Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.
Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.
Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.
The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common Honda Fit problems
The Honda Fit is a popular subcompact car known for its practicality, affordability, and fuel efficiency. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by Honda Fit owners:
- Broken Front Door Armrest: Another common problem reported by Honda Fit owners is a broken front door armrest. This issue can happen due to wear and tear or excessive force on the armrest. The armrest may crack or break, which can be frustrating for drivers and passengers. This issue is most common in first-generation model years from 2007-2010 and can affect the car's resale value.
- Moisture Damage to the Air-Fuel Sensor: Moisture damage to the air-fuel sensor is a common problem reported by Honda Fit owners. This issue can happen due to exposure to water, such as driving through deep puddles or heavy rain. When the air-fuel sensor gets wet, it can malfunction and cause the engine to run poorly or stall. The affected model years are 2007 and 2014 Fits.
- Ignition Coil Failure: Ignition coil failure is a relatively widespread issue among the 2007 to 2016 Honda Fit models. Once the ignition coil fails, it can lead to driveability issues like stalling, loss of power, and stuttering. Many owners had to replace their coil packs to address the issue.
- Uncomfortable Seats: According to numerous reports, the Fit interior isn't a comfy place to be. Many drivers experienced neck and back pains due to flat and unsupportive seats. Some people had to buy seat cushions and headrests to address this problem.
- Fuel Fill Door Doesn't Open: Owners of 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 Honda Fits complained that their fuel door refuses to open. This issue can be resolved by getting a revised fuel fill push lifter from Honda.
- Transmission Problems: Some Honda Fit models, particularly the earlier ones (2007-2008), have experienced issues with the automatic transmission, such as harsh shifting or transmission failure.
- Engine Problems: Issues such as excessive oil consumption and engine misfires have been reported, notably in the 2009-2013 models. The 2015 and 2016 models also faced recalls due to potential engine failures caused by connecting rod bolts that could loosen.
- Water Leaks: Some Fits, especially in the 2009-2013 range, have been known to develop leaks into the interior, often due to issues with the door seals or the air conditioning system.
- Suspension Issues: Complaints about premature wear of suspension components, such as shock absorbers and struts, have surfaced, especially in the 2007-2013 models.
- Dashboard Warning Lights: The 2015-2016 models have had issues with various dashboard warning lights illuminating due to electrical power steering failure.
If you're experiencing any of these problems with your Honda Fit, it's important to get your car checked out by a certified mechanic as soon as possible. Regular maintenance and inspections can also help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.
Is the Honda Fit a reliable car?
The Honda Fit Reliability Rating is 4.5 out of 5.0, which ranks it 4th out of 21 for subcompact cars. The average annual repair cost is $390 which means it has excellent ownership costs. The severity of repairs is low while frequency of those issues is average, so major issues are uncommon for the Fit.
How long does a Honda Fit engine last?
With proper maintenance, a Honda Fit can last up to 200,000 to 300,000 miles without needing any major repairs. This translates to having a lifespan of 13 to 20 years. See also Front-Wheel Drive, Rear-Wheel Drive, or All-Wheel Drive?
Are Honda Fits expensive to fix?
A Honda Fit will cost about $4,915 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular hatchback models by $1,849. There is also a 14.68% chance that a Fit will require a major repair during that time.
Why did Honda stop making the Fit?
While the Honda Fit was a popular car for more than a decade, in the late 20-teens, sales started to decline. Eventually, Honda decided that it wasn't worth producing anymore. It should be noted, however, that the Honda Fit has remained in production in other countries; in many places, it's called the Honda Jazz.

- VIN: 3HGGK5G87JM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Check engine light with Code P219A. Honda dealer performed a cylinder A/F Imbalance test and recommended that the Fuel injectors be replaced. This appears to be a common problem with Honda Fits. The injectors are just as bad the recalled 30520-5R0-013 injectors. Honda claims the 2018 vehicles do not have those injectors. I beleive this vehicle has the same defective 30520-5R0-013 injectors.

Please help this get extended to the 2017 Honda fit because it is the same part and the same problem.
Honda Fit 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
- VIN: 3HGGK5H67KM
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: When it gets cold, the odometer/gas gauge intermittently glitches. It might come back on or it might stay blank. If you cannot read your mileage, you can’t get accurate repair service. If you cannot read your gas gauge, you could break down on the highway because you ran out of gas and did not know it. This problem seems to occur across Honda Fits ranging from 2015-2020 and even Honda CR-Vs from a Google search. A few people have found that it has something to do with loose soldering which leads to improper expansion? This needs to be investigated and covered under a recall. Most people wouldn’t be able to afford thousands of dollars.

