2022 Honda Pilot problems

honda logo

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: My name is [XXX] , I am the owner of a 2022 Honda Pilot, and the safety of this vehicle is now of great concern to me. My vehicle has done up to 35,000 mileages. On Friday, [XXX] as I was driving on the highway, this vehicle suddenly stopped without warning. All the lights on the dashboard came up and I received 5 messages indicating that the following had problems: Emission System, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Electric Power Steering, Transmission System, and Adaptive Cruise Control. This is a very dangerous and life-threatening hard stop that occurred in the middle of the highway, and I had to tow the vehicle to the DACARS Honda Dealership in Bowie, Maryland. I must state that my service history is up to date as of the time of this incident. The dealership carried out a diagnosis and confirmed all the problems from the messages that I received and agreed to fix them because the vehicle is still under Manufacturer's Warranty. I am really concerned about the safety of this vehicle and the lives of other owners and road users who may not be as lucky as I was on [XXX]. I recommend a very detailed safety evaluation on this Model of Honda and if possible, immediately instruct the replacement of all the safety problems/parts listed above pending the outcome of this investigation/evaluation, and ultimately instruct a recall of this model of Honda. Thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-19
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H51NB
  • Components: WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: My vehicle started making unusual noise when moving, noise appears like something is wrong with the tires, it sounds like there is a bubble in tire but there is none and this noise is audible inside while driving. We first noticed it when we took a trip to Kansas city few weeks ago and at that time my vehicle odometer was about 31600 miles only, Also to add to that when brakes are applied vehicle is not slowing down consistently, it will be like breaks are applied and release and applied and released. We believe that there is manufacturing defects with the parts as we have not abused our vehicle in any way and if we are right similar issues should surface with others vehicles as well.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-04
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H24NB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Car brake warning pops up on dashboard when there is no object directly in front of the car. This occurs when there is oncoming traffic in another lane and it has happened when I am going over train tracks. It's as if the concrete curb is in front of me. My car has never stopped abruptly. A week prior the blind spot, emissions and transmissions light popped up and the car was semi drivable for me to make it to the dealer. I was told that it was my oil pressure switch that needed to be replaced just for my car to die 5 days later

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-18
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H87NB
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The vehicle mistakingly thinks it recognizes an obstacle, and wrongly activates the brakes and forward collision warning. This recently occurred during highway driving with no apparent obstacles multiple times. Also (maybe related) when using adaptive cruise control, rather than adapt to a slower vehicle’s speed in-front of it, the Honda Pilot applies strong pressure on the brakes to adjust its pace. In other cars I’ve driven (Tesla, Subaru, Volvo, Chrysler, Kia) the response is a much more delicate “throttle release”. However, the Pilot mostly applies throttle or aggressively applies the brakes in situations that are very predictable and do not require the brakes to be applied. The result is an aggressive/frantic behavior, not adaptive. I keep the car/safety sensors clean and free of obstacles, decals, etc.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H57NB

This happened three times and I almost got killed when the car stalled and oncoming traffic had to brake hard to prevent from hitting me. No fault of my own. Faulting design with shift in form of a "paddle" on the steering wheel.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle has had issues of complete loss of power while driving and while awaiting at a light even with the fuel saving mode deactivated so that it wouldn't shut off at every stop. SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-23
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H29NB
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Honda Pilot. The contact stated while driving 5 MPH and making a turn, there was an abnormal loud banging sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact stated that she looked around and could not determine the cause of the sound. The contact stated that she continued driving; however, the failure recurred while driving on several occasions. The contact stated that she pulled to the side of the road on the last occasion. The contact stated that her husband inspected the vehicle and noticed that the sway bar had fractured and was separated from the bracket on the rear driver's side. The contact stated that her husband tied the sway bar, and she was able to slowly drive to the dealer. The dealer informed the contact that the failure was due to a manufacturer defect and had occurred because the sway bar was not thick enough. The dealer then sent a claim with photos of the failure to the manufacturer, who approved the purchase of a new part and the repair of the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.

Negative 2022 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Waino Heller 2025-01-08

Is the oil pressure switch covered under the powertrain warranty? Despite having to pay for a transmission fluid flush at 30K miles, which was not covered, I was recently informed that the Emission System Problem was caused by a bad oil pressure switch. However, the dealer has refused to cover it under the powertrain warranty. UPDATE 08/25/2022: Unfortunately, one day after the dealer charged me to replace the oil pressure sensor, the Emission System Problem showed up again, and now the Transmission System Problem is also showing up. The car is kicking up at 30MPH and the panel is flickering.

  2. Okey Connelly 2024-09-13

I have been a loyal Honda customer for years, particularly with the Odyssey minivans. However, my experience with the Pilot has not been as positive. While the car is spacious, accessing the third row can be challenging and the ride can be bumpy. Additionally, the car tends to be noisy and the seals around the doors do not seem to be very effective. I have also found that maintenance costs can be surprising, as I have been charged for additional services and fluid changes that were not expected. Dealing with dealerships has also been a challenge, as I have had issues with incorrect diagnoses and long wait times for repairs. Lastly, while the safety feature sensors are sensitive, I have found that they can be overly cautious and make me feel less safe. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the quality and reliability that Honda offers.

  3. Johnson Ryan 2024-09-02

This is my second Honda and unfortunately, it has been giving me some trouble. The body panels were not aligned and there was welding slag on the roof, which was disappointing as I expected better fit and finish from Honda. The car has been in the shop four times due to the check engine light coming on. One time, the dealer kept it for a month, claiming they were waiting on parts. I even filed a case with Honda, but unfortunately, it did not yield the results I was hoping for. Based on my experience, I have decided not to purchase another Honda.

  4. Chauncey Brakus 2024-06-19

If you place a car seat behind the driver's seat, you may encounter an issue where the seat moves back and presses against the baby's car seat, potentially damaging the leather on your car and leaving a deep crease where it was pressing tightly. To avoid this, try positioning the seat more forward so that it does not touch the baby car seat. However, keep in mind that the seat will still switch positions automatically and slide back into the car seat once you turn the car off. While this feature is intended to make it more comfortable to get in and out of the car, it may not be ideal for families with more than one car seat in the car. In my case, I have two car seats. Hope this helps!

Positive 2022 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Jamison Dietrich 2024-11-26

Very comfortable and user-friendly. This is the best vehicle we have purchased.

  2. Braeden Eichmann 2024-11-24

The Pilot is a quality vehicle for the price, and it's great for use around town. However, it may not be the most comfortable option for long drives.

  3. Orlo Krajcik 2024-11-17

I'm so glad to hear that you're satisfied with your vehicle's room and drivability!

  4. Shaun Lindgren 2024-11-16

Upgraded to the 2022 Pilot Touring. I absolutely love this vehicle! It's so much quieter than our previous 2016 Pilot, and it's loaded with all of the safety features that our old one didn't have. The second row captain seats give it a totally different look, which is great. The only thing I wish it had was wireless charging, but other than that, this SUV is perfect!

  5. Jamel Schultz 2024-11-10

The 2022 Honda Pilot is quite similar to the 2016 model that I owned. However, I noticed that a lot more safety features have been added, and now you can adjust things to your liking instead of just relying on the factory settings. I absolutely love this vehicle!
