2013 Honda Pilot problems
The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.
The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.
Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.
The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common 2013 Honda Pilot problems
The 2013 Honda Pilot has been reported to have some common problems, primarily related to chipping paint, worn-out spark plugs, and Bluetooth connectivity issues.
Chipping paint is a widespread complaint from owners in the first 70,000 miles. The front bumper, hood, and roof all chip easily as they are exposed to various weather conditions and road debris. This issue is primarily cosmetic but can lead to more severe problems if not addressed, especially in regions with wet weather or where rust is consistent.
Worn-out spark plugs are another common problem, which can affect the engine's performance and fuel efficiency. It is recommended to replace the spark plugs every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to maintain optimal engine performance. However, some owners have reported issues with spark plugs wearing out prematurely, which may require more frequent replacements.
Bluetooth connectivity issues have also been reported by some 2013 Honda Pilot owners. These problems can affect the functionality of the infotainment system, making it difficult to connect smartphones and music players to the vehicle. While these issues are not as serious as transmission failures or excessive oil consumption, they can be frustrating for owners who rely on their vehicle's technology features.
Overall, the 2013 Honda Pilot's common problems are relatively minor compared to other midsize SUVs from 2013, and repair costs are average as well. However, it is essential to address these issues promptly to maintain the vehicle's performance, safety, and longevity.

The Honda Pilot's life expectancy is upwards of 200,000 miles if properly cared for by Lexington drivers. However, there are many factors that can affect how long a Honda Pilot lasts, from climate to regular maintenance.
What years of Honda Pilot are the best?
Honda Pilots built between 2006 and 2008, as well as 2017 to 2021 models, have considerably fewer reported complaints than other model years. This is despite the investigation into engine stop-start system failures in the later model years and a recall involving the hood latch on 2016 to 2019 Pilots.
What year Honda Pilot has bad transmission?
The biggest Honda Pilot transmission problems appeared in the 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2019 versions of the Honda Pilot. The rest of the models provide much better in this category.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-10
- VIN: 5FNYF4H92DB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Having a VCM system problem on vehicle, tighten gas cap, check engine light, vtm-4 light, misfire in 3. Took to Buerkle Buick after reading about class action lawsuit. They were absolutely no help. Said without a code could not help. Bought new gas cap and replaced purge valve, changed oil. Good for a bit then car went into limp mode. Took to a local mechanic, he adjusted valves, ran great but would not come out of limp mode. Replaced VCM Solenoid, still in limp mode. It is sad that this is a known problem but because they settled they don't have to recall these vehicle in the mean time we all get screwed.

- Summary: While on the highway with our family of 5 all the check engine light, VCM-4 along with traction control light came on. The car began to slow down and would not accelerate when the gas pedal was pushed. The Vehicle has been towed to Honda who apparently knew that this happens in this year, make and model vehicle because they had offered an extended warranty coverage on this issue which has since expired and no longer covered for us. Why wasn't this a recall? This is a major engine issue that costs thousands of dollars to fix.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-02
- VIN: 5FNYF3H54DB
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I am writing this complaint since Honda has so many issues with their vehicles and it has boiled down to my 2013 Honda Pilot which has an engine check light issue related to P0301 – Bank 1 Piston Ring Issue. There was a class action suit on the same and noted in their Service Bulletin 13-082. However, the attorneys of both parties Honda and the plaintiffs reached some kind of deal even with the National highway safety board (Federal Agency) and many vehicles of 2013 were left out of the extension of warranty or repair of this issue, even though a Certified Dealer of Honda checked my 2013 Honda and confirmed it was the same issue. The deal done by these parties have not reached many owners of Honda Pilots for this issue. This is a disgrace to Honda and would encourage all car owner’s past, present and future to buy other cars other than those made by Honda. They have not yet resolved my issue even after all these months of trying. Even lawyers involved these in past cases have refused to help or talk on the matter. What are they hiding or what deals made w Honda, plaintiff, and the Highway Safety Board? I am an original believer of buying Toyotas, however I got a recommendation from family members and friends to get the Honda pilot who have similar vehicles of both Hondas and Toyotas, even though I was very reluctant to buy a Honda due to the horrific stories I have heard about Honda vehicles and experience w Honda personnel. So, I got a Honda pilot 2013 and my terrible recent experience w the car issues and the customer service a Honda corporate proved the terrible stories I had heard to come true. I had contacted Honda to resolve my issue on case which was due to a Honda know issue on the Piston ring issue also confirmed by the Honda Mall of GA Dealership on 11/2/22. The behavior of the case manager, Mr. Kantar Kennedy was atrocious and disgusting. They have closed the case 3 times. Not Resolved. NHTB and Honda are not resolving this issue.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-13
- VIN: 5FNYF3H50DB
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: During my commute home from work my vehicle began shaking as if it was going to stall. The orange check engine light began to flash. I used my scanner and it read the code P0303. I took it to a mechanic the following day and they stated the engine is burning excessive oil and misfiring due to Honda’s Variable Cylinder Management system. The oil is soaking the rear three spark plugs from continuously turning on/off while driving causing the engine cylinders to misfire. They stated it is not safe to drive due to possible shut off, power loss, acceleration loss, and damage to the other car systems. I have regular maintenance done to the vehicle but due to the VCM system it will continue to have the same issues. I paid a lot of money for a “reliable” car but the mechanic is saying I need a new motor.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-07
- VIN: 5FNYF4H59DB
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Since purchasing new in 2013, experienced ongoing issues with VCM. Noticable vibration/shudder at all speeds except during heavy acceleration. Taken to dealer mant times. They are able to reproduce but state no fix available. It's how the car was made. In addition to vibration, engine makes a chirping noise when accelerating through vibration. I believe they are related although neither have been able to be fixed. No warning lights illuminate. I purchased this car for the 4wd as I live in snow/ice climate. However, excessive vibration/shudder makes driving in these conditions (any conditions) unsafe due to constant need to fluctuate acceleration/ deceleration to help minimize vibration/shudder to regain sense of control. If you maintain speed while vibrating on snow/ice you feel like you are losing control. This vibration HAS to have a long-term effect on engine/car integrity. It's strong enough that some day I imagine I'll come to a stop and at that very moment, every screw will have come loose/undone from years of vibrating and I'll be left sitting in the seat holding just the steering wheel with the car in parts all around me.

