2007 Volvo V70 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2007 Volvo V70 problems

The Volvo V70 is a popular car known for its robust design and high-quality build. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain issues and faults. This article will discuss common problems with the 2007 Volvo V70 based on complaints from owners and expert analysis.

  • Electronic Throttle Module: The electronic throttle module in the V70 can gunk up over time, causing unresponsive acceleration and a jumpy ride. If the vehicle exhibits strange behavioral symptoms, such as unresponsive acceleration, it could be due to a faulty electronic throttle module.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): The DPF in the V70 needs to be replaced every 75,000 miles. If the car stalls and idles badly, or if black fumes are visible from the exhaust, it could indicate a DPF blockage. Regular replacement of this part is crucial to maintain the vehicle's performance and prevent further damage.
  • Turbochargers: Turbochargers in the V70 have been known to fail, causing blue smoke from the exhaust pipe on start-up and a shortage of engine power. If the car shows these symptoms, it is best to avoid it, as the repair cost can exceed £1000.
  • Exhaust Heat Shields: Exhaust heat shields in the V70 can work themselves loose, leading to potential engine problems. It is essential to check the vehicle's service history to ensure that any necessary repairs have been made before purchasing the car.
  • Fuel Injection System: Diesel engines in the V70 can have problems with the fuel injection system. If the engine is reluctant to start or produces lots of black smoke when it does start, it is advisable to look for another vehicle.
  • Parking Brake: On some V70 models built between 24 February 2011 and 2 February 2015, the parking brake may release without warning. It is essential to check with a Volvo dealer to ensure that the updated software required to prevent this from happening has been applied.
  • Fuel Gauge: A software update is being sought to correct an issue with the fuel gauge showing the wrong level on vehicles constructed between 24 April 2014 and 11 December 2015. If your car is affected, it is recommended to keep the fuel level above a third of a tank until a fix can be implemented.
  • Coolant Leak: Some V70s built between 27 May 2010 and 17 April 2015 may have a coolant leak during the warm-up process, which could result in an engine fire in extreme circumstances. It is crucial to check with a Volvo dealer to ensure that your car is not affected by this issue.

In conclusion, while the Volvo V70 is a robust and well-built vehicle, it is not immune to certain problems and faults. Potential buyers should be aware of these common issues, particularly those related to the suspension, electronic throttle module, diesel particulate filter, turbochargers, exhaust heat shields, fuel injection system, parking brake, fuel gauge, and coolant leak. Thoroughly inspecting the vehicle's history, service records, and conducting a test drive can help identify any potential issues before making a purchase.

2007 Volvo V70 engine

What is the common problem with Volvo V70?

The top engine mount is known for failing on the V70. When you are taking off, or changing gear you may hear a loud knocking noise. Another symptom of the top engine mount failing is when you open the bonnet, have someone rev the engine for you and if it shakes excessively then this is the cause.

What is the best year of Volvo V70 to buy?

Going back to the 2000-2007 era still makes sense. This V70 still looks great and can have kiddie- friendly rear seats in the boot, but mostly it's a proper load-lugger, with its posh carpeted cargo bay. Note that it got something of a revamp in 2004.

What is the life expectancy of a Volvo V70?

That being said, Volvo Cars is among the top brands when it comes to longevity. Among the factors mentioned above, regular maintenance and driving style can make a huge difference. Overall, expect to see your Volvo vehicle last for over 200,000 miles if you give it proper care each year.

What year did Volvo XC70 have transmission problems?

