Following the Caliber concept, which debuted at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the pre-production version debuted at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, with a market launch in March 2006.
The Caliber was manufactured at the Belvidere Assembly (Illinois) plant, and across its six-year model run, just over 400,000 were produced.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
- VIN: 1B3HB48B98D
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Rear subframe rusted right through control rods snapped rear end of car dropped down. Upon researching they know that this is bad and unsafe even gave a 10 year extended warranty for front and rear subframe so how long will and how many complaints before this is an actual recall. I see here in your complaints that there is a large number of complaints on this issue. How are they getting away with this and nothing being done. I will have photos also police had said if this happened while it was on interstate would have crashed and could have been fatal. The tire would have ripped right off. So not only was my safety but the safety of the others being jeopardized cause everyone just keeps looking away at this issue. I would love to know how many of these subframes have had to be replaced I bet if you do research there is not one of them out there that either should be replaced have been replaced or will need to be replaced. Stop allowing these car companies to use sub standard parts. I am sure this will fall to the wayside along with the other 100 complaints. I will try my hardest to make sure everyone knows this is a problem that the car company is fully aware of and nobody has done anything about and keep researching on how many more this has happened to and try to get everyone to file a complaint. There was NO WARNING SIGN just broke loose passenger side of car was practically on the ground the broken control arm is what held everything up. Please can we really check into this if there is a recall at least people will know the problem exist.

- Summary: The entire underneath of my car is rusted out. I was driving to work one day when someone pulled out in front of me and I had to hit the brakes. That resulted in the subframe and front drivers axel to break as I’m driving! The sunroof leaks when it rains and half the time the electricity doesn’t work on the sunroof button. My doors have completely stopped auto locking and my hazards will randomly start flashing without pushing the button. Steering is absolutely terrible, it feels like you’re skidding on ice or hydroplaning the entire drive.

- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING, THE FRONT SUBFRAME CROSSMEMBER RUSTED THROUGH, CAUSING HER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR AND SHE COULD NOT SAFELY OPERATE IT WITHOUT REPAIR. I MANAGED TO GET IT TO A FIRESTONE FOR THEM TO LOOK AT AND THEY REFERRED ME TO A DEALER AND TOLD ME NOT TO DRIVE IT ANYMORE BECAUSE IT IS UNSAFE. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT DODGE KNEW ABOUT, BUT FAILED TO NOTIFY ME ABOUT. I ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT THE PROBLEM FROM THE DEALERSHIP, WHO TOLD ME THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT COVERS THIS PROBLEM HAD EXPIRED IN 2018 AND THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF ANY REPAIRS. I OWNED THE CAR DURING THAT TIME AND I DID NOT KNOW OF THIS PROBLEM, SO I COULD NOT ACT ON GETTING IT REPAIRED. THIS NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A RECALL BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL TO KILL PEOPLE WHEN THE SUBFRAME RUSTS OUT. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IN A PARKING LOT AT THE TIME AT A RELATIVELY LOW SPEED, BUT HAD THIS HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY IT COULD HAVE KILLED HER AND MY SON, AS WELL AS OTHERS ON THE ROAD. I HAVE A 3 YEAR OLD SON AND I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE DODGE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM BEFORE MY, OR ANYONE ELSE'S FAMILY, GETS WHIPLASH FROM A REAR COLLISION. I'M REACHING OUT TO NHTSA BECAUSE, I LACK THE TOOLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO FIX IT MYSELF, AND DON'T FIND IT FAIR THAT I PAY FOR A MISTAKE THAT DODGE MADE IN MAKING THE CAR. *TR

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the R/T AWD. I absolutely love my Caliber! It's got a lot of zip, is incredibly comfortable, and I really enjoy driving it. I actually traded in my Corvette for this economical car and I couldn't be happier. I average 23-25 around town and 24-25 on the highway. I opted for the Pebble/Sand interior and Inferno Red exterior, with a sunroof, Boston sound, and Sirius. For about $21k, I'm really impressed! I think adding the upgrades and going for the 2.4L AWD probably made a big difference on the other ratings. Plus, the lifetime warranty on the drivetrain is a huge plus. I'm still learning about the car, but I have to say, the back seat is even larger than my Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo!!
-
I am a 21-year-old college student who was recently looking for my first car. Initially, I had my heart set on an Aveo, but somehow I became interested in the Caliber, even though I didn't know much about them. I ended up buying a 2008 SE model and I have to say, I absolutely love it! The ride is smooth, the stereo system is great, and it has some pretty cool features. I think that if I ever decide to trade it in, it would be for a newer model Caliber. It's just awesome!

