Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.

Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.

Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.

The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit is a popular subcompact car known for its practicality, affordability, and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Honda Fit owners:

  • Broken Front Door Armrest: Another common problem reported by Honda Fit owners is a broken front door armrest. This issue can happen due to wear and tear or excessive force on the armrest. The armrest may crack or break, which can be frustrating for drivers and passengers. This issue is most common in first-generation model years from 2007-2010 and can affect the car's resale value.
  • Moisture Damage to the Air-Fuel Sensor: Moisture damage to the air-fuel sensor is a common problem reported by Honda Fit owners. This issue can happen due to exposure to water, such as driving through deep puddles or heavy rain. When the air-fuel sensor gets wet, it can malfunction and cause the engine to run poorly or stall. The affected model years are 2007 and 2014 Fits.
  • Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coil failure is a relatively widespread issue among the 2007 to 2016 Honda Fit models. Once the ignition coil fails, it can lead to driveability issues like stalling, loss of power, and stuttering. Many owners had to replace their coil packs to address the issue.
  • Uncomfortable Seats: According to numerous reports, the Fit interior isn't a comfy place to be. Many drivers experienced neck and back pains due to flat and unsupportive seats. Some people had to buy seat cushions and headrests to address this problem.
  • Fuel Fill Door Doesn't Open: Owners of 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 Honda Fits complained that their fuel door refuses to open. This issue can be resolved by getting a revised fuel fill push lifter from Honda.
  • Transmission Problems: Some Honda Fit models, particularly the earlier ones (2007-2008), have experienced issues with the automatic transmission, such as harsh shifting or transmission failure.
  • Engine Problems: Issues such as excessive oil consumption and engine misfires have been reported, notably in the 2009-2013 models. The 2015 and 2016 models also faced recalls due to potential engine failures caused by connecting rod bolts that could loosen.
  • Water Leaks: Some Fits, especially in the 2009-2013 range, have been known to develop leaks into the interior, often due to issues with the door seals or the air conditioning system.
  • Suspension Issues: Complaints about premature wear of suspension components, such as shock absorbers and struts, have surfaced, especially in the 2007-2013 models.
  • Dashboard Warning Lights: The 2015-2016 models have had issues with various dashboard warning lights illuminating due to electrical power steering failure.

If you're experiencing any of these problems with your Honda Fit, it's important to get your car checked out by a certified mechanic as soon as possible. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

Is the Honda Fit a reliable car?

The Honda Fit Reliability Rating is 4.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 4th out of 21 for subcompact cars. The average annual repair cost is $390 which means it has excellent ownership costs. The severity of repairs is low while frequency of those issues is average, so major issues are uncommon for the Fit.

How long does a Honda Fit engine last?

With proper maintenance, a Honda Fit can last up to 200,000 to 300,000 miles without needing any major repairs. This translates to having a lifespan of 13 to 20 years. See also Front-Wheel Drive, Rear-Wheel Drive, or All-Wheel Drive?

Are Honda Fits expensive to fix?

A Honda Fit will cost about $4,915 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular hatchback models by $1,849. There is also a 14.68% chance that a Fit will require a major repair during that time.

Why did Honda stop making the Fit?

While the Honda Fit was a popular car for more than a decade, in the late 20-teens, sales started to decline. Eventually, Honda decided that it wasn't worth producing anymore. It should be noted, however, that the Honda Fit has remained in production in other countries; in many places, it's called the Honda Jazz.

  • VIN: 3HGGK5G87JM
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Check engine light with Code P219A. Honda dealer performed a cylinder A/F Imbalance test and recommended that the Fuel injectors be replaced. This appears to be a common problem with Honda Fits. The injectors are just as bad the recalled 30520-5R0-013 injectors. Honda claims the 2018 vehicles do not have those injectors. I beleive this vehicle has the same defective 30520-5R0-013 injectors.

Please help this get extended to the 2017 Honda fit because it is the same part and the same problem.
Honda Fit 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H67KM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: When it gets cold, the odometer/gas gauge intermittently glitches. It might come back on or it might stay blank. If you cannot read your mileage, you can’t get accurate repair service. If you cannot read your gas gauge, you could break down on the highway because you ran out of gas and did not know it. This problem seems to occur across Honda Fits ranging from 2015-2020 and even Honda CR-Vs from a Google search. A few people have found that it has something to do with loose soldering which leads to improper expansion? This needs to be investigated and covered under a recall. Most people wouldn’t be able to afford thousands of dollars.

