine stop-start system failures in the later model years and a recall involving the hood latch on 2016 to 2019 Pilots.

My Hackers are my Employer and the Operations Manager. The same hacking to their company vehicles are being done to employees personal vehicles. Forced Limp Mode, Power distribution, Fake sensors malfunctions, and Alarm controls are reoccurring. My entire communications network is compromised. When I called Honda (888) 528-7876) from my Boost Mobile iPhone, the automated system did not recognize my T-Mobile Android phone number that is registered on MyHonda. The person I spoke to asked my name, Vin number, and then asked if the T-Mobile phone number is the one associated with my Honda Pilot. After I mentioned the automated system did not have that number, I was to my number popped up as a caller ID. 2 different phones on 2 different networks acting as one!?!? 05/24/2023 At 11:55 am, I travel from my work to tha gas station. I put air in a tire that seems to leak air sporadically. After about 2 mins, my pilot power systems light turns on. I have already had my battery and systems tested less the 2 months prior, but travel down hwy for 15 miles. While having battery looked at, my pilot deactivated the air-bag system. The Auto Zone employee attempted to pull check engine codes. The first 2 attempts the pilot would not read anything at all. After I explained the previous instances when this had happened before with multiple other vehicles, he was finally able to read multiple (undisplayed) codes. As I travelled to the mechanic, I received a mystery call. Did not answer, but called back on android phone. It was a fund raising auto number. My pilot is hacked and using false time stamps. I was told this was discovered before, but never addressed as a form of undetectable hacking.

My 2011 Honda Pilot has been seriously rained inside of and snowed in causing interior damage as well as possible electrical damage, that is very well a safety issue. The immediate safety issue is that the vehicle is rendered open to any criminal who may hide inside to attack the owner, this is a breach of security that all vehicle owners expect their vehicle to stay locked and safe. • Summary: We have our truck services only at the dealership. My husband had the oil changed just two months ago. He had to take the truck back to the dealership last week because it was making a strange noise and when he checked the oil gage it was empty. When he got to the dealership the lady that helped us told us this was due to excessive oil consumption. I was able to look at the website www.vehiclehistory.com/articles/honda-pilot-excessive-oil-consumption-recalls and found out there is a documented issue with the 2009-2013 Honda pilots. I purchased this vehicle in 2013 and and did not have a problem until now. Honda needs to fix this as this fall under this recall even if the VIN number was not initially associated with this. This vehicle has only been serviced at Russ Darrow Honda in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and I have never been advised of anything until now. I really need help with this. I have been a loyal Honda owner as this is my third Honda and I am not in position to purchase a new vehicle so please help. EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H65BB
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Rear view mirror is hazy. This is a problem with most Honda Pilots 2011. The problem is most likely with adhesion or the chemicals tat make up the camera screen and electronics inside the mirror. It is too dangerous to drive with a hazy rear view mirror. Also, headlights get hazy on the Honda Pilot 2011. I think problem is adhesion. In other words, Honda is either did not apply adhesion properly on their lights and mirrors or they used poor material. Please issue a recall and fix these issues.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-05
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H54BB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The front cylinder head valve cover developed an erosion hole adjacent to the middle spark plug (#5) tube cutout. The valve cover is available for inspection. This portion of the valve cover is directly above the oxygen sensor on the exhaust manifold. Engine oil could leak onto the hot manifold and ignite, causing an engine fire. I have not taken this cover to a Honda dealer or independent service center as I do my own maintenance work on my vehicles. This failure occurred after 153,235 miles and there were no indications, messages, or symptoms. The hole was not leaking oil as it was filled with valve cover material that had degraded and turned into powder. The powder was easily dislodged after probing with a metal pick, leaving a hole in its place. The #5 ignition coil was inspected and was visually unremarkable. The engine was not misfiring. The MIL lamp was off and there were no DTC codes present. A web search found several other complaints about this issue (with pictures of incidents of greater severity) and it is not confined to Honda vehicles.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-27
  • VIN: 5FNYF4H6XBB
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My Honda Pilot 2011 EXL w/ AWD displayed a flashing engine light while driving, which is a sign of a serious engine problem. When it was towed to the Honda dealership, the service representative told me that a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) of P0302 was recovered, which occurs when the spark plugs misfire, and is fully described in Honda's Service Bulletin 13-082: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2018/MC-10152434-0001.pdf. I was told by the Honda service rep that one spark plug was fouled and covered with engine oil, and that I needed to clean the pistons and replace three piston rings along with the spark plug, a $3500+ repair. This costly problem with some Hondas was the subject of a class action lawsuit (Soto v. American Honda Motors), and is known to cause a sudden loss of power while driving, putting the driver, passengers, and other nearby vehicles at significant risk. By way of background, I began experiencing intermittent and temporary electrical system failure and increased oil consumption as early as January, 2021, which was never fully diagnosed until it progressed to a state of engine failure in September. Honda was clearly aware of this problem, yet it failed to take preemptive action to protect Honda owners and others. Rather than recalling vehicles with defective Program Control Module (PCM) software/firmware and updating it on affected vehicles (a relatively inexpensive fix), they allowed drivers to continue to operate their Hondas, effectively playing vehicular Russian Roulette, until their engines failed catastrophically, like mine did.