Your black 2008 Dodge Caliber SRT4 sounds like an outstanding car! With only ~2900 miles on the odometer and safely stored in your garage during the winter, it's clear that you take great care of it. As the last of the old Chrysler designed/engineered cars from the 80s prior to the Fiat buyout, it's definitely a unique find. Mopar fans should definitely consider getting their hands on one, especially since the SRT4 has been discontinued for 2010. It's a one-of-a-kind car that will most likely become a collector's item in 20 years, similar to the FWD Shelby cars of the 1980s. Great buy!
-
Congratulations on your recent purchase of a Caliber SRT-4! After driving 300 miles, I can understand why you are amazed that Dodge is selling this car at such an affordable price. The engine and transmission are exceptional and can easily compete with those in $40K+ cars. Although the interior has a bit too much plastic, you can easily fix this by adding a wood dash kit, even if it is an aftermarket product. The ride is firm and confident, yet not too harsh at highway cruising speed. The steering wheel mounted radio controls are a nice standard feature, and although the speedometer is somewhat small and takes some getting used to, it is still a great car. In summary, you get the performance engine, drive train, and suspension of a $35K+ car, with the interior of a $15K car, all for just over $20K. This is definitely a best buy for anyone who wants Zcar/M3 range track times for under 25K.

Your black metallic 1.8L SXT sounds like an amazing vehicle! It's only been a month, but it's already surpassed all your other vehicles, including a Cadillac. It's tough, solid, quiet, and comfortable, making it perfect for getting around in the Wyoming winter at 7,000 feet. The ground clearance is great, and the pedals and stick are right where you need them (especially since you ordered the manual). With 31 mpg on the highway and around 26 in town, it's also very fuel-efficient. Even when it's 20 below zero, it starts up with no problem. You must be thrilled with how much you're getting out of this vehicle, especially considering the price. It definitely outperforms the Matrix, Mazda 3, and Vibe in terms of value and style!

This car excels at providing reliability and room for our newborn. The CVT is very smooth, which is great for a sleeping baby. However, it has a slow throttle response time, especially noticeable when pulling out into traffic. Additionally, it has bad blind spots and makes a drumming noise when you roll down a back window going over 30 mph. Despite these drawbacks, the 2.0l engine and CVT provide a solid driving experience.
Berta Kihn 2024-11-07
This car is a decent option for a daily commuter or as a first car for a new driver. While it may not be the most powerful, it gets the job done and is reliable. The interior may not be the most luxurious, but it is functional and the radio and air conditioning work well. One thing to keep in mind is that the exterior styling can make it difficult to keep clean, but overall it's a good car with a great warranty.

Although I have had some issues with my Dodge Caliber, I have gained valuable experience in maintaining and repairing cars. I have replaced the alternator twice, both thermostats, and fixed the A/C. Currently, I am addressing an oil leak. While these issues may not be typical of Dodge cars, I have learned the importance of researching any car I purchase in the future. Despite these mechanical challenges, the Caliber drives well and I am satisfied with its handling.

The suspension on these cars could use some improvement. I have a manual and have had some trouble with shifting. I've had to replace control arms, wheel bearings, and shocks 2-3 times, and now my sub frame is wrecked. Unfortunately, the first thing to go was the master cylinder. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend this car, it has been a bit of a money pit for me.

I recently purchased a 2008 Caliber with only 18k miles on it for $10000, which seemed like a great deal at the time. Unfortunately, within just 4 months, I had to take it to the dealership five times for various issues. Despite having the PCM/TCM update done three times, the computer still wouldn't hold it. I also had to replace both front struts, lower left control arm, the multifunction switch, and airbag clock sensor. Although the transmission has been making a noise for a while, the dealership won't look at it because they don't have much experience with the CVT. Even the rear struts started making noises, and the whole car feels and sounds like it's going to fall apart, despite only having 24k miles on it. I'm disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing another Dodge in the future. While the gas mileage was about 24 combined MPG, it wasn't as good as I had hoped.