  • Summary: It is part of the engine I do know what exactly it is the VTC and diagnosed through Honda at their Golden, Colorado location. Other car makes and models from them have recalls with these exact issues except mine but it is the exact same issue. This has been an ongoing issue since I bought the car back in 2017 but the car was finally able to consistently make the noise enough to be diagnosed.

  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Multiple systems failure simultaneously. Lane Keep assist system, adaptive cruise control, braking system failure and automatic emergency braking as well as forward collision warning. This appears to be due to some fault within the system that multiple owners experience — many mentions of this issue in online forums. When taken to Honda they cannot even determine why but just start suggesting replacement of various systems to include the camera/radar but cannot guarantee this will fix. This is a safety issue and happens through no fault of the vehicle owner it just pops on one day and remains intermittent.

Honda Fit 2019
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 3HGGK5H41KM
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: We just had the fuel injectors fail for the 2nd time on this car, which has about 85,000 miles on it. The fuel injectors were originally replaced in 2021 by the dealer and have once again failed according to the dealer’s diagnosis. Honda America’s extended warranty for some Fits for this same issue needs to be extended to other model years. It is unreasonable to have to replace fuel injectors twice within this short of a time span.

Latest negative Honda Fit car reviews

  1. Keshawn Muller 2025-04-14

    Vehicle year: 2011

I've been a Honda owner since 1985 and have owned 5 Hondas in that time. When I bought the Fit, I was hoping for the same great experience I had with my previous Hondas. However, I encountered some unexpected issues. For example, I learned that the blower motor for the heater/AC has a high ampage and can blow resistors, which unfortunately isn't covered under any warranty. Additionally, I found out that the fog lights on the sport model can be easily cracked by road debris and allow water in, which requires a costly replacement of $361 each just to pass inspection. Furthermore, the tires are an odd size that can be expensive and difficult to find. While there are some design flaws that need to be addressed, I still appreciate the overall quality of Honda vehicles.

  2. Jamie Kohler 2025-04-06

    Vehicle year: 2018

I was really hoping to love this car, but unfortunately it didn't work out. As a retiree on a budget, I needed a hatchback with plenty of cargo space, and the Honda Fit seemed like a good option since it was cheaper than other models like the VW Golf. However, during the test drive, I started experiencing excruciating pain in my back, legs, and hips after just 10 minutes of driving. I thought it was just me and my arthritis, but after doing some research, I found that many other people of all ages and sizes had similar complaints about the uncomfortable ride of the Fit. Additionally, the low chassis and small tires make it difficult to drive in even a small amount of snow, and the huge windshield often frosts over on the inside, leaving me shivering and waiting for the motor to warm up. Even the seat belt is uncomfortable, requiring me to swivel in my seat and clip it too close to my hip. All in all, I've nicknamed this car The Iron Maiden due to the pain it causes me. Despite all this, I'm still grateful for the cargo space it provides.

  3. Ford Gaylord 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2017

Despite being only 2 years old and having 45k miles, my Honda FIT required $2000 worth of work due to faulty injectors. As a Honda owner, I expect better reliability and performance from my vehicle. This experience has left me disappointed and frustrated.

