Ford F-450 sd problems

ford logo

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common Ford F-450 sd problems

The Ford F-450 Super Duty is a heavy-duty pickup truck that is known for its impressive towing and payload capacities. However, like any vehicle, it can have its fair share of problems. Here are some common issues that Ford F-450 Super Duty owners have reported:

Faulty Transmission
One of the most common issues reported by Ford F-450 Super Duty owners is a faulty transmission. This problem can manifest in various ways, such as the truck not shifting properly or experiencing transmission failure altogether. In some cases, the transmission may need to be replaced entirely, which can be a costly repair. This issue appears to be particularly prevalent in the 2020 model year, as one owner reported having to replace the transmission less than a year after purchasing the truck.

Rough Ride
Another common complaint among Ford F-450 Super Duty owners is a rough ride. This can be especially noticeable when the truck is loaded down with cargo or towing a trailer. While some owners have reported that the ride becomes smoother over time, others have found that it remains a persistent issue. This can be a significant concern for those who use their F-450 Super Duty for long-haul trips or heavy-duty towing.

Exhaust Issues
Exhaust issues are also a common problem for Ford F-450 Super Duty owners. This can include leaks in the exhaust system, as well as problems with the muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, and heat shields. These issues can lead to decreased performance and fuel efficiency, as well as potential safety hazards. In some cases, these issues may be covered under warranty, but in other cases, they may require costly repairs.

Suspension Issues
Suspension issues are another common problem for Ford F-450 Super Duty owners. This can include problems with the coil springs, which can cause the truck to bottom out or bounce excessively. In some cases, the coil springs may even pop off their pedestals, which can be a significant safety hazard. These issues can be particularly prevalent in models with larger wheels and tires, as well as those that are used for heavy-duty towing.

Sunroof Issues
Sunroof issues are also a common problem for Ford F-450 Super Duty owners. This can include problems with the sunroof not working properly, as well as leaks and other issues. These problems can be especially frustrating for those who use their F-450 Super Duty for long-haul trips, as a malfunctioning sunroof can make the cab feel cramped and uncomfortable.

In conclusion, while the Ford F-450 Super Duty is a powerful and capable heavy-duty pickup truck, it is not without its issues. Owners have reported problems with the transmission, ride quality, exhaust system, suspension, and sunroof, among other things. These issues can range from minor inconveniences to significant safety hazards, and in some cases, they may require costly repairs. As with any vehicle, it is important for Ford F-450 Super Duty owners to stay on top of regular maintenance and address any issues as soon as they arise.

What is the most common problem with 6.7 Power Stroke?

Injection Pump Failure

Your engine's injection pump regulates how much fuel is sent to the engine. Injection pump failure is a well-documented concern with Ford's 6.7 Powerstroke.

What was Ford's worst diesel engine?

The 6.4-liter Powerstroke engine was very short-lived. It was put in Ford trucks beginning in 2007 for the 2008 model year and the last production year was 2011 for the 2010 model year. The 6.4 Powerstroke came after the 6.0 Powerstroke, which was widely panned for its problems and poor performance.

What year Ford f450 is best?

The Best Model Years to Buy a Ford F-450 Super Duty

With the 2022, you would only pay, on average, 100% of the price as new, with 100% of the vehicle's useful life remaining. The 2021 and 2019 model years are also attractive years for the F-450 Super Duty, and provide a relatively good value.

What year 6.7 Power Stroke to avoid?

Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke Common Problems

Issues with the Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke are most pronounced in the first generation (2011-2014), but some problems have transcended generations. The injection pump could be trouble in pre-2020 engines.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-07
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-11
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT7NE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: on 6/7/24, while driving around the Baltimore beltway towing a 44' RV in rush-hour traffic a battery warning light appeared. Within 1 min, the vehicle dashboard information went out and the engine stalled. I immediately put the vehicle in neutral and was able to coast to the shoulder without advantage of turn signals on either the RV or truck as a result. Once there I popped the hood and was able to get out to open it, however, there was a fire and my fingers were singed. After opening the hood, I noticed a full engine fire. I yelled for my wife to get out ASAP. I was able to extinguish the fire (thanks to the RV extinguisher), however, a secondary fire started, and a Samaritan help extinguish that fire. A fire department truck appeared, and they cut the batter cable since it seemed to have started the fire. The vehicle was towed back to the dealership where it was purchased. The insurance agent stated a mechanic had informed him; they believe it was the battery that was the cause. All vehicle maintenance was conducted by the dealership due to warranty AND an extended vehicle maintenance plan purchased at the time of sale. Ford has failed to acknowledge any problems with the vehicle and refused to honor the warranty.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-20
  • VIN: 1FTXW43R68E
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2008 Ford F-450. The contact stated while driving at approximately 65 MPH, the transfer case exploded, and the front windshield shattered. No injuries were sustained; however, several other vehicles sustained cosmetic damage. No warning light was illuminated. A Police report was filed. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to an independent mechanic for a diagnostic test. The contact was informed that the transfer case, drive shaft assembly, fuel injection pump, fuel lines, and transmission wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and confirmed that there was no recall associated with the failure. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 164,176.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT0NE
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Trailer brake controller will randomly announce "trailer wiring fault" and lose all brakes. Brake power will momentarily show requested power then cut off. Trailer has been confirmed ok, works 100% on two other trucks, ground continuity is 100% via plug only, brake wiring and resistance all in spec for 3 Dexter 7000# axles (electric drum) Will randomly cut out after working for days. Usually when needed most. Dealer claims "cannot duplicate" had been to dealer 4x for it, to include a software update. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering Automotive Concentration from what used to be GMs in house engineering school. (GMI/Kettering) To say I'm intimately familiar with how this should work is an understatement. Also, the manual slider control should just provide requested power to brakes, bypassing any BXM/TCM interlocks. In aviation, if I use a backup brake it bypasses antiskid, anything else. Towing a 21,000 pound trailer in the Mountains when this thing decides to not work is sketchy. It will eventually cause an accident given that it's a widespread issue known to people but magically no recall. If this was an Airbus 321 or Boeing 737 we'd have an Airworthiness Directive at a minimum.

