Alfa romeo Giulia 2017 problems
Alfa Romeo Giulia (Italian pronunciation: ) is the name of three not directly related models by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo. The first is a line of sporty four-door compact executive cars (Type 105) produced from 1962 to 1978, the second is an updated, mainly up-engined Spider, Sprint and Sprint Speciale Giuliettas, and the third Giulia is a compact executive car (type 952) unveiled in 2015.
Alfa Romeo was one of the first mainstream manufacturers to put a powerful engine in a light-weight 1 tonne (2,205 lb) four-door car for mass production. The Type 105 Giulia was equipped with a light alloy twin overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine similar to that of the earlier Giulietta (750/101) range, available in 1.3-litre (1,290 cc) and 1.6-litre (1,570 cc) versions. Various configurations of carburetors and tuning produced power outputs from about 80 to about 110 bhp (55 to 75 kW), coupled in most cases to 5-speed manual transmission.
Giulia sedans were noted for lively handling and impressive acceleration among small European four-door sedans of their era, especially considering modest engine sizes offered. The popular Super version with the twin carburettor 1.6 litre engine had a top speed of 170 km/h (106 mph) and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in about 12 seconds, better than many sports cars of the late 1960s and early 1970s. When leaving the factory all variations of the Giulia originally fitted either Pirelli Cinturato 165HR14 or 155HR15 tyres (CA67).
The styling of the boxy four-door notchback saloon was somewhat wanting. The engine bay, cabin and boot were all square shaped, buffered somewhat by details on the grill, roofline, bonnet and boot. Use of a wind tunnel during development led to a very aerodynamic shape that produced a drag coefficient of Cd=0.34, particularly low for a saloon of the era.
The Giulia Spider was succeeded by the Alfa Romeo Spider (105/115) in 1966.

Common Alfa romeo Giulia 2017 problems
The Alfa Romeo Giulia, a luxury sedan introduced in 2016, has garnered attention for its design and performance. However, it has also been marked by a reputation for poor reliability, particularly in its early years of production. Here are five common problems with the Alfa Romeo Giulia, based on complaints from owners:
- Electrical System Issues: The Alfa Romeo Giulia has been plagued by a series of electrical system faults, including the car shutting off without warning and not restarting, multiple warning lights coming on simultaneously, battery draining, failures of the stop-start system, and issues with corroded or leaking batteries.
- Engine Misfires: Alfa Romeo Giulia models from 2017 and 2018 were recalled due to an engine misfiring problem, which affected the 2.0-liter turbocharged models. This issue could lead to more significant failures if left unchecked, such as catalytic converter overheating, engine wiring damage, and engine fires.
- Brake Failures: The Alfa Romeo Giulia has experienced two common brake faults. The first involves a failure of the anti-lock braking system (ABS), which can reduce braking power and cause a loss of anti-lock braking during hard braking. The second brake issue involves rear brake discs prone to breaking apart, causing a sudden and complete loss of braking power.
- Fuel Leaks: Certain 2020 and 2021 Alfa Romeo Giulia models have experienced fuel leaks due to a crack in the fuel line sensor housing. This can increase the risk of fire, as fuel can leak from the fuel lines.
- Other Common Issues: Contaminated and leaking brake fluid, inability to disable adaptive cruise control due to faulty brake module software, and higher fuel gauge readings leading to stranded owners are other common problems reported by Alfa Romeo Giulia owners.
These issues, along with the car's poor reliability scores, have earned the Alfa Romeo Giulia a reputation for unreliability, making it a tough commitment for those considering it as their only car.
Are Alfa Romeo Giulias reliable?
These are top contenders from Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo hasn't done well with reliability in recent years, but it still has some winners. The Giulia is an excellent choice, but so are the Giulietta, Stelvio, and Tonale.
What is the recall on the 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia?
Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2017-2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia and 2018-2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles equipped with carbon ceramic matrix brakes. During certain driving maneuvers, the brake system may exert an excessive clamp force that may fracture the rotor, decreasing the brake performance.
How many miles does a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia last?
What Is High Mileage For the Alfa Romeo Giulia? We've mentioned that an Alfa Romeo Giulia will survive around 200,000 miles with proper care. Thus, high mileage for the vehicle is anything around and over 150,000 miles.
Is Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0 petrol reliable?
Alfa Romeo's reliability record is best described as 'eventful' but the Giulia – and its engines – are proving dependable. While the Giulia has been subject to seven recalls, they've all affected a comparatively small number of cars. Still, check carefully if buying used that any recall action has been undertaken.

POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
- VIN: ZAREAECN2H7
- Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On September 1st 2024 we were faced with a serious problem with our Alfa Romeo Giulia 2.0T leaving us stranded. The culprate was a defect in the fuel pump on which led to the complete stop of the car during our trip abroad. After driving 900 kilometers without problems, various error messages suddenly appeared on the dashboard, including “Have engine checked”, “Start/stop function not available” and “Service throttle control”. A few seconds later, the engine stopped responding to the accelerator pedal and misfires appeared, which caused the engine to come to a complete stop and the power steering noticeably deced. Fortunately, we were just able to get to safety, but the car could not be started from that moment on. This incident occurred while we were far from home and caused significant inconvenience and stress. The diagnosis of our authorized Alfa Romeo dealer was: defective fuel pump and fuel pump module, with replacement costs of €1,294. What is striking is that at the same time another Giulia, with the same year of construction, was at the same dealer with exactly the same problem. In our case, because we were driving on a fairly empty road, we did not incur any injuries or damage to our vehicle or fellow road users, but of course this could have been very different in a busy traffic situation. We think this is a serious safety issue.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-30
- VIN: ZARFAEEN3H7
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving my Alfa Romeo Giulia on [Insert Date], the vehicle's sunroof unexpectedly shattered without any prior warning or identifiable external impact, posing a sudden and severe safety risk. The shattering glass resulted in minor cuts and significant distress while I was operating the vehicle, thereby jeopardizing my safety as well as potentially that of other road users. Upon the occurrence of the incident, there were no prior symptoms, warning lamps, or messages indicating a potential problem with the sunroof. This issue had not been previously identified during routine maintenance checks, nor had there been any modifications or repairs done to the sunroof since the purchase of the vehicle. The vehicle has since been inspected by a service center where I initially received incorrect information about my warranty coverage, leading to further complications and delays in addressing the issue adequately. No third-party modifications have been made to the vehicle, and all services have been conducted according to manufacturer recommendations. This incident appears to be due to a failure or malfunction of the vehicle's sunroof system, which should be robust enough to withstand normal driving conditions without such occurrences. I am concerned that this could be indicative of a larger issue that may affect other vehicles of the same model.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-19
- VIN: ZARFAEAV0H7
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My wife was driving the alfa on a tree lined winding country road when the car died without warning. The road has no hard shoulder so it was shuck on the road. My wife had to get out of the car and wave at to warn other traffic that the car was stuck on the road just around the bend. this went on for about an hour until the tow truck arrived, she was very stressed out as there was some close calls with traffic braking at the last second. The cause of the problem was the fuel pump failing, code P008. I am trying to source a replacement pump and during my research discovered this failure is common with 2017 and 2018 Alfa Giulia models. I am quite upset that they have not made this a recall, because the risk of being in an accident due to a car suddenly losing power is quite possible.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
- VIN: ZARFAEEN7H7
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Was driving my 2017 Giulia on a busy interstate, and everything was perfectly fine until 3 error messages popped up: service engine, service electronic throttle control, start/stop unavailable. Then the engine cuts off and the car shifted into N gear. It was a very horrifying experience as the semi-truck behind me almost crashed into me since my car lost power. I tried to restart the car but with no success, the engine will sputter for 3-5 seconds and gave up. Plugged in the OBD scanner and received a "P008A low fuel pressure" reading (I had almost a full tank of gas). So it is a fuel pump related issue. Apperantly this is a very popular issue/defect, and Alfa Romeo is well aware of it as they even published a service bulletin for this specific error. Please see the attached PDF file for the service bulletin. Basically, the fuel pump module should be replaced. I am taking my car to an Alfa Romeo dealership for further investigation. I believed that Alfa Romeo should recall and inspect the conditions of the fuel pumps because it is very dangerous when your engine cut off while driving on a busy interstate. I also have another passenger with me while the incident happens and some other video and photo evidence. I can provide more evidence when my dealer finishes inspecting the car.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-10
- VIN: ZARFAEEN5H7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: On July 10 I was driving my car and then suddenly all the brakes came on. There were no objects in front of the car or behind the cars it was early morning at 7 o'clock on my way to the hospital for work. There was no warning that there was an object in front of me or anything. Two days later around the same time in the morning the car could start but the electronic brake system was ON. you can't turn them off. it gave a temporary message about electronic brake system issue. you can start the car and turn it off but the car won't move the even when you put the gear on as if all electronic brake system are engaged and can't turn them off by pushing the electronic parking knob off. after turning the car on and off multiple times, this electronic brakes must have been disengaged. Three days later the car was diagnosed with brake caliper failure in one tire which was repaired. I'm a physician and by no means a car technician but I think these are two completely unrelated issues. I feel that a bad brake caliper in one tire should not cause all four tires and all four brakes to stop the car suddenly on the road or prevent the car from moving when Idol or lock the electronic brake system. I communicated this clearly with Alfa Romeo main office as well as with my local dealership. This has been almost 2-3 weeks ago since ofI communicated with the Alfa Romeo people. I clearly told him that this is a big safety issue and we can't allow cars to stop by themselves in the middle of the road or come to a sudden brake in the middle of the road. This is extremely hazardous to the driver as well as to the people in that car or around the car. the technician thinks that the car is drivable and safe. Again I work on people not cars, but to me sudden irrational activation of the electronic braking system may not be dangerous when the car is idol but is extremely DANGEROUS while driving. Because i didn't hear any listening ears at the Alfa, I decided to contact you.

