2002 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.
The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.
The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Overall, we really like this truck for its roominess, versatility, and comfort. The Quad Cab is great for families with kids or an extra adult or two. The back seats three kids comfortably or two adults with good head and legroom. Its quiet and comfortable ride is well appreciated on longer trips. Although the gas mileage could be better, given its weight and size, it is better than some full-size, regular cab trucks.

I was looking for a vehicle that could do it all - commute, haul the family, tow, and go off-road - and I found just that in this truck. From the moment I got behind the wheel, I knew it was the right choice. The cab is well laid out and the seating is comfortable, with plenty of room for me (even at 6'2

With 51600 miles, mostly on the highway, I have to say that I might not buy this car again. The gas mileage for the 4.7 V8 is terrible in mixed driving, averaging only 14.6 mpg over the last 3 tanks. However, the interior is very comfortable and the rear seats are as roomy as our Impala. I did have an issue with the steering failing at 48575 miles, but luckily it happened on an empty street at only 25 mph, not on the interstate 45 minutes earlier. Dodge did fix it for free, even though it was out of warranty, but I did have to borrow a car for two days. The only downside is that the floor tray doesn't allow for the middle passenger's feet. The bed length is the same with the gate down as my Ranger was with the gate down, but it could be longer. Overall, it's a decent car, but there are some things to consider before purchasing.

The only issue with this vehicle is its gas mileage. While it is a V8, it could still achieve a higher mpg average.

Hello! We purchased this truck last November from a private owner to replace our old 1988 Dakota. Unfortunately, the '88 had started to die on the road. However, we have been extremely satisfied with our new truck as it has not given us any trouble at all, and the previous owner had the same experience. The ride is smooth as silk, the seat is very comfortable, and it drives well. It's a great truck with plenty of space, although the back seat is not the most comfortable. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase!

I had the truck for about 8 months. It's just what I wanted - 4 doors that act like a car with the kids and a bed to move stuff around. The only drawback is the gas mileage, but I knew that before I purchased the truck. Overall, it's a very good truck, although there is a little wind noise on the highway.

This is an update. I bought the car for 9k when it had 27k miles on it in December 2007. Unfortunately, the motor started having issues at 51k miles and needed the bearings and crank to be replaced. Despite my meticulous attention and use of Mobi1, the motor failed again just after 8k miles. I replaced it with a 30k junkyard motor, but then the transmission failed just two weeks later! In the past 30k miles, I have also had to replace the AC compressor, full exhaust, front hubs, power steering hoses, starter (twice!), brakes, rotors, and even the fan control module under the glove box which caught fire. I was disappointed when the dealer laughed at me when I was just one k over the 50k warranty. However, I managed to replace the crank and bearings myself. I also needed to replace the original brake pins with oversized ones as they were worn and too loose. I even had to replace 4 oxygen sensors! AHHHH

I have experienced several issues with my Dakota, including shimmying, stalling, rattling, and poor power on takeoff. Despite being told by supposed 'experts' that these problems are normal for this truck, I know that this is not the case. Additionally, there is significant slack in the drive-train and my gas mileage is much worse than advertised. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I have had issues with a new Dakota - both my 1993 and 2002 models have been problematic. As a result, I have lost faith in Chrysler products and will not be purchasing another one.

I was disappointed that this truck did not meet my expectations. It had several issues with the electrical, air, and engine. In comparison to a Toyota, it had no resale value and was not dependable. Additionally, the service department was too lax in my experience. The truck consumed a lot of gas and required premium fuel, making it as expensive as a luxury SUV. Overall, I was sadly disappointed with this vehicle and cannot wait to get rid of it. As the other reviewer mentioned, it was good for the first 20k miles, but after that, it was not reliable. Dodge, I believe you can do better. Although it looks cool, that is not enough.

This truck has been overall very reliable. Although there have been some issues with the brakes and ball joints, which were a hassle to replace even with a recall, the drivetrain and major mechanical components have never caused any problems. The fuel economy is disappointing at an average of 15mpg, and the 3.9 V6 engine lacks the power needed to move or pass with authority, especially with the heavier quad-cab. However, the ride is smooth for a truck at highway speeds, although it can be quite noisy. I upgraded the sound system just to hear the music better. After 50k miles, it still runs great. If I had to do it again, I would have opted for the V8 engine for more power. Overall, this has been one of the most reliable vehicles I have owned, but a truck definitely needs more power.
