2013 Acura Mdx problems

The Acura MDX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by the Japanese automaker Honda under its luxury Acura division since 2000. The alphanumeric moniker stands for "Multi-Dimensional" luxury. It has ranked as the second-best selling mid-size luxury SUV after the Lexus RX in the U.S.
The MDX is the first luxury crossover SUV to have standard third-row seating, and shares its platform with the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was made available with an eight person seating configuration, while the MDX exclusively seats seven, with two seating positions in the third row. The MDX was introduced on October 5, 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it was made to replace the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) which was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the vehicle went on sale in Japan and Australia as the Honda MDX; sales with Honda badges ended with the introduction of the second generation three years later.
First generation (YD1; 2001)
Derived from Honda's Global mid-size platform which underpins cars like the Honda Accord, Acura TL, TSX and Odyssey, it is powered by a J35A3 3.5 L SOHC 24 valve V6 engine with VTEC. Curb weight is 4,451 lb (2,019 kg), with a 106.3 in (2,700 mm) wheelbase and 8 in (200 mm) of ground clearance. The cargo floor can flip up to provide two additional seats. The vehicle is designed to hold 7 passengers, but the third row seats are small and only seat two, in contrast to the Odyssey and Pilot whose third row holds three passengers.
The vehicle features an automatic four wheel drive system (named VTM-4) that engages during off the line acceleration as well as when wheel slippage is detected. Additionally, the system offers a lock mode which can be activated and operated at low speeds and provides permanent 4WD and the equivalent of a locked rear differential; designed for climbing steep hills and getting out of stuck situations. To reduce drivetrain noise and increase fuel efficiency, the system runs as front wheel drive during normal cruising. The VTM-4 AWD system in the MDX has the same design as the VTM-4 systems found in the Honda Pilot and Honda Ridgeline. It is different than Honda's "RealTime AWD" system in the Honda CR-V and other models in that it can lock and it attempts to predict when traction will be lost and apply power to all four wheels before slippage occurs (by monitoring throttle inputs).
The navigation system and DVD entertainment system (also popular on other Honda/Acura models, such as the CR-V and Odyssey) options were mutually exclusive in the 2002 model. Both could be ordered at the same time since the 2003 model. The navigation option comes with a backup camera since the 2003 model. Since 2005, the navigation system featured information from Zagat about restaurants and other points of interest. The 2003 model was rated as Ultra Low Emission Vehicle. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimates 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) highway and 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) city.
The first two model years' 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 240 hp (179 kW) and 245 lb⋅ft (332 N⋅m) of torque from 3000 to 5000 rpm. For the 2003 model, the engine was improved to produce 20 hp (15 kW) more power than the earlier models, and the wheel designs were updated. The 2004 through 2006 engine received a modest increase in power and produces 265 hp (198 kW) and 253 lb⋅ft (343 N⋅m). The 2004 model is credited with a top speed of 137 mph, and a 0-60 time of 7.1 seconds. The 2004 model features dual tail pipes instead of the single pipe in earlier models, side curtain airbags, new head lights and tail lights, and new wheels. Some chrome trimmings on the 2004 model use matte finish to distinguish from the polished shiny finish on earlier models. Little changed for the MDX during the 2006 model year with a few minor revisions to the vehicle's chrome and faux wood interior trim which could now be had with a dark grey wood (as opposed to reddish wood on earlier models), and also a black dash and steering wheel in tan interiors.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-07
- VIN: 2HNYD2H68DH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I changed the oil in my car with synthetic 4k miles ago. About 1k miles ago I started getting an error that said low oil level. I went back into the lube shop to see what was going on, they said there was no leakage or issues there but there was hardly any oil in my car and that it was probably burning oil. I searched for issues with my 2013 MDX burning oil and an issue in 2019 with clogged oil control rings came up but said that the warranty extension would only be good to 2021. I found out this will be $5k to fix. I was never alerted of this issue and would like to submit a complaint about not being notified that this was even an issue in my car. I would like Acura to fix my vehicle since I never received the alert that this was a known issue in my car.

