2010 Honda Fit problems

The Honda Fit (Japanese: ホンダ・フィット, Hepburn: Honda Fitto) or Honda Jazz is a small car manufactured and marketed by Honda since 2001 over four generations. It has a five-door hatchback body style and is considered a supermini in the United Kingdom, a subcompact car in the United States, and a light car in Australia. Marketed worldwide and manufactured at ten plants in eight countries, sales reached almost 5 million by mid-2013. Honda uses the "Jazz" nameplate in Europe, Oceania, the Middle East, Africa, Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia and India; and "Fit" in Japan, Sri Lanka, China, Taiwan and the Americas.

Sharing Honda's global small car platform with the City, Airwave, first-generation Mobilio, Freed and HR-V/Vezel, the Fit is noted for its one-box or monospace design; forward-located fuel tank; configurable seats that fold in several ways to accommodate cargo in varying shapes and sizes— and cargo volume competitive to larger vehicles.

Honda released hybrid petrol-electric versions of the Fit in Japan in October 2010 and in Europe in early 2011. In 2012, Honda released the Fit EV, a limited-production all-electric version based on the second-generation model in the United States and Japan, and was widely regarded as a compliance car.

The fourth-generation model released in 2019 is currently sold in Japan, Europe, China, Taiwan, South Africa, Brunei and Singapore. Starting from 2020, the model was phased out in most Southeast Asian and Latin American countries to be replaced by the larger City Hatchback, while it was withdrawn entirely from the North American market due to falling demand within the subcompact segment.

Common 2010 Honda Fit problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Honda Fit 2010, several common problems have been reported:

  • Valve Lash Adjustment: Ensure the seller has proof of the valve lash adjustment being done. This adjustment, along with plugs and coils replacement at 100k miles, is crucial for fuel efficiency and preventing premature catalytic converter wear.
  • AC/Heater Fan Speed: Test the AC/Heater fan speed to ensure it works correctly at different settings. If the fan only operates on full blast, there might be an issue that needs attention.
  • AC Compressor: Some owners have experienced issues with the AC compressor failing, so it's essential to check its functionality during inspection.
  • Airbag Recalls: Inquire if the airbag controller and CV axles recalls have been addressed, as these are important safety recalls that should be checked and fixed if necessary.
  • Manual Transmission Bearings: For manual transmission models, listen for any unusual noises from the transmission at idle to ensure all bearings are functioning properly, as Honda input shaft bearings can be prone to issues.
  • General Maintenance: Ensure that general maintenance tasks like plugs, coils, and other recommended services have been performed at the appropriate mileage intervals to maintain the car's performance and longevity.

These reported issues highlight the importance of thorough inspection and maintenance to address potential problems and ensure the Honda Fit 2010 remains reliable and efficient for its owners.

Is 2010 Honda Fit a reliable car?

2010 Honda Fit Review

Those looking for a small car with good fuel economy, excellent reliability ratings and a spacious rear seat will find much to like in the 35-mpg Honda Fit.

What is the most common problem with Honda Fit?

Many drivers have reported experiencing back and neck pain when driving their Honda Fit for long hours. Most point to the model's head restraints as the culprit because they're inclined forward, forcing the driver's head to tilt forward. Several drivers have also complained that the seats feel flat and unsupportive.

How long do 2010 Honda Fits last?

