2016 Honda Pilot problems
The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.
The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.
Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.
The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-25
- VIN: 5FNYF5H86GB
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I was driving on the interstate last March of 2024. I have a Honda Pilot 2016. Im going 70 miles an hour or so and my engine just stalls and quits. So many alerts come up on my vehicle as well. Check engine lightTrailer Stability Assist Problem, Power Steering System EPS Problem, Trailer Stability Assist Problem, Hill Start Assist Problem, and others. I make it to the off ramp coasting this is a huge problem because I could have killed someone or someone could have killed me or provided Serious injury. I get it towed and I called the dealership and no recalls. I take it to my Mechanic and discover it was reading Code (P0087) The fuel pump not working at all. I had to replace it to drive the car. I am so livid as I see on the Honda Service Bulletin of a Safety Recall for 2016-2021 Pilot Fuel Pump Motor. This revision supersedes the previous recall of the Fuel Pump Motor from July 19th, 2024. I can see why their wasn't a recall when I checked. Cars from those years are now having this problem and should not be subject to certain VIN# on cars. I called Honda today 10-18-24 and was told this isn't covered.because my VIN wasn't in covered cars. How the heck does a VIN number cover or not cover you. Those years are what matter and my safety was at risk and could have proven fatal. Not warning was given it just happened as I going down the interstate 121 in Texas.Lucily I did not go over a high bridge which was another way to get home and one of the most dangerous interstates in the area I-25E. I could have flipped over the bridge and killed someone else going a descent speed. Im usually really careful on super high bridges cause they are scary. Getting stalled on that bridge is deadly. I'm really Upset over this and gave up my awesome Toyota 4Runner for a Honda Pilot and now this happens. I also stalled 3 to 4 other times after I turned on my hazards and restarted the car. it was 7pm and dark so it was quite scary my vehicle out of nowhere just quit on me.

Honda needs to expand their recall because more and more people are experiencing this issue. My pilot was manufactured in June of 2016 and Honda says the "recall" only runs up onto June 3rd. Sounds to me like the Pilot is eligible for the recall. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-02
- VIN: 5FNYF6H58GB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I recently had to have a short block engine replacement due to the known connecting rod bearing issue with 2016 and 2018-2019 Honda Pilots (service bulletin 24-001). I had to pay for the repairs in full since Honda Corporate said my vehicle is not yet part of the recall. I think it is obvious that my vehicle as well as numerous other vehicles [XXX] ) that experienced the exact same issue need to be included in this recall and reimbursed for our hefty expenses. Honda needs to be pushed to expand the VIN range that is included in this recall. It is no coincidence that we are all experiencing the same exact issue that is mentioned in the recall especially when Honda is known for manufacturing vehicles in a quality manner that usually do not exhibit this sort of major malfunction. Please have someone investigate this further as there are many of us that are having to spend quite a bit of money on repairs when it is pretty obvious that we should be included in this recall. Thanks for your time and consideration. [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 5FNYF6H08GB
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Rolled into a parking lot and the car suddenly stalled right before I could get into the spot - electriconics were still working and what not. Turned the car off and on and pulled in and then proceeded to charge my portable jumper just in case. Came back a few hours later and drove it home - all sorts of sensors were going off but the car was still fine. Once I got home, I swapped the battery with one that I was charging. At this point there was light flickering and more sensors failing. I went to replace with a new battery and it drove fine for a day or two. On the last day, my girlfriend said it started happening again, and she turned around and came back home where it stalled out again. We are terrified to drive this vehicle and purchased a different one out of fear. Please fix this issue, Honda, as it is pretty rampant from the other reports here.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-26
- VIN: 5FNYF5H91GB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The A/C in my 2016 Honda Pilot is blowing hot air. On my first visit to the dealer, dye was added to detect the leak at a cost of $422. Upon returning to the dealer a second time, the dealer replaced the A/C condenser at a cost of $1,075, which did not solve the problem. Upon returning to the dealer a third time, the A/C condenser was replaced again, and that also did not solve the problem. Upon returning to the dealer a fourth time, the dealer now recommends replacing the A/C evaporator at a cost of $2216. I believe these parts are defective, as Honda has already issued service bulletins extending the warranty to 10 years for the A/C Condenser in certain vehicles. This new warranty extension applies to the Accord, Accord Hybrid, Clarity, Civic Type-R, and Insight. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] According to the service bulletins "This warranty extension covers vehicles that have a defective A/C condenser from the factory. The A/C condenser was not manufactured to specification. As a result, corrosion may develop in the form of tiny holes in the condenser tube walls that allow the refrigerant to leak out." See (Warranty Extension: 2019–21 Insight A/C Condenser) I am requesting that the 2016 Honda Pilot be included in the warranty extension, as I am experiencing the same issues for the expensive repairs. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- VIN: 5FNYF6H94GB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: For the last few years the idle stop feature has resulted more than one dozen times of me being stuck at a stop light and not being able to get the car started. It will idle off and when I lift my foot off the break it will have trouble starting back up. If I wait a minute or so it can sometimes start back up but at least four times it has required a jump start to get it started again. It’s extremely stressful and scary to be at a light and stuck there with people honking and having to get out of the vehicle in a busy intersection to try to jump start the vehicle. I try to remember to turn off the feature every time I start the car but I forget sometimes. After the latest time being stuck with a toddler and trying to get someone to stop to jump start my car I am sending in a report.

