The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

I went back into the lube shop to see what was going on, they said there was no leakage or issues there but there was hardly any oil in my car and that it was probably burning oil. I searched for issues with my 2013 MDX burning oil and an issue in 2019 with clogged oil control rings came up but said that the warranty extension would only be good to 2021. I found out this will be $5k to fix. I was never alerted of this issue and would like to submit a complaint about not being notified that this was even an issue in my car. I would like Acura to fix my vehicle since I never received the alert that this was a known issue in my car.

Finally the CMBS warning light came on permanently. I took my car to Acura Dealership for repairs. They informed me that it was a software issue and update of the software should resolve this problem.

SO ACURA WOULD NOT PAY FOR THE REPAIR NECESSARY TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. AFTER THIS I HAD AN NEW OIL CHANGE DONE AND AFTER TRAVELING 4,260 MILES AND BEFORE I WAS DUE FOR ANOTHER OIL CHANGE THE LOW LEVEL INDICATOR CAME ON. SURE ENOUGH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF DCH HONDA IN OLD BRIDGE, NJ VERIFIED THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF OIL. THE DIPSTICK WAS NOT REGISTERING ANY OIL ON IT. CAR CAN'T GET STARTED EVEN WITH JUMPER FROM A TOWING COMPANY. THE CAR WAS TOWED BACK TO LOS GATOS ACURA AND FEW HOURS LATER WE WERE TOLD THE THE ENTIRE ENGINE IS GONE. WE TRIED FOR 15 MINS AT LEAST TO GET THE SEAT BELT UNLOCKED AND EVERY TIME IT SEEMED TO GET TIGHTER. MY 4 YEAR OLD HAD NIGHTMARES THAT EVENING ABOUT THE SEAT BELTS AND RED MARKS ON HIS SHOULDER. - Summary: A 2013 ACURA MDX VEHICLE (ADVANCE MODEL) WAS BOUGHT IN THE ACURA DEALER ON JULY 27, 2013. STARTING ON OCTOBER 2013, STRONG SMELL OF FUMES HAS SPORADICALLY BEEN SENSED INSIDE THE VEHICLE, MAKING IT UNCOMFORTABLE TO BREATHE. SINCE NOVEMBER 5, 2013, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP (THREE TIMES) TO TARGET THE CAUSE OF THE FUMES. THE SMELL OF FUMES INSIDE THE CABIN ARE SENSED NOT ONLY WHILE DRIVING AT 10MPH, 40MPH, OR 60MPH BUT ALSO ON SHORT DISTANCE RIDES, DURING RAINY DAYS AND WHILE WAITING FOR A LIGHT TO CHANGE (THE SMELL WAS ALSO SENSED OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE WHEN THE WINDOWS WERE DOWN). ON THE SECOND SERVICE APPOINTMENT, THE SHOP VERIFIED THE A/C SYSTEM AND THE RECIRCULATION CASE OF THE AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM WAS SEALED; BUT IT DID NOT CORRECT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE SPORADIC SMELL OF FUMES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE DECEMBER 23 AND NOT RETURNED SINCE THEY DO NOT FIND WHY THE VEHICLE EMITS SUCH STRONG FUMES THAT SURPASSED THE A/C SYSTEM. - Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2013-2023 Honda Accord, Civic Coupe, Civic Sedan, Civic Hatchback, Civic Type R, CR-V, HR-V, Ridgeline, Odyssey, Acura ILX, MDX, MDX Hybrid, RDX, RLX, TLX, 2019-2022 Honda Insight, Passport, 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid, 2018-2019 Honda Clarity PHEV, Fit, and 2015-2020 Honda Accord Hybrid, Pilot, Acura NSX vehicles. The fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
- Consequence: Fuel pump failure can cause an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed September 6, 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are KGC and KGD. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall numbers 21V-215 and 20V-314.