Other car makes and models from them have recalls with these exact issues except mine but it is the exact same issue. This has been an ongoing issue since I bought the car back in 2017 but the car was finally able to consistently make the noise enough to be diagnosed.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Multiple systems failure simultaneously. Lane Keep assist system, adaptive cruise control, braking system failure and automatic emergency braking as well as forward collision warning. This appears to be due to some fault within the system that multiple owners experience — many mentions of this issue in online forums. When taken to Honda they cannot even determine why but just start suggesting replacement of various systems to include the camera/radar but cannot guarantee this will fix. This is a safety issue and happens through no fault of the vehicle owner it just pops on one day and remains intermittent.

Honda Fit 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-23
- VIN: 3HGGK5H41KM
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: We just had the fuel injectors fail for the 2nd time on this car, which has about 85,000 miles on it. The fuel injectors were originally replaced in 2021 by the dealer and have once again failed according to the dealer’s diagnosis. Honda America’s extended warranty for some Fits for this same issue needs to be extended to other model years. It is unreasonable to have to replace fuel injectors twice within this short of a time span.

Vehicle year: 2013
Last year, I was in the market for a roomy, efficient, and compact vehicle. I ended up buying a Patriot over the Fit because of its power, space, and SUV benefits. However, I eventually traded in the Jeep to gain MPG benefits and save a few bucks on payments. I couldn't be happier with my decision! I've been wanting a manual again since my first vehicle years ago, and I'm very glad I switched back to a 5spd. The MPG is much better and on par with my old Corolla. I was initially concerned about highway performance due to the lack of a 6th gear and the car's small size, but the highway tracking and noise levels are great for the class. The build quality is excellent, the interior is functional, and the exterior styling is nice with the Sport trim. Overall, it's a great value!

Vehicle year: 2015
I recently traded in my 2014 CR-V for a 2015 Fit on a bit of an impulse. The Fit had a $1500 discount and the dealer gave me the maximum blue book value for my CR-V. I wanted a manual shift car again, so I went for it. I've had the car for a month now and driven 3000 miles. Since it's just my wife and me, the Fit is perfect for our needs. It has plenty of room for my commute to work and doesn't feel cramped at all. I'm only 5'8'' so I have plenty of space, but a taller friend of mine did mention feeling a bit cramped in the front passenger seat. I drive 32 miles each way to work, with some stop-and-go traffic, and have been averaging 38mpg. Recently, my wife and I took a 1200 mile round trip from Michigan to Iowa and found the car to be very comfortable for the long journey. We carried a lot of gifts, the dog's crate, a small wooden baby cradle, luggage, etc, with no problem. The Fit has plenty of room! My wife also found it easy to get in and out of, and she loves the seats, which she finds much more comfortable than those in my old CR-V. The wind noise is at least as quiet as my CR-V was, and although I can hear the engine at 70-75mph (3500rpm), it's a pleasing sound to me, not annoying. We even drove the Fit through some pretty nasty snow and ice conditions in Cedar Rapids and it handled better than I thought it would. The only thing I don't like is that, like almost everyone else, I wish the radio had a knob for volume.Getting in the car at 5 in the morning can be a bit of a challenge, especially when the radio comes on at ear bleed volume where you left it the night before. It's not always easy to turn it down quickly without waking the neighbors, but we've all been there! Occasionally, restarting the car after a stop can cause some issues with the iPhone and the Pandora/iPod function, but most times Pandora (or Tunein, or anything else that was playing when you stopped the car) restarts playing with no problems. If you do encounter any issues, simply unplug the phone and plug it back in before it'll play again. The car also seems to fog up easier than the CR-V did, so you may need to use the defrost setting more than you're used to. However, the Bluetooth phone functions flawlessly. On the plus side, the car is really fun to drive. The six-speed shifter is short throw and precise, and the engine revs freely and pulls nicely. It's not a racer by any means, but it isn't slow either. Highway on-ramps are fun again! Overall, I really enjoy driving it. I also had great service experiences at Page Honda in Bloomfield Hills, MI where I bought the car. (Oil changes and 10000 mile service). Almost a year in and about 24,000 miles now, and still no issues. The car still runs like the day I bought it. I have driven it from Michigan to North Carolina twice in the last couple of months, and I find it comfortable, extremely practical and most importantly, fun!

