2018 Honda Accord hybrid problems
The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.
Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.
In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.
In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common 2018 Honda Accord hybrid problems
The 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid, a popular choice among hybrid sedan enthusiasts, has some common issues that potential owners should be aware of. One of the most frequently reported problems is easily cracked windshields. This issue is not mechanically damaging but can be costly to repair, with an average cost of around $1200. The windshield can chip, and the auto-braking feature can resonate through the windshield, causing a large crack to appear from any weak point. This can obstruct the driver's vision and potentially lead to a hefty ticket.
Another common issue is the unexpected activation of the collision mitigation braking system. This system is designed to apply the brakes automatically to avoid accidents. However, some owners have reported that the system activates when there are no cars around, causing the vehicle to apply the brakes suddenly. This can be disconcerting for drivers and potentially lead to accidents, especially if the vehicle is in motion.
The 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid has also been reported to have issues with the forward collision avoidance system, leading to a still-open investigation. Specifically, there are close to 300 complaints on file for 2018 and 2019 Accords with drivers reporting that the FCA may engage for no reason, leading to collisions and, in six instances, minor injuries. This can be a significant safety concern for drivers and passengers alike.
In addition to these issues, the 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid has had software recalls related to the rearview camera and body control modules. These recalls affected around one million notifications being sent to Honda owners, most of whom were driving Accords. The body control module controls pretty much every electrical feature in the car not tied directly to the engine, including windshield defrosters, wipers, interior and exterior lights, latches, locks, and switches. Between the BCM malfunctions and the rearview camera glitches, there's a lot that can go wrong.
Lastly, the 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid has had issues with the climate system, particularly the air conditioning. Some owners have reported that the air conditioning stopped working, with repairs costing up to $1200. This can be a significant inconvenience for drivers, especially during hot weather.
While these issues are concerning, it's important to note that the 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid is still a reliable and safe vehicle. Many of the Accords are known to reach 200,000 miles, and the 2018 Accord hybrid is known to reach upwards of 150,000 with regular maintenance. Potential buyers of the Accord hybrid should be wary of these issues but should not turn away from the vehicles as a point.
What is the most common problem with 2018 Honda Accord?
Software recalls are among the 2018 Accord's biggest concerns, with around a million notifications being sent for faulty rearview camera and body control modules. Overzealous forward collision avoidance has led to a still-open investigation, with Accords stopping in the middle of the street for no reason.
How reliable is Honda Accord Hybrid?
Quality and Reliability 80.0/100
The 2024 Honda Accord Hybrid has a predicted reliability score of 80 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
Why is my 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid not starting?
The most common reasons a Honda Accord won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

