2003 Honda Pilot problems
The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.
The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.
Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.
The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common 2003 Honda Pilot problems
Based on the information gathered from the sources provided, here is a list of common problems with the Honda Pilot 2003 model based on complaints from owners:
- Transmission Failures: The 2003 Honda Pilot is known for transmission failure issues, which can be a serious and expensive problem. Symptoms include issues with acceleration, poor or low idle, and stalling when trying to accelerate. This problem can lead to difficulties in controlling the vehicle and potential safety hazards.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Another common problem reported by owners is excessive oil consumption, especially after reaching high mileage. Low oil levels can lead to engine damage, overheating, and increased maintenance costs. Regularly monitoring oil levels and topping them off can help manage this issue.
- Peeling Paint: While primarily a cosmetic problem, peeling paint on the Honda Pilot can become more severe in wet or rust-prone areas. Although not a critical issue, it may require repainting to maintain the vehicle's appearance and prevent further damage.
- Recurring Fault Codes: Owners have reported recurring fault codes in the Honda Pilot, which can be more of an annoyance than a safety concern. However, ignoring legitimate fault codes due to frequent false alarms can lead to unintentional damage to the vehicle. Promptly addressing and resolving fault codes is essential to prevent potential issues.
- Fuel Injector Failure: Fuel injector failures are another common issue with the Honda Pilot, which can be costly to repair. Proper maintenance and regular inspections can help detect and address fuel injector problems early to prevent further damage to the vehicle.
These common problems with the Honda Pilot 2003 model highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and awareness of potential issues to ensure the longevity and performance of the vehicle.
What are the problems with the 2003 Honda Pilot?
For the 1st gen pilot, the biggest problems were the rear subframe channel. They tend to rot out throughout the winters. If you think about buying one, that would be the first thing to check. The VTM-4 system has never failed me in the harsh Wisconsin snow.
How many miles can a 2003 Honda Pilot last?
Honda Pilot Life Expectancy Factors
The Honda Pilot's life expectancy is upwards of 200,000 miles if properly cared for by Lexington drivers. However, there are many factors that can affect how long a Honda Pilot lasts, from climate to regular maintenance.
Is a 2003 Honda Pilot good on gas?
Mileage is a little better than the competition's but still typical of mid-size SUVs – which is to say you'll make no friends with your Project Green friends if you buy a Pilot; 22 miles per gallon is about the best you'll get, by EPA estimate.
What year Honda Pilot has transmission problems?
Several Honda Pilot transmission problems have appeared in multiple years. Specifically, we noticed the worst transmission errors in the 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2019 versions of the Honda Pilot. Watch for these flaws if you own any of these years.

Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are JU4, JU5, JU6, and JU7. Note: Vehicles that have already received a replacement passenger air bag inflator as part of the recall remedy for an earlier campaign such as 14V353 or 14V700 (Honda recall numbers S95, JH6, JH7, JH8, JH9, JJ0, JJ1, JJ2, JJ6, JM5 and JM6) are not included in this recall. However, this recall does supersede 13V132 and 14V349. Note: On December 18, 2015 Honda informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2004 Honda CR-V vehicles in addition to additional model year 2003 CR-V vehicles.

- Summary: ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE.
- Consequence: GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. - Consequence: IF THE TIMING BELT BREAKS, THE ENGINE WILL STALL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE WATER PUMP AND IF IT IS ONE OF THE DEFECTIVE PUMPS, THE WATER PUMP AND TIMING BELT WILL BE REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 30, 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.

The Honda Pilot is an excellent vehicle, especially in snowy conditions. In my experience, it has outperformed any SUV I have ever owned, and I have never gotten stuck in the snow here in Michigan. The leather seating is comfortable, and the heating and cooling systems work superbly. In the five years that I have owned it, I have had minimal problems, and I still love driving this thing! However, there are a few issues to note. The power door lock actuator on the driver's door is broken, which is a common problem. The VTM sensor light may pop on, and the oil temp sensor on the differential is often faulty. The transmission light may also pop on, but this is usually a common problem that does not require a transmission replacement. After a couple of months, the light eventually stops popping up on its own. Additionally, the second-row seats may eventually not fold down flat, which is also a common issue. Overall, my Pilot has 193,000 miles, and the body has only a quarter-sized rust spot on the passenger side lower rear wheel area. It doesn't leak a drop of any fluid anywhere, and all electronics work as they should. The steering is tight, as if it were new. I am ready to replace it only because it's starting to rust, so I am hoping to find another one from 2003 to 2005 with low miles and from the south so I can start all over again.

This is a fantastic SUV. It has plenty of power, space, and comfort. It can haul everything we need, both inside and by trailer. It is very reliable, and the build quality is obvious.

This is a tank. But when my daughter moved to an area with snowy and rainy weather, I sent her in this SUV after driving it cross country fully loaded with her belongings. I have complete trust in it. It has had regular repairs and airbags replaced. It may not be the most beautiful SUV, but it is my go-to for any event, whether fully loaded or just for one person. It's steady, ready, and willing to go.

I'm so glad to hear that your 2003 Pilot has been such a reliable vehicle for you! It's great that you've been so diligent about keeping up with oil changes and using higher octane gas. Even with 230,000 miles on it, it's impressive that you've only had to repair common issues like rusted struts and brake and exhaust mounts. It's a testament to the toughness of the vehicle that it's been able to withstand harsh winter conditions and still start up every time. I can understand why you're so attached to it, especially with how comfortable it is for both you and your passengers. It's always tough to say goodbye to a beloved car, but I'm sure you'll know when the time is right to downsize. Thanks for sharing your story with me!

After driving a mini-van for 11 years, we were really excited to try something different. This SUV has been an amazing kid-hauler and traveler. The kids absolutely love the DVD system, which means no more hearing 'are we there yet?' We've been really impressed with the climate control system, especially since the other passengers have the ability to control the temperature. Additionally, we've been blown away by all the storage and the sound system - both are of great quality. The only issue we've had is with the noise when only the back window is down. However, we were told by Honda that this is common in SUVs. If you crack the front window, the road noise disappears. Overall, we highly recommend this SUV!

I also have a 2003 Honda Pilot. We have kept up on all maintenance on this vehicle. Recently, the drive light started flashing and we were told that the 4th gear pressure sensor was bad. We had that fixed, but unfortunately, a month later the transmission started acting up. We took it to the dealer and they informed us that we needed a whole new transmission, which was going to cost us $3000.00 to fix.

Most everything is OK with the Pilot, except for the transmission. If you're considering buying a Pilot, it's important to keep in mind that the power train warranty has an expiration date. I would recommend trading in the Pilot before that date arrives to avoid a costly $2500 repair. While there was a transmission recall for the Pilot, the fix wasn't very effective. Additionally, the radio and CD player are of poor quality and may need to be replaced.
Connor Wilkinson 2024-07-04
The torque converter and transmission were replaced at 89k miles under normal driving conditions, with a total cost of over $3600. It is important to note that Honda repairs can be costly due to the high quality of their parts.

My 2003 Pilot EX-L with RES has 79,000 miles and has unfortunately experienced some issues. The A/C, door locks, leather quality, driver's side visor mirror cover, plastic on the bottom side of the driver's side, and one of the rear A/C vents have all required attention. Additionally, there is some rust in the middle of the passenger's side door. While these issues are frustrating, they are not uncommon and can be addressed. I have researched these problems and found that they are not unique to my vehicle. I am confident that Honda will work with me to resolve these issues and restore my vehicle to its former quality. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Great family vehicle. Comfortable ride and handling (after replacing OEM tires). Good ergonomics for a big man.