I had it towed to an independent mechanic. The engine got locked & needed an engine replacement.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On 9-4-2024 my 2016 Honda Pilot was being driven on a city street when the engine stopped. The vehicle re-started and was driven to my residence. Messages had appeared on the dashboard. I scheduled an appointment with Courtesy Honda for the next day. On 9-5-2024 the vehicle started and I proceeded to drive it the 6 miles to Courtesy Honda. About halfway there the engine died. Multiple messages appeared on the dashboard. My wife had been following me in her car when the Pilot died. She helped me by steering the Pilot as I pushed it off the busy street manually to a side road. It was a hazardous situation. The Pilot would not start . I called a towing service to tow it to the dealership. At Courtesy Honda a service technician examined the vehicle and diagnosed the problem as “ high pressure fuel pump failure and low pressure fuel pump failure.” He recommended replacement. I approved the repair. It was completed for a total of $1754.46. I researched Recalls Of Honda Pilots For Fuel Pump Failure. I found there was a massive recall of thousands of Honda Pilots from 2016 and beyond. Letters were sent from Honda to owners authorizing replacement of fuel pumps. My VIN number was not included in the recall. It should have been.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

- Summary: - The idle engine function does not work. I turn it off in general because if it is on, when I stop the car dies and the dashboard and electric functions, malfunction. They turn on and off and I cannot automatically start the car; it takes several times for the car to restart. - Today, I went to a pharmacy and when I tried to restart my car to leave, it would not begin. The dashboard went on and off and it took 1 minute for it to restart properly. - My teenage son is now a driver but I will not let him drive the car because it will stall. We drive to school everyday 45-60 minutes there and back; we are in the car a lot. - When I went to the dealer 1 year ago, they were going to charge me $200 for a diagnostic and then $2000 to fix the problem. I told them if I turn the function off, I have no problem. They suggested I do this. They offered no other solution. - Now, however even when the function if off, the engine is now stalling. - A few years ago, it stalled at a light on an incredibly hot day so I attributed it to the heat.

