2023 Honda Pilot problems

honda logo

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Potential buyers should research and consider these issues before deciding whether the Pilot is the right vehicle for them.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-18
  • VIN: 5FNYG1H72PB
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Sunroof glass exploded: While driving in light traffic -- approximately 65 mph -- I heard a loud crash exploding sound and then the sound of glass breaking. No other vehicles were near me but I quickly scanned my front, back, and side windows and mirrors and nothing was broken. No warnings on instrument panel. I could hear wind coming in the vehicle and realized it was coming from the sunroof. I pulled off at the next exit and inspected the top of my Honda Pilot. There was about an 8–10-inch hole in the sunroof glass above the driver's seat with jagged glass angled outward from the hole. No signs of any other damage such as feathers from a bird or scratches from a rock. Just a hole and broken glass. I continued to the drive to my home -- about 20 miles. By the time I got home, more than half of the glass had broken off, leaving an opening about 18 X 30 inches or more. Upon closer inspection, it was clear there was no other damage from other objects just as a rock or animal/bird. It was a very frightening and unnerving experience, especially driving on interstate traffic. I contacted my Honda dealer, and it was suggested I contact Honda customer service. We have filed a claim with our auto insurance.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-17
  • VIN: 5FNYG2H41PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I purchased my 2023 Honda Pilot on April 7, 2023. I had to wait for it to come in which happened roughly 2 weeks later. Within a month or so of having the vehicle while sitting at a traffic light I got 2 warning lights. One being the collision mitigation system problem see your dealer and immediately followed by adaptive cruise control problem see your dealer. I called the dealership to make them aware of the problem and was asked to make an appointment to bring my car in. Upon stopping and turning my car off and starting back up the warning lights were gone. I didn't think too much about it. In August when I had my car in for routine oil change they checked the issue and was unable to find anything. Around this same time my driver side front bumper started gapping. I was told that the clip was either not installed properly or was bent during manufacturing. (still waiting for that back ordered part to repair) In November while traveling with my niece and nephew again stopped at a traffic light EVERY SINGLE warning light started coming on. My dash was lit up like a Christmas tree and the lights were coming one after the other. I pulled over, not only would my car not turn off, my back liftgate would not work either. I was 4 hours away from home. I called the local Honda dealership where I was as I was in a panic. While on hold I was finally able to turn my car off by holding the start/stop engine button for several seconds. When I started my car again all of the lights were still on and lighting up one after the other. As I made my way to the dealership they all went off and all was normal again. I took my car to my local dealership once I got home. Dealership said they were not able to find much except the faulty camera sensors and Honda suggested to start there. (On back order) However in the meantime I was told that I should NOT TRUST ANY OF MY SAFETY FEATURES. My job requires a significant amount of driving and at this point I feel like I have gotten a lemon!!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-22
  • VIN: 5FNYG1H83PB
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: our family was driving on the interstate at 70mph, when the electronic system malfunctioned. The car said every system was failing and to see dealer immediately. The car immediately stopped accelerating, steering wheel shook, and car was difficult to control on the busy, holiday weekend interstate traffic. We had to be towed to Honda dealership, where they "fixed" the problem and we were good to go. 30 minutes later on the busy interstate, the same problem occurred again. Electrical, braking system, brakes started smelling hot. We had to drive on the interstate shoulder at 20 mph for 2 miles to an exit with our family of 5 and our dog. A second tow on Thanksgiving Eve. There were absolutely no warnings from the vehicle before the issue began. The car was bought with 320 miles on the odometer on November 20, and this occurred on November 22 with 570 miles on the odometer. From what we keep reading, we need 4 repairs for the same issue in order for the car to be considered "not operable" or "not safe." Are we supposed to drive on the interstate a few more times , get towed 2 more times, and just hope that we aren't hit and killed by a semi truck after our car suddenly stops accelerating? From looking online, there have been a large number of complaints with exact or similar issues. Does someone have to get killed for something more to happen?

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-03
  • VIN: 5FNYG1H6XPB
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Vehicle will randomly display multiple warning lights- usually starting with the braking system, until all warnings are triggered. This has happened about 10 times so far. Happens in a variety of driving situations. When car is parked, it then requires multiple presses on start button to turn the car off. Every time this happens the rear lift gate is completely disabled and unable to open. About 11/15/2023 I have a video of the errors I can provide- it is a large file and can’t be attached with the other photos. The error also occurred one time while driving at about 70mph using the adaptive cruise. There were no vehicles ahead, but one was approaching from behind- the vehicle brakes or the cruise controls caused the car to rapidly decelerate. I had had to push the accelerator to avoid causing an accident with the person behind me. I had the passenger take a photo of the dashboard warnings. About 11/3/23

Negative 2023 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Kurtis Spencer 2024-11-14

I am confident in my driving and have found that I am achieving 17.1 L/ 100km (14 mpg) in normal mode. However, I believe there may be room for improvement in the gas mileage.

