2018 Honda Pilot problems

honda logo

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common 2018 Honda Pilot problems

The 2018 Honda Pilot has received positive reviews from consumer reports, with high owner satisfaction scores and a smooth ride. However, there are some common problems reported by owners of this vehicle.

One of the most widespread complaints from 2018 Honda Pilot owners is dead batteries, with many experiencing this issue within the first 25,000 miles. This is often due to the numerous electrical accessories in newer SUVs, which can sometimes drain the battery while parked. Replacing a battery costs around $250, while diagnosing any parasitic draw is another $150.

Another common problem with the 2018 Honda Pilot is noise from the brakes, specifically from the rear brake pads. This issue tends to occur around 10,000 miles and is caused by the rear brake pads wearing out quicker than in some other midsize SUVs, leading to excessive noise. Replacing the brake pads costs roughly $300, and if new rotors are needed, they're an additional $400.

Some owners have reported rare transmission issues shifting from first to second gear with the nine-speed automatic transmission. These issues have been reported by some owners in the first 20,000 miles. While there are some transmission software updates that most dealerships will install for free, some owners have had to rebuild the transmission, which costs over $1,200.

There are three recalls on the 2018 Honda Pilot, which is similar to other midsize SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall is for the timing belt teeth, which may separate. Honda will replace the timing belt on affected models for free. The other recalls cover a hood latch and seat rivets, which are not mechanically serious issues.

In summary, the 2018 Honda Pilot has some common problems, such as dead batteries, noise from the brakes, and rare transmission issues. However, most of these problems are minor and lead to average repair costs as the vehicle ages. The Pilot lasts around 250,000 miles and offers good value for a midsize SUV with a spacious cabin.

Does the Honda Pilot have any problems?

Honda Pilots built between 2006 and 2008, as well as 2017 to 2021 models, have considerably fewer reported complaints than other model years. This is despite the investigation into engine stop-start system failures in the later model years and a recall involving the hood latch on 2016 to 2019 Pilots.

What year Honda Pilot has transmission problems?

Several Honda Pilot transmission problems have appeared in multiple years. Specifically, we noticed the worst transmission errors in the 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2019 versions of the Honda Pilot. Watch for these flaws if you own any of these years.

Is the Honda Pilot a long lasting car?

The Honda Pilot is not only reliable but also known for its impressive longevity. Many Honda Pilots have been known to last up to 200,000 miles with proper care, and some units have even approached 300,000 miles, underscoring the vehicle's longevity.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H37JB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Honda informed me of the recall of my vehicle back in January 2024. I have tried to attempt to get this fixed at my local dealership. I just took my vehicle in for service and was told they had no update as to when parts would become available for this recall. This recall happened because of the dangers that the faulty fuel pump presents to consumers and I'm not seeing enough to be done by Honda to rectify this in a reasonable timeframe. What happens if something happens to my vehicle or my safety as a result of Honda being unable to fix this defect?

Which is bring the vehicle in for a transmission service every 20000 to 30000 mile for service at a cost of $500-600 to me. Which is less than half of the recommended interval. They have been treating the transmission with an additive up until this point.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H30JB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The components of my vehicle that were affected is from the power train and emissions.Honda issued an TSB on August 2023 for this. The warning light on my vehicle is now illuminated. I have a DTC code P0471 stored on my vehicles computer and can no longer pass a smog chech without the problem being repaired. This issue has impacted my vehicles torque converter. When I drive at high speeds my car shakes and I get a warning that says transmission system problem. Also the transmission slips and has poor fuel mileage. Honda extended the warranty for this part because it is prone to failure. My vehicle was diagnosed at Gardena Honda on Sep 4,2024. The service advisers confirmed that my vehicle has the issue that the warranty was extended on. However, due to my vehicle having a salvage title they will not honor that warranty. This issue should have been recalled instead of extending the warranty. Other pilot owners may pose a serious risk to themselves and others as Honda failed to notify myself and other about the risks of having a defective part on the vehicle. I can no longer drive my vehicle because of the risk involved. The dealer quoted me $5000.00 to repair. Federal law requires car manufacturers to repair any issues that arise from emissions regardless of bad title. Honda refused to repair on 9/4/2024.

Moisture and degradation of the factory installed windshield adhesive can cause electrical faults, mold, a loose windshield, and other issues that can disable the vehicle and/or cause bodily harm. The dealer noted and advised about the possibility of the adhesive degradation before the vehicle was inspected, which confirms this is a common issue with this vehicle. Upon inspection, they advised that the windshield adhesive was the issue. The issues/symptoms presented themselves during recent and prolonged rain events at which time it was reported to the nearest authorized dealer. The local dealer claims a crack in the windshield as the cause of the problems. Unfortunately, there are no cracks in the area where the leak is originating from. The vehicle leaks from the upper driver's side corner of the windshield, with the crack noted being on the lower mid section of the windshield. Water would not run up into the corner from where the adhesive leaks.

Negative 2018 Honda Pilot car reviews

This pilot is not worth the high cost. The automated car wash is not recommended, and the navigation system does not sync with Apple phones, nor does it provide voice directions with Google navigation. The armrests are uncomfortable, difficult to adjust, and cheaply made, which is unacceptable for a car that costs nearly fifty thousand dollars. The transmission is also subpar. A better option would be a midsize SUV from Toyota.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Honda vehicle. It's my fifth Honda and I've had it for 16 months now. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the windshield. It seems to break quite easily, and I've had to replace it three times already. I've started a claim with Honda and found a Facebook forum where others have had similar issues. I'm hoping that Honda will acknowledge and fix this issue soon. In the end, I decided to trade it in after getting four windshields. Thanks for listening!