I bought my 2013 Pilot used with about 32k miles on it back in May 2016. I've had it for 3 years now with 70k miles and the only expenses I've had to pay were for oil changes, transmission flush, a brand new battery, and a set of alloy rims I purchased since the LX comes with regular steel rims. Like most owners here, I did notice the additional vibrations when the ECO light comes on. I spoke to the dealer about that and they kindly explained to me that it's due to the VCM engine using the i-VTEC system to disable one bank of cylinders during specific driving conditions like freeway driving. This is done to save fuel. They further explained to me that since the weight of the vehicle does not change when the VCM disables one cylinder bank, it is normal for the vehicle to experience some reduction of power causing it to

I really appreciate the design of this car, especially its body shape and roominess. However, I have noticed that the steering is a little too quick for my liking. Additionally, I have had some trouble with the logic built into the key buttons that control the windows and sunroof. I have never been able to figure out the correct sequence, and it can be frustrating to return to my Pilot in the rain and find the windows and sunroof partially open. Another issue I have encountered is that the horizontal trim on the outside of the front doors is very easy to chip, especially when the car next to me is careless with their door openings. Perhaps a different material could be used to prevent this issue. When I spoke to the parts man, he suggested touch-up paint as a solution, but I don't think that's a good solution.

I purchased my 2013 Pilot LX with some regrets for not getting the 4wd model and a sunroof. However, I have since changed my mind. I really appreciate the spacious interior, solid ride, and more than adequate pick up on the highway or when I need it. The seat adjustment gives me a high ride and excellent visibility, and the spacious cargo space with the seats down is a great bonus. Overall, I absolutely love my Pilot!

I absolutely loved driving this vehicle for four years and never once regretted my decision. The leather interior was perfect for my Labrador and so easy to clean. All three seating areas were incredibly comfortable and I especially appreciated having the shifter above the console, which left plenty of room for my bag. The cargo area was also incredibly spacious with the third row of seats flat. Although I fell for the new Pilot and its new safety features, I wouldn't have traded my old car for anything. The only thing I wish it had was a rear-facing laser to help deal with the drivers who seem to be completely oblivious to their surroundings. Unfortunately, there are multiple rear-end collisions on one busy street every day!

There seems to be an issue when the car goes into ECO mode. The dealer told me that it was normal and that I might be sensitive to vibration and sound. However, it feels like a hesitation or stutter and I don't think it's normal. It's a shame because I love everything else about my Pilot, but I'm currently looking to trade it due to this issue.

As a repeat Honda Pilot owner, I have high expectations for the vehicle. However, I have noticed some issues with the engine and transmission in the redesigned 2013 model. Specifically, I have experienced spark knock and vibration in ECO mode on flat roads with light fuel pedal pressure. While the molding over the rear door is also uneven, the dealership has informed me that these are natural characteristics of the vehicle. I am confident that Honda will continue to improve their vehicles and address these issues in future models.

I purchased my 13 Honda Pilot 5 months ago with 17k miles. Unfortunately, at around 10k miles, I began experiencing the known and accepted (by Honda) Shudder Vibration in the VCM. As someone who drives a lot, this is not a characteristic that I can accept. The shuddering and vibrating occurs at about 1500-2200 rpm and can make long trips disgustingly frustrating. While I plan to write to Honda, I don't expect much to come of it since the dealership is already aware. If you're not concerned about long trips being frustrating, then this car may be a good fit for you. However, if you're looking for a smoother ride, I would recommend staying away until Honda gets it right. Additionally, the Bluetooth microphone is outdated (Toyota fixed theirs years ago) and doesn't work well with cell phones. Overall, I think I may trade for a better ride, but it will be difficult since many of the features are nice.

The vibration issue in ECO mode at 1500 RPMs is not acceptable in my Pilot, especially considering its low mileage of 5K. As a confident buyer, I would have preferred to know about this issue beforehand to make an informed decision. It is important to thoroughly test drive a Pilot at 1500 RPMs before making a purchase. If this issue persists, I would have considered investing my $38K in a different vehicle.

My wife had this vehicle for a month. While driving, when the engine went into ECO mode, there would be a stutter and hesitation. The entire floor would vibrate. After researching this problem, it seemed that a lot of people were having the same issue without a fix. We decided to trade the vehicle in instead of dealing with this. We bought a Highlander and it runs much better now.

In ECO mode, you may notice a slight vibration and droning noise when encountering a light grade with a light engine load. This can occur at speeds of 35mph and higher, including highway speeds. While the shop mechanic initially dismissed this as 'normal', I have owned over 20 cars in the last 50 years and have never experienced this before. The mechanic later informed me that this is a common issue with the 2013 Pilots, likely due to a design change made by Honda that they are still working to resolve.
