Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.
Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.
Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.
The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common Honda Fit problems
The Honda Fit is a popular subcompact car known for its practicality, affordability, and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Honda Fit owners:
- Broken Front Door Armrest: Another common problem reported by Honda Fit owners is a broken front door armrest. This issue can happen due to wear and tear or excessive force on the armrest. The armrest may crack or break, which can be frustrating for drivers and passengers. This issue is most common in first-generation model years from 2007-2010 and can affect the car's resale value.
- Moisture Damage to the Air-Fuel Sensor: Moisture damage to the air-fuel sensor is a common problem reported by Honda Fit owners. This issue can happen due to exposure to water, such as driving through deep puddles or heavy rain. When the air-fuel sensor gets wet, it can malfunction and cause the engine to run poorly or stall. The affected model years are 2007 and 2014 Fits.
- Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coil failure is a relatively widespread issue among the 2007 to 2016 Honda Fit models. Once the ignition coil fails, it can lead to driveability issues like stalling, loss of power, and stuttering. Many owners had to replace their coil packs to address the issue.
- Uncomfortable Seats: According to numerous reports, the Fit interior isn't a comfy place to be. Many drivers experienced neck and back pains due to flat and unsupportive seats. Some people had to buy seat cushions and headrests to address this problem.
- Fuel Fill Door Doesn't Open: Owners of 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 Honda Fits complained that their fuel door refuses to open. This issue can be resolved by getting a revised fuel fill push lifter from Honda.
- Transmission Problems: Some Honda Fit models, particularly the earlier ones (2007-2008), have experienced issues with the automatic transmission, such as harsh shifting or transmission failure.
- Engine Problems: Issues such as excessive oil consumption and engine misfires have been reported, notably in the 2009-2013 models. The 2015 and 2016 models also faced recalls due to potential engine failures caused by connecting rod bolts that could loosen.
- Water Leaks: Some Fits, especially in the 2009-2013 range, have been known to develop leaks into the interior, often due to issues with the door seals or the air conditioning system.
- Suspension Issues: Complaints about premature wear of suspension components, such as shock absorbers and struts, have surfaced, especially in the 2007-2013 models.
- Dashboard Warning Lights: The 2015-2016 models have had issues with various dashboard warning lights illuminating due to electrical power steering failure.
If you're experiencing any of these problems with your Honda Fit, it's important to get your car checked out by a certified mechanic as soon as possible. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.
Is the Honda Fit a reliable car?
The Honda Fit Reliability Rating is 4.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 4th out of 21 for subcompact cars. The average annual repair cost is $390 which means it has excellent ownership costs. The severity of repairs is low while frequency of those issues is average, so major issues are uncommon for the Fit.
How long does a Honda Fit engine last?
With proper maintenance, a Honda Fit can last up to 200,000 to 300,000 miles without needing any major repairs. This translates to having a lifespan of 13 to 20 years. See also Front-Wheel Drive, Rear-Wheel Drive, or All-Wheel Drive?
Are Honda Fits expensive to fix?
A Honda Fit will cost about $4,915 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular hatchback models by $1,849. There is also a 14.68% chance that a Fit will require a major repair during that time.
Why did Honda stop making the Fit?
While the Honda Fit was a popular car for more than a decade, in the late 20-teens, sales started to decline. Eventually, Honda decided that it wasn't worth producing anymore. It should be noted, however, that the Honda Fit has remained in production in other countries; in many places, it's called the Honda Jazz.

- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Check engine light with Code P219A. Honda dealer performed a cylinder A/F Imbalance test and recommended that the Fuel injectors be replaced. This appears to be a common problem with Honda Fits. The injectors are just as bad the recalled 30520-5R0-013 injectors. Honda claims the 2018 vehicles do not have those injectors. I beleive this vehicle has the same defective 30520-5R0-013 injectors.