I then hooked up a jumper and the vehicle instantly started smoking from under the motor. Within 20 seconds, fire had started under the hood and it caused extreme damage to my home. The car was also destroyed. There seemed to be some sort of electrical system issue. I was able to get my 1 year old daughter safely away and nobody was hurt. However, this caused extreme losses. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- VIN: 5FNYF6H8XGB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Our 2016 Honda Pilot stopped working at a busy intersection stoplight due to engine failure. Thank God no one plowed into the vehicle. If it was on the highway it could have been catastrophic. We had it towed to our local Honda dealer. They told us it would be $1000k in a diagnostic fee to take apart the engine to determine what was wrong. It was a connecting Rod bearing failure. There is a recall dated March 8th, 2024 for our 2016 Honda Pilot except our VIN number isn't included in the recall. It states "may have engines containing internal damage at the connecting rod bearings, possibly leading to engine failure." Our Honda dealer confirmed that this is what happened to our engine. On the [XXX] " website I found many others have had the same problem. They paid $8000 or $9000 to replace the engine. There is talk of a class action lawsuit on this thread. We were quoted $15000 to replace our engine by the dealer. Honda headquarters says they will pay 20 percent of the cost. This means we would owe 11,000 for a new engine on a vehicle priced out to be valued at around $15,000 on KBB.com. We should have a working SUV that is worth 15,000, but unless we pay 11,000 it is now worthless. Honda Motor Corporation must do the right thing and expand the recall to all of the vehicles affected. I filed a case complaint with Honda Motor Corp. but they said someone in the engineering dept would review it, but he has no idea when. We have 3 drivers in our house and now are down to one SUV because our Honda Pilot has no engine. The damages are many: My teenage son was driving and could have been killed when the engine stopped working. The dealer is asking us to pay 11,000 in repairs for a known manufacturing defect covered by a recall. We don't have 11,000 to pay for a new engine. We should have 15000 of value left in our Honda Pilot, but without an engine it is now worthless. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-21
- VIN: 5FNYF6H84GB
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Car started displaying "Keyless start system problem". I changed both batteries in the key fobs, but it continued. After about 2 weeks of this, the car would not start. Just clicking and flickering of lights and gauges. Would not jump off or anything, so I had to tow it home. After researching it and checking the brake light switch to make sure it was still operational, and after purchasing and installing a new start/stop button, I decided to get a new battery. I took the old battery in and they said it was good, but I still got another one and installed it. The car started up and has been working for about 4 weeks, but now the same message is popping up again. I am worried that my wife will drive it somewhere and get stranded. I have seen that there are recalls on this on some of the Honda sites, but can't find it anywhere else. This needs to be addressed as it seems like a lot of people are reporting the same issue.

If you're looking for a spacious and family-friendly SUV that is comfortable to travel in, handles well, and looks great, then your search ends here. However, if you're someone who values electronics in a car, then I must tell you that the electronics package in this SUV is not up to the mark. The designers seem to have prioritized concept over usefulness, which has resulted in a package that is distracting for the driver and can be dangerous on the road. The display is large and gorgeous, but it takes a few extra seconds to find anything, which can take your eyes off the road for 2-3-4 seconds, leading to accidents. There is too much information crammed into one place. It is beyond bad decision-making that the geniuses put Apple Carplay in their cheaper vehicles but not in the high-end Pilot. I must say that I love this car (IT'S A GREAT VEHICLE). I have owned it for nearly a year, and it replaced my recent model LEXUS RX, which was smaller, got worse mileage, had no 3rd row seats, and cost about $12k more. Everything about this SUV is GOOD NEWS, except for the poorly designed entertainment center, which is distracting.

The Honda Pilot is a car that my whole family loves. After being hit by an inattentive driver and rolling my car two times, I had to replace my 2016 Pilot. However, I was able to walk away from the accident, which reinforced my belief in the car's safety. Therefore, I immediately bought another one after receiving the insurance payout.

I completely understand where some people are coming from with their negative reviews of the 9 speed transmission, and I almost settled for the EX-L as a result. However, after doing my own investigation, I am happy to report that I ignored those folks and I'm glad I did. The 9 speed is different and takes some getting used to, but it is very smooth. The sport mode is fantastic for movement down steep mountain grades and combines nicely with the new suspension that allows for sharp cornering without feeling top heavy. In fact, it actually corners better than many of the cars I have owned. On the highway, the 9 speed transmission is as smooth as butter and really delivers an awesome ride. In town, the 9 speed transmission performs well too. When I drove the car home from the dealer, I did notice a difference during the stopping, slowing down process. What I concluded is that the sound of the transmission differs from the normal 6 speed in that it does an audible

The vehicle drives great (in fact it does a lot of the effort for you). The quality is very good. Overall, I love the vehicle. However, they still have some bugs to work out with the technology. I think they just need some better programmers.

