2024 Honda Pilot problems
The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.
The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.
Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.
The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common 2024 Honda Pilot problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2024 Honda Pilot Elite, several common problems have been reported:
- Rear Lift Gate Malfunction: Another prevalent problem is the rear lift gate not opening, which can be attributed to issues with sensors or the vehicle mistakenly detecting motion, preventing the gate from functioning correctly.
- Electrical and Screen Malfunctions: Some owners have faced electrical issues such as the screen not turning on, door alignment problems, steering wheel casing coming apart, and difficulties in opening the car doors using the fob. These electrical malfunctions can impact the overall usability and safety of the vehicle.
- Wheel Sensor Problems: Wheel sensor issues have been reported, leading to the vehicle being in the shop for extended periods due to part backorders. This can result in prolonged downtime and inconvenience for owners waiting for repairs.
These problems with the 2024 Honda Pilot Elite highlight a range of issues affecting different systems within the vehicle, impacting safety, convenience, and overall driving experience. Owners have expressed frustration with the recurrence of these issues and the challenges in getting them resolved promptly and effectively.
Does the Honda Pilot have any problems?
Honda Pilots built between 2006 and 2008, as well as 2017 to 2021 models, have considerably fewer reported complaints than other model years. This is despite the investigation into engine stop-start system failures in the later model years and a recall involving the hood latch on 2016 to 2019 Pilots.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 5FNYG1H89RB
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Steering makes clicking and creaking noise after vehicle is warmed up and driving slow, like parking. Took it to Mcgraft Honda and service adviser heard the noise. Dealership then informed me that the tech could not duplicate the noise and told me it’s normal to hear noises while turning.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-23
- VIN: 5FNYG1H86RB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I purchased a 2024 Honda Pilot on [XXX]. In March, between the 4th & 22nd (approx 1800 mi) I thought I saw a crack but as my vehicle had been parked in the parking structure where I live adjacent the ports of LB & LA (prone to excessive dust) & recent rain/moisture causing the dust to form into lines I figured to wait until washing before confirming. On 3/22 I confirmed a crack - no point of impact. As I had planned a vacation to Mexico I opted to photograph the crack AND the vehicle in Mexico capturing date and location stamp. I returned on 4/16. On 4/29 I took my vehicle to El Monte Honda. I let the service advisor know about the crack & upon inspection he found a 2nd crack - no point of impact. The advisor said they were scratches on the inside - 2 piece laminated. I pushed back because the visible thickness of the crack I discovered did not match the hairline feel. He convinced me that replacing the windshield could lead to other issues such as leakage - a known problem on the current generation so I asked him to note the damage - he noted a scratch. I took the vehicle but ultimately decided it wasn't fair as both were in drivers line of sight. Upon return he said the system used to communicate between the dealership and manufacturer was down and would have to come back. I called 2 months later - no return call. 9/13/24 I decide to go to local dealer (Long Beach Honda). The service advisor inspected and said he would call Honda but did not. Driving away I noted a smudge where the advisor located a crack - a 3rd crack, no point of impact. Called Honda & they said no record of me going to the dealer. Closed case. On 10/1 I returned to LB Honda with a record from 4/29 and images. He said possible glass delamination but only because a Boeing engineer reenforced stress cracks. He did not return calls nor advise Honda. Called Honda. They refuse to do anything without a diagnosis and service advisors are running away in what appears a deliberate effort. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- VIN: 5FNYG1H8XRB
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Automatic emergency breaking applied at 50mph on a perfectly clear road with not a single car around. Caused panic in the vehicle and would have absolutely caused severe collision if there were any cars behind. Dealer said cannot do anything without reproducible issue. Police was not called. Thanks God nobody got hurt. Not the first time this happens, it happened crossing railroads before. But this time there was absolutely nothing on the road.
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
- VIN: 5FNYG1H81RB
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: Strange clicking noise during low speed steering left or right and moving steering wheel while parked. Honda dealer states they are unable to replicate issue. Issue is very unusual for a new vehicle. Multiple people have same issues on forums and Facebook groups. This is a potential safety issue if there is a faulty electrical steering gear box or suspension component. Honda needs to take responsibility and fix this issue instead of saying they can’t replicate it or that it maybe normal. I took video it is a sound that is audible inside and out.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- VIN: 5FNYG1H74RB
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: When pushing the accelerator there is typically anywhere from a 2 to 5 second delay before the vehicle starts to move. On average the delay is around 2 seconds, but there have been times where trying to pull into traffic the vehicle would not move for approximately 4 to 5 seconds creating a hazard. When the care is moving at higher speeds, the acceleration and gas pedal response is accurate, this only occurs when at a stand still or at very slow speeds. I have taken the car to the dealership to be evaluated and they informed me that the vehicle is operating as it is intended to and the delay is normal. I believe that this acceleration delay is inevitably going to cause an accident because it is difficult to gauge when the care is going to begin moving due to the inconsistent acceleration issue.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-29
- VIN: 5FNYG1H78RB
