2012 Honda Fit problems
The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.
Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.
Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.
The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common 2012 Honda Fit problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Honda Fit 2012, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Uncomfortable Seats: Numerous reports indicate that the Fit interior isn't comfortable, leading to neck and back pains due to flat and unsupportive seats. Some owners resorted to buying seat cushions and headrests to alleviate this problem.
- Starter Failure: The 2015 Fit had issues with its starter failing around 46,000 miles, causing intermittent starting problems. Some drivers used jump start battery packs to get the engine running.
- Fuel Filler Door Issue: Owners of 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 Honda Fits complained that their fuel door refused to open. A revised fuel fill push lifter from Honda was needed to fix this problem.
- Transmission Problems: Particularly in earlier models (2007-2008), some Honda Fit models experienced issues with the automatic transmission, such as harsh shifting or transmission failure.
- Engine Problems: Reported issues include excessive oil consumption and engine misfires, notably in the 2009-2013 models. The 2015 and 2016 models also faced recalls due to potential engine failures caused by connecting rod bolts that could loosen.
- Water Leaks: Some Fits, especially in the 2009-2013 range, have been known to develop leaks into the interior, often due to issues with the door seals or the air conditioning system.
- Suspension Issues: Complaints about premature wear of suspension components, such as shock absorbers and struts, have surfaced, especially in the 2007-2013 models.
- Dashboard Warning Lights: The 2015-2016 models had issues with various dashboard warning lights illuminating due to electric power steering failure.
- Electric Power Steering Failure: Complaints about the electric power steering in the 2007-2013 Honda Fit models have been reported, leading to increased steering effort.
These problems highlight some of the common issues faced by owners of the Honda Fit 2012 model, ranging from mechanical failures to discomfort-related issues within the vehicle.
What is the most common problem with Honda Fit?
Many drivers have reported experiencing back and neck pain when driving their Honda Fit for long hours. Most point to the model's head restraints as the culprit because they're inclined forward, forcing the driver's head to tilt forward. Several drivers have also complained that the seats feel flat and unsupportive.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-18
- VIN: JHMGE8H5XCC
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving my regular commute to work with the radio on, the radio and interior lights (not sure if headlights because I can't see them) flashed on and off and the power steering warning light flashed on and off. At that time, the car jerked and I lost power steering for a moment. This happened several times and the radio stopped working. This did not happen on the way home, but reoccured a few days later. I made an appointment with the dealer They had my car for the day and were not able to locate the issue, but they fixed my radio and told me to bring it back if it happened again. They checked alternator, fuses, and looked for an electrical short. A few weeks later, it happened again, I brought the car back and they could not find the problem, but fixed the radio. The car was fine for a month and it is happening again. Losing power steering while driving is a serious safety hazard for myself and others.

- Summary: Driving down the highway the spark plug was blown out of the engine head and the car lost power immediately. The car has approximately 12,000 miles and all OEM parts from the manufacture. Maintenance was kept up on the car. This is extremely dangerous since this highway is usually busy with cars and tractor trailers. My son was in the left lane and was almost hit by a tractor trailer due to the violent explosion of the spark plug being blown out of the engine. In addition, was unable to get over to the shoulder of the road and had to stop in the left-hand lane on route 80 in NJ which is very dangerous. Both of my sons were in the car when this occurred. The car was towed to my licensed mechanic who confirmed that the spark plug was blown out of the engine which caused the loud noise and loss of power. There was no warning, symptoms or messages before this occurred which is why I am extremely concerned for the safety of others who own this type of vehicle.

IN EACH OF THESE EVENTS, THE STEERING ASSIST SOMETIMES CUTS OUT FOR A SECOND OR TWO CAUSING ME TO HAVE TO MANUALLY CONTROL THE STEERING. IN ALL EVENT INSTANCES, CABIN POWER IS AFFECTED: POWER TO RADIO WILL RESTART, AND SOMETIMES DASHBOARD LIGHTS GO AS WELL. IN MORE SEVERE INSTANCES DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND SEATBELT LIGHTS CUTOUT MOMENTARILY AND A STEERING DTC SHINES QUICKLY IN THE DUMMY LIGHT CLUSTER. ENVIRONMENT: EPS STEERING ISSUES HAPPEN AT ALL MANNER OF SPEEDS AND MANUEVERS - REGULAR BACKROAD DRIVING, PARKING LOTS AND EVEN SITTING IDLE. CAR HARDLY HAS BEEN DRIVEN THE PAST FEW YEARS (UNDER 7500/YEAR) AND HAS NEVER HIT ANYTHING, BEEN BUMPED (OR IF IT DID, WE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT) NOR BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT OF ANY KIND. THE DAMPER IS HELD IN PLACE BY ONLY ONE STAINLESS STEEL CLAMP ( AT ITS LOWER END). SINCE WATER AND SALT CAN ENTER ITS UPPER END , WITHOUT A CLAMP THERE, IT STAYS IN THE SPACE BETWEEN THE AXLE AND DAMPER AND THE CORROSION BEGINS. EVEN AFTERMARKET MANUFACTURERS HAVE DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND LEFT THE DAMPER OFF THEIR AXLES. WHEN THIS BREAK HAPPENED THE VEHICLE WAS STARTING OFF FROM A STOP AND TURNING RIGHT ON A CITY STREET.