We mentioned that the standard lifespan for the Honda Fit is around 150,000 miles. Thus, the high mileage for the car is anything over 100,000 miles. Once it reaches this point, it's far more likely to experience issues that cost more to repair than the car is worth for any driver.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
  • VIN: JHMGE8G45AC
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Just purchased the car and it suffers from "Memory Steer". After a turn, the steering does not return to neutral, but the steering wheel requires input to straighten out. Alignment, Strut Bearings and Ball Joints checked OK, suggesting the binding is in the steering column, Steering Rack or perhaps the Electric Power Steering. The problem occurs at all speeds.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-18
  • VIN: JHMGE8H41AC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving on the highway, my 2010 Honda Fit Sport automatic with 134,000 miles going around 60 mph lost power and started making sputtering noise. Fortunately, there was still some power left, and I was able to navigate to the shoulder of the highway. I turned off the car and turned It back on again and the Check Engine Light came on. I plugged in my BlueDriver diagnostic tool and it says Cylinder 2 Misfire. When I placed it in Drive, the car was making sputtering noise from the Engine Bay Area and would not accelerate, leaving me stranded on the side of the highway. I was lucky enough to maneuver the limping car in the middle of rush hours to the side of the highway. It's a miracle I didn't get into an accident, as the car lost power and was not accelerating properly. The mechanic did a diagnostic and said that Cylinder 2 spark plug blew, commonly due to the plugs coming loose, damaging the spark plug and ignition coil on cylinder 2. I searched the internet and found that other 2nd generation Honda Fit ('09-'13) owners also had spark plugs that came from the factory/ tightened to factory specification to only come loose again. I could have died or have gotten into a serious accident. Because of this horror story and being stuck on the highway for 4 hours, I will unfortunately never buy a Honda again, a brand that was supposed to be reliable.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-29
  • VIN: jhmge8h21ac
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: On 1/29/22 in Dayton OH, I was stopped and turning left out onto the road. I accelerated lightly and the left axel broke in the middle of the turn. The car was stopped in the middle of two lanes. I was able to get help and push the car back in the business driveway by keeping it in neutral. The car would make repetitive clicking sounds if I left it in park. I had it towed. Repair shop fixed issue. It was the left front axel shaft that broke. My car has about 130,000 miles on it and is a 2010 Honda Fit. It is available for inspection. I am so thankful that I wasn't on a high speed road as a car could have collided into me when I was turning left because the axle broke before I could get fully into one lane. If I had been moving at higher speeds, I definitely would have gotten in an accident. There were no warning indicators before the incident. I regularly serviced the vehicle.

  • Summary: WE PURCHASED A NEW 2010 HONDA FIT FROM DAVID MCDAVID HONDA IN IRVING, TEXAS. WE HAVE THE CAR SERVICED AT DAVID MCDAVID HONDA IN IRVING ALSO. WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE KEY LOCKS ON THIS CAR. THE FIRST FAILURE OCCURRED AT 37746 MILES. THE KEY WOULD GO ABOUT HALF WAY INTO THE DRIVER'S SIDE LOCK AND THEN WOULD JAM. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR LOCK CYLINDER. (SEE ATTACHMENT ONE TO THIS LETTER FOR THE DEALER INVOICE). AT APPROXIMATELY 54000 MILES THE SECOND FAILURE OCCURRED ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE LOCK. THE CIRCUMSTANCES WERE SIMILAR TO EARLIER FAILURE. I CALLED MY DAVID MCDAVID ADVISOR TO SEE WHETHER THE LOCK CYLINDER WAS STILL IN WARRANTY. HE TOLD ME THAT SINCE 12 MONTHS AND 12,000 MILES HAD PASSED THAT I HAD NO WARRANTY ON THE PART. I THEN WENT TO CAR TOYS LOCATED IN IRVING TO SEE WHETHER THEY COULD PUT A KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM IN THE HONDA FIT. AFTER THEIR POSITIVE ASSURANCE, I HAD THEIR SYSTEM PUT IN THE CAR. (SEE ATTACHMENT TWO TO THIS LETTER FOR CAR TOYS INVOICE DATED SEPTEMBER 10, 2018). ON JUNE 27, 2019, MY WIFE WENT TO STORE AND WHEN SHE RETURNED TO THE CAR, THE KEY WOULD ONLY GO HALF WAY INTO THE IGNITION AND THEN JAM. I WENT TO WHERE THE CAR WAS LOCATED AND TRIED TO GET THE KEY TO WORK. I HAD NO LUCK AND AFTER DISCUSSING WITH ADVISOR AT DAVID MCDAVID HONDA IN IRVING, I HIRED A WRECKER TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. MILEAGE ON THE CAR WAS 59439. 2010 Honda Fit recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 12 recalls for different components of the 2010 Honda Fit.

2020-12-10
  • Manufacturer: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.)
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Acura ILX, 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid, 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, and 2007-2008 Honda Fit vehicles with a manual transmission and 2009-2013 Honda Fit vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The drive shafts' protective coating may not have been applied properly during manufacturing, making it more susceptible to damage from road salt, or other contaminants, and potentially cause it to break.
  • Consequence: A broken drive shaft may cause a sudden loss of drive power. The vehicle could also roll away if the parking brake has not been applied before the vehicle has been exited. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the drive shafts, replacing either the left or right drive shaft, if necessary, free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk with an interim letter mailed February 2, 2021. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are P9M, PAV, BAY, TAX, CA0, and MAZ.

These vehicles are equipped with driver frontal air bag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 12, 2019. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are S5B and W59.
