The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.

Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.

Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.

The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common 2020 Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit 2020 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and electrical systems.

  • Engine Misfiring: One of the most common problems is engine misfiring, which can be caused by various factors such as faulty ignition coils, fuel injectors, or carbon buildup on intake valves.
  • Rattling Engine Noise: Another common problem is a loud rattling noise from the engine at cold start-up, which can be caused by a faulty valve timing control (VTC) actuator. According to Honda Service Bulletin 16-088, replacing the VTC actuator can repair this problem.
  • Battery Failure: Premature battery failure is a common problem in the Honda Fit 2020, with several owners reporting multiple battery replacements and roadside assistance calls.
  • Starter Failure: Starter failure is another common problem in the Honda Fit 2020, which can be caused by a faulty starter motor or the start/stop switch. Honda has been known to goodwill the switches but not the starters, so it is recommended to get a battery with a 3-year warranty from somewhere other than Honda.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues are also common in the Honda Fit 2020, with several owners reporting problems with the right-side display of the instrument cluster and the 12-volt battery. It is recommended to check for recalls on the NHTSA website and have the car properly inspected by a mechanic before buying.
  • Climate System Failure: Some owners have reported issues with the climate system, including the AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, and refrigerant leakage. These issues can cause water leakage into the interior of the car and should be addressed promptly.

In summary, the Honda Fit 2020 has several common problems related to the engine and electrical systems. These issues can cause engine misfiring, loud rattling noises, battery failure, starter failure, electrical issues, and climate system failure. It is recommended to keep a jump starter in the car, get a 12v volt meter for the 12v socket, and learn what normal voltage is. A load tester can also be used to determine when it's time to replace the battery. It is also recommended to check for recalls on the NHTSA website and have the car properly inspected by a mechanic before buying.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-03
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H84LM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving multiple error lights came on. I took my car in and they said it was carbon build up due to "bad gas." They cleaned it and it has been working fine. However, this is an acknowledged problem with the 2018 and 2019 Honda Fit. Honda actually extended the warranty for those years to cover those repairs. My car only had 22156 miles on it. And the error I experienced is the exact error that was reported to happen with the 2018 and 2019 models, however I was told my car was not covered because it's a 2020 model. I feel they should have to cover this error in the 2020 model, as well.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-14
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H64LM
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The power steering rack is malfunctioning. It is available for inspection upon request. The steering wheel does not return by itself while vehicle is in motion-- the steering becomes difficult to steer even at slight angles intermittently. This led to difficultly steering while travelling, putting me and my passengers at risk. Yes, a honda dealership and a private garage have confirmed that the power steering rack is malfunctioning and the cause of the unusual behavior in the car. The vehicle has been inspected by a honda dealership (manufacturer). There were no warning lights or signals to indicate anything was wrong. I only noticed the problem while driving because it is my car, and I am familiar with how it feels to drive.

  • VIN: 3HGGK5H82LM
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: Multiple warning light up on dash and loud beeping upon start up. No way to remove warnings which distract. Multiple safety features disabled 95% of time and the randomly work fine 5% of the time. Not related to any obvious damage or incident. Got in car one day to find several warnings and loud beeps. Acc, lkas, road diparture mitigation, collision mitigation, and auto high beams all out. Warning light for each, plus a brake system light.