- VIN: JHMGE8H58CC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE LEFT FRONT AXLE SHAFT BROKE IN JUNE 2018, WITH 89,032 ODOMETER MILES, AND THE RIGHT AXLE SHAFT BROKE DECEMBER 3, 2019 WITH 105,436 MILES. IN THE MOST RECENT INSTANCE I WAS STOPPED ON A HILL, WITH A CAR BEHIND ME, AND WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE AXLE BROKE AND MY CAR STARTED ROLLING BACKWARDS. I APPLIED THE BRAKES QUICKLY ENOUGH TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR BEHIND ME. IN THE FIRST INSTANCE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR MILES FROM HOME WHERE SHE WAS STRANDED UNTIL A TOW TRUCK COULD BE CALLED. MY MECHANIC SAYS HE IS SEEING THIS WITH SOME FREQUENCY ON HONDA FITS, AND IT SEEMS TO BE THE RESULT OF RUST WHERE HONDA INSTALLS A RUBBER VIBRATION DAMPER AT THE AXLE. THE POTENTIAL FOR A SERIOUS INCIDENT IS OBVIOUS IF THE CAR WERE TO LOSE PROPULSION ON A BUSY HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEED, OR WHERE THE CAR SUDDENLY STARTS TO ROLL BACKWARDS AS I EXPERIENCED. AND APPARENTLY THIS IS BECOMING A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE HONDA FIT, AND MAYBE OTHER MODELS WITH THE SAME DESIGN.THE REPAIR OF BOTH AXLES HAVE COST US A TOTAL OF $740.00.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-31
- VIN: JHMGE8H65CC

I bought this car new in August of 2012. I am a courier and drive over 1000 miles a week. As of today, 4/5/15, I have about 139,000 miles on my Fit. I have always done the recommended service and have only had one issue since purchasing this car. A front wheel bearing needed replacing a few months ago. I average 30-35 miles a gallon in mixed driving. Power is adequate for what I do. This is the first Honda I've ever owned. The Fit has an amazing capacity to haul things. I am consistently amazed at how much "stuff" fits in the car.

I bought this car used with around 60,000 miles on the clock for my daughter to use while in college. During the 3 years and 30,000 miles that we have owned it, it has been completely trouble-free. I keep up with all the basic maintenance myself, and the only time I had to take it to the dealer was for an airbag recall that took less than two hours. The fuel mileage has been 32mpg combined city and highway, but I got close to 40mpg on a 1600 mile highway trip. The interior is great and allows you to carry a ton of stuff if you need to. My only criticism is that on the highway with a full load, it could use a little more power.

The Honda Fit is an excellent city car, small on the outside but surprisingly spacious on the inside. It's perfect for day-to-day hauling needs, unless you're a moving company. I've been driving the Fit for a month now and I'm averaging about 31mpg. If your commute is on the freeway, you can easily do even better. While the Fit may lack in acceleration, it more than makes up for it with its exceptional handling. You can have a lot of fun with this car in the curves. I also considered the Mazda 3 and Chevy Sonic, both of which offered more features than the Fit. However, I found that the Mazda had more road noise and the Sonics I looked at already had rattles. If it weren't for those rattles, I would have chosen the Sonic.

We've been driving our 2012 Fit Sport since December 2011 and it's been an absolute blast! With its great acceleration and phenomenal handling, it's a joy to drive, especially with the 5-speed manual. Even with 90% of our driving being in town and only 3 to 10 miles round trip, we're still getting an unbelievable 31.5 miles per gallon. And the spacious interior and great engineering make it even better. We can't say enough good things about this car!

The rear shocks were replaced at 24000 miles and the tires had normal wear at that point. However, every tire was splitting apart at the second tread in. The paint on this car was not up to the standard I expected, especially compared to the other new cars I have owned. The paint chipping was primarily on the hood but was not limited to the front of the car. Although I have seen very few cars with this problem, the ones I have seen were older and had premature surface rusting. Despite these issues, the car still provides great gas mileage and comfortable transportation. However, it may have a negative impact on your resale value. For this reason, I decided to trade it in with only 27000 miles and it was rated low. I traded it in for a Nissan Altima and have never regretted it. Before buying a Fit, I recommend test driving an Accord, Camry or Altima. You will get more value for your money!

I recently switched from a 2010 Scion XD with a 1.8 engine to a 1.5 engine in my new car. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the new engine as it tends to run at 2.5 to 3 rpms most of the time and is quite loud. I didn't expect to miss my old engine so much, but it's been a bigger deal than I thought. In comparison, my Scion had a combined mpg of 36.5, whereas the Fit only gets 30.1 mpg, which is disappointing. To make matters worse, I tried to trade it in after only two months, but was told that I'm already upside down and unlikely to overturn my situation. They did offer me a 30,000 car, but I declined. By the way, I would advise against buying too many warranties as it can make it difficult to get your next loan. Lesson learned! Overall, I'm not very happy with my new car, but I'm hoping things will improve.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my new car that I bought in Hawaii. It's a sporty automatic and I got it for a great price of 20,500 OTD. I've been driving it to work, which is only a mile away, and I've noticed that I'm only averaging 19mpg. I know it's a lot of stop and go traffic, but I'm not even using the air conditioning. I was hoping to get closer to the mpg stated in the fact sheet. I haven't contacted Honda yet because I know they'll say it's still new and needs to be broken in, but I'm a bit concerned. Another issue I've noticed is that the transmission feels like it's downshifting too quickly when I come to a stop. Have you experienced anything similar? Thank you for your help!

I have been driving my Fit for 6 months and have covered 6,000 miles. However, I am disappointed with its performance. Despite driving cautiously, I have not been able to achieve the advertised mileage of 27 mpg in the city. I have been getting only 22-24 mpg. Surprisingly, my previous car, which was much heavier and had a bigger engine, gave me better city mileage. I find the Fit to be slow and not very powerful. While it serves its purpose of getting me from A to B, I have to be extra careful while merging into traffic.