Please help this get extended to the 2017 Honda fit because it is the same part and the same problem.
Honda Fit 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
- VIN: 3HGGK5H67KM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When it gets cold, the odometer/gas gauge intermittently glitches. It might come back on or it might stay blank. If you cannot read your mileage, you can’t get accurate repair service. If you cannot read your gas gauge, you could break down on the highway because you ran out of gas and did not know it. This problem seems to occur across Honda Fits ranging from 2015-2020 and even Honda CR-Vs from a Google search. A few people have found that it has something to do with loose soldering which leads to improper expansion? This needs to be investigated and covered under a recall. Most people wouldn’t be able to afford thousands of dollars.

Other car makes and models from them have recalls with these exact issues except mine but it is the exact same issue. This has been an ongoing issue since I bought the car back in 2017 but the car was finally able to consistently make the noise enough to be diagnosed.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Multiple systems failure simultaneously. Lane Keep assist system, adaptive cruise control, braking system failure and automatic emergency braking as well as forward collision warning. This appears to be due to some fault within the system that multiple owners experience — many mentions of this issue in online forums. When taken to Honda they cannot even determine why but just start suggesting replacement of various systems to include the camera/radar but cannot guarantee this will fix. This is a safety issue and happens through no fault of the vehicle owner it just pops on one day and remains intermittent.

Honda Fit 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
- VIN: 3HGGK5H41KM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: We just had the fuel injectors fail for the 2nd time on this car, which has about 85,000 miles on it. The fuel injectors were originally replaced in 2021 by the dealer and have once again failed according to the dealer’s diagnosis. Honda America’s extended warranty for some Fits for this same issue needs to be extended to other model years. It is unreasonable to have to replace fuel injectors twice within this short of a time span.

My wife and I owned a 2008 Fit while living abroad in Europe. When we moved back to the States, we decided to purchase another Fit. I must say, for a compact car, Honda really managed to pack a lot into this vehicle without making it seem overdone. The fit and finish are quite nice, along with the overall design. This car is practical, very lively to drive (especially with the stick), and incredibly fuel-efficient, with 36 highway and 33 in town. Even at 6'6

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2016 Fit after owning it for two years. Out of all the cars I've owned (five since I turned sixteen), this one suits me the best. Even though I drive about 25,000 miles a year between all three of my cars, the Fit has held up the best. I bought it brand new after working insane hours to buy it in cash straight out. I drive aggressively, yet safely, and have put this car to the test in the most extreme conditions anybody should drive in. I've taken countless road trips, but the most challenging one for the car and I was a round trip from Washington to Arizona and back, where temperatures hit nearly 122 degrees. The car performed great, with no problems, and a consistent 45-50 mpg's. Although it's not a fast car, it drives like a Honda should. The audio system is more than satisfactory, with a lot of bass and clarity. Rear leg room is incredible, although I believe part of that is because the drivers seat feels cramped. Take that with a grain of salt though, because I am 6'4I stopped going there because I was so tired of them. However, I must say that the storage is great, and the car has never failed me.