  • Summary: Vehicle had entire dash warning lights appear suddenly and had noticed a week prior a vibration/clicking when driving at higher speeds over 50mph. Took to dealer and was told vehicle has had misfires and fuel system was badly dirty and needed an immediate cleaning. Why are the 2020 Fit’s not included in the extended warrant on this as the 2018-2019’s are?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-10
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H47LM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The dealership changed the oil on my 2020 Honda Fit, and the Oil Life display was reset to 100%, on 1/8/24. Two days later the LCD panel, which shows the fuel gauge, odometer, remaining range, oil life, etc. began to intermittently go blank or become garbled and unreadable. This has continued to happen without warning. Especially with respect to the fuel gauge, I believe this is a safety issue, since my only indication of low fuel may occur only when (and if!) the low fuel warning goes on. I had scheduled an appointment to have the dealership look at the panel, but cancelled it when I learned that 1. this has apparently been a common problem in the Honda Fit since at least the 2015 models and 2. the dealership would charge me a $160 diagnostic fee. My car is six months out of warranty, but has only 7,230 miles on it. I no longer feel safe driving moderate to long distances, since the instrument panel is no longer reliable.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-09
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H87LM
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Automatic emergency brake bleeps warning and brakes get locked while driving. This happens all the the without any objects nearby or vehicles close enough to initiate the emergency brake. Emergency brake engages and locks itself in normal driving conditions. This has happened multiple times, and put the driver in serious hazard in busy traffic.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-07
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H87LM
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) consistently provides a false positive when approaching a particular railroad crossing near my home. When about 20 yards away from the crossing (a single set of tracks) approaching at 30-35mph, the BRAKE warning flashes and beeps for a second or two, but it's not clear that any actual braking is applied. This does not happen if I slow to about 20mph or less before approaching the crossing. At this particular railroad crossing, the road is going downhill towards the tracks and the tracks cross the road at 90degrees. This happens day or night (there are street lights at this crossing). The forward collision warning distance is set to Normal. At other railroad crossings where the road is level or going uphill towards the tracks, I have not experienced this issue.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-06
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H49LM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: A Nissan pickup towing a trailer ran a red light and crashed into the front middle driver’s side area of my 2020 Honda Fit. The driver who ran the red light was traveling at an approximate speed between 40-50 mph. At the moment of impact the left side of my head hit the driver’s side window. The entire left side of my body was forcefully thrown against the door. After my body went left, the force of the impact caused my body to flail to the right. My car is equipped with front, side curtain and side airbags, for a total of six airbags; none of which deployed during or after my car was struck. According to the diagram located in my Honda Fit’s owner’s manual, there is an airbag sensor located on the front/middle section on the driver’s side, the exact point where my car was crashed into. I sustained several injuries that I feel could’ve been prevented had the airbags deployed as they were designed. At the time of the accident, I was turning left after I had gotten a green turning arrow to proceed,. I was traveling at approximately 15-20 mph. I rapidly decelerated as a means to prevent the collision, but was unable to avoid it, as the other driver did not swerve or brake to avoid me. He hit me at full speed. My car has been declared a total loss by my insurance company. The car is available for inspection. I have retained an attorney and we will be getting an investigator to obtain the data from the car’s event data recorder as soon as possible. There were no warning lights for airbags prior to the accident. I was properly wearing my seatbelt at the time of the accident. No post manufacturing modifications have ever been made to my car. I called Honda to report this on February 10, 2023. One of the biggest reasons I chose a Honda Fit, in addition to it meeting my personal needs and size preferences, was because of its safety features, yet when I needed them, the airbag system failed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-05
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H97LM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The rear (tailgate) window on our 2020 Honda Fit shattered (busted) on its own for no reason. Nothing hit or even touched the car. No other cars were around. No other damage to the car. The car has been parked on the side of road for about 5-10 min. We were staying about 2-3 feet away when we heard a load explosion. Most of the glass held up due to ceramic tint but some glass shards (especially from the corners) were ejected several feet away. Oddly, the substantial cracks were not in the center, but in the corners. This is very concerning because glass shards could cause serious injury. We are grateful we were not in the car when it happened. We are just shocked and cannot understand what could possible cause this. We did some research and became alarmed how many other Honda car owners experienced the same issue. Our car is less than a year old. Given the way the glass shattered, there is no logical explanation to this other than it appears to be a defect in the glass or during the installation of the rear window. We took the car to dealership (Paragon Honda) and the dealership refused to cover the cost and insisted we repair through the insurance. The dealership refused even to inspect or investigate, claiming that windows do not shatter on their own. After doing some research, this is clearly not true and appears to be common issue with Honda models. Moreover, the New Vehicle Limited Warranty explicitly provides that it covers "broken, chipped, or scratched window glass" if it is due to defect in material or workmanship." We will do whatever it's needed to get the window repair, but I urge Honda to investigate this issue because rear windows exploding on their own pause a serious safety concern. I have no doubt if my window was not tinted, we would be hit with glass pieces as we were just a few feet away when it happened. How can Honda ensure this does not happen again? Please contact me with any follow-ups. I also have photos of the window.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-02-10
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H43LM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: DIGITAL DISPLAY (MILEAGE, OIL LEVEL, FUEL GAUGE, ETC) FAILS WHEN TURNING VEHICLE ON DURING COLD WEATHER. IT REMAINS BACKLIT, BUT ALL TEXT DISAPPEARS. TYPICALLY, THIS HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING ON EITHER HIGHWAY OR CITY STREETS. THIS MEANS AS A DRIVER I'M UNABLE TO SEE IF I NEED FUEL AMONG OTHER THINGS. WHEN THE DISPLAY RETURNS IT IS ILLEGIBLE. IT'S AS IF ALL TEXT IS TRYING TO DISPLAY ON THE SCREEN AT ONCE. THIS IS DISTRACTING, UNSTABLE, AND EXTREMELY UNSAFE. KNOWING FUEL LEVELS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE WHEN IT COMES TO OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE. I FEEL SO UNSAFE KNOWING I'M NOT ABLE TO VIEW CRUCIAL INFORMATION ABOUT MY VEHICLE. I SPOKE WITH A DEALERSHIP TODAY WHO INFORMED ME THAT THE ENTIRE DISPLAY IS LIKELY DEFECTIVE AND WILL NEED REPLACEMENT BASED UPON THEIR OWN PRIOR EXPERIENCE. I WILL BE TAKING MY CAR IN TO CONFIRM THIS AND HAVE THAT DONE.