- VIN: ZARFAEEN3H7
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: When driving vehicle it randomly goes into Limp mode and gives an “electronic throttle module error”. This in turns decreases the power of the vehicle significantly and causes you to move over lanes as to not cause traffic. This issue is common for a lot of Alfa Romeo Guilia owners.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-12
- VIN: ZARFAEEN5H7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine recently began making a loud ticking sound, that everyone who heard it asked, "What's wrong with your car?" I purchased the vehicle new 5.5 years ago and it presently has 38,475 miles on it. The dealer determined the noise was due to a loose oil pump bolt under the timing cover. It was a 10.5 hour repair to remove a bolt and reapply lock-tite to it and then reinstall. Had the repair not been performed the bolt could have vibrated all the way out and caused internal damage to the engine, which I believe is a safety issue. The repair cost was $1,813.68. Per the dealer this was the first Giulia model that they had to service for this issue, but they had serviced several Stelvio models that were newer but shared the same engine. In today's automotive market such repairs should not be necessary on a vehicle with low mileage. The brand offers a 4 year / 50,000 mile warranty, but not a separate powertrain warranty. In hindsight, it appears the brand does not have a great deal of confidence in the durability of the powertrains it builds.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-18
- VIN: ZARFAEEN5H7
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On August 18, 2022, I was driving the vehicle at a speed of approximately 45 mph when the vehicle motor suddenly and without any prior warning completely shut down. Several warning lights appeared immediately but none prior to the shutdown. I was driving in moderately heavy traffic and had to coast to a spot off the shoulder of the road. This was a dangerous situation and if I had been in heavier higher speed traffic, this would have been a very risky safety situation since I had no power whatsoever to control the vehicle movement. The vehicle would not restart and had to be towed to a repair shop. The problem was with the Fuel Pump Control Module which had to be replaced along with replacing the fuel pump. The manufacturer had previously issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) concerning this but had not issued a recall. I was unaware of the TSB. The manufacturer was obviously aware of issues with the Fuel Pump Control Module but did not issue a recall for vehicles. The TSB was for cars produced prior to August of 2017 and my car was produced in May of 2017.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-16
- VIN: Zarfaebn7h7
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My vehicle parking brake came on suddenly and will not go off. I have seen thousands of complaints online about corrosion to the wiring in the electronic brake system and am wondering why a recall has not been issued as this is a serious safety concern. My vehicle is now inoperable because I cannot get the parking brake off and am afraid that it will happen again while driving.