  2. Rickey Stark 2024-10-23

Firstly, I would like to address a minor detail. The addition of piano black gloss plastic around the air bag can be uncomfortable in hot and sunny weather. It can feel like a cell phone flashlight is hitting your eyes. Moving on to a bigger issue, I have noticed that the only way for me to receive text messages is if my infotainment system matches my phone. This means that my text app has to be displayed for me to see incoming messages. I have tried this with both android and apple phones. This means that if I am using FM/AM, Spotify, Google Maps, XM, or any other app, I would not be able to see any incoming text messages. Even with the on-board navigation system, I would not be aware of any text messages coming in during a long journey. This can be frustrating for my family members who may think that I am busy and not responding to their messages. Unfortunately, Honda's response to this issue has been unsatisfactory, as they have stated that this is the way the system is designed.

  3. Pierre Erdman 2024-10-22

I purchased a brand new 2023 Honda Pilot three weeks ago. Unfortunately, the second day the check engine light came on with the message 'Emissions system problem. Power may be reduced. See dealer'. I immediately drove it to the dealership Service Department, but the Service Advisor informed me that I did not have an appointment and had a somewhat indifferent attitude. It took me a lot of effort and almost five trips to eventually get the issue diagnosed as a sensor problem in the gas tank area. They ordered the replacement parts, but unfortunately, it has been over 15 days and there is still no ETA from the supplier. Additionally, the driver side wiper blade flew off the first time I used it in heavy rain. It took three phone calls and two appointments to get the new wiper blade installed because it needed to be ordered. The bottom trim on the left side of the back window is also not glued well and has not been fixed by the Service Department yet. I have been a loyal Honda customer since 1996, having owned two Honda Accords which were very reliable, a Honda Odyssey van which had transmission issues after six years, and a new Acura MDX which I drove for over 15 years and was very reliable. That is why I decided to purchase the 2023 Honda Pilot. However, it seems that Honda's build quality has dramatically degraded. If I had a choice now, I would NEVER buy another Honda car. The manufacturing quality is very poor, and my experience with the Service Department has been very disappointing, especially with the ordering of parts taking over 15 days with no ETA. From the Honda manufacturer to the Service Department, Honda is degrading big time. I cannot recommend anybody to buy the 2023 Pilot.

  4. Maximillian Homenick 2024-10-04

We purchased our 2023 Pilot Trailsport brand new in October of the same year. It currently has 4,300 miles on it. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the computer since day one. The dashboard randomly lights up with every warning light and error message, which can be frustrating. Additionally, there have been times when the remote start does not work, and we have to manually unlock the doors with the key. The automatic high beams also work intermittently. The tailgate is power-operated, and it has been a bit finicky, sometimes not opening as it should. We took it to our local Honda dealership, and while they thought they had resolved the issue, it unfortunately returned the following day. They have ordered parts to fix the problem, but they are currently on back order. We had a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee before this, which also had electrical issues, so we were hoping for better luck with the Honda. While we are disappointed with the issues we have experienced, we still believe in Honda's dependability. However, we cannot recommend the new body style Pilot at this time.

  5. Cleve Turner 2024-10-02

Honda's handling is not up to par. The smoothness of the ride is excessive and lacks the necessary sharpness. When attempting to corner or make sharp turns, the tail shakes, indicating a problem with the body or frame.

  2. Mack Tromp 2024-09-19

  3. Doris Bosco 2024-09-09

We've owned three Odyssey's in the past (2004, 2010, 2019) and now that we live on a dirt road in the country, my wife wanted a vehicle with more ground clearance and 4x4/Awd capabilities. We were looking for a car that was sporty, reliable, had a dealer reasonably close by, and could fit in our single car garage. We also needed it to have the same gas mileage (she averaged 25), 3 rows, lots of storage, and the same cargo capacity/space for our family of 5 and (2) 30 lb Corgi's, their crates, and our luggage. After considering a custom 4”-6” lift and Andrew pilot rear axle/4x4 setup, we decided against it. We looked at the Expedition Timberline and the Yukon/Tahoe Z-71, but they had less usable space than our van and cost $80k+. They also wouldn't fit in our garage and had worse gas mileage. Although the looks were great, the practicality was subpar for us. We then compared the Explorer Timberline and the Pilot Trail. The Explorer is rated for slightly better mileage, but it is a 4cyl twin turbo (pricy to replace) and we didn't like the infotainment screen position as much. The Pilot, on the other hand, has a 3rd row with 3 seatbelts (our youngest is 8 and 55lbs so that works), and we liked the seat material better. It also fits in our garage and we never had trouble with the sync in our Odyssey. So far, we have driven 400 miles on the Pilot and took an hour trip with 4 adults and 3 kids riding in the back. Everyone was sufficiently comfortable and the ride was smooth and predictable. Although we would have liked better mileage (we're getting 21-22 avg so down 3-4 mpg), and the 3rd row is less spacious than our van, we added a roof rack to even it out. All in all, my wife is happy with it, and although it could be better, it's the best combination for us.