We looked at various car models from Mercedes (GL), Lexus (GX), Toyota, and Land Rover. Our main requirements were to have enough space to fit a full-size cello in the back, accommodate 3 kids, and have the capability to seat 7 people occasionally for carpooling. We also wanted a car that was comfortable to drive and ride in, with advanced technology to ensure passenger safety. After careful consideration, we decided on the Acura MDX with its Advance and Entertainment features and spacious interior. Although the Mercedes GL was a close contender with good room, it was much more expensive when fully equipped and had a less impressive reliability history based on online feedback. The Lexus GX was comfortable for the driver, but the passengers (especially the kids) found the second row cramped and the third row incredibly cramped, even for children.

Hi there! I've been driving this SUV for a little over 2 1/2 years now and I must say, the performance is still terrific! However, I've been experiencing some issues with the front brakes and front end lately. I've already replaced the rotors and pads, but there's still some front end shake on braking. Additionally, there's a vibration that developed about 9 months ago in the front end at 75-85 MPH, which the dealer can't seem to sort out. Despite these issues, it's still a very comfortable vehicle and I've put about 20K on the odometer. Any other issues have been covered by the CPO warranty, which is great. The gas mileage isn't the best unless you baby the throttle, but it's also a performance SUV. Some of the trim and the headlights are starting to show some age, but overall it's been a great vehicle over the past 2 plus years. If I can work out the bugs before the CPO Warranty expires, I'll probably hold onto it. If not, I might trade it in for something larger as our needs have changed since we purchased it. I'm thinking of looking into a pre-2018 Expedition EL or Suburban. By the way, I traded in the MDX and now drive a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic crew cab hemi. I couldn't get the front end straightened out and it was bugging me. The Ram is actually quieter riding and gets better gas mileage. Ha!!! The MDX will still put a smile on your face in the twisties.

This is our 4th MDX and probably not our last. Not one issue with any of them. They just keep getting better and, in my opinion, they are the best SUV value on the market.

I have taken my MDX 2012 to the dealership several times to complain of a terrible grinding sound during low speeds and when coming off the highway. Despite being told by the dealership that the car is fine, I am confident that the sound is indicative of a problem that needs to be addressed. Additionally, when turning at low speeds, the car sometimes makes a loud thud and clunk, particularly after rain or bad weather, when in reverse or parking. These issues require attention and I am confident that the dealership will take the necessary steps to resolve them.

I used to own a 2009 Acura TL and I really miss it. It was a gorgeous, sleek, and quick car that was also very comfortable and easy to keep clean. The technology, including the navigation system, was terrific. However, the 2012 MDX SUV was not as impressive. It felt like a boat and lacked the quickness that I loved in my TL. While it was comfortable and functional, it didn't have the same wow factor. The steering was fine but not very agile. The interior was light, which I liked, but it felt a bit monotone. I felt like a soccer mom, even though I don't have kids.

The fuel efficiency could be improved by implementing cylinder deactivation technology, similar to what is used in the Pilot. Additionally, considering a diesel engine option, like the one offered in the new Audi, could increase efficiency by up to a third. The voice technology and Bluetooth phone link could benefit from some improvements to make them more user-friendly. It's worth noting that some rattles are present in the car, which could be addressed. The AC and fan direction controls could be made more visible when the HVAC is turned on. Lastly, the buttons could be made easier to use.

While the MDX may not be considered a luxury SUV, there are still some positive aspects to the vehicle such as its engine and handling. However, it seems that there are some areas that could be improved upon such as the quality of audio and ergonomics. Additionally, there have been some issues with rattling after a couple of years and the mileage is not as good as other SUVs of similar size. Once my lease is over, I may consider returning to a German brand, but I appreciate the experience with the MDX.

It seems like the price point could be improved. When I purchased my 2012 MDX in 2017, I was hoping for a high-quality 3rd row SUV. While it was in good condition, I found that the design and controls were lacking. The buttons were cramped and poorly positioned, and the multi-information screen was difficult to navigate. Additionally, the interior lights and door locks required a lot of manual reading to figure out. The driver's seat was also quite high, making it difficult to get in and out of the car. Despite these issues, I appreciate the effort put into the car's wood grain panel. However, I did find the electronic throttle to be a bit dangerous, as it caused hesitation when accelerating. Overall, I found my previous car, a 2008 Lexus RX 350, to be a better option in terms of quality and fuel efficiency. Despite this, I do appreciate the MDX's 3rd row seat. I have decided to trade it in before the 6-month mark.
