honda logo

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

This is an issue in the humid southeast. Visibility issues persist every night when attempting to drive. Honda rejected a goodwill claim for repair stating that my car at 44,000 miles is outside their 36,000 mile warranty for A/C and that we have not been with one dealership for enough service history. The car has been exclusively serviced at honda dealerships, but we are a military family, thus unable to stay in one location for service due to military orders. Without a front windshield defog system, the car is unsafe to drive due to poor visibility.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-13
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H99KB

  • Summary: 3 episodes of unexpected and sudden braking for no reason. Twice on Sept 13 when ACC was in use and set at 70 mph the car hard-braked and dropped to 40-42mph rapidly, then it stopped braking and I was able to use the accelerator again- the braking lasted perhaps 10-15 seconds. The third episode was on Oct. 13 and the ACC was not on. I was driving manually at 55 mph and again the car suddenly braked and dropped to the same 40-42 range- maybe 5-10 seconds before the accelerator started to work again. There was no reason for the barking, no warning notices on the dashboard. Thank goodness there was no-one close behind me on any of these occasions, because the drop in speed was fast and hard.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H63KB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: My 2019 Honda Pilot Touring was included in the Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2018-2023 Multi-Model MOST Communication Error. In May 2024, Schomp Honda dealership attempted to fix the recall. In September 2024 my Honda Pilot began experiencing audio and display issues. The display would cut out while driving and I would hear static through the speakers. On September 24, 2024 I took a short drive and the backup camera worked when I reversed out of my garage, but 12 mins later when trying to park, my backup camera video would not display. It stays on a black screen with "Camera System Failure" when in reverse, I tried parking the vehicle, turning the engine off and back on. While I waited for my service appointment at the Schomp Honda Dealership (the same dealership who performed the attempted recall fix) on Oct 2, 2024 the video from the backup camera would intermittently display (approximately 10% of the time I would see video when in reverse). The other 90% of the time, the display shows a black, sometimes flickering green image. I believe the Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2018-2023 Multi-Model MOST Communication Error was not fixed by the service technicians at Schomp Honda Dealership for my 2019 Honda Pilot Touring. I am experiencing the exact issues with 23-047, Safety Recall: 2019-23 Passport/Pilot Install FAKRA Service Cables at MOST Bus Network was supposed to fix. An improperly functioning rearview camera impairs my rearward visibility, potentially increasing the risk of a back-up collision or injury. I cannot see children or people that are shorter than my rear window.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H51KB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Honda issued a recall on 12/18/2023 for the fuel pump that it acknowledges could cause the car to fail while driving, 23V-858. Over nine months later, parts are still not available to address this recall. That seems to exceed a reasonable timeframe to allow drivers to continue to drive cars that could critically malfunction.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H05KB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Honda is to replace the fuel pump with a new one due to a recall. I have received my notice to go get one more than 6 weeks ago and they never have any in stock and will not provide me any info on when they will be available. Just that they get them randomly and that there is nothing they can do for me and they refuse to contact me when they got one and told me its like a lottery, if you can and we have one then you are lucky and we will replace.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H05KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My vehicle several times has jumped forward when I remote start the vehicle. My car is always put into park gear and the emergency brake applied when parking the vehicle. At the same time the engine starts there is a lurch forward. Dealership does not "know of any issues" at this time.
2024-09-23

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H05KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Back up camera just suddenly started showing a wide range of colors. It looks almost like a thermal camera. I am unable to see behind me when I back up. There was no warning of this and it was not a slowly changing issue, the camera worked one day and then the next time this happened. There are many complaints about this online from other owners. The new camera prices are outrageous.
2024-09-21

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H99KB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Screen on backup camera is not clear. It now has purple and green coloring and is impeding the picture on the screen. The dealership thinks it is due to the wiring with the backup camera. When backing up I cannot clearly see if any objects are behind me. This is happening each time I reverse. There were no warning sign that I noticed. I did, however, have problems with the current recall with wiring and the audio almost immediately after buying the new car. Took it into the delearship on many occasions to have fixed, prior to recall. I’ve ready many similar issues happening after the recall is fixed.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H67KB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: My car has shifted from both park to neutral and drive to neutral on its own three times in the last six weeks. This has occurred when parked and when at a red light. My gear shifters are electric push buttons. This has previously occurred, been reported to NHTSA, and been checked by the dealership. I was told by the dealership that it was a battery issue and paid to replace my three and a half year old battery that tested in good condition. My new battery is about a year old and I am now having the same, very serious issues. This specific model has been recalled multiple times for continuous electrical issues. I called the dealership after the first new incident and was told if they cannot repeat it, they cannot fix it. It is not occurring everyday or seemingly with any pattern so I cannot replicate it for the dealership. In the most recent incident that occurred at the red light, my car stalled and would not shift out of neutral. I had to turn off the car and restart it twice before I could shift into drive and avoid being hit. This also occurred in previous incidences that took place at red lights.
2024-09-19

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF6H02KB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 2019 Honda Pilot rear camera became inoperable and the word “camera failure” appears on a black screen in the front of the vehicle. This is a big safety issue as now what is behind the vehicle cannot be seen such as children or other adults. The dealership believes it is the actual camera that has failed and like I said previously the screen says “camera failure” on it where previously the rear camera image would be.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-29
  • VIN: 5FNYF5H56KB
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: i was notified of a vehicle recall related to a fuel pump issue. when i contacted my local Honda dealer 9 months ago, i was told that i was on a list for repair and would be notified when parts were available. i called today and was informed there is no such list. since my fuel pump went out, i was stranded and forced to replace with an after market fuel pump. All Star Honda in Abilene Tx told me today that they would not be servicing the recall any more because it was replaced with a non OEM part. this does not seem right to me. how can you issue a recall, not correct it, expect the customer to correct it, and then still not honor the recall when parts become available. what they said is that Honda Corporate determines how many parts will be sent to dealerships and they have no control over when they will get them. it seems as if honda does not care if the recalls are repaired or not.