After five years, I still love how this car looks and handles. It has been incredibly reliable with only regular service needed. I must say, Alfa USA was extremely supportive during the pandemic, which I really appreciated. To ensure my good fortune continues, I purchased an extended five-year warranty through the dealer. If I had more miles, I would definitely purchase another Giulia.

Hey guys, I wanted to share my experience with BMW M3s. Over the past 20+ years, I've owned 7 of them - 95, 98, 01, 02, 04, 05, and 08. I've also driven a few 2015 models. However, I recently had the chance to drive the Alfa Romeo and I must say, it's a game-changer! The power and performance are incredible, and it's like driving a V8 E92 M3 with all the upgrades you could wish for. The Alfa Romeo is definitely worth considering if you're in the market for a new car. Thanks for listening!

This car is incredibly fun to drive, especially if you enjoy driving fast. It also has great traction on dry roads. However, there have been some software-driven problems that need to be addressed.

People keep asking my wife if it's a $100,000 car. It's actually a great value for a little sporty car, and she absolutely loves it!

This is actually my third Alfa! I previously owned a 72 Spider and a 74 GTV 2000. I must say, this car has kept the experience going in every way possible. It's incredibly nimble in the corners, fast when you want it to be, and has a precise and light steering feel. I've received tons of comments from people and long stares from car enthusiasts! I consider myself lucky that all the electronics are working well and I've only had to take it in for a software upgrade and oil change. I'm definitely going to buy it. I'm glad I got the sports seats - they're the only way to go. Although this one was on the lot, I should have gotten the 19-inch wheels, LSD, and adaptive suspension. However, the service manager said that the 18-inch wheel is good for everyday driving to ward off pinch flats compared to the 19-inch. The RFT Bridgestones aren't my favorite, but they're about shot and I'm planning to switch to P7's. The wheel upgrade to 19 inches is tempting, and I can then have a winter and summer set of wheels/tires. Don't believe the Alfa bashers, but at the same time, there appear to be some that are plagued by electronic gremlins early in life.

Models with a sunroof have excessive wind noise. Alfa Romeo says that's the design. However, I personally don't think it's acceptable for a car of this price. Additionally, acceleration can be sluggish at low speeds and Bluetooth isn't compatible with iPhone. All in all, I would hold off on purchasing until these issues are sorted out.

I purchased a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia in May 2017. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the vehicle, including dashboard warnings and the car unexpectedly moving to Neutral while in Drive. This has happened multiple times, including once on the highway at 70+MPH and multiple times while making left or right turns. While this has been a frustrating experience, I must say that the dealership has been very helpful and courteous throughout the process. They have kept us informed and have done their best to resolve the issue. However, we have been disappointed with the response from Alfa Romeo Corporate. They have moved our case to a Third Party Dispute Resolution Center, who offered us a very small amount of compensation for the inconvenience and risk to our safety. We believe that a premium brand like Alfa Romeo should take these issues more seriously and offer a more appropriate solution, such as replacing the vehicle with a new, tested one. Unfortunately, this has not been the case, and we are left feeling regretful about our purchase. Despite this, we remain positive and hopeful for a resolution to this situation.

The 2017 Gulia has been experiencing some issues, but Alfa is not taking responsibility for them. The car has spent more time at the dealer than in my driveway.

The car is undeniably stunning and impressive, but unfortunately, it has required two services in the first week of ownership. This experience has left me with regret for my decision to purchase it, and I now wish I had kept my Jaguar instead. The repeated issues with the car have led me to consider the possibility of invoking the lemon law.

We purchased our Giulia at the end of 2017 and have enjoyed driving it. However, during our first long drive from MO to FL, we experienced some electrical system issues. Unfortunately, two weeks ago, we also experienced brake failure. Despite these issues, we have not received the level of customer service we expected for such an expensive new car. We are now hesitant to drive the car again. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