Vehicle year: 2016
I recently had the pleasure of reviewing the 2016 Honda Fit EX and I must say, it did not disappoint. In comparison to our 2009 Subaru Impreza and other vehicles we've owned, the Fit EX stands out. We were pleasantly surprised by the combined 38MPG, with highway driving around 44MPG, and city driving around 34MPG. The ride is comfortable and the seats and interior room are very spacious and comfortable (Far superior than our Subaru). The interior quality is also very good. Road noise is surprisingly quieter compared to our Subaru, however, there's no missing it when you hit a pothole or bump in the road. The wind noise in the Fit is virtually undetectable even at highway speeds of up to 65mph (great job Honda). We were very pleased with the interior trim and build quality. The electronics/entertainment isn't top notch but it's satisfactory. Exterior visibility is comparable to other vehicles, with an advantage to rear visibility. The back up camera & lane watch camera are definitely a wonderful feature, but not a requirement because of the nice large side mirrors and rear visibility. Acceleration is more than adequate for rapid acceleration onto highways or when needed, & we've not been disappointed at all. We highly recommend the Honda Fit EX. However, there are a few minor cons to consider. The intermittent wipers have no variable setting and the ride is slightly firm, with potholes or large bumps in the road being very noticeable. The long distance illumination is very good with high beams, however, because the fog lights and low beam lights turn off, it causes the immediate road area to become rather dimly lit. I'm planning on easily fixing this issue by adding an additional set of LED driving lights to come on only when the high beam lights are on. (Low beam illumination is excellent). The audio system is good, but it lacks a little on the low end bass. (Not bad, just not quite enough bass). Engine noise does become apparent when accelerating hard, but not much more than other cars do. Furthermore, once up to speed, the engine noise is not at all any worse than other cars. One thing to note is that the '2015' Honda Fit models were made in Mexico and had some quality issues due to an inexperienced workforce. However, the '2016' Honda Fit models are now made in Japan and the build quality is noticeably better. If you're in the market for a Honda or already own one, you can check where it was made by looking at the first digit of the VIN#. 1 = USA, 2 = Canada, 3 = Mexico, J = Japan. Additionally, I have to admit that when my wife initially suggested this vehicle, I specifically remember telling her 'Are you crazy?! We'll be sitting on each other's lap whenever we go anywhere.' Now, I recant that statement to tell you that this car is surprisingly roomy inside, and you need to try one to realize it; don't judge it by how small it looks from the outside. Lastly, I wanted to share that I've managed to squeeze 48MPG by driving conscientiously, and I also discovered a feature I hadn't been told about - the rear passenger seats have a two-position reclining option. We still love this car, and the only new downside would be some disappointment with the Radio Head Unit.Don't get me wrong, the Head Unit is good and serves its purpose. However, I am disappointed with its lack of mirroring compatibility for android phones and the inability to add additional apps, such as Google Maps. Although the head unit has GPS actively built into it and is capable, Honda has locked it to prevent owners from utilizing it with other apps. I understand that Honda wants us to buy their map program, but it's ridiculously expensive. Update: 12-15-18 We absolutely love this car. The newest issue we faced was that it failed to pass state inspection at just under 50k miles due to a rear shock leaking. Fortunately, we purchased the extended warranty and it was covered 100%. Otherwise, it would have cost us $600+ dollars to replace both rear shocks.

Your car sounds like a great ride! It's cheap, starts every time, and is fun to drive in corners. Even better, it's really spacious for its size. While it may not be the fastest or the coolest car out there, it's definitely the best car you've ever owned.

Vehicle year: 2013
@172,000 I didn't drive it much this past year, but there's nothing wrong with it. I just love this car and gave it to my daughter to learn on. She'll be the third new driver for the old girl! Hahaha. It'll be a sad day when we have to part ways. I wish Honda still made this car. It's such a great and dependable car! @165,000 miles, I hope they start making them again. My Fit has definitely changed my mind from the beginning. I have a Sienna XLE and a Camry, but hands down, the Fit is my favorite. I'll never buy another Toyota - they're too noisy and too expensive to maintain. The Fit is easy to maintain and easy to drive, although I still don't like it as a highway car. When I first bought this car, I took it back to the dealer because I thought the steering had a flaw. It was just the wind. It's very light and really gets pushed around on the road. We took it from Ohio to Virginia this summer, and it wasn't the best trip. It's just not built for speeds over 55. I'm not a fan of the van-like mirrors in the front - they create a blind spot. Also, there is a common issue with a terrible smell in the ventilation system of these Fits. Overall, the storage is great, and the MPG is better than advertised. I haven't had any mechanical issues. We bought it for my wife to learn to drive, but I wouldn't suggest it as a first car, especially with the blind spot created by the van-like mirrors and the uncomfortable headrests. Update at 72,000: I switched from Hankooks to General Altimax tires, and the handling and ride are much better. There's nothing really wrong with the car. I'd say it's a very good city car. I don't much care for having to change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles, and the road noise can be a little aggravating, but it's a cheap ride with good gas mileage. Update at 90,000: I really wouldn't buy this car again. Those small windows in the front are hazardous, creating a huge blind spot. Also, it's just too light and small for the highways. The car has some minor issues such as low beam headlights and road noise, but overall it's a great city car with good gas mileage and storage. The front seats are surprisingly spacious for a car of its size. It may struggle to seat 5 people and use the AC at the same time due to lack of power, but it's a reliable and affordable option for transportation. The car performs well in snow and other difficult road conditions. Some improvements have been made such as valve adjustment and throttle cleaning, which have resulted in better performance. The defrost smell can be reduced by turning on the defrost and heat for the last couple of miles of a trip. The headrests have been removed for better visibility and comfort. The car has had some minor repairs such as replacing a stabilizer bar bearing and changing the transmission fluid, but overall it has been dependable. Despite some wear and tear from driving in harsh conditions, the car has held up well. This little Fit is surprisingly durable and has held up well. Although I wouldn't take it on a long trip, it's a great car for getting around town. I'm happy with my purchase and would consider buying it again in similar circumstances. I'll provide an update next year! As of 4-12-19 @ 118,000 miles, it's still running strong and the tires look good. It's a good value for the money, and I find it more comfortable without the headrests. While it's not ideal for highway driving, it's been a dependable and affordable car to operate. I recently replaced the rear shocks at almost 140,000 miles and fixed a problem with hard braking when it was cold by installing a new brake booster check valve. Overall, I'm satisfied with my purchase and would recommend it. Although the van-like mirrors take some getting used to, it has more room than you'd expect. My wife, son, and daughter all love the car, so I expect it will continue to be our go-to car for running errands around town. It has definitely grown on me, and it still looks good despite the harsh weather conditions in NE Ohio.

