2012 Honda Pilot problems

honda logo

The Honda Pilot is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured by Honda since 2002. Primarily aimed at the North American market, the Pilot is the largest SUV produced by Honda. Pilots are currently manufactured in Lincoln, Alabama, and the Pilot was produced in Alliston, Ontario until April 2007. The first generation Pilot was released in April 2002 as a 2003 model.

The Pilot shares its platform with the Acura MDX, as well as the North American market Odyssey minivan. The Pilot's unibody construction and independent suspension are designed to provide handling similar to that of a car, and it has integrated perimeter frame rails to permit towing and light off-road use.

Prior to the introduction of the Pilot, Honda marketed the compact crossover CR-V and the Honda Passport (a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo). The Honda Passport that was sold between 1993 and 2002 was a truck-based design. The Pilot is Honda's largest SUV, although the 2010 Crosstour surpassed the Pilot in length. The Pilot is now currently in its fourth generation, with multiple design changes occurring from getting bigger and resembling a truck to downsizing and becoming sleeker to now a slight mix of both.

The Pilot is sold in North America and the Middle East, while the Honda MDX (first generation Acura MDX) was marketed in Japan and Australia for several years. The second-generation Pilot was also sold in Russia, Ukraine, South Korea, Latin America, and the Philippines.

Common 2012 Honda Pilot problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here are the common problems reported by owners of the 2012 Honda Pilot:

  1. Peeling Paint: Owners have complained about peeling paint, especially on the roof, around 100,000 miles. Repainting can cost around $1,000, and this issue is primarily cosmetic but can lead to more severe problems in wet or rust-prone areas.
  2. Hesitation While Accelerating: Some owners have experienced hesitation while accelerating, typically around 40,000 miles. While there are no mechanical issues associated with this problem, resetting the engine computer has helped some owners resolve it.
  3. Transmission Shifting Issues: Owners have reported transmission shifting issues within the first 35,000 miles. Updating the transmission software at dealerships usually resolves this problem.
  4. Recalls: There are 9 recalls for the 2012 Honda Pilot, with the most serious being related to the fuel vent shut-off valve, which increases the risk of a fire. The other recalls are related to airbags, which are not a concern once replaced.
  5. Fuel Injector Failure: Fuel injector failures are another common issue with the Honda Pilot, which can be expensive to fix. Replacing the injectors under warranty may solve the problem temporarily.
  6. Excessive Oil Consumption: Excessive oil consumption is reported in some model years of the Honda Pilot, especially after 100,000 miles. Low oil levels can lead to engine damage and overheating, requiring frequent monitoring and topping up of oil.
  7. Recurring Fault Codes: Some owners have experienced recurring fault codes, which can be irritating and potentially hide real problems. It is crucial to address these codes promptly to avoid unintentional damage to the vehicle.

These issues highlight some of the common concerns reported by owners of the 2012 Honda Pilot. Regular maintenance and addressing these problems promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: 5FNYF3H91CB
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The vehicle's paint is literally peeling away from every horizontal and connected vertical surface. Without paint on metal, rust is happening, weakening the metal structure of the vehicle. have reached out to Honda USA and they informed they had no responsibility for the paint, yet the service writer at my local Honda dealer said that my vehicle's paint, Pearl White, has been peeling off Honda vehicles for years and Honda knows it to be an issue yet only occasionally offers to be of any assistance. I am the original owner of this 2012 Honda Pilot, the vehicle has never been in an accident, yet in the past year paint has come off of the vehicle at an alarming rate (literally in sheets). To be able to make necessary restorations the front window was broken and had to be replaced (at my expense). If Honda knows its Pearl White paint doesn't adhere to the metal body, that is a known product defect and they are potentially contributing to accelerated body deterioration (a safety concern). I have all current documentation for the restoration, and upon attempting to pick up the vehicle it was discovered that the hood was sustaining the same problem as the roof and upper body. There are no impacted "warning" lights as this is not mechanical, and I am unclear how separating paint (according to our local Honda dealer is always Pearl White) poses an immediate safety problem for me or others, but if you are not aware that Honda dealers know the Pearl White paint is defective, what else are they not telling you/us about our vehicle and the vehicles owned by hundreds of thousands of Americans? Please conduct your own investigation and contact me if you'd like copies of our correspondence with Honda USA and the original estimate versus the final bill ($1000 more) for the first round of re-painting. We now are having a second round of painting to address the paint failure on the hood. Thank you.

  • Summary: I was driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the left-hand lane alongside the concrete barrier. The road curved to the right and when I tried to gently steer to the right the steering wheel got stuck and locked. I wasn’t able to steer to the right and so the car hit the barrier. The steering then unlocked. Since I was trying to originally steer to the right, the car moved to the right and hit the guard rail along the right-hand side of the highway where the car finally came to a stop. It was fortunate that there were no other cars close to my car when this happened. I don’t know what caused the steering wheel to lock up. The car was very badly damaged and eventually determined to be a total loss. I suffered a concussion and need ongoing PT and OT. Also, I am limited to only working part-time until my concussion symptoms improve. The car was well maintained and had passed the state inspections a couple of weeks before. The issue could have been caused by a front suspension assembly error.