Hello! As a retired driver in my 70s who often has my mother-in-law and/or grandchildren in the car, I was hoping that the Honda Pilot would be a great choice. However, I found that the 'trunk' space is too small to handle my mother-in-law's folded-up walker without partially collapsing a rear seat, and the seats are too narrow to fit two car seats and one regular passenger in a single row. It's not even that great if you try to put three adults in the middle. I guess I should have opted for a 10-seater so that I could have room for a walker and a stroller as well as the kids' paraphernalia. Thank you for listening to my experience with the Honda Pilot.

I used to love this car, but unfortunately, it has had some issues. The entertainment screen sometimes goes blank without warning, and the car has trouble starting on very cold mornings. Despite taking it to the dealership, they were unable to find a solution to these problems. Recently, I experienced a dangerous situation where the car started accelerating and decelerating out of control while on adaptive cruise. Although Honda was unable to replicate the issue, I am concerned for my safety and the safety of others. I have decided to sell the car before the warranty expires. I would not recommend buying a 2018 model.

I leased my '18 Pilot Touring because I wanted all the new safety measures my old '09 Honda Pilot Touring didn't. I really appreciate the new features that make me a much better driver. However, I have experienced some issues with the automatic transmission. In order to successfully accelerate from a stopped or slow roll, you have to push the A button along with the D (drive) button to keep from lunging forward, hesitating, then lunging forward again, especially on the hilly roads here in TN. Sometimes the A button drops off and you're left with the lunging/hesitation when you least expect it. I took it to my Honda dealer after driving for only about 200 miles because I thought it was a faulty transmission. The service tech explained that this was how the transmission worked, and Honda was getting a lot of complaints about this. Although I have had some issues with the transmission, the Pilot has had no other issues of any kind after having driven only 13k miles since 3/18. I would have more mileage but for the above-described issue. I hope this information helps others who may be considering a Honda Pilot.

Positive 2018 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Boyd Gleason 2024-11-21

We purchased the 6-speed auto EX model and the transmission has performed well. However, my wife and I have noticed some loud knocking/thumping noises, although we cannot reproduce them all the time. On the bright side, acceleration is good and the space is great! The third-row seat can actually be used by adults and with all the seats folded down, we were able to transport a treadmill home, thanks to the cavernous cargo space. Although we are not big fans of the touchscreen in the infotainment system and the lack of volume/power on/off button, Honda has fixed these issues in the year after we bought our SUV. We recommend purchasing all-weather/custom-fit rubber mats for all three rows, as the third-row seat does not come with a mat. Body roll is noticeable, so we suggest slowing down when coming off the highway. The blind spot camera on the right mirror works great and truly helps when passing lanes on the highway. However, we have noticed that metallic paint in Honda's seems to be on the thin side these days and scratches very easily. Overall, we are satisfied with the vehicle, but we have found reports and complaints on the Elites and Touring trims. If you are an Android user, your phone may not sync well with the infotainment system after a while, but my wife's Apple CarPlay works flawlessly. Lastly, if you want to avoid any transmission issues, we recommend going for a Toyota, as Asin makes transmissions for Toyota, and they are one of the best in the market. You can only use it via Bluetooth. An update from 2020: The SUV has been performing well, which is expected. It hasn't reached 9000 miles yet and it's almost 2 years old. There are no issues with Android Auto now. I guess the bugs worked themselves out. It was most likely a low-quality or worn USB cable causing the problem, but it's working well now. Just be careful with the paint as it still scratches easily. Everything else has held up well, especially since the Pilot is garage kept. I still highly recommend this vehicle for families of 5 or more. There is good shoulder room for the 3 passengers in the 2nd row. An update from 2021: The car has now covered over 22,000 miles in a year. I did a 4,600 mile trip from SE AZ all the way to MI's lower peninsula with 6 passengers on board and it performed admirably. Maintenance-wise, I have only done oil/filter changes and replenished fluids. The battery, tires, brakes, etc. are all still original and I'm very happy about that. The 18-inch wheels ride very smoothly in comparison to the 20-inch ones, and the tires are a lot more affordable. The extra thick sidewall came in handy on the horrendous pothole-infested roads of MI. I still highly recommend this family SUV. Let's see what comes out for the 4th gen Pilot in 2022. This one is looking a little outdated already after 7 years.

Just purchased our 2018 Honda Pilot EX-L. After only 519 miles, I have fallen head over heels for our new car. The fuel economy is at least equal or better than our 2013 Ford Escape Titanium. In terms of cargo, comfort and performance, the Pilot is a dream. I can't wait to take it on a long road trip.

  3. Jovani Fahey 2024-10-23

Our car has now covered over 40k miles and it still runs and drives as well as it did when it was new. Some of the other reviews on here are not as positive, but I believe this is because they have the higher trim models (Touring and Elite) that have the newer push button 9 speed transmission (which is not yet perfected) and the Honda sensing (which is also not yet perfected). In my opinion, they were not worth the extra cost for what you get, and the engine start-stop feature cannot be turned off permanently. I would not be surprised if complaints about having the starter replaced prematurely start to appear.

I got rid of the Honda. It was a noisy piece of junk. I bought a new Cadillac XT5. I wish I had started with it.

  5. Raul McLaughlin 2024-08-22

I want to start by saying that I have always been a fan of Honda cars. However, I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed with this particular vehicle. It doesn't handle as well as my previous cars, such as the Accord EX-L, Pilot, and Acura Integra. Additionally, the mileage is not the best, and it can be difficult for my young children to get in and out of the car. I would recommend getting running boards if you have little ones. My kids also complain about the temperature in the back seat, as it's hard to get it just right. Lastly, the windows seem to be malfunctioning, as they are sometimes slightly open when I return to my car, or they slip open when I open the car door. Overall, this experience may have turned me off Hondas for good.