Vehicle year: 2015
The car has great gas mileage, achieving 40 city/hwy combined. However, it is worth noting that the slanted angle and large size of the front windows can cause the car to heat up significantly, even on mild days. This means that I have to use the air conditioner more than I would like. Additionally, the car requires a special sun shade that can be inconvenient to use, as normal sun shades do not fit. As a short person, I found that the sun visors did not block the sun effectively, and I had to purchase a visor extender. It is also worth noting that there is only one roof rack available for the car, which costs almost $500, and that a small hybrid bike barely fits in with the tire removed.

Vehicle year: 2013
'13 Fit base 5MT. I have been driving this car for 10 months and have covered 10,000 miles without any issues. Although the display indicated that there was 50% oil life left at 5K miles, I decided to change the oil at that point. I changed the oil again at 10K miles, even though the display still indicated that there was 50% oil life remaining. I have noticed that the engine seems to run better on full synthetic oil. Unfortunately, the air conditioner lost refrigerant at 26,000 miles, but there was nothing wrong with the AC unit itself. I am a bit concerned that there has been no dash display for maintenance (wrench symbol) after 10K miles, as there are no mileage recommendations for maintenance in the owner's manual and I am wholly dependent on the car computer for maintenance scheduling. However, I am very satisfied and happy with the car. It has been three years and it is still running perfectly. I replaced the original Dunlop tires at 28K miles because they wore unevenly, and the Bridgestone Eco___ tires I replaced them with are significantly quieter and have greatly improved the ride. I had to wait for two months for a recall for the Takata airbag to be replaced, but the dealer provided a free loaner/rental during the wait. It is worth noting that those with rental/loaners are prioritized to the top of the waiting list. At 39,000 miles on the odometer, the car is getting 1-2 mpg less mileage on a gallon of gas, but the lifetime mpg is still slightly over 31, which is 2 mpg OVER the EPA estimate. The engine feels as if it's finally A test was initiated in 2013-2014. The 2013 Fit was designed and in production over 4 years prior to the creation of this new crash test. It is hard to design for something that has not yet been devised or invented. Much credit goes to Honda for their 3rd generation Fit, introduced as a 2015 model mid-year 2014. They recalled the first 14,000 units sold and refitted them with newly designed front bumpers that passed the new 'small offset frontal crash test'. Subsequent units were all outfitted with the redesigned bumpers. Kudos to Honda for being willing to redesign 'on the fly'. Many other manufacturers, rather than redesign non-conforming models, simply wait until the current non-conforming model runs its course and do not redesign until the next iteration or update of the non-conforming model. Other information on the Honda Fit 3rd generation 2015-present: Honda's new manufacturing plant in Mexico was designed to fabricate the 3rd generation Fit and the new compact CUV, the HR-V, which is based on the Fit chassis. Initial units had a lot of uncharacteristic (for Honda) quality control problems. In addition, cars were being stripped of parts in transit to the United States. More recently, it has been my observation that the new 3rd generation Fits have been made in Japan, although the HR-V is still being produced in Mexico. I firmly believe that the quality control of cars from Japan exceeds those made in Mexico, based on my own personal experience. As of September '17, I am a bit confused on the KBB (Kelly Blue Book) value of the car today. There appears to be a wide variance, which is confusing. In general, I conclude that the value of the car to me is far more than the KBB value. This makes it hard to justify trading it in for a new vehicle. Most magazine evaluations conclude that the 2nd generation Fits (2008-2013) deliver a more responsive and sportier ride (driving dynamics) than the current (2014-2017) updated version.Prior to the current version (>2014), the previous Fits were on Car and Driver Magazine's 10 best list for 7 years in a row (2007-2013). Although the current version has not made it to the list, I believe that a low mileage Fit may be the best used car value available. My Fit has almost reached 50k miles and it's still running perfectly. It's a tough decision whether to trade it in for a new vehicle or keep it because it's such a practical and utilitarian vehicle. Despite its power limitations, it has always been a very responsive vehicle. I used to think of my former 1970's BMW 2002 as a superior car, but the 2013 Fit outperforms it in most respects - such is progress in engineering. I'll be shopping for a bonafide hot hatch, but I'll most likely keep the Fit as a utility vehicle.

I really like this car because of its fuel economy, entertainment system, and overall fit and finish. However, it's worth noting that some people have reported discomfort after driving for extended periods of time due to the design of the seats. It may be worth doing some research on this topic before making a purchase. But overall, I highly recommend the Honda Fit!