  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport, and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles. Additionally, it can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
  • Consequence: Operating a vehicle without a functioning instrument panel or rearview camera display increases the risk of a crash.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
  • Consequence: A delayed or inoperative rearview camera display can reduce the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

  • Consequence: In the event of a crash, incomplete body welding may provide inadequate protection to occupants, increasing the risk of an injury.

The days of the Honda with 200k miles are gone. Although this is a comfortable vehicle, I have noticed a few issues within the first month of owning it. I am considering either trading it in before 36k miles or buying an extended warranty. Within the first 1000 miles, I noticed some problems with the radar, rear entertainment system, and idle stop. I also advise any new buyer to thoroughly inspect the body panels for placement. Despite these issues, I still love driving it and find it to be leaps and bounds better than the Volkswagen Atlas. However, I do believe that the initial quality of a $45k Honda should be better.

Hey there! Just a quick tip for you - if you're driving this car or any other similar ones in snowy conditions and you don't have access to a heated garage overnight, it might not start in the morning. But don't worry, it's an easy fix! You just need to have it hauled (not towed) to a dealer so it can thaw out. After that, it'll run just fine until the next time you want to start it outside. We absolutely love this SUV, except for this minor inconvenience. Thanks for reading!

I recently purchased a Honda Pilot Elite 2019, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with it. The speedometer and dash console have been shutting off mid-drive, the audio has been popping and crackling, and the infotainment screen has been shutting off randomly. Despite taking it to the dealership five times for over 45 days, the issues have not been resolved yet. I am currently in the process of filing a lawsuit to get Honda to take responsibility for the issues. Although this experience has been frustrating, I hope that Honda will work to resolve these issues and improve their vehicles in the future.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with our 2019 Honda Pilot. Unfortunately, we had an issue with the front windshield making a popping sound from the tweeter just two weeks after purchasing it. We took it to the dealership four times for repairs, which was frustrating. However, I'm hopeful that we can get this resolved soon. Thanks for listening!

Congratulations on your 5th new Honda purchase! It's great to hear that you've been pleased with all of them. It's been a year since you've owned this Elite and it's impressive that it has handled so well with 9,500 miles on it. The 9 speed transmission is very smooth and easy to master with the push button drive. The automatic engine cylinder deactivation is a great feature that has given you up to 33mpg on several occasions. The SUV is very roomy and the ratchet arm rests on the front seats are a nice touch. The build quality is excellent with no rattles or wind noise. The infotainment system works well, although it may take some time to master. The acceleration is decent enough to move it into freeway traffic or passing on the old two lane roads. Overall, it's hard to find fault with this SUV. If we had to gripe about anything, it would be the engine start/stop feature which we disable every time we get into the car. We would also like the ride to be just a bit softer, as due to the 20 inch wheels it will give a bit harder ride on choppy pavement. We appreciate your honest feedback on the other SUVs you've driven and we're glad that the Honda Elite fits your bill 100%. We encourage everyone to test drive one and develop their own conclusion. Thank you for choosing Honda!

This is my third Pilot (2003, 2015, 2019). I have had good results with the '03 and '15, but this Pilot is by far the best. The handling is great, and all safety features work as advertised. The passenger compartment and cargo space are the perfect size for a mid-size SUV. Recently, I took a three-hour trip and covered 350 miles, and I averaged 28.5 MPG. I have had the car for two months and have driven 1000 miles. Based on my experience with previous Pilots, I expect the same performance in the coming years. The styling is also a high point for this car, as it stands out greatly among other SUVs.

  3. Madison Grady 2024-09-13

Make sure to take the car for a test drive, as the push button controlled transmission may take some time to get used to.

  4. Price Willms 2024-08-29

I recently traded in my 2018 CRV for a 2019 Honda Pilot Touring and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. The car is noticeably quieter than my previous vehicle, which is great for listening to music or watching movies in the back seat. The ride is smooth and comfortable, perfect for family trips. Although the car is not as sporty as some other models, it is not meant to be driven like a sedan or sports car. One thing to note is that the suspension is soft, so the car may rock side to side more easily when hitting speed bumps. Additionally, the car is quite heavy, so it requires more distance to come to a complete stop compared to my CRV. The 9-speed transmission can be a bit finicky when driving between 25-30 mph, but otherwise, the shifting is smooth. I did experience one instance of the infotainment system freezing up, but it has not happened again since. My favorite feature of this car is the torque vectoring, which makes taking corners feel like a breeze. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone in the market for a family-friendly vehicle.

  5. Broderick Cremin 2024-08-29

I've owned a Pilot EX-L, Touring, and now the 2019 Elite. What a difference! The interior noise has been reduced just as I had hoped, and the ride and handling are absolutely wonderful. The sound system is a significant upgrade, as are all the new detailing that has been added. I would highly recommend this car and trim to anyone who wants the top-of-the-line because you truly get your money's worth.
