honda logo

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

There were at-least 10 vehicles behind me. I hit the accelerator pedal all the way until it touched frame but the engine is not at all responding and slowly losing power. The lane I was in was about to merge in to truck lane. I had to hit brakes with vehicles behind me but some how i managed to not get hit by them. It could have gone worse.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H33LB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: When driving down our street approximately 2 months ago, an error came up for an Emissions System Problem. Over the course of the next week, the car started showing several other error messages, and while driving the transmission felt jittery or like it would stutter while in 1st and 2nd gear. We brought the car to our local Honda dealership to have a recall fixed, and asked them about the issues while they had the car. They advised it was an issue with the fuel injectors but there was no recall for the 2020 Honda Pilot as of yet. I brought the car to an independent service center and they advised the same thing after running the codes and inspecting the vehicle. The vehicle is scheduled for the fuel injectors to be replaced later this week at the independent service center.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-12
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H39LB
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On August 12th, 2024, we were driving North on New Jersey Turnpike at 65mph surrounded by traffic when the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly stalled (no dashboard warning lights or system messages prior, nor any signs while driving prior). The surrounding cars were unaware of this mechanical failure and thus it created an extremely dangerous situation for all on the highway. Fortunately, I was able to navigate safely to the side of the highway without incident. Having towed it to the nearest Honda dealer, they diagnosed the root cause to be seized timing belt idler pulleys, causing the engine to lose timing and stall. This failure also resulted in damage to the cylinder heads, valves and associated components. While the dealer has repaired all of this damage under warranty, they have not adequately justified how or why these components failed extremely prematurely (4 year old vehicle with 35k miles). Additionally, Honda has not provided reimbursement for the resulting expenses incurred - hotel, rental car, towing, etc.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-29
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H99LB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: In a December 2023 I learned of a recall NHTSA Recall Number23V-858 for my vehicle. The recall states that the fuel pump could stop functioning, thus putting my car at a safety risk for crashing. Honda states that we will have to wait for the parts so this can be repaired. It is now a August 2024 and Honda still does not have the parts to repair this serious safety issue. 8 months later! I use my car daily and am very concerned about the possibility of a serious safety incident caused by Honda’s lack of appropriate replacement parts. This not only puts my life at risk, but others who are driving near me if I crash because of this defective part.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-26
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H50LB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I am experiencing recurring issues with my vehicle that closely mirror the problems described in complaints with NHTSA IDs 11565876, 11490438, and 11489885. In July 2023, while driving through an intersection after stopping at a traffic light, I heard a loud clunking noise. Over the next 45 minutes, I noticed at least six additional clunk sounds at low speeds. I took the vehicle to the dealership at 51,244 miles, where I was informed that the transmission fluid was both dark and low. The dealership inquired if I had used the vehicle for towing, despite there being no tow hitch assembly. They recommended a transmission flush service, but within 2 to 3 weeks, I began experiencing transmission juddering at constant speeds and harsh shifting during acceleration. Despite multiple visits to the dealership, where I was advised that the vehicle needed time to "re-learn" driving patterns and that nothing was wrong, the issues persisted. Although the problem seemed to lessen, it reoccurred in 2024. At 73,656 miles, I returned to the dealership, where I was informed that the transmission fluid was once again dark and that the torque converter needed replacement. Throughout the period before the 60K powertrain warranty expired, I was repeatedly told that there are known issues with the 6-speed transmissions and torque converters, but since no "error codes" were present, the dealership could not authorize a warranty repair. Now that the vehicle is out of warranty, I am being advised to replace the torque converter at my own expense.

When the brake pedal is release, the vehicle stalls out and Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) will flash. In-order to restart the vehicle, a sequence needs to be followed, put the vehicle in neutral, then park, then turn engage the start/stop ignition button. It is only when you follow this sequence will the car restart and you can engage the transmission. A recall was completed for the autostop issue, but since that repair, the above issues have increased in frequency and almost caused an accident in the middle of an intersection. The dealership says they have no clue as to the cause and need to scan the vehicle at a cost of $300 just to investigate.

Negative 2020 Honda Pilot car reviews

I researched all 3 row midsize SUVs and found that the Pilot met all the criteria on my list. It has a spacious interior, with more leg room in the 3rd row than some full size SUVs. Although I really like the new Highlander, the 2020 redesign lowered its height by 2 inches, making it look more like a tall station wagon. As an owner of a 2006 Pilot, I am aware of the potential issues these vehicles may have in the long run. However, I was hoping that over the past 14 years, Honda would have learned from the first generation Pilot and addressed the design problems. Unfortunately, they have not. For example, the engine still uses a timing belt, which requires a costly replacement every 7 years or 100k miles. Additionally, the VCM system that deactivates some cylinders to save fuel can cause oil consumption and spark plug fouling. It would be helpful if Honda provided an option for owners to deactivate this feature. The valves also require adjustment, which can be another expensive maintenance bill. Furthermore, the GDI technology in the engine can cause valve carbon buildup. However, my 2006 Pilot does not have this technology. If you plan to keep the car for less than 5 years or do not mind spending money on preventative maintenance, then this car may be suitable for you. Otherwise, it may be worth considering other options.