  4. Lee Russel 2025-03-18

    Vehicle year: 2013

I purchased this vehicle for its cargo space and bare bones nature. I chose Honda for their reputation of producing high-quality small cars. So far, maintenance has only required routine oil changes and one set of tires, and at 29,000 miles, the vehicle is barely broken in. However, another reviewer mentioned having to replace the A/C in their Fit before 30,000 miles, and I am currently replacing my A/C compressor in my '11 Civic with 59,000 miles. This could be a potential issue with Honda, as these parts should not need replacing so soon. My main concern with this vehicle is its fuel economy. I expect a small vehicle like this to achieve 35-43 mpg, especially when SUVs are starting to exceed 30 mpg. Despite using only ethanol-free fuel, which provides a slight bump in fuel economy, I still only get 34-36 mpg on my daily commute, which is mostly highway driving at 60 mph. I should note that I drive conservatively, utilizing drafting and coasting as much as possible. On long drives of over 2 hours, I have achieved 42.1 mpg while traveling between 55 and 60 mph. However, this car consumes more fuel at speeds exceeding 65 mph, and during the winter, the MPG drops drastically, likely due to the quality of fuel and cold temperatures in NY. I tend to average 29-32 mpg during the winter. Acceleration is not the car's strong suit, so passing a slower vehicle on a one-lane road at 55 mph is not recommended unless you have a mile to do it. I have not driven the newer 130 hp Fit (2016), but I imagine that the additional 13 hp makes a significant difference. Lastly, I have noticed that the paint on Honda vehicles tends to chip easily, so I make sure to leave large gaps between me and the car in front to avoid this issue.I've read many reviews where people complain about this car, but I want to share my experience. The average fuel economy display is one of the greatest features. Although I still calculate manually with each fill up, it's nice to have an idea of how you're doing. It has caused me to drive much slower in a continuing effort to beat my 'high score'. I also love the windows as there are almost zero blind spots. I call this vehicle the fish bowl because you have more window than car. Although there's nothing particularly impressive about this car, I had the armrest installed in mine and switched out all the lights, except headlights, for Cree LED lights solely because the outdated incandescent draws too much power and lacks brightness. The heater during the winter takes 10 minutes to warm up, so I'm usually close to reaching my destination before I have substantial heat. I installed a trailer hitch on mine and pull a small 4' x 8' trailer from time to time to the hardware store, which makes the vehicle incredibly more useful. Some reviewers have commented about sway while operating in windy conditions. This vehicle will travel wherever the wind blows. It is a constant fight to keep it straight, which should be obvious due to the bubble design and light weight. Snow handling is great. I drive in NY state's snow belt and I'm often fighting icy/snowy roads. The stock, narrow, wheel rims give you excellent traction. I haven't needed snow tires as an all-season has worked just fine up to this point. One downside is the road clearance. I often bottom out on snowy roads and always risk the possibility of getting stuck. Car seats are difficult to get in the vehicle and deal with, but this tends to be the case with all compacts and subcompact cars.

The car was great until the repairs started coming up. Unfortunately, the fog lights had zero protection and both were broken by stones at 15k miles, costing $180 EACH to replace. At 22,685 miles, I had to replace the A/C condenser for $900 due to 'road debris,' which was not covered under warranty. It is disappointing to see that this is a common problem caused by defective design, with huge holes in the lower grille allowing large stones or debris to pass through, and the low clearance making the condenser extremely vulnerable to damage. A recall from Honda would be a great solution to this problem. However, they deny there is a problem and stick their customers with the expense. This experience is unfortunate, especially since it was my last Honda.

I bought my 2015 Fit LX in mid-August 2014 and it was a great upgrade from my Toyota Corolla. While there was nothing wrong with the Toyota, it was more of an appliance than a car. The Fit, on the other hand, is a pleasure to drive. Even with a CVT transmission, it is still quick, responsive and fun to drive. The car holds the road better than you would expect for an economy car, and it has a composed and compliant ride for its size. Everyone who has seen the Fit is impressed with how spacious it is inside compared to its exterior dimensions. I have had no issues with the car, except for a deer hitting the passenger side at 60 MPH. I have done my oil changes myself, which is fairly easy, even though you need to remove the engine splash pan to get to the drain and filter. I travel 110 miles each day to work and back home, and my average MPG has ranged from 42 to 45.5 in all kinds of weather, with the A/C both on and off. My friends with hybrids can't believe the mileage I get, and the cost of the car was nowhere near what they paid. As for front seat comfort, I have no complaints. I spend almost three hours each day in the Fit, and at no time find myself uncomfortable. Overall, I am extremely happy with my decision to go with a Fit, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good blend of economy, performance and utility in a small package. UPDATE: In August 2017, I sold the Honda Fit to my son. He is a college student, so we took a small down payment and let him assume the monthly payments. He is a big guy, about 6'2Oil changes take less than half an hour, and doing it ourselves ensures it is done correctly. Overall, this car has been a great investment and very reliable.