- VIN: 2HNYD2H30DH
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AFFECTING MY VEHICLE FROM ACURA (2013 MDX) I TOOK THE CAR AS INSTRUCTED TO BRIDGEWATER ACURA AND THEY PERFORMED AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST. ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER THE CAR HAD TO CONSUME AT LEAST 1 QUART OF OIL PER 1,000 MILES. THE DEALER STATED THAT MY CAR SHOWED THAT MY CAR CONSUMED 1 QUART AT THE FIRST 1,000 MILES, AND 1/2 QUART EACH TIME AT THE FOLLOWING 3 -1,000 MILE MARK. SO ACURA WOULD NOT PAY FOR THE REPAIR NECESSARY TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. AFTER THIS I HAD AN NEW OIL CHANGE DONE AND AFTER TRAVELING 4,260 MILES AND BEFORE I WAS DUE FOR ANOTHER OIL CHANGE THE LOW LEVEL INDICATOR CAME ON. SURE ENOUGH THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT OF DCH HONDA IN OLD BRIDGE, NJ VERIFIED THAT MY CAR WAS OUT OF OIL. THE DIPSTICK WAS NOT REGISTERING ANY OIL ON IT. I HAD AT THAT TIME AN OIL CHANGE DONE TO SAVE MY ENGINE EVEN IF ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDATION AND CAR COMPUTER I WAS NOT DUE FOR ONE FOR ANOTHER 3,000 MILES. MY CAR IS OBVIOUSLY BURNING MORE OIL THAN EXPECTED AT 77,000 MILES ON THE ENGINE. I AM NOT AN AGGRESSIVE DRIVER AND DON'T IDLE THE CAR. I SUSPECT THE TEST WAS NOT DOCUMENTED CORRECTLY SINCE I AM CONSUMING CLOSE TO 5 QUARTS OF OIL PER 4,260 TRAVELED MILES. I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A NEW TEST DONE AND PROPERLY WITNESSED BY ME THIS TIME.

STARTING ON OCTOBER 2013, STRONG SMELL OF FUMES HAS SPORADICALLY BEEN SENSED INSIDE THE VEHICLE, MAKING IT UNCOMFORTABLE TO BREATHE. SINCE NOVEMBER 5, 2013, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE SHOP (THREE TIMES) TO TARGET THE CAUSE OF THE FUMES. THE SMELL OF FUMES INSIDE THE CABIN ARE SENSED NOT ONLY WHILE DRIVING AT 10MPH, 40MPH, OR 60MPH BUT ALSO ON SHORT DISTANCE RIDES, DURING RAINY DAYS AND WHILE WAITING FOR A LIGHT TO CHANGE (THE SMELL WAS ALSO SENSED OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE WHEN THE WINDOWS WERE DOWN). ON THE SECOND SERVICE APPOINTMENT, THE SHOP VERIFIED THE A/C SYSTEM AND THE RECIRCULATION CASE OF THE AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) SYSTEM WAS SEALED; BUT IT DID NOT CORRECT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE SPORADIC SMELL OF FUMES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE DECEMBER 23 AND NOT RETURNED SINCE THEY DO NOT FIND WHY THE VEHICLE EMITS SUCH STRONG FUMES THAT SURPASSED THE A/C SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE HAS HARDLY BEEN USED DUE TO THE SAFETY AND HEALTH CONCERN. AS OF TODAY, THE PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DETECTED NOR CORRECTED. *TR