Aside from the 2012 Volvo XC70, the 2003-2008 and 2010-2012 model years could also develop transmission shifting problems.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-08-01
  • VIN: YV1SW592672
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: Bought 2 SuperMax TM-1 235/45R17 94 H Tires thru Walmart.com from Tirebros. Treadlife advertised as 45K. At less than 20K I brought them in to a tire shop because of terrible pulling while driving. Two tire shops showed me where the the bands were separating, necessitating replacement for safety issue of catastrophic tire tearing apart at speed. Tirebros, the sellers, would not return several emails for warranty and never answered the support phone. Because of that, it's possible they know they are selling bad tires. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THROTTLE BODY HAS ONGOING ISSUES WITH NEEDING TO BE CLEANED FREQUENTLY. CAR HAS ROUGH IDLE, SPUTTERS AND JUMPS WITHOUT WARNING. SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-06-16
  • VIN: YV4SZ592271
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: THIS CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN WITH CARE FOR 7 YEARS. IT HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT NOR HAS IT HAD OTHER SIGNIFICANT FAILURES. IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS BOTH SPRINGS ON THE REAR OF THE CAR HAVE BROKEN AND THE CAR HAS DROPPED SIGNIFICANTLY. WE REPAIRED THE FIRST ONE ($500) AND WERE TOLD THAT THE DEALER (WYNN VOLVO) HAS NEVER SEEN BROKEN SPRINGS UNTIL THIS YEAR. WHEN THE SECOND ONE WENT TODAY ( WHILE IN THE DRIVEWAY) IT NOT ONLY RAISED CONCERNS ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE VEHICLE, BUT ALSO ABOUT THE SAFETY OF IT. IF WE HAD BEEN DRIVING AT ANY SPEED WHEN THIS HAPPENED, SERIOUS INJURY AND POTENTIALLY DEATH MAY HAVE OCCURRED. IN DOING SOME RESEARCH, IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS A RECURRENT THEME WITH VOLVOS DURING THE LAST DECADE. IT SEEMS THAT THERE IS INHERENT DANGER THAT COULD CAUSE INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE AND YET VOLVO CLAIMS THAT IT IS NOT COMMON. I DISAGREE AND WOULD ENCOURAGE AN INVESTIGATION. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-07-10
  • VIN: YV1SW592571
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: I OWN A 2007 VOLVO V70 WITH LOW MILEAGE -- 19,000 MILES, VIN # [XXX]. NORMALLY MY WIFE DRIVES THE CAR JUST AROUND WHERE WE LIVE SINCE SHE DOES NOT WORK - JUST A FEW MILES A DAY. LAST WEEK, WHILE GOING TO THE LOCAL GROCERY STORE WITH MY 20 MONTH OLD GRANDSON IN THE CAR, SHE ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT WHEN BRAKING THE CAR FROM ABOUT 50 MPH. SO I BEGAN DRIVING THE CAR TO WORK WHICH IS ABOUT 20 MILES AWAY. WHEN BRAKING FROM HIGH MEDIUM TO HIGH SPEEDS 45-70 MPH, FRONT WHEEL SHIMMY SHAKE IS ENOUGH TO CAUSE CAR TO BRAKE IMPROPERLY AND CAUSE CAR TO SEVERELY PULL TO ONE SIDE. THIS ALSO ALMOST CAUSED ME TO WRECK TWICE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEMONTROND VOLVO, HOUSTON, TEXAS. THEIR SHOP FOREMAN SAID THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO RUST BUILDUP ON THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS. I SAID WHAT? YOU MUST BE KIDDING. VOLVO REFUSES TO COVER THIS UNDER WARRANTY CITING NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I CONTEND THIS IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR HAVING OWNED CARS SINCE 1965 WITH NO PROBLEMS WITH BRAKES DUE TO RUST BUILDUP, WITH ALL OF THOSE BEING VOLVOS SINCE 1985. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS IN MY LIFE -- RUST BUILDUP ON ROTORS AND PADS CAUSING A BRAKING PROBLEM. VOLVO ALSO STATES THAT THE VEHICLE SHOULD BE DRIVEN MORE FREQUENTLY TO PREVENT THE RUST BUILDUP. THIS IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR, I TOLD THE SALES MANAGER AT DEMONTROND VOLVO THAT MY WIFE ONLY DRIVES A CAR ABOUT 6,000 MILES PER YEAR. I HAD NOTICED THE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WOULD START TO RUST BEFORE I COULD FINISH WASHING THE CAR WHEN I WASHED THE CAR MYSELF. BEING A SAFETY ENGINEER, MY CONTENTION IS THIS RUST BUILDUP ON 2007 VOLVO V70 BRAKE ROTORS AND PAD IS A SAFETY DEFECT. LIKEWISE, FROM SEARCHING THE INTERNET, OTHERS HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH VOLVOS. *TR