The low fuel light on the fuel system turns on when there is only 25% fuel remaining. When the light illuminates, I can only fill up to approximately 8.2 gallons. To avoid running out of fuel, I decided to carry a couple of gallons with me. When the light came on, I reset the tripometer and continued driving until it registered 33 miles. At this point, the gas gauge indicator had no bars and the 'miles to empty' read zero. I continued driving until the tripometer displayed 105 miles, at which point I filled up with 10.55 gallons. This confirms that the fuel tank has a capacity of 10.6 gallons and that the 'low fuel' indicator illuminates when there is approximately 25% fuel remaining. However, the fuel gauge and 'miles to empty' readings are not accurate. Despite this, I am averaging over 43 mpg with a 6-speed manual. Since purchasing the vehicle new in October 2015, I have put on 20,000 miles as of June 2016. Recently, I noticed a slight pull to the left and took the car to the dealer for an alignment. They corrected a minor caster and toe discrepancy. Although I am still not satisfied with the fuel system indicator and remaining fuel readings, I reset the tripometer when the low fuel indicator illuminates since I know I have over 100 miles remaining even though the display shows 32 miles to empty. I also installed a trailer hitch and towed a 6x12 landscape trailer loaded with small trees for 700 miles, achieving 22 mpg. Under normal road conditions, I achieve 43 mpg at 68 miles per hour and 35 mpg at 80 miles per hour. As of December 2016, I have achieved 53 mpg for a few hundred miles, mostly rural driving as indicated on the mpg display. I also hauled a grandfather clock with a flat rear section and the passenger seat folded down. The OEM Firestone tires will need to be replaced before 40,000 miles, as they currently have 3/32 tread remaining at 30,000 miles. I have not experienced any other issues.

I've owned my Fit for over 7 years and I still love it! In the city, I get about 25mpg and on the highway, I get high 30's. My wife tends to have a lead foot, so she gets about 2-3 mpg less. I recently replaced the front brake pads at 60K, but other than that, I've had no problems. Regular maintenance is all it takes to keep this car going strong! It's important to use a Top Tier gas as recommended by Honda to avoid any issues. While this vehicle may not ride like a Lexus or Cadillac, it suits my needs perfectly. I've been using synthetic oil (Mobil 1) since the first oil change and it's been great. The carpet is a bit on the cheap side and I had to replace it once under warranty due to wear, but it's wearing out again around the driver's heel pad. I've only done the required maintenance and had to replace the tires at 42K, which isn't bad for OEM Dunlop's. I replaced them with Michelin's and it made the car handle better and drive more smoothly. The battery lasted 6 years before needing replacement. Overall, my Fit runs like a finely tuned sewing machine! Just remember to change the oil/filters, rotate tires/alignment, and do the maintenance that the Maintenance Minder tells you to do.

This is a great car and I love it! The room in the back with the seats folded down is amazing, and with the seats up, the rear seat passenger room is great. The gas mileage is also terrific. I always get 41 to 45. Have never got below 41! My only complaints are that the floor covering is very cheap and that 6th gear should be higher. The engine is doing too many RPM's at highway speed. Overall, I highly recommend it!

I have just purchased my third Honda Fit Sport, another 2013 model with 64K miles on the clock. This was after my previous 2013 Fit Sport was involved in a collision with a deer at 60mph. Despite the severity of the accident, I emerged without a scratch, and the car's cabin integrity remained uncompromised. Although the car was declared a total loss by my insurance company, I was able to drive it for three miles after the collision. My first Honda Fit Sport was an automatic, which I gave to my daughter with 110K miles on it. She has since driven it for an additional 37K miles, and the only major repair it required was a water pump replacement. The 2013 models I purchased were equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, which I find to be a significant improvement over the automatic version. The manual transmission allows me to perfectly match the engine's output, resulting in a more engaging driving experience. The Honda Fit Sport is an excellent car that offers exceptional value for money. It is reliable, fuel-efficient, and makes great use of space. Although there are more powerful and refined cars available, few can match the Fit's reliability and overall value. If Honda were to produce an 'Si' version of the Fit with stronger brakes and lumbar-adjustable seats, it would be the perfect car for me. However, even without these features, the Fit is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a fun-to-drive, reliable, and practical car.In 2013, I installed a cold air intake and have a cat back performance exhaust on order. My plan is to build my own 'SI' and enjoy every mile driving it. As of December 2020, my Fit has 102,000 miles and is still on its first set of brakes. Other than gas, tire rotations, and regular oil changes, it has needed nothing. I am confident in the reliability of the Fit and will continue to buy it. Even when pushed hard driving from Jersey to Delaware on the Turnpike at 'generous' speed, it regularly returns 32mpg. I plan to drive it until the wheels fall off.My 2009 Honda Fit Sport (automatic) has served me well with 167,000 miles and still serves as a daily commuting car for my wife while she parks her more gas-guzzling Pilot. I am confident in my decision to continue using this reliable car, but I am also aware of the small rust bubble that has appeared at the edge of my left rear fender well. As a true Honda Fit enthusiast, I am disappointed that Honda has stopped making this model. I am determined to find another 5-speed, lower mileage Fit as a replacement and will not settle for an SUV or automatic.