I recently traded in my 2009 RL for the 2012 MDX. I was looking for more space and was willing to give up some technology to achieve it. I now feel like I have a win/win situation. I have the elbow room I was seeking and don't feel like I've given up any significant features. The navigation screen is now visible even in the day or with my sunglasses on, and the voice command system is more reliable and logical. The sound system seems just as good, and I now have hard drive storage for CDs. The power and acceleration seem better, and the interior has high-quality materials. It is a little thirstier by about 2 miles/gal, but overall, I'm very happy with my decision. The only thing I miss is the keyless ignition.
-
I'll keep this short and sweet. The gen2 MDX drives much smaller than its size suggests. Despite its high ground clearance, it can rival many sport sedans, especially with the Advance package that comes with the Active Damper System (ADS) in sport mode. Its overall dimensions (length, height, width, and track) give it a wide, stocky, and aggressive stance that handles very well. The J37A1 engine is no slouch either. While the 0-60 split isn't fantastic at 7.1 seconds, it has more than enough torque for brisk highway merging and passes. Bear in mind that it is a high-revving engine, so you really have to get it above 3500rpm to let it purr. The most annoying thing about the MDX is the shift mapping on the transmission. It constantly tries to upshift prematurely, sometimes to the point that it seems something is wrong with the powertrain. However, I always have it in Sportshift mode with the paddles engaged, so I have full control over when the transmission gears up. While rated at 16/21mpg, you will rarely see better than 18mpg if you use the paddles routinely. But, this is the price of having a sufficiently powered 4,550-lb vehicle that can hit the twisties better than the majority of crossovers, and better than some sedans. The SH-AWD is fantastic and one of only a few torque-vectoring 4WD systems currently available. The only vehicle in the same class that has a comparable 4WD is the Audi Q7. The X5, RX350, XC90, and JX35/37 have atrocious 4WD/AWD systems that do nothing but add additional cost to the vehicle. The SH-AWD is highly advanced and is an incredible feature to have. Lastly, wind noise is minimal as the aerodynamics are quite good. The engineers at Honda have put a lot of effort into making this vehicle comfortable at highway speeds, resulting in a very smooth ride. If you are a performance-oriented driver, we highly recommend the Advance trim. You may also want to consider upgrading to the ATLP or RV6 J-pipe, which are $500 bolt-ons that can add 15-25awhp, translating into 25-40bhp. With a custom CAI, resonator delete, and high-flow rear mufflers, you can achieve an output in the 340-360bhp range. There is much more to be said about this vehicle. [contact info removed]

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2012 MDX Tech CPO with 30k miles! It's great to hear that you're happy with your choice. You did your research and it sounds like you made the right decision. The MDX is a fantastic car with impressive driving capabilities, quality build, and standard features. The SH-AWD is especially noteworthy for its on-the-road traction and performance, making driving in heavy downpours a breeze. It's also great to hear that the MDX has decent ground clearance for logging roads and unimproved two-tracks. The engine's low placement in the bonnet is a testament to Acura's engineering prowess and must be how they lowered the car's center of gravity. It's also impressive that you were able to strike a better deal with Acura compared to the German cars. Three years later, with 52K miles, it's great to hear that you haven't had any issues or problems with the MDX. It's been a reliable people and cargo mover for you, even on long trips. While you've noticed a decrease in MPG for both local and highway driving, it's not entirely clear why this is happening. Overall, it's great to hear that you're still enjoying your MDX and that it's been a reliable car for you.

I purchased my 2013 MDX in April of 2016 as a Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle. I researched the vehicle for about 5 months before finally making a purchase. I wanted to make sure I was buying a reliable vehicle since the car I traded in for the Acura was less than reliable. While I am overall very satisfied with my purchase, the MDX did fall short in a few areas for the 2013 year. There is no push button ignition, the backup camera is very blurry and useless at night, and the vehicle likes to shift out of first gear very quickly which can be aggravating, instantly losing that power (shifts at about 2200 RPM, would be smoother shifting around the 3000 RPM point). I also don't like the lever release for the parking brake, but it's no big deal. With those 4 complaints though, the MDX makes up for it in other areas. For starters, it runs great. There is no shortage of power and the engine has an amazing sound running through the RPMs. The vehicle also handles like a dream. You can take it on a mountain road and not feel like it's going to tip over or that you need to crawl up the mountain. Of course, the appearance is what first caught my attention to consider the MDX. I have received nothing but compliments from coworkers and friends over the way the vehicle looks. It has a very aggressive front and rear end. The stereo is also amazing. While I could stand it to be a little louder at times, most people are not going to have an issue at all. I also get decent gas mileage. I average around 20 MPG. Given the size and horsepower, I don't consider that bad at all. Although requiring premium gas does make that number a little irrelevant, spending at least 50 cents more per gallon at the pump than a rival running on regular.Since I purchased the car, I have experienced a vibration issue that comes and goes. Although changing two of the tires initially resolved the issue, it resurfaced a few weeks later. However, running the car to 5500 RPM completely eliminated the vibration. Currently, only a slight vibration shows up on rare occasions and goes away shortly after. Additionally, I have noticed complaints about bearings going bad fairly quickly on the MDX. I have an appointment soon to check a slight roaring noise that I believe may be one of the bearings. Despite these issues, I would still recommend the vehicle to anyone.