We have two Honda Fits and we really like their design and initial price. However, we have experienced some issues with the air conditioning and trunk latch. Unfortunately, both cars are no longer under warranty and the cost of fixing the A/C and trunk latch is quite high. We have also noticed that the dashboard in one of the cars is no longer level, but we understand that this is just a cosmetic issue. Despite these problems, we still appreciate the cars' cargo area and economy. If you are looking for a small car with great cargo space, we recommend checking out the Kia Soul. We absolutely love everything about ours!

I purchased a used 2015 Fit EX for my daughter's college graduation after conducting extensive car research and reading all positive 5-star online reviews in May 2017. As a Honda owner of two other vehicles with over 289k miles, I can confidently say that I love Hondas. We took a road trip from NC to PA through West Virginia for a Christmas visit to test it out and found that it has many positives. The Fit EX gets over 42 MPG, climbed the WV mountains fluidly and powerfully without excessive downshift, and the Lane Watch feature is super helpful when merging right. The ride is smooth, the steering is responsive with a tight turning radius, and it has great headroom, a nice moon roof, and lots of legroom in the back seat. Cargo room is unbelievable, almost as much as my van with back seats hidden. It's also fun to drive. However, there are some negatives to consider. The excessive road noise is similar to my van, and the touch screen radio is complicated to adjust. The knobs are much better. The seats are flat and can fatigue your back and rump on long drives, so they need more foam. Serious negatives discovered since purchase are the wiper fluid tubes under the thin plastic hood (bonnet) cowling next to the windshield (windscreen) freeze solid in the winter and don't work, which is dangerous. Another lady in the same year Fit was at the same rest stop with the same problem in a blinding blizzard. We had to share a hair dryer to melt the fluid and clean the windows. You must use fluid with alcohol in it that cannot freeze if in cold areas of the country, even if just visiting for the holidays. We have replaced the brand new tires already as they cupped badly in less than a year. Not knowing that the Fit rear axle is a fixed one (design flaw) and any slight front alignment issue cups the tires. Very few companies make skinny tires for the Fit sport wheels, so we had to spend $800 on new Michelins. The alignment must be adjusted every time the oil is changed or as often as possible. We have replaced the under-motor plastic dirt shield 4x at $230 a pop in two years. The car has a low road clearance, which can cause damage when going over speed bumps or railroad tracks. Unfortunately, my daughter has experienced this issue frequently due to her daily commute. As a result, I have been helping her with the constant repairs. Despite these challenges, we both still like the car. However, it is important to note that it may be better suited for city driving on smooth roads. If the online reviews had mentioned the low ride and clearance, and the non-adjustable fixed rear axel, we would have considered other options such as the Honda CRZ, Mazda 3 5-door, or Hyundai Elantra 5-door. Overall, it is a shame that these issues were not highlighted in the reviews. Perhaps Honda could consider insulating the windscreen washer tubes, adding ergonomic foam to the seats, and raising the suspension up an inch or two to improve the car's performance.

The car is packed with a lot of technology, which is impressive and overshadows some of the flaws. I owned a 2019 Honda Fit for a little over a year and while it had its highs, it also had some lows. Before the Fit, I had a 2017 Civic, but I decided to get something more economical. Interestingly enough, the Fit consumed gas like it was starved, despite having a smaller gas tank. There should be no reason why I should be at half a tank by the middle of the week, especially since I work only 10 minutes away. Additionally, this car would burn through gas at a busy drive-thru. Now, this is where I start to get irritated. The car is so loud, even in the idle position. You want to get up a steep hill and it sounds like a lawn mower. (Definitely my fault for not pushing it during my test drive, but I did go to the dealership during rush hour). Then, one day I go to make a U-turn, foot lightly touching the gas, and it shudders like it wants to turn off. The first time I shrugged it off, but by the third time, I had enough. I took it in and was told that everything is electrical down to the acceleration pedal, so the car needed time to respond. It literally made no sense to me. It's not like it's one of those vehicles that shuts off to conserve gas. While it has amazing safety features, it just wasn't for me, and I went right back to a Civic. This car is definitely for someone who's a first-time driver, college student, or maybe a retiree. Do your research before you purchase!

The Honda Fit Sport offers an amazing interior cargo space, which has proven to be a big plus. However, after driving it for almost 5 months, I have noticed a few areas for improvement. The driver seat can be uncomfortable for drives longer than an hour, causing hip pain despite the great back lumbar support. Additionally, the paint quality seems to be lacking, with some spots showing the beginnings of rust. Lastly, the front spoiler is positioned too low, causing it to scrape on driveways with even a slight pitch. Overall, the Honda Fit Sport is a great car with some minor areas for improvement.