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: When transmission is in "Normal" operating mode and starting to move, it has a hesitation when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, then the motor races and the vehicle lunges forward. I have taken it to the dealership but they said they found nothing wrong. The problem is worse when the motor is cold but it happens at any motor temperature. I have read about many, many people having this problem.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
- VIN: 5FNYG2H59RB
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: DRIVING AT 45MPH OPEN HIGHWAY MANY PROBLEMS START APPEARING ON DRIVERS SCREEN ,BRAKINGSYSTEM, PROBLEMS WITH ALL SAFTY SYSTEMS, COMPUTER POSTING ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS , ENGINESHAKING WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. CAR TOWED TO DEALER ON FRIDAY 8/2 AS OF 8/5 12 NOON IT IS STILL AT DEALER , MORRISTOWN TN HONDA FORTUNATELY A SFE PLACE TO PULL OUT OF RD WAS AVAILABLE NO EARLY WARNING OF ANYTHING. STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
- VIN: 5FNYG2H58RB
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing safety issues with my leased Honda, which I obtained in March 2024. Shortly after leasing the vehicle, I noticed that the sensors would frequently activate and deactivate without any apparent reason. In May 2024, while driving, all the sensors turned on, deactivating all safety features and causing the car to swerve. The sensor lights remained on the next day, prompting me to take the car to the dealership. I was informed that the sensor and a camera required repairs, which were subsequently addressed. Despite my concerns about the safety of driving this car, especially with three children, I was assured that the issue was resolved. I filed a complaint with Honda Corporate, and they indicated that the issue would need to recur 2-3 times before considering a different vehicle. Unfortunately, on [XXX], all the sensors activated again while I was driving, causing the car to stop accelerating in the middle of a busy road with my children in the back seat. This placed us in a life-threatening situation, as other vehicles were traveling at high speeds. The transmission light also turned on, advising to avoid high speeds. The next morning, I reported the issue to Honda and arranged for roadside assistance to tow the car to the dealership. During the towing process, the sensors activated again, and the car struggled to accelerate. Once at the dealership, I provided videos of the car's behavior to Ricardo, the service advisor, who acknowledged the severity of the issue. However, he later informed me that the sensors were not currently active, and the scanner could not detect any issues. Despite keeping the car overnight for further testing, they were unable to identify or repair the problem. I was advised to either pick up the car or leave it with them, but no loaner vehicle was offered. I am extremely concerned about the safety of driving this car. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-14
- VIN: 5FNYG2H46RB
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Sudden automatic brake was applied for no apparent reason. There was no collision situation at all. Car suddenly applied strong brake when we were driving at 40 MPH. The car came to a complete stop on a busy road, luckily for us the vehicle behind was bit far back. It was so scary.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-09
- VIN: 5FNYG1H71RB
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: on 3/9/24 while traveling west on I10 the panoramic rooftop window shattered. Had the canvas from the sunroof been rolled back the shattered glass from the window would have come down on my husband and myself while driving 75 miles per hour. Because the glass shattered it had to be taken back to the dealer for repair. Which is still there 6/17/24. The glass was embedded in the track for the skylight. Dealer is aware of issue.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-14
- VIN: 5FNYG1H80RB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: My Pilot has less than 1300 miles on it and when in lower gears the transmission will rev high, hesitate, then jerk forward, at times feeling as though it’s losing power before the gear catches. Called the dealership who told me it’s normal and without any warning lights on they won’t find anything.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
- VIN: 5FNYG1H86RB
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Several crunching noises and knocking noises when moving the steering wheel at low speeds.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
- VIN: 5FNYG1H24RB
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: Every time I drive my 2024 Honda Pilot I get dizzy and a headache from the distorted windshield. This is very dangerous to drive like this everyday to my jobs.
AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-18
- VIN: 5FNYG1H51RB
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
- Summary: While driving in the city a warning came up on the dash stating "Supplemental restraint system problem. See your dealer." and the red seat belt/air bag symbol turned on and remained on for the remainder of the drive home (about 45 min at variable speed). As soon as I got home I turned the car off and back on and the warnings disappeared. I drove the vehicle for another 30 minutes and the warnings did not re-appear. However, I noticed that the seat belts used to tighten / lock while the vehicle was in D (drive) but they no longer do. I also tried performing a hard stop in a safe area to see if the belt would lock while my body was jolted forward but it did not. The vehicle had 6 passengers when the warning first came on and all of us experienced loose belts. This makes me concerned about the functionality of the restraint system, especially in the event of a crash.
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-07
- VIN: 5FNYG1H87RB
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I noticed the windshield was distorted and wavy after purchasing my 2024 Elite. Honda approved the first replacement right away. The dealership claims the replacement windshield is defect free because they are annoyed with me. The replacement windshield also has rippling and distortion that is very dangerous and is completely unacceptable. Honda is suggesting I take it to another dealer. I already tried that, but was refused service because they found out I just had it at another dealership. Dealerships don’t want to get involved with this known issue by Honda. Honda does not care about customers safety and repeatedly says they can’t do anything unless the dealership confirms there is an issue! This is absurd and downright dangerous!
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-24
- VIN: 5FNYG1H77RB
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: new vehicle rough shifting from gear 1 to 2