Negative 2012 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Arvel Labadie 2024-11-01

I have had my 2012 Pilot for 6 months now, which I bought brand new. Unfortunately, I have found that the seats are quite hard and an inch shorter than my jeep. Additionally, the lumbar support does not retract far enough, and I am unable to shut the middle vents off. I also accidentally knocked it out of gear while changing the radio dial. The sunroof blows directly on my head, and the car is quite loud over bumps and on the highway. Furthermore, I have noticed that I can't open one or all the windows without a very loud noise that sounds like it will blow my eardrums out! The radio and heat controls are not at all easy to control, and the inside of the front tires are wearing badly after only 12000 miles. Unfortunately, 4 adults cannot fit comfortably in the car, and there is a vibration in the front end. Lastly, the wiper and light controls are hidden behind the steering wheel. Overall, I am not satisfied with my purchase and cannot wait to get rid of it!

I recently purchased a 2012 model and have already driven 3500 miles. While I am generally satisfied with the vehicle, I have noticed that it lacks power when starting from a standstill. It seems that the first gear may have been adjusted to improve fuel efficiency, or the computer settings may need to be adjusted. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to merge into traffic as the power only kicks in at around 3500rpm. During a recent 2000 mile road trip through AZ, NM, and CO, I was able to achieve an average of 21 MPG, which is not bad considering the speeds of 80-85 mph and the presence of hills. Overall, the vehicle is functioning well, although I do wish that the passenger seat had lumbar support and that there was a full-time power plug available.

After completing a 4100 mile road trip through 5 states with my wife and 3 kids, I can confidently say that the Pilot exceeded my expectations. The vehicle's handling was impressive, and its spacious interior provided ample room for my family. Despite having previously owned larger vehicles such as Suburbans and Excursions, I found the Pilot to be more than capable. Additionally, the gas mileage was good. While I did have some minor issues with the audio controls and dashboard lights, I believe that Honda can easily address these concerns. Although the seats did become uncomfortable after 10 hours of driving, this is a common issue with most vehicles. Overall, I had a great experience with the Pilot and would highly recommend it.

This is my first summer with this car and I have noticed that when the AC is on and the car is not moving, there is a loud moaning noise coming from the engine. I took my car to the dealer from where I purchased this vehicle and was informed that Honda Motors is aware of this issue in the 2012 Pilot. However, the problem has not been solved yet. Please note that the noise is very loud when the AC is on and the car is not moving, which can be quite annoying and even give me migraines. I would recommend waiting until Honda solves this problem before considering purchasing this vehicle.

Congratulations on your new purchase! I hope you and your grandkids enjoy the extra space. It's understandable that you wanted to try a Honda after the premium fuel requirement of the Pathfinder. Although the fuel mileage may not be as good, Honda is known for its reliability. I'm glad to hear that the Bluetooth paired effortlessly with your wife's phone. Please keep us updated on how the car is doing as you put more miles on it. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Positive 2012 Honda Pilot car reviews

  1. Brycen Pollich 2025-01-05

For my needs of a vehicle that can comfortably hold 6 people, tow a trailer, get 20+ MPG, serve as my office, and be good for customers without giving the wrong impression, I found the Honda Pilot to be the perfect fit. I have been driving it for about 4 and a half years now and have put 170,000 miles on it. Overall, it has been a reliable vehicle, but I have experienced a front end shimmy while braking, which seems to be a common issue according to many reviews. I have tried replacing the brake rotors, but they only helped for a short while. I plan on installing Akibono rotors and pads next as they are known to stay unwarped. As of my latest update on 2-27-20, the car has 290,000 miles on it and still feels like it could go a million more. The Akibono rotor/pad set up was a great choice and lasted 120k miles. However, I did experience a failure in the lumbar support for the seat, which unfortunately cannot be fixed with OEM parts. I had to improvise and put a makeshift pad in the back and zip-tie it in place. As long as the car doesn't get wrecked, it should continue to serve me well!

Among the 3-row seat SUVs we looked at, the Pilot stood out the most due to its spacious interior that comfortably seats 8 passengers. We found the ride to be very smooth and the VCM engine provides proven quality and fuel efficiency. It's important to note that the Pilot is not meant for those who frequently test drive or own sports cars, but it's perfectly fine for family use. Overall, we highly recommend the Pilot for its solid ride and spacious interior.

  3. Hailey Bernier 2024-09-05

Fun to drive. Very good fuel MPG compared to previous models.

  4. Ryley Walter 2024-08-29

It's great to hear positive feedback about the 2012 Pilot! I'm glad to hear that you've had a good experience with it and that the drive is much improved. It's impressive that you're getting 23 MPG on mostly high driving, and the interior sounds really comfortable and impressive for its price point. The new sound insulated cabin and sealed doors for sound are also really impressive features, especially with the addition of active noise cancellation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Wade Rippin 2024-08-09

After driving a small Audi for 3 years, I decided to switch back to an SUV. I was looking for three-row seating, 4-wheel drive, good handling, and decent gas mileage. Initially, I had ruled out the 2011 Pilot due to complaints about road noise, which I really dislike. However, I was thrilled to learn that this issue had been resolved in the 2012 model, which immediately moved it back to the top of my list. I have been driving it for 6 weeks now and have already covered 4,000 miles. I am pleased to report that it is pretty quiet (for an SUV), handles well both on and off paved roads, is comfortable, has great storage, and gets about 21 mpg in mostly highway driving. While acceleration is a little slow and braking distances are a bit long, overall I am really happy with my Pilot.
