The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.

Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.

Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.

The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common 2009 Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit 2009 is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are the most frequently mentioned issues in detail:

  • Engine Failure: Premature engine failure was a significant problem reported in 2008 Honda Fit models, and it continued to affect the 2009 models. Affected vehicles would start up normally and suddenly stall after running for a few miles, particularly in cold weather. This issue can be costly to repair, as engine repairs can be expensive for any vehicle. Regularly checking your car for potential issues and maintaining the engine in good condition is essential to prevent this problem.
  • Clear-Coat Fading: The Honda Fit 2009 has a common issue with clear-coat fading and the paint on the hood and roof starting to peel away. This issue does not affect the car's performance, but it can significantly affect the car's appearance. To remedy the issue, the majority of owners had to get their vehicle repainted to reclaim the Honda Fit's sleek appearance.
  • Oxygen Sensor: The Honda Fit oxygen sensor problem is one of the most common reasons why the check engine light may be on in the Fit. If you are unsure if you are experiencing this oxygen sensor problem with your Honda Fit, look for these common symptoms: - Fuel Mileage Decrease - Hesitation/Misfiring from Engine - Rough Idling or Stalling - Failed Emissions Test. If you are experiencing the above and think you have a Honda Fit oxygen sensor problem, the most common solution is to have the oxygen sensor replaced, which can cost anywhere from $600-$800 at most mechanic shops.
  • Solenoid Problems: Solenoids are one of the most important parts of your car's transmission, and they act as gates to control the flow of transmission fluid, enabling the transmission to switch between gears. If you are experiencing unpredictable gear shifts or delayed shifting, you may be experiencing transmission solenoid problems.
  • Bluetooth Connectivity Issues: There are also many reports of Honda Fit Bluetooth problems where your phone is unable to connect or is connected but still not functioning correctly. This issue generally has a simple solution, such as resetting the Bluetooth connection or updating the software.
  • Fuel Filler Door: Owners of 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014 Honda Fits complained that their fuel door refuses to open. You have to get a revised fuel fill push lifter from Honda to fix this issue.
  • Transmission Problems: Some Honda Fit models, particularly the earlier ones (2007-2008), have experienced issues with the automatic transmission, such as harsh shifting or transmission failure.
  • Engine Problems: Issues such as excessive oil consumption and engine misfires have been reported, notably in the 2009-2013 models. The 2015 and 2016 models also faced recalls due to potential engine failures caused by connecting rod bolts that could loosen.
  • Water Leaks: Some Fits, especially in the 2009-2013 range, have been known to develop leaks into the interior, often due to issues with the door seals or the air conditioning system.
  • Suspension Issues: Complaints about premature wear of suspension components, such as shock absorbers and struts, have surfaced, especially in the 2007-2013 models.
  • Dashboard Warning Lights: The 2015-2016 models have had issues with various dashboard warning lights illuminating due to electrical problems.
  • Electric Power Steering Failure: The 2007-2013 Honda Fit models have seen complaints about the electric power steering, which can fail and significantly increase steering effort.

While the Honda Fit is generally considered a reliable vehicle, these common problems can affect the car's performance and overall driving experience. Regular maintenance and checking your vehicle for potential issues can help prevent these problems and keep your Honda Fit in good condition.

What is the most common problem with Honda Fit?

Many drivers have reported experiencing back and neck pain when driving their Honda Fit for long hours. Most point to the model's head restraints as the culprit because they're inclined forward, forcing the driver's head to tilt forward. Several drivers have also complained that the seats feel flat and unsupportive.

Is the 2009 Honda Fit reliable?

Reliable. This car has been extremely reliable and fun to drive. I have put well over 200K miles on it with no issues. Save the manuals as there is nothing like running through the gears in a Honda.

What is the fuel efficiency of a Honda Fit 2009?

27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway

The 2009 Honda Fit Sport checks in at 27 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. So I was a little surprised to see on Donna's fuel-economy rundown that somebody previously got 37.1 mpg as our best mpg. In checking the fuel log, I noticed that the fuel-up was during the car's track testing.

How many Litres is a Honda Fit 2009?

1.5-liter

All models in the 2009 Honda Fit lineup are powered by 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that Car and Driver says gets a "modest power bump to 117 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque," compared to the 2008 Honda Fit's 109 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque.