The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the battery junction box harness had failed. The dealer replaced the battery junction box harness assembly, engine module, fuse junction box, and the wiring assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact related the failure to TSB Number: 20-2298. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. • Date Complaint: 2024-07-16
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT2NE
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I was towing my 5th wheel trailer on a highway and up an incline. Almost at the top of the hill a notification appeared on the dash screen stating, "low power mode". As I was on top of a hill, towing a trailer, on a highway, and with no available offramps, I coasted down the hill trying to find a place to pull off of the highway. At the bottom of the hill I heard a loud noise from the engine, noticed smoke in my rearview mirror, and lost all power to the vehicle including power steering. I managed to pull off to the side of the busy highway. I exited the vehicle and removed my kids from the car, moving them up a hill on the side of the highway as it was the safest place I could find. It was at that point I noticed flames coming from the right font front wheel well. I quickly opened my trailer, grabbed my fire extinguisher, and doused the flames. Had I not acted quickly the entire truck, trailer, and hillside would have caught fire. The vehicle is still at the dealership waiting on Ford Motor Company to approve the repairs. The vehicle has approximately 26,000 miles on it and is unmodified.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-26
  • Date Complaint: 2024-02-07
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DM6RE
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? High beam "projector style" LED headlights have bright lines that are very distracting when driving at night. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Driver's vision is impacted. They are particularly bad on curvy, mountainous terrain. The bright lines produced by the high beams impair vision similar to how a movie with flashing lights might affect a person. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, by 2 dealers. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, I am trying to get the manufacturer to do so. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No.

  • Summary: Vehicle does not remember its previous settings: The following features may or may not be on, even if you have actively went through and turned them off or on. Local dealership has had this truck over 4 times and for days at a time. Nothing has been resolved of these safety functions. Rear automatic emergency braking Engine brake Lane departure warning (which actually jerks steering wheel if it is on and you get close to the edge of the lane) Lane centering assistance These safety sensitive functions turn themselves on and off, no matter the amount of computer updates through the dealer. Ford F-450 sd 2022
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-29
  • Date Complaint: 2024-01-31
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DT0NE
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Getting this message “Trailer Left TurnLamps Fault Check Lamps”. This is issue is intermittent but it causes the trailer lights, turn signal, stop light and warning lights on the left side to be very very dim and not visible. The lights would be good when trailer is hooked up but it will go dim and not work properly on the road. Those driving behind would not be able to see turn light while moving lanes and possibly causing an accident scenario. Gone to two different dealers and they cannot recreate the issue with their equipment. Called Ford twice to report the issue and concerns. The trailer has been checked by the dealer and showed no issues when hooked up to an independent battery. Have changed the fuse twice but they were not burned out so it was not a fuse issue. Apparently there are no current recalls for my VIN.
Ford F-450 sd 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-10
  • Date Complaint: 2023-12-11
  • VIN: 1FTWW3BR6AE
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: LT275/70R18 E While driving west on I10 near Thermal California, the rear driver side tire lost 100% of its thread at a 65 MPH speed. When the thread separated from the tire it damaged fender area of the truck extensively and caused a violent throw and shake of the rear of the truck. The interesting fact is that even after losing 100% of the thread he tire steel belts exposed the tire stayed inflated at 80PSI. This fact is know because I was actively monitoring TPMS tire pressure while safely pulling over. The tries were inspected and pressure levels were checked prior taking off for the trip to Thermal CA to pick up the family 5th wheel camper. These tires supposed to have a thread life of 60,000 miles, mine had reached 32000 miles. At this point there is a huge concern and low confidence in Goodyear brand tire and this may happen to the other tires on my truck and may happen under the load of the 35 foot family RV. No one was injured, and no one reproduced this problem and the manufacturer hasn't yet inspected the tire. As it was stated there was zero warning from TPMs system prior to the failure.
