2005 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.
The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.
The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common 2005 Dodge Dakota problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Dodge Dakota 2005, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Worn Upper Ball Joints:
- The upper ball joints on the 2005 Dodge Dakota are known to wear out, affecting the truck's alignment and causing tire feathering or chopping.
- Signs of wear can be detected by checking for excessive movement in the tire when wiggled from the 12 and 6 o'clock positions.
- Damaged ball joints may require the replacement of the control arm and ball joint assembly.
- Clunking Noise from the Front:
- Owners have reported a clunking noise when driving over bumps, indicating potential issues with the steering shaft components.
- The steering shaft has two u-joints and a vibration dampener that, if faulty, can lead to creaking or clunking noises.
- Repairing this problem may involve replacing the entire steering shaft assembly and necessitate a realignment of the vehicle.
- Camshaft Position Sensor Failure:
- Symptoms of a bad camshaft position sensor include engine stalling after starting attempts and the engine cranking but failing to start.
- To address this issue, the camshaft position sensor needs to be replaced to ensure proper engine functionality.
- Problems with the Exhaust Manifold:
- Some owners have reported odd noises from the exhaust manifold during start-up, particularly in colder months.
- These noises may be accompanied by an illuminated check engine light and engine stall, indicating potential issues with corroded or broken exhaust manifold bolts.
- Transfer Case Shift Motor Issues:
- Owners have experienced difficulties shifting from 2WD to 4WD or the truck shifting unprompted, signaling problems with the transfer case shift motor.
- Testing the switch inside the passenger compartment and checking for wiring damage can help diagnose and address issues with the transfer case shift motor.
These common problems with the Dodge Dakota 2005 can impact the vehicle's performance and safety, highlighting the importance of timely maintenance and repairs to ensure a reliable driving experience.

Why did they stop making Dodge Dakota?
The Dodge Dakota actually existed for two years after the transition as the Ram Dakota before being finally axed without a replacement in 2011 due to dwindling sales, lack of development of anything resembling a replacement (the closest we maybe got was the 2006 Rampage concept truck), and a toughening business case.

- Summary: *Incomplete Recall Status* ***Defect in transfer case*** Complaint of Manufacturer Defect in 2005 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 3.7l v6. While driving at a speed of 30mph on a smooth paved highway and selector switch turned to 2 wheel drive mode; out of nowhere, the transfer case tried to engage 4 High which resulted in SVC 4X4 warning lamp illumination and a loud grinding/stuttering sound from under carriage as well as halting me to 10 mph without any help from me. after pulling over on the roadside and putting truck in park and turning the engine off, i waited a couple of minutes and SVC 4X4 indicator and 4High dash light had gone. I restarted the truck only to find that the SVC 4X4 Warning lamp immediately returned and now the 4lo illuminated dash light is constantly showing and truck is still showing in 2 wheel drive with selector switch but 4x4 will not engage at all now. Took to a mechanic shop 1/2 mile down the road and had it read for any DTCs and inspected. Code came back as C1404. Transfer case still tries to engage as soon as truck door is opened and dome light comes on. SVC 4X4 warning indicator stays on the dash lit up and 4lo warning light flashes non stop. Manufacturers communication letter has been sent to dealerships for the proper installation steps of the transfer case on the model of my truck due to improper positioning. I have noticed no Recall but have found a Campaign ID listed for this issue. I've owned this truck for only DAYS now with the intention of presenting it to daughter for her 16th birthday next month and now there's a BIG concern here for safety and the fact that a recall hasn't been issued is crazy! ....it's completely absurd and should be escalated immediately until a consumer resolution is made. This truck is NOT safe at all with this defect by manufacturer transfer case! I am demanding that this faulty part be investigated and taken considerable responsibility for just for the amount of time allowed to pass!!

I have owned this vehicle for almost 2 years and I am very pleased with my choice. It has been reliable and drives really well for a pickup truck. Although the gas mileage is not very good, I realize that pickup trucks are not the most economical vehicles on the road anyway. I also appreciate the interior room and the Quad cab is a big bonus. Overall, I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone interested in a mid-size pickup.

Just bought my '05 4wd Dakota 4 months ago and I absolutely love it! It handles both on and off-road like a dream. I was worried it might be too low, but it crawls over everything like it's pavement! The reliability is truly impressive and I feel confident taking this truck anywhere I can think of. The 4lock works great and I'm very impressed. This is my first 4wd and I have to say, it's the best overall mid-size truck on the market. It's roomy, comfortable, and even the ext. part is spacious.

This is a fantastic truck! It's just the right size and power level, and the interior is well thought out. It's welcoming without detracting from the truck's ruggedness. The 2005 model has a better warranty and is almost identical mechanically and visually. I've only had this truck for about 2 1/2 months and 1600 miles, and aside from a catalytic converter problem that was promptly addressed, it's been a strong runner. I was originally looking for a full-size truck, but the gas mileage on those is terrible. For all practical purposes, this truck can tow and haul the same as them (unless you have a massive boat or something, in which case you would probably get a diesel). Plus, it's not underpowered like other midsize trucks!

I'm glad I chose this truck for my light hauling and travel needs, even though I sometimes wish I had gone for the V8. The take off can be a bit slow, but overall the ride is smooth and I've really enjoyed owning it.

If you take good care of it, it will last a long time. The transmission had to be rebuilt at 180k miles, but other than that, it ran great. I made sure to keep the oil changed.

Although it looks great, the car has several drawbacks such as being uncomfortable, having many blind spots, terrible gas mileage, and a sluggish transmission. As an owner, I regretted my purchase and questioned the engineers' thought process.

I spent 2 months searching for a replacement vehicle, test driving a variety of cars, trucks, and vans. Ultimately, I chose the Dakota due to its size and affordability. I was able to purchase it brand new for just over 15K, which was a significant discount from the sticker price. In comparison to other vehicles, including compacts, the Dakota was the most cost-effective option. Additionally, the truck has a sturdy and secure feel. While the gas mileage is 16 mpg, I still find it to be a worthwhile investment at 15 cents per mile, especially when compared to the cramped interior of a Kia.

After driving 36,000 miles, unfortunately, the transmission went out. The dealer was able to fix it, but it went out again. The dealer fixed it once more, but it went out again. Finally, the dealer replaced the transmission. However, six months later, the transmission hose started leaking and the EGR went out, causing the engine light to come on. Additionally, the front suspension bushings are worn out, causing some squeaking on the way home. Lastly, the driver's side window stopped working. It's been a frustrating experience, but we'll do our best to get everything fixed and back to normal.

I have the 4.7 HO motor auto trans and tow package. This truck performed exceptionally well for the first four months after purchase. However, after reaching 50k miles, I encountered several issues such as bad catalytic converters and a broken fuel pump, resulting in a fuel economy of 10 miles per gallon. Despite these setbacks, I remain confident in the quality of domestic vehicles and will continue to support them in the future.

I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your truck! It's been over a year since you've had it, and it seems like it's been a reliable vehicle for you. While you've had to replace the tie-rod ends a couple of times, it's good to know that this is a common issue with Dakotas. The gas mileage may not be the best, but it's great to hear that the power is good and that it pulls your boat with ease. The cab is roomy and can even fit adults in the backseat, which is always a plus. While the off-road performance is adequate, it's important to note that it may not be able to handle tough terrain and ground clearance could be a concern. Overall, it sounds like you made a great choice and would buy it again!