  • VIN: JHMGE88219C
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My doors have defaulted to the lock position, even when the vehicle is occupied. The electronic unlock system will not permit the car to unlock. The manual lock strongly resists being moved to the unlock position. With much force, it can be moved, but immediately relocks. The only way to exit the vehicle is to force the manual lock to unlock while simultaneously pulling the handle to open the door. This is an extreme safety hazard - as one cannot easily exit the vehicle. Upon entering the vehicle, an older driver, a less strong driver, or partially disabled driver would be trapped in their vehicle with only emergency procedures able to free them. If there were an accident, and the airbag were deployed - it would be impossible for an able bodied driver to get both hands to the door and initiate the sequence necessary to exit the car. One would be trapped. An incredibly dangerous situation. I see the door actuator has been recalled on other Honda models - so it is a known issue with the manufacturer. I am currently partiually diasble, and

I have photos of the broken drive axle. I later found out the part was recalled. I was never notified of any recall. I had my mechanic fix the car. He put in a new axle. Then I found out (on Facebook) that the axle was covered by recall. I called Honda. They said they will reimburse me for the repair. I sent them all the info, detailed bill and paid in full receipt. They did not pay. They closed my case. They do not return phone calls or letters.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-25
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JHMGE87499S
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On April 25, 2022 our 2009 Fit started rolling away when it was parked, not in gear and the parking brake was not set. In trying to "catch" the car from traveling into the street, my elderly husband took a bad fall and sustained a shattered shoulder, nerve damage, and other injuries. The car continued to travel into the street, and finally stopped after hitting the car parked across the street (my 2005 Toyota). At first, we thought it was simply an unfortunate incident and did not report the incident. Last week, however, we received the notice from Honda about the NHTSA Recall 20V-770. This is the first time we were notified about the recall! When I went to your website, it appears Honda knew about this in 2020. We are taking the car to the dealership tomorrow (August 5, 2022). I am grateful you have a site that puts our safety first. Hopefully, we will know whether a defect was a factor in the accident. I have a related safety question. The dealership said they would inspect the part, and order a new one if it needs it, and let us know when the work could be done. Is it safe to keep driving the Fit while we wait for the part? I'd rather get an answer from an unbiased professional like yourselves. Many thanks for your help.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-19
  • VIN: jhmge88279s
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I was driving home during evening rush hour on the freeway, 65 mph. Suddenly, it felt as though I was driving a tank. Lucky that I was in the slow lane. I used the next exit and drove the rest of the way home very slowly on surface streets. A 100 degree turn in the roadway that I drove on would have been a disaster if a car was coming at me from the opposite direction. It got harder and harder to turn the further that I got. I managed to return home o k. I have had regular Honda maintenance at the dealership where I bought the car. Nowwhere else over the past twelve years. I will call the dealer to make an appointment tomorrow. I've never previously known of this problem - have not read or heard anything via media or been advised by Honda Inc. I've been concerned about electronic steering ever since I bought the car. If there is wind blowing, the car becomes unstable and drifts sideways.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-28
  • VIN: JHMGE87439S
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On Jan. 28, 2018 the drive shaft on my Honda Fit snapped while up shifting onto the main road. Car was towed and repaired the following day by a local shop. At the time there was no know recall for this part. My information and claim was submitted to Honda on 2/08/2021 with invoice and paid receipt. Honda verified that the part was repaired on my car and paid for. Honda has failed to either pay for the repair or send a letter of denial. Honda has also failed to return phone calls or return email. It should be noted that Honda claim agent harassed me by asking for unreasonable documentation such to prove the car was not in an accident or had to be pushed into the service bay at the repair shop. Claim number available upon request.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-28
  • VIN: JHMGE87209S
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: This is related to the Honda Fit 2000 manual transmission driver shaft recall (Service Bulletin 21-009). Part of the background of this recall reads: “Due to improper manufacturing, the paint on the driveshaft near the dynamic damper may peel and chip over time, exposing the bare metal and potentially causing it to corrode under the dynamic damper. A corroded driveshaft may break during high torque conditions, rendering the vehicle without propulsion, or allowing the vehicle to roll while in Park, which can increase the potential of a crash or injury.” I was surprised to see that only the driver shaft where the dynamic damper is located would be replaced. After I brought in my car (a manual transmission) in for the recall I noticed that the other driver shaft (does not have a damper) is corroded as well. If the drive shaft can break due to corrosion on one side why would it not break on the other side? I would assume it’s made of the same material with only differences that one has a damper and the other does not. Is the damper what would cause the breakage of the driver shaft or the corrosion? The manufacturer failed to apply proper coding on both sides of the driver shaft not just on the side of the damper. I want to bring this to your attention and want to understand the reasoning behind the decision. I am concerned that this still poses a danger for breakage of the drive shaft that wasn’t replaced and where proper coding was not used. Attached are pictures of the driver shaft that was not replaced as well as the bulletin. Thank you

Negative 2009 Honda Fit car reviews

  1. Wiley Ferry 2024-09-27

To be honest, I would give this car 5 stars for reliability, which is similar to my Honda motorcycles. However, it is not very fast and doesn't handle in an inspiring way. I have had some issues with the front assembly popping out on small curbs, but overall it's a decent car. It may be better suited for driving in Japan. Additionally, the design may not be everyone's cup of tea as it resembles a mini-van. I ended up selling it because I needed a car that could handle freeway driving better. Overall, it's a reliable car but may not be the best fit for everyone's needs.

