The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 2008 Ford F-450 sd problems

The 2008 Ford F-450 Super Duty (SD) is a powerful and capable heavy-duty truck, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Intercooler Couplers: The intercooler couplers can blow out, pop off, or fail, causing a significant loss of power due to the engine running naturally aspirated instead of turbocharged . To prevent this issue, it's essential to ensure that the clamps and couplers are in good condition and securely fastened.
  • EGR Cooler: The EGR cooler can fail, leading to various problems, including engine overheating and reduced performance. Aftermarket replacement kits, such as Bulletproof Diesel's EGR Cooler Kit or AFE Power's Bladerunner EGR Combo, can help address this issue.
  • Fuel System Failure and K16 Injection Pump Self-Destruction: The fuel system in the 6.4L Powerstroke engine can fail, leading to the self-destruction of the K16 injection pump. This issue can be costly to repair and requires raising the cab to access the engine.
  • Poor Fuel Economy: Some owners have reported poor fuel economy with the 2008 Ford F-450 SD, which can be attributed to various factors, including driving habits, vehicle weight, and engine efficiency.
  • Clogged Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): The DPF can become clogged, leading to reduced engine performance and increased emissions. Regular maintenance and cleaning can help prevent this issue.
  • Oil Dilution: Oil dilution can occur in the 6.4L Powerstroke engine, leading to reduced engine performance and increased wear and tear. Regular oil changes and maintenance can help prevent this issue.
  • Leaking Radiator: A leaking radiator can lead to engine overheating and reduced performance. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent this issue.
  • Cracked Pistons: The 6.4L Powerstroke engine is known for cracking pistons, which can lead to more significant issues if left unchecked. Regular engine inspections and maintenance can help prevent this issue.
  • Cracked Up-Pipes: The up-pipes can crack, leading to exhaust leaks and reduced engine performance. Regular inspections and maintenance can help prevent this issue.

These are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 2008 Ford F-450 SD. Regular maintenance, inspections, and timely repairs can help prevent many of these issues and ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-02-01
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I TRAVEL FOR WORK AND DRIVE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF RENTAL CARS. I HAVE HAD THE FOLLOWING OCCUR IN MORE MODELS THAN I CAN REMEMBER. VEHICLE ACCELERATES WHEN YOU APPLY THE BRAKES. ROOT CAUSE: THE ELEVATION / SPACING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE ACCELERATOR. OPERATOR ERROR CONTRIBUTES TO THE PROBLEM ALSO. PEOPLE HAVE A TENDENCY TO ROLL THEIR FOOT FROM THE GAS PEDAL TO THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. DEPENDING ON THE ANGLE OF THEIR FOOT, THE EDGE OF THEIR SHOE WILL HANG OVER THE GAS PEDAL. WHEN THEY APPLY THE BRAKE THEY ALSO APPLY THE GAS. THE ENGINE TORQUE OVER COMES THE BRAKE FRICTION AND THE CAR ACCELERATES. MOST OF THE TIME WHEN THIS HAPPENS I CAN REMOVE MY FOOT, RELOCATE IT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SAFELY STOP. SEVERAL TIMES MY SITUATION REQUIRED ME TO HOLD THE BRAKE / GAS PEDALS IN POSITION AND QUICKLY USE MY LEFT FOOT TO APPLY THE BRAKE TO PREVENT AN ACCIDENT. WEARING MY HEAVY BOOTS WITH A LARGE SOLE INCREASES THE FREQUENCIES OF THESE INCIDENTS. *TR