HE NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS ADVISED BY A REPRESENTATIVE THAT THE FAILURE WAS A NORMAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE VEHICLE. HE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE VEHICLE TO A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 54000 UPDATED 09/23/09 *BF UPDATED 09/30/09.*JB

THE VEHICLE WOULD RESTART ONCE STOPPED AND PLACED IN PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR SERVICE THREE TIMES. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTO SHOP TO BE SERVICED FOR THE RECALL, AND THE LAST TWO TIMES IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED. Negative 2007 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Brock Maggio 2024-08-15

The seats are very comfortable, but unfortunately the ride can be rough and the inside cabin rattles. I have had some issues with the car and it has spent almost two months in the shop since I've owned it. However, I must say that the seats are fantastic. The customer service at the headquarters could use some improvement, as they have not followed up on my complaints. Despite these issues, I have a love-hate relationship with this car. If the pieces were put together more meticulously, it could be one of the best cars I've driven. While I wouldn't own another Volvo due to my experiences with the company and dealer, I would definitely recommend the seats.

  2. Everett Spinka 2024-07-15

My first review was in October 2007. Since then, the V70 has only accumulated 19,000 miles, which is relatively low mileage. Although the door locks were initially problematic, opening and closing at random, the issue has since been resolved. However, I have encountered a major problem with rust buildup on the brake rotors and pads, which causes wheel shimmy when braking. Initially, Volvo refused to cover this under warranty, citing normal wear and tear. The cost of repair was almost $1000. After filing a complaint with the main office in NJ, they agreed to cover the rotors, but not the pads on all four wheels, which still amounted to $450. This was quite frustrating, especially since I have never had this problem in my 47 years of driving. Based on my experience, I would not recommend anyone to buy a new Volvo. While they used to be great cars when they were 4-cylinder models, I still have two 940s that I am happy with.

  3. Garret Jaskolski 2024-06-28

I bought this car used in March. The fuel economy is not too bad, comparable to my '97 Honda Accord. The interior comfort could be better, but the performance is good. I might consider buying a used '08 next year if it has a more comfortable interior. The car comes with a navigation system, but I'm not a fan of it as it gets on my nerves. The third row seat is also not very useful.

  4. Devon Kozey 2024-05-27

Repairs on these cars can be quite expensive. For example, when my 2007 V70 had a leak in both the rubber O rings in front and behind the engine after 7 years, it required replacement. I took it to a local shop and they had to drop the engine and transmission twice, which cost me $4000. The local dealer was asking for $7500. However, if you are looking for reliable and low-cost transportation, you may want to consider a Toyota.

  5. Brendon Streich 2024-05-27

This SUV offers more usable space than most small SUVs and is also comfortable to drive. However, as someone who has driven Saabs for many years, I found the turning radius of this vehicle to be almost truck-like in comparison.

Positive 2007 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Hollis Glover 2025-01-03

This is the best Volvo I have owned, and it's my 5th wagon! It's incredibly comfortable, classy, and safe. I absolutely love it. I purchased it with 39,000 miles, and it consistently gets 29-31mpg on the highway.

  2. Vidal Mueller 2024-11-20

As a fellow Volvo owner of 25 years, I was pleasantly surprised by the luxurious feel of this newer model. The ride was great, and the power and comfort were top-notch. Additionally, the upgraded sound system was fantastic!

  3. Bryon Marquardt 2024-10-29

I bought a similar version in 2001 and drove my Volvo for over 185,000 with no issues other than routine maintenance. The engineering is fantastic, fuel economy is good considering the size and weight of the vehicle. Safety is fantastic and overall, it's the best car I have ever bought.

  4. Cedrick Bailey 2024-10-15

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with Volvos. I've owned quite a few in my time, but I have to say that this one is my absolute favorite. Not only does it have all the features you'd expect from a Volvo wagon, but it's also a blast to drive!

  5. Allan Shields 2024-09-26

Great car! It has lots of seating room and ample cargo space. Plus, it's so fun to drive. It's like having a station wagon and SUV in one!