We purchased this car as a certified used vehicle from a dealer when it was only 9 months old and had very low mileage. Here are some of the things we've noticed: On the plus side, it's very comfortable, especially for my taller husband. Most of the switches are within easy reach, and manipulating the back seats is a breeze. There's also plenty of cargo room, and the engine is peppy for a larger SUV. It grips the road very well. On the downside, the cab is very noisy, with lots of road and wind noise. There's also a burnt smell that occasionally comes from the circulation vents, and despite mechanics' attempts to fix it over the almost 6 years we've owned the car, they haven't been able to source the issue. The controls on the steering wheel aren't very intuitive, and the climate control is difficult to use and not very efficient. Of the two USB ports, one stopped working after a year (it's the one in the front of the console). The biggest and most dangerous issue we've had was with the electronics. Warning lights would come on, often several at once, the radio lights would come on, and the engine would speed up and not be under normal control. This started happening after a year of ownership, while the car was still under warranty. It progressed to multiple attempts to start (with all the warning lights on and acting like a dead battery). We tried getting jumps to start it, and even bought a new battery, but the car was still difficult to start. It became dangerous to drive, so we had it towed to the dealer. The dealer attempted a repair that was not successful, and the car died again when we were out of town. The dealer tried to fix it again and was unsuccessful - they couldn't find the issue. Finally, a relative who was a mechanic told us about a Honda recall on electrical issues and steering column electronics. We had the dealer fix the Honda issue, and this fixed the problem. If you're interested, you can look up related Honda issues for Acura problems.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2012 MDX, which I bought to replace my 2007 MDX. Unfortunately, I discovered that it burns oil at a rate of a quart every 1100 miles. At first, I thought the previous owner had not taken good care of the engine, but it turns out that Acura has a known issue with the J37A engine in the 2008-2014 MDX models. It seems that a new cylinder material is causing the piston rings to wear out quickly, resulting in oil consumption. Acura has stated that burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles is normal, which is disappointing. Some consumers have reported that Acura only offers compensation if they sign an NDA. There is also a rumor that the rings were installed improperly at the factory. According to initial statistics, over 11% of Acura MDX's with the J37A engine have this problem. I strongly advise against buying one unless Acura offers a warranty guarantee. The issue has been reported in cars with as few as 40,000 miles, usually after the warranty has expired. Please be cautious!

We had the oil consumption test done at our local Acura dealer. Unfortunately, it was determined that losing 1 quart of oil in 1000 miles is within industry standards. While we were disappointed, we decided to sell the car to Carmax at a loss rather than selling a broken car to a friend or another person. Carmax knew what they were getting. Overall, we would recommend being cautious when considering this automobile.

I had a fantastic 2012 XC60 T6 R type that was a marvel of precision and style. Unfortunately, it was also incredibly uncomfortable with rock-hard seats and suspension. As a mom with a bad hip and back who loves to drive fast, I just couldn't handle it. So, I opted for a gently used MDX. My husband has a TL that is still running great at 70K, so now we're a two Acura family. While it's true that the build quality may not match some of the European standards, it's perfect for a suburban mommy mobile that might see light off-road duty on easy dirt roads during scout campout weekends.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2012 MDX. About a year ago (Jan '18), I received a low oil level message for the first time. I had to add 2.5 qts to get the dipstick back up to the standard level. Since then, I've noticed that it takes 2.5-3.0 qts of added oil between 5,000 mile oil changes!! My MDX now has 96,000 miles on it, but I haven't discussed this issue with the Acura dealer yet. I also wanted to mention that in addition to my MDX, I purchased a new Lexus es 350 in 2008 which now has 200,000 miles... and I have never had to add a drop of oil!!

Just hit 90k! Since 50k, I've noticed some rough acceleration and turning. It sputters when accelerating up to 50 mph, but then it runs great. When turning, it slips a bit while accelerating. I've heard different opinions on what the issue could be - some say it's the transmission, some say it's the all-wheel drive, and some say it's the fuel injectors. However, I think it might be time to sell!