The 2018 Fit is a small and easy-to-park car. However, the back-up camera does not have sound to alert you, and the inside of the car does not defrost all the way even with heat on full blast. This can be unsafe while driving because your windows remain fogged up. We have found that rolling the windows down helps to see while driving. Additionally, the front windshield does not fully defrost either. On the bright side, this car is good on gas. Overall, while I would not recommend it to everyone, it may still be a good fit for some drivers.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my FIT. I've been garaging it nightly and on weekends in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, I recently had an issue with my driver's side rear door. After locking it, I couldn't get it to open with the key, door pull, outside handle, or inside handle. I ended up having to pay $465 to have the door forced open and the entire lock/motor mechanism replaced due to severe rusting on the mechanism. It's got me thinking about the recent recalls for SRS Air bag failure due to water and the more recent drivers door electrical switches for water shorting. I'm wondering if there are leaks in the doors. I'm now concerned that the other 3 doors may need lock replacements. Have any of you had similar issues with your Fit? If so, it may be worth checking or asking about severe rusting as a cause. Thanks for your help!

Hi there! We have had a great experience with two new Civic manual trans for 12 years each without any issues. However, we did have a few minor problems with our Fit, including a wire harness recall, a starter motor replacement at 34,000 miles, and a broken front axle and manual transmission replacement at 39,000 miles. We have lived in the same place since 1984 and have had the same driving conditions and average miles per year. The Fit is a relatively new model, and its reliability has not been fully tested until now. We are excited to see if the car lives up to Honda's reputation!

This is a nice car, but the frame around the windshield creates a huge blind spot for the driver, which is my only issue with it. I have had some trouble with the navigation system since I got the car in December 2017. The graphics were wonderful at first, but now the map is not very helpful. I was told that I have a Here system, not a Garmin navi, but I had a loaner car, a 2018 Fit Navi with a Here system, and it had a similar system to Garmin. It took two days to get a new tire, by the way. I am disappointed that the dealer or Honda will not help me with my navigation, but I suppose I could just buy a Garmin if I want reliable navigation.

In summary, I recommend checking out consumer reports reviews for driver assist features, particularly for Honda vehicles. Unfortunately, my personal experience with the emergency braking system on my 2018 Fit EX was not positive. The CMBS malfunctioned on the highway, causing the brakes to engage despite the road being clear. The dealer informed me that this was a normal occurrence and that the system could not be permanently disabled. While they suggested turning it off every time I start the car, this seemed like an accident waiting to happen. Ultimately, I decided to trade in the car, despite taking a financial hit, as I was not willing to risk serious injury with such a flawed system. I hope that Honda will take steps to address these issues and provide a safer driving experience for their customers.