Negative 2011 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Arnulfo Hirthe 2024-09-26

In November 2010, I purchased the new 2011 Pilot. Unfortunately, in the first few weeks of owning the car, I received a recall notice for the front wheel axle. Although it was fixed, it now squeaks loudly. As a loyal Honda owner of 20 years, I had higher expectations. When I brought it back to the dealership for the squeak, they asked me to fill out a survey. However, even after filling out their online follow-up survey, I have not received any response. I am disappointed with my Honda dealership in Louisiana. Perhaps the Jeep Grand Cherokee could be a good alternative, as I recently rented one and found the gas mileage to be far better. As a long-time Honda owner, I am disappointed and frustrated.

This Honda Pilot has been a reliable vehicle for the past 9 years, and I intend to keep it for another 5. Although it recently started burning oil, I am aware that this is a known issue and Honda has issued a service bulletin for it. While the previous generation Pilots had a recall, Honda will only fix the issue if the vehicle is still under warranty. Despite this setback, I am confident in the Pilot's overall reliability and performance. In fact, during a recent snowstorm, the Pilot was able to navigate through 8 inches of unplowed roads with ease, thanks in part to its full-time 4WD and new Michelin Defender all-season tires. The Pilot's spacious interior and comfortable, supportive seats make it an ideal choice for long trips. Although the materials used in the interior are not of the highest quality, the Pilot's tech features, such as the navigation and DVD entertainment system, are impressive for its age. Overall, I am confident in the Pilot's ability to continue to perform well for years to come.I strongly prefer a knob/button interface to touch screen technology, as it allows for greater accuracy. While the wireless headphones that came with the car are functional, I have only used them twice.

  3. Martin Kiehn 2024-02-19

My wife and I have owned 5 Hondas in the past. I have always been impressed with their gas mileage, which exceeded the MPG window label. However, with the 2011 Pilot, which is advertised at 16 to 23 MPG, I am getting 13 to 19 MPG. Although I have only owned the car for a month, I have already had a recall for the bolts on the front end that needed to be tightened, as the wheels might come off. Despite this, I still love the car as it rides like a dream and has so much room. I hold Honda to a high standard and expect no more problems. If I do encounter any issues, I will make sure to let everyone know. It is disappointing that Honda lied about the gas mileage on this car, but I am hopeful that they will make it right.

  4. Rocio Rippin 2024-01-25

I've been having some trouble with my Honda Pilot, specifically with the sunroof not working properly. Although the dealer reset it once and it worked for a while, I'm now experiencing the same issue again - the sunroof can't be closed all the way when it's opened. Additionally, I've noticed that there's quite a bit of road noise when driving the Pilot, which can be a bit overwhelming. I recently test drove a Toyota Highlander and found it to be much quieter. The gas mileage on the Pilot isn't great either, with only around 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the freeway. I'm considering trading in my Pilot for a Highlander. Overall, I feel like I may have wasted my money on the Honda, but I'm hopeful that I can find a better fit with the Highlander.

Positive 2011 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Earl Gislason 2024-11-25

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your new vehicle! It sounds like it's the perfect fit for your family of five, especially with the spacious third row and ample cargo room. It's great that you were able to find a more affordable option that still met all of your needs. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  2. Kale Weissnat 2024-11-19

I absolutely adore my Honda Pilot touring! It has never let me down. The only minor issue I've had is with the hand rest and console upholstery, but I've had it reupholstered and it's good as new. I noticed that the newer models have more durable materials that won't rip, but I just love the design of the older one. I'm patiently waiting for Honda to release a more square-looking model again. Overall, I must say that Honda is the best car brand I've ever owned! Even their service team is amazing.

  3. Deontae Hartmann 2024-11-05

As a previous Honda consumer, I was aware of the excellent resale value that Honda offers. Given the problems that Toyota was facing, we decided to go with Honda. I really appreciate the boxy body style, and although the interior design takes some getting used to, it's not too bad. However, I think the quality of the interior could be improved. I was surprised to find Styrofoam in the door jam, which seems cheap. The legroom is fantastic for tall people, both in the front and second row. The gas mileage is average for an SUV of similar size, which is no surprise. Some people have complained about road noise, but I was told that the tires are to blame. Despite this, the ride is smooth. The seats are firm, although not as plush as some of the other models I test drove.

  4. Casimir Blanda 2024-10-04

I recently sold my 1999 Pathfinder and upgraded to the Pilot. The Pilot is larger in every dimension, has full-time 4WD, 70 more horsepower, and is heavier, yet still manages to get better gas mileage! The car has a great unique style both inside and out, decent power, good braking (contrary to what the Edmunds review says), and a usable 3rd row. The boxy design allows for ample headroom, and there's no middle hump, so three people can sit comfortably. On a recent 250-mile highway trip, I got over 26 MPG, and the tire pressure monitoring system saved me twice. The second-row windows roll all the way down, and the optional built-in sunshades are fantastic. The flash drive for music and hands-free cell phone interface work well and are clear.

  5. Cornelius Hamill 2024-09-28

I bought this car back in 2012 with 45k miles on it, and it now has about ~80k miles. It has been very reliable, and all I have done is perform scheduled maintenance. It gets around 19 mpg, but if you drive with a light foot, you can get around 22 mpg on average. I love the ECO mode that switches the engine to 4 cylinders when driving on highways. The only thing I wish it had was rear A/C vents in the roof instead of having them at knee-level. Since it's a Honda, I fully expect it to last for years to come! It's a great car, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good, reliable SUV. One thing that is a bit weird, and might be unique to mine, is that the buttons on the radio occasionally do not work, but the volume and tune knobs work fine.