I was really looking forward to getting this car, as my family of six needed something bigger than my 2017 Honda Accord. However, since buying it brand new in 2020, I've experienced some electrical issues, particularly during the summer months. Sometimes my audio cuts out or my Garmin won't function, even mid-drive, and my backup camera won't work if it gets too hot. Additionally, the sensors for the car are very sensitive, with the front one flashing and trying to brake even on a two-lane road with oncoming traffic, and the reverse sensors being similarly sensitive. The middle area between the captain's chairs is quite narrow and doesn't offer much legroom. Despite these issues, I really appreciate how well this car has performed. It's taken hits from three toddlers and a sports-playing teenager, and we've driven it through mud and snow with ease. Overall, it's been a smooth ride and I'm happy with my purchase.

Although my experience with Honda has been disappointing, I believe that their quality standards can be improved. During the first 12 months of ownership, I encountered several issues such as transmission replacement, software updates, MOST network wiring issues causing speaker popping, poor fit of chrome trim around upper window frames, poor fitting front bumper, condensation in one head light, front brake rotors warped, airbag module rattle in steering wheel, and glitchy infotainment preset software. Additionally, I found Honda service quality to be mediocre at best. However, I am confident that Honda can improve their quality standards and I will consider them again in the future.

Hi there! Thank you for considering the Honda. We want to make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision. During our test drive, we found that the car handles well on smooth roads, but we did notice a clunking sound coming from the right rear suspension. Unfortunately, Honda has been unable to fix this issue and American Honda has stated that it is a normal characteristic. We just wanted to make sure you were aware of this before making your decision. Let us know if you have any questions!

I purchased the 2020 Honda Pilot Elite in November 2019. Unfortunately, I experienced crackling noises almost immediately. I took the vehicle in for a recall related to this issue, but it was returned to me with further issues. These included the infotainment system showing a network communication lost message and then the whole system shutting down completely. Additionally, when I make calls through the Hands Free Link, 90% of the time people can't hear me due to the static. Despite sending it back to the dealership service center three times, the issue has yet to be resolved. I received my vehicle back last Wednesday, and the following day the issue started again. I called Friday morning and was told that the service manager is out until Monday, so I will call back then. My insurance covers a loaner vehicle, but unfortunately, I'm having to drive a small metallic blue Honda Civic each time. It is frustrating what Honda Pilot owners are having to deal with. The service technicians attribute it wholly to Honda, saying that they are at the mercy of what Honda tells them to do, and unfortunately Honda can't figure it out with my vehicle and many other angry Pilot owners. Although I purchased a Honda thinking it was a sensible vehicle to drive, this situation has proven me wrong. I'm disappointed with my Honda purchase and I'm considering trading it in and going with another brand.

Positive 2020 Honda Pilot car reviews

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car so far! It sounds like it has a smooth ride, good acceleration, and is very comfortable and quiet. I noticed that you were considering getting another Odyssey, but ended up choosing a Pilot instead. I'm happy to hear that your wife found it easy to get in and out of, despite her previous concerns. The Pilot's size and roominess seem to be a great fit for you both. It's great to hear that you're getting good gas mileage and haven't had any issues with it after 4 years. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!

I absolutely love this car and all of its amazing options! If you're considering purchasing an Elite model, I highly recommend haggling for a better price. While the navigation and other options may seem a bit overpriced, you can easily use your phone's navigation and the built-in Apple Play instead. The entertainment system is a great addition, especially for kids who love the rear sunroof (even though it doesn't open for air). The amount of technology in this car is impressive, although it can be overwhelming at times, especially when backing up. However, the constant beeping and flashing alerts are a small price to pay for the added safety features. Speaking of safety, the mileage on this car is not quite what they advertise. I'm only getting about 12-13mpg for city driving, which is much lower than expected. Unfortunately, the Econ button doesn't seem to help much in the city, so I recommend turning it off. Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the amenities and style that this car offers!

I hope this helps everyone who is still considering purchasing a vehicle. As an engineer who has worked in the car industry since 2007, I have experience with various makes and models. In my youth, I worked as a lot tech for Honda and drove new and used vehicles. I have also worked for GM, Ford, Acura, and Toyota. Currently, I am back at Honda as an Inventory Specialist dealing with new and used cars. When it comes to family SUVs, I would only purchase a Honda or Toyota. PERIOD. My experience with the Highlander, which I will be comparing, has shown some transmission issues that are typically fixed under warranty. However, in some cases, the transmissions are replaced with rebuilt transmissions. The 9sp is newer for the Touring, which I am considering, although Honda partnered with ZF, who has been designing transmissions for decades, and is a very solid transmission. Shifting points are corrected by way of computer through Honda. This comes down to ride and tech. For the money, Toyota is just too expensive for the options that Honda gives you at the price point! Rear heated seats, navigation, rear-entertainment, and heated steering wheel are all available options! Since Honda holds its value pretty well, the residual is good on the lease. The 2020 Honda Pilot was simply the best choice!

  4. Bell Romaguera 2024-09-16

The SUV handles beautifully and the captain chairs are very comfortable. Overall, it looks great! The only thing that took some getting used to was the engine idle off when stopped, but it works well.

I recently traded in my 2019 Pilot LX for a 2020 EX-L. I was looking for more features than what I had in the LX and I must say, this 2020 model covers all I'll ever need. As a Honda person, I have owned quite a few vehicles, but this one is definitely one of my top favorites. The ride quality is excellent, the leather-stitched seats and finishes are of high quality, and the comfort is top-notch. The infotainment system is easy to use and responsive to the touch, and there is very little road noise. Honda products are known for their durability and reliability, and I can see why - you still see a lot of the 1st generations on the road. I absolutely love my new Honda and I highly recommend it!