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-31
- VIN: 5FNYG1H89RB
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The windshield that is installed on my vehicle distorts the view as you look through the windshield. It warps what you see looking through the windshield. I can best describe it as looking through a funhouse mirror or looking through some strange prescription glasses. It is very distracting and has caused me to nearly get in an accident. It gives me a headache with only moments of use. I don't feel safe driving the car. It is very hard to see and judge distance in front of the vehicle. I notified the dealer, and they said Honda knows about the issue. I have been waiting on the replacement windshield for 3+ weeks as the dealer said the windshields are backordered. I am stuck paying for a car that I can't drive safely.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-05
- VIN: 5FNYG1H80RB
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The vehicle was purchased brand new on Feb 1st 2024. While driving on the highway on Feb 5th 2024, with only 105 miles on the odometer, and no prior warning messages/lights, many warning messages were suddenly displayed on the dashboard, repeating one after the other, instructing that various safety features were disabled, displaying: "Parking brake not available", "Brake system problem", "Brake performance may be reduced", "Brake hold system problem", "Anti-lock brake system problem", "Vehicle stability assist system problem", "Reduced traction and handling", "Electric power steering system problem. Steering assist reduced", "Hill start assist problem. Vehicle may roll upon brake release", "Trailer stability assist system problem", "Hill descent control system problem", "Adaptive cruise control system problem", "Lane keeping assist system problem", "Collision mitigation braking system problem", "Road departure mitigation system problem", "Low speed braking system control problem", "Auto high beam problem", "Parking sensor problem". In addition, after coming to a full stop and shifting to Park, (or, turning off the car) the tailgate would not open regardless of how we tried (dash button, remote key, tailgate handle, foot swing). Also, the car would not turn off after pressing the On/Off button. The button would need to be pressed repeatedly to turn off the vehicle. All of these safety systems and functions were disabled at the same time without prior warning while driving at highway speeds. The Honda dealer confirmed the problem, inspected the vehicle, and concluded a faulty ABS control module is to blame. We know of one other 2024 Honda Pilot owner in our neighborhood who experienced the same issue, which makes it likely that this is a common problem. Honda should have designed redundancies to prevent sudden simultaneous failure of so many safety systems. Honda should recall all affected vehicles to replace faulty ABS control modules before people are hurt.
LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-08