- Summary: I WAS SLOWLY PULLING INTO MY GARAGE TO PARK. WHEN I PRESSED ON THE PARKING BREAK, THE CAR REVVED TO FULL SPEED, SLAMMED INTO GARAGE AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE BRAKES, OR ANY ATTEMPT TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION OR TO CONTROL THE CAR, INCLUDING FAILURE OF THE AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING, FORWARD COLLISION OR PARKING COLLISION TO FUNCTION, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ALL TURNED ON. WHEN "PARK" WAS DEPRESSED, WITH THE ENGINE STILL REVVING AT A HIGH SPEED, THE CAR FLEW FULL SPEED INTO REVERSE INTO THE DRIVEWAY, SPUN IN A CIRCLE THEN FLEW THROUGH THE DRIVEWAY ELEVATED CONCRETE DIVIDER, THROUGH THE NEIGHBORS FENCE AND WAS STOPPED BY A LARGE BOULDER UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE WAS SMOKING AND REVVING AND DID NOT IMMEDIATELY STOP. THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG HAD DEPLOYED AND THE DOOR WAS JAMMED. I CRAWLED OUT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE NEIGHBOR INTO WHOSE YARD THE VEHICLE WENT, WITNESSED THE INCIDENT. ANOTHER NEIGHBOR RUSHED TO THE CAR WITH A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, DISCONNECTED ELECTRICAL WIRING AND SPRAYED THE ENGINE. THE CAR HAD GONE TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL. IT TOOK THE TOWING SERVICE 2 HOURS TO GET THE CAR OUT OF THE YARD. MY INSURANCE COMPANY DETERMINED THE CAR TO BE A TOTAL LOSS. RECENTLY, THE COLLISION CENTER WHERE THE CAR WAS EVENTUALLY TAKEN, COMPLETED AN ANALYSIS OF THE CAR'S COMPUTER AND DETERMINED THERE HAD BEEN MULTIPLE COMPUTER SYSTEM FAILURES LEADING TO THE CAR BECOMING UNCONTROLLABLE. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT SERIOUSLY INJURED. HAD THIS HAPPENED IN A BUSY AREA, THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH MORE DISASTROUS RESULT WITH DEATHS. THE POLICE ARRIVED BUT DID NOT FILE A POLICE REPORT AS THE INCIDENT WAS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND THERE WAS NO ONE SERIOUSLY INJURED.*DT *TR

- Summary: IN LESS THAN 5,000 MILES I'VE HAD 2 CRACKED WINDSHIELDS THAT SHOW NO SIGN OF PEBBLE OR STONE IMPACT AND CRACKED WHILE THE CAR WAS NOT BEING DRIVEN. BOTH CRACKS STARTED IN APPROX. THE SAME PLACE OF THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE PILLARS. EACH INSTANCE COSTS APPROX. $1400 TO REPLACE THE WINDSHIELD (INCLUDES CAMERA RECAL). YOU CAN FIND NUMEROUS INSTANCES ON THE INTERNET OF BASICALLY THE SAME THING HAPPENING TO OTHER ACCORD (AND HYBRIDS) OWNERS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT COULD AFFECT THE SAFETY SYSTEMS MOUNTED IN THE WINDSHIELD. EITHER THE GLASS IS SPECED WRONG OR DEFECTIVE OR THE DESIGN IS TORQUEING THE GLASS MORE THAN ITS DESIGNED TO HANDLE.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-01-13
- VIN: 1HGCV3F90JA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: OUR CAR'S BRAKE LIGHTS FAILED AT NIGHT IN ORLAND PARK, IL, LUCKILY ANOTHER DRIVER ALERTED US THAT THEY WERE UNLIT AND NOT OPERATING DURING BRAKING. WE ALSO NOTICED THE COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM HAD FAILED, CALLED OUR DEALER & BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR REPAIR THE NEXT MORNING (JAN. 14, 2019); WE RECEIVED A LOANER SINCE THIS WAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE (IT TOOK TWO DAYS FOR PARTS TO BE AVAILABLE). HONDA TOLD US THE BRAKE LIGHTS FAILED DUE TO A DEFECTIVE RADAR SENSOR. I HAVE CONTACTED HONDA SEVERAL TIMES TO URGE THEM TO FIX THIS BUG, AS BRAKE LIGHTS SHOULD ALWAYS WORK AND NOT BE CONTROLLED BY SOFTWARE. HONDA HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS SAFETY DEFECT NEEDS AN IMMEDIATE FIX, SO I AM DOCUMENTING IT SO THE US DOT CAN PRESSURE THEM TO FIX IT AS RAPIDLY AS POSSIBLE.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-22

WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-10-26
- VIN: 1HGCV3F51JA
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: WE PURCHASED OUR HONDA IN LATE OCT WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK OF OWNING IT WE HIT A SMALL POT HOLE WHILE TURNING LEFT ON A COUNTRY ROAD. WE WERE GOING FAIRLY SLOW BECAUSE WE WERE TURNING AND TWO TIRES ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BLEW OUT. THINKING THIS WAS JUST SOME WEIRD ONE TIME THING WE GOT BOTH TIRES REPLACED AND SADLY WITHIN THE NEXT MONTH WE BLEW 2 MORE TIRES BOTH TIRES ON PASSENGER SIDE AGAIN. THIS TIME WE WERE TRAVELING ABOUT 35 AND AS WE WERE ENTERING ONTO HWY COMING UP THE ON RAMP, WE HIT ANOTHER POTHOLE. NEITHER TIME WHEN THE TIRE BLEW DID WE ONLY BLOW ONE TIRE. IT IS STRANGE TO LOSE TWO TIRES AT THE SAME TIME ESPECIALLY MORE THAN ONCE . AFTER TALKING TO DEALER WE FOUND THAT THESE TIRES HAVE VERY THIN SIDEWALLS SO THEY WEIGH LESS. THEY SAID THIS IS TO HELP WITH GAS MILLAGE.MY CONCERN IS IF THIS HAPPENED AT HIGHER SPEEDS THIS COULD CAUSE CAR TO ROLL OR LOSE CONTROL. IN MY 40 PLUS YEARS OF DRIVING I HAVE NEVER EVEN LOST ONE TIRE DUE TO HITTING A POT HOLE PRIOR TO THIS VEHICLE. SO TO LOSE 4 TIRES WITHING A COUPLE MONTHS OF PURCHASE REALLY CONCERNS ME. WE HAVE UPGRADED OUR TIRES NOW TO THE THICKER SIDEWALLS BUT I WANTED TO LET OTHERS KNOW TO BE CAUTIOUS.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-12-23
- VIN: 1HGCV3F46JA
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: WHILE ACCELERATING ONTO A HIGHWAY BETWEEN 35 AND 60MPH, THIS VEHICLE OCCASIONALLY EXHIBITS A ROARING SOUND THAT CAN FOOL THE DRIVER INTO BELIEVING THAT A LARGE TRUCK HAS COME UPON THEM AND IS IMMEDIATELY TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER. THIS CREATED AN UNSAFE SITUATION IN MY CASE WHEN I TOOK MY EYES OFF THE ROAD AHEAD THE FIRST SEVERAL TIMES THE NOISE OCCURRED TO VISUALLY SEARCH THE SIDES FOR A CLOSELY APPROACHING VEHICLE THAT DID NOT ACTUALLY EXIST. HONDA HAS VERIFIED THIS ROARING NOISE PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE AS WELL AS NUMEROUS OTHER 2018 ACCORD HYBRIDS, BUT HAS FAILED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, INFORMING ME ONLY THAT THEY ARE "SEARCHING" FOR A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM. I AM USED TO THE ROARING NOISE NOW, AND KNOW WHEN TO EXPECT IT, BUT IF SOMEONE ELSE DRIVES MY CAR THEY WILL MORE THAN LIKELY REACT IN AN UNSAFE MANNER EXACTLY AS I DID DURING THE FIRST FEW NOISE OCCURRENCES.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-24
- VIN: 1HGCV3F46JA
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR SYSTEM (TPMS) NOT WORKING AS IT WAS INTENDED. I HAVE RECEIVED A WARNING INDICATION, WHEN DRIVING, THAT MY TIRE PRESSURE WAS LOW. I HAVE CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURE AND FOUND THAT IT WAS EXACTLY WHERE IT SHOULD BE. OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS MOST DISCONCERTING WHEN THIS OCCURS. IT HAPPENED THIS PAST WEEKEND. FORTUNATELY, I NOW CARRY A TIRE GAUGE AND WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT THE WARNING LIGHT WAS IN ERROR. I HAVE ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE WITH THE HONDA DEALERSHIP FROM WHICH I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW. OBVIOUSLY, THEIR "FIX" WAS NOT THE SOLUTION.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-02-25