  2. Zander Kautzer 2024-09-21

I understand your disappointment with the car. It seems that the engine can be quite buzzy and the transmission may not always find the right gear. Additionally, the ride can be bumpy and the seats are uncomfortable without the ability to adjust the height. However, it is worth noting that the car has beautiful styling. Thank you for sharing your experience and I hope you find a car that better suits your needs.

  3. Carroll Berge 2024-08-18

The car has been in the shop six times due to transmission issues, squeaks, and rattles. The navigation system malfunctions during rainy weather and there are issues with water leaks. The build quality is subpar.

  4. Hershel Barrows 2024-05-29

The concept of this car is perfect. Although, I must say that the suspension is a bit too harsh. It's not firm, which is okay, but it can be a bit uncomfortable as you feel every road flaw. The MPG is averaging 30, which is mediocre for a car with this modest level of power and performance. The transmission constantly shifts on even small grades, which can be a bit annoying. However, the handling is excellent and the car is very roomy and versatile. The interior is also excellent. I would suggest taking the car for a test drive on both a concrete highway and broken city streets before making a purchase. If you can live with the jittery ride and average MPG, then this car is very strong in other areas. Personally, I'll be trading it in for a Civic or Mazda 3 soon.

  5. Blair Bahringer 2024-05-15

I wanted to try out this car after hearing about Toyota's recent issues, but unfortunately it didn't meet my expectations. The car is mostly made of plastic, and I found it difficult to drive in wet conditions. Additionally, the carpet seemed to be of low quality. In the end, I decided to switch back to a reliable Toyota. I also had some issues with the dealership, but I'm sure they're working to improve their service.

Positive 2009 Honda Fit car reviews

  1. Riley Grimes 2025-01-06

Great to hear that you're enjoying the car! It sounds like it's been a reliable and comfortable option for you, even with its smaller size. Plus, it's great that you're able to easily transport your bike, dogs, and even lumber in the back. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

  2. Reagan Frami 2025-01-03

I've had my Fit Sport for over a year now and have only put 5000 miles on it. I really enjoy driving it when the weather is nice. During the first snow storm, it handled the snow well, but I didn't feel too confident since the car is quite light and it slid a few times. As a result, I parked it for the winter and drove my AWD car instead. While on long drives, I prefer to drive my other car since I'm not a fan of the road noise and slow acceleration in the Fit. However, the car is perfect for city driving and parallel parking is a breeze. It's a bit deceptive since I always think I'm close to the car in front or behind me, but in reality, I'm pretty far away. Overall, I really love the car, but it's not my first choice for long trips.

  3. Jimmy Quigley 2024-11-05

I've had my Fit for about 4-5 months now and I absolutely love it! I bought it with about 30k miles on it and have put about 10k on it since. What I really appreciate about the Fit is how roomy it is compared to other compact cars, both in the front and back seats. The hatchback is also a great feature, and I love how the rear seats can fold both down or up. Since I drive mostly highway miles, I've been averaging an impressive 38+ mpg. Additionally, my car had a remote car starter installed which has been a fantastic convenience.

  4. Abelardo Schultz 2024-11-03

Hi there! Just wanted to share that my car has been running great with 181,000 miles on it. I've been keeping up with routine maintenance like oil changes, tune ups, and fluid changes, as well as some small repairs like replacing the heat shield and valve cover gasket seal. I'm happy to report that I haven't had any major issues and the repair costs have been pretty low. Plus, the car has great safety features like airbags all around and good crash ratings. Thanks for listening!

  5. Jamel Grady 2024-10-24

I test drove a Fiesta and ended up with the Fit. The main factor in favor of the Fit was that it feels like a much bigger car on the inside. The Fiesta hatchback is claustrophobic and it's tough to see out the back window. Although the Fiesta is quieter and has more bells and whistles (Sync), the Fit has a much more flexible interior. I drive 50/50 highway/city and so far am averaging about 36 mpg. I mostly use it to commute, but I can also fit my (2) kids and all their soccer gear. With one rear seat folded down, I can fit 4, 6ft soccer goals inside. The manual shifter is great, and the iPod/USB integration is nice. Additionally, I was able to buy it used at a great price while the Fiesta is still new.