The warnings first appeared on January 8, 2024. The Pilot was taken into the Honda dealership on January 9, 2024. It remains there with no definite time for the problem to be resolved.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 5FNYG1H72RB
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The doors on my new Honda Pilot have an extremely sharp, hazardous, protruding edge on the lower outer corner at the bottom of the doors. The edge is so sharp, that while exiting the passenger door, it punctured my left leg in my calf on the left side of my shin bone. This required me to have 12 stitches in my leg. The laceration was very deep and exposed my then swollen bleeding inner tissue. The impact forced the outer skin underneath my intact layer of skin creating a V shape like the edge of the door. This required extra time and care to first get the buried skin out so that it could then be sewn back together. The edge was very pointed hard and sharp. There needs to be a protective covering (rounding the edge) so it won't be so sharp. Or adding additional rubber or plastic, preventing it from piercing a leg. In the photos ,it is the black protrusion that is sharp not the white metal on the door. It is a little difficult to see from the photos, but it is a hard sharp black edge that is pointed and what caused the damage to my leg.

Great job on the upgrades for the new Pilot, Honda!
-
I recently upgraded from my 2012 Pilot to the 2024 Pilot Touring model. I absolutely loved my 2012 and it was still in great condition, but I was impressed with the amount of space the 2024 model had to offer. As someone who is 6'5

Love everything about your pilot. You were originally going to get the touring but you figured you deserved to go all out and get the elite and you're so glad you did. You love everything from the paint job (Sonic pearl gray) to the smooth riding on the freeway. Learning all the features is slightly overwhelming but fun. It's definitely worth the money.

After conducting a lot of research, including reading reviews from sources such as Car and Driver, we ultimately decided on the Honda EX-L 8. The cargo space is sufficient for our needs, and we even opted for roof rails in case we need to mount a carrier. Our mechanic highly recommended this vehicle, and advised us against the Acadia, Explorer, and Terrain. While we also considered the Grand Cherokee-L and the comparable Highlander, the trim packages we wanted were out of our price range. Fortunately, we were able to find a good trim package with the Honda. It's worth noting that the third row is only suitable for children. We're very happy with our purchase!

We recently purchased a new Honda Pilot 2024, but have been experiencing an issue since the beginning. After warming up, the car is emitting exhaust fumes inside, which appear to be its own. Have any other Honda Pilot owners experienced this problem? Despite a service visit, we have yet to find a solution.

We purchased a 2024 Elite trim in December 2023 with only 12 miles on it and an MSRP of $52,400. With over 1200 miles on it now, it has proven to be a reliable and capable vehicle, especially during the harsh Chicago winter. The remote key works flawlessly from over 100 meters away, and the heated steering wheel is a fantastic feature. While there are some minor quality control issues, overall the car performs exactly as intended. However, during a recent highway drive of over 30 minutes, I did notice some concerning issues. At speeds over 65mph, the steering wheel felt too light and the road conditions seemed to control the car more than the driver, which is a serious safety concern. Additionally, the steering wheel makes a clicking sound, which seems to be a common issue among new Pilots. I have made an appointment to have this addressed. The suspension is also quite stiff, which may not be ideal for those living in remote areas with rough roads. Despite these issues, the engine performs admirably. Overall, while there are some concerns with the car's safety and comfort, the Elite features are still impressive and valuable.Honda test drivers may not have the same level of experience as professional test engineers, but it is important to note that the Pilot has undergone rigorous testing to ensure its safety and reliability. While every vehicle has its own unique characteristics, the Pilot's steering is designed to provide a smooth and responsive driving experience. Any issues with balancing or quality control can be addressed at the dealership, and Honda is committed to providing excellent customer service. It is important to make an informed decision when purchasing a vehicle, and the Pilot remains a strong contender in its class.

I am confident in my driving and have found that I am achieving 17.1 L/ 100km (14 mpg) in normal mode. However, I believe there may be room for improvement in the gas mileage.

It seems like there's some noise and the technicians are having trouble fixing the problem.

Firstly, I would like to address a minor detail. The addition of piano black gloss plastic around the air bag can be uncomfortable in hot and sunny weather. It can feel like a cell phone flashlight is hitting your eyes. Moving on to a bigger issue, I have noticed that the only way for me to receive text messages is if my infotainment system matches my phone. This means that my text app has to be displayed for me to see incoming messages. I have tried this with both android and apple phones. This means that if I am using FM/AM, Spotify, Google Maps, XM, or any other app, I would not be able to see any incoming text messages. Even with the on-board navigation system, I would not be aware of any text messages coming in during a long journey. This can be frustrating for my family members who may think that I am busy and not responding to their messages. Unfortunately, Honda's response to this issue has been unsatisfactory, as they have stated that this is the way the system is designed.

Ok, so we had the 24' EXL for 3 months. Overall, it's just okay. Let me break down the good and the bad. On the positive side, it has more room in the middle, 3rd row, and cargo area than anything else. It's also comfortable and fairly quiet. The radio sounds great and the larger screen is easy to navigate. However, on the negative side, it does consume a lot of gas, averaging only 18MPG, which is much lower than our previous Pathfinder with the same engine size that averaged 21MPG. The climate controls are also a bit difficult to operate, and the rear air is always on when you hit sync, which can be annoying. Additionally, the heat doesn't perform well in really cold weather due to poor insulation around the doors. The rear air lacks in its ability to circulate due to being on the console only and not in the roof like others. The paddle shifters are also in the way and hit your hands while driving on highways. Lastly, it has an overall weak feel and doesn't feel solid or mechanically sound. It's already making clunking noises when backing out of the driveway and then going into drive. I don't feel it will last a long time like I hoped. I should have stuck with Toyota.