- VIN: 1HGCV3F4XJA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I PURCHASED A NEW 2018 HONDA ACCORD HYBRID ON JUNE 30, 2018 FROM HONDA OF KIRKLAND FOR MY DAUGHTER. ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2019, WHEN SHE WAS DRIVING BACK FROM CLASS ON A ROAD AT 35 MPH, THE COLLISION MITIGATION SYSTEM BRAKE WARNING FLASHED THEN BRAKED IMMEDIATELY, STOPPING THE CAR IN TRAFFIC. NO OBSTACLES OR CARS WERE IN FRONT OF HER. FORTUNATELY, THE CARS BEHIND HER WERE FAR ENOUGH AWAY THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO STOP. IN ADDITION, SHE TRIED TO GET OUT OF THE WAY OF TRAFFIC BY PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT RESPOND FOR SEVERAL MOMENTS AFTER THE AUTOMATIC BRAKING OCCURRED. SHE ALSO TOLD ME THAT THE BRAKE WARNING HAD BEEN COMING ON OFTEN WHEN NOTHING WAS IN FRONT OF HER. IN ADDITION, THE LANE DEPARTURE FEATURE HAS BEEN MALFUNCTIONING, TRYING TO PULL HER TO THE LEFT LANE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC WHEN DRIVING ON CURVING ROADS. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE HONDA DEALERSHIP, BUT THE ONLY THING THEY FOUND WAS "A LITTLE DIRT" ON ONE OF THE SENSORS, STATING THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE HONDA SENSING SYSTEM. I HAVE FOUND CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS FILED AGAINST HONDA FOR FAULTY COLLISION MITIGATION SYSTEMS ON AT LEAST TWO OF THEIR MODELS (ACCORD & CRV). IN ADDITION, I HAVE FOUND PAGES OF RESULTS FOR THESE PROBLEMS WITH HONDA AND ACURA (HONDA CORPORATION) WHEN SIMPLY TYPING IN "COLLISION MITIGATION SYSTEM PROBLEMS". - Date Of Incident: 2019-01-24
- VIN: 1HGCV3F97JA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: ON MY WAY BACK TO HOME IN SAN DIEGO CA IN LATE JAN 2019 THE PANEL STARTED SHOWING WARNING SIGNS LIKE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT ON, ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL/ROAD DEPARTURE MITIGATION/LANE KEEPING ASSIST SYSTEM (LKAS) LIGHTS ARE ALL ON SAYING FAILURE. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME FOR MY AROUND 2000 MILES ACCORD HYBRID. THE FIRST TIME IT WAS ABLE TO RESOLVE BY RE-POWER ON THE CAR BUT SECOND TIME IT WAS COMPLETELY FAILED. THEN I WENT BACK TO DEALER THE OTHER DAY AND IT TURNED OUT THE MULTIPURPOSE CAMERA DID NOT WORK PROPERLY UNDER RAIN AND LOW TEMPERATURE (IT WAS JUST TYPICAL SAN DIEGO WINTER) SO THEY REPLACED ONE. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SINCE I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE REPORTED THE SAME ISSUE EVERYWHERE. AFTER THE REPLACEMENT THE AUTO-HIGHBEAM STARTED WORKING AS WELL, BEFORE I DIDNT EVEN KNOW IT WAS NOT WORKING. SAME WARNING SIGN LIKE THIS VIDEO: HTTPS://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=-_NFU2HPNGC

- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: HONDA ACCORD HYBRID 2018 WITH 7439 MILES. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY BACK HOME FROM WORK . SUDDENLY CAR STARTS TO FLUSH MESSAGES THAT ALL CAR SYSTEMS FAILS AND IT NEEDS TO BE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY. CAR STOPPED TO RESPONSE TO CONTROLS INCLUDING ACCELERATION AND STARTS TO SLOWS DOWN FROM 70 MPH TO 25 MPH. AT THAT TIME I REALIZED THAT THE ONLY OPTION WOULD BE TO PULL OVER ON THE SHOULDER. I DID IT TO BE ABLE TO STAY AWAY FROM TRAFFIC AND CALL EMERGENCY SERVICE. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 75 MINUTES I WAS TOWED AWAY TO NEARBY DEALERSHIP (MANCHESTER HONDA, CT). AS OF THIS MORNING I DON'T HAVE ANY INFORMATION FROM THEM. I WAS TOTALLY SHOCKED ON CAR BEHAVIOR AND THINK THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR CAR WITH 7439 MILES AND ONLY 7 MONTH OLD.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 103, "Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems" and number 111, "Rear Visibility" as well as FMVSS numbers 104, 108, 114, 118, and 305.
- Consequence: Various system malfunctions such as inoperative windshield wipers, defroster, rearview camera, or exterior lighting can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will update the BCM software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin February 22, 2021. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is X95.