The touch screen could use some improvement. It might be more convenient to have a dial to change channels. The rear climate control can be a bit finicky at times, occasionally blowing hot air when the front is blowing cool air. It's important to be careful when putting items in the back of the pilot to avoid scratching the paint. Overall, I really like it, but I do have a couple of concerns. I've noticed that it's a lot quieter than my previous pilot and it rides really well.

I recently purchased a 2016 Pilot Touring after experiencing some electrical problems with my previous 2014 Pilot Touring. Unfortunately, I encountered some issues with my new vehicle after only 33 days of ownership. While backing out of my garage, I noticed a large puddle of fluid and drops leading out of the garage. I immediately took the vehicle to the dealer the next day. Although it was a scary experience, the dealer was able to diagnose the issue as a transmission problem and informed me that they would need to order a part to fix it. Despite the inconvenience, the dealer was able to fix the car within 3-4 days. While I did have some concerns about the vehicle, the dealer was able to offer me a fair price for it and I was able to move on from the experience. Although it was a difficult lesson to learn, I am now excited to start the car shopping process again and find a vehicle that better suits my needs. Thank you Honda for your continued commitment to quality and customer service.

I had a scary experience with my car's braking system. The car suddenly thrust out into traffic when I was stopping at the end of my street, and other drivers had to swerve to avoid a collision. I have since read other reports of similar issues, such as sudden acceleration even when the brakes are applied, and sudden deceleration with steady accelerator pressure at slower speeds. I have been increasingly concerned about these issues over the past 3 months of owning the car, and after today's incident, I have decided that the car needs to be returned. It simply isn't safe.

We recently upgraded from our 2011 Honda Pilot to the top of the line model. Although the interior and amenities are impressive, we have had some issues with the transmission. Two months after purchasing the car, we noticed a whining sound while accelerating. It took some persistence, but we were able to get it fixed with a new wiring harness. Unfortunately, we later experienced transmission problems, similar to what other reviewers have reported. The transmission was glitchy, lurching, and missing gears, especially when climbing hills. We also noticed a belt squeaking noise and the engine overheating while idling. We took it back to Honda Service and discovered that transmission fluid had gotten into the radiator, and the entire transmission needed to be replaced. We were disappointed to learn that another Elite owner had recently experienced the same issue. After researching the 9-speed transmission, we found that it is not very reliable. We are extremely disappointed with Honda's decision to use this transmission in their most expensive vehicle. We have contacted American Honda to open a case and hope to trade in our car for a Pilot EX-L with the tried and true 6-speed transmission. We are grateful that we were able to get out of this car and into an Acura RDX, which we love. This is what a car should do when you bring it home :)

I bought my 2016 Honda Pilot in September 2015 and initially didn't notice any issues with the transmission or temperature. However, over the months, these issues have steadily increased. I have brought it in for servicing twice now, but unfortunately, the support from Honda regarding their transmission issues has been disappointing. When driving uphill or on the interstate, my Pilot does not accelerate properly, and I have to push hard on the pedal for it to accelerate. The shifting is also at incorrect times, causing me major issues. I am also having issues with my Pilot not warming up properly on cooler days, and the heated seats are not working as expected. I have another appointment scheduled next week to have my cruise control fixed since that has now stopped working as well. If all of my issues cannot be resolved, I plan to turn in my Pilot next month. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I purchased a brand new 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L which I owned for 8 months before trading it in. The SUV was very comfortable and perfect for a growing or large family. However, I had to trade it in as it was emitting a gas/oil odor through its front vents. Despite taking it to the dealer several times for diagnostic and repairs, they were unable to replicate the issue and therefore could not resolve the problem. Honda stated they would no longer look at my vehicle given the inability to replicate the issue and suggested I go through arbitration if I was still unsatisfied. Unfortunately, I went through the arbitration process and lost badly given Honda's experience in dealing with these matters. Honda later changed its position regarding the issue, stating it was a common issue and the car should be emitting such fumes - noting this was not a defect, but normal. I was disappointed with my ownership experience and realized that companies prioritize their bottom line over their customers. Additionally, the radio on the Pilot was not great and the touch screen did not have a volume button, which became pretty annoying over time.
