2004 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.
The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.
The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common 2004 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota 2004 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and brake system.
Engine Problems:
- Fluctuating idle: A fluctuating idle, where the engine speed increases and decreases on its own, can be caused by a variety of issues, including vacuum leaks, faulty sensors, or ignition problems. This can lead to poor performance, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased emissions.
Brake Issues:
- Brake cylinder lockup: This issue is caused by a failure in the brake system, where the brake cylinder locks up, preventing the vehicle from moving. This can be caused by a variety of issues, including worn-out brake pads, damaged rotors, or a faulty brake master cylinder.
These issues can be costly and time-consuming to repair, and can potentially lead to more serious problems if left unaddressed. It is recommended that owners of the 2004 Dodge Dakota stay vigilant and address any engine or brake issues promptly to avoid further damage and ensure the safety of the vehicle.

NOW MY LIGHTS WORK AND I HAVE A "GUARANTEE" FROM THE EBAY SELLER THAT IT WILL WORK FOR 6 MONTHS. I HAVE A SERIOUSLY DANGEROUS VEHICLE AND I CAN NOT TRUST MY HEADLIGHTS WILL NOT GO OUT AT ANY TIME SO I CAN NOT DRIVE IT AT NIGHT IN GOOD CONFIDENCE OR MORAL CONSCIENCE. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-02-07
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I BOUGHT MY DODGE DAKOTA BRAND NEW FROM A DEALER. I STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH IT ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASE. I'LL BRIEFLY LIST THESE FAILURES. WHILE DRIVING IN VERY COLD WEATHER (WINTER). I WAS DRIVING WITH THE HEATER ON, A LARGE VOLUME OF ENGINE COOLANT CAME POURING OUT OF THE DASHBOARD HEATER VENTS. THIS WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALER. WITHIN THAT SAME YEAR THE FUEL GAUGE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON WHENEVER THE GAS TANK BECAME HALF EMPTY. AT THIS POINT THE FUEL GAUGE WOULD DROP TO ZERO FUEL, CORRECTS WHEN GAS CAP IS TIGHTENED OR FUEL IS ADDED. PLASTIC PIECE BROKE OFF IN TRANSMISSION AT ~ 52,000 MILES, I HAD IT REPLACED AND NOW HAVE A CRACK IN EXHAUST MANIFOLD WHICH CAUSED THERMOSTAT FAILURE, WATER PUMP FAILURE AND LEAKING OF ALL OF THE ENGINE COOLANT. UNABLE TO WELD THE MANIFOLD AND MECHANIC HAD TO INSTALL HEAT SHIELD TO PREVENT ALL OF THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. NOW WHEN I START THE VEHICLE IS SOUNDS LIKE IT MIGHT EXPLODE! THIS HORRENDOUS NOISE SOFTENS AFTER A FEW MINUTES. I DON'T RUN THE HEATER ANYMORE AS I SMELL A VERY STRONG ODOR OF EXHAUST FUMES WHEN HEATER FAN IS ON. VEHICLE OCCASIONALLY SHUTS OFF WHEN IDLING AT ~500RPM.

CONSENSUS IS THE STEERING RACK AND/OR THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. WENT AND HAD STEERING RACK AND LOWER SHAFT REPLACED AND IT CURED THE PROBLEM ABOUT 97 PERCENT. DODGE SHOULD HAVE A RECALL FOR SAFETY REASONS AS THIS COULD INVOLVE FATALITIES . *TR

- Summary: GOT IN VEHICLE AND STARTED TO DRIVE WHEN I NOTICED MAKING A TURN THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT RETURN TO CENTER. THE STEERING WAS REAL HEAVY LIKE THE POWER STEERING WAS FAILING. CHECKED POWER STEERING FLUID-IT WAS OKAY,TIRE PRESSURE WAS OK. AS I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE STEERING GOT BETTER. SINCE THAT INCIDENT THE PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING COMES AND GOES. I WENT ON THE WEB AND FOUND OUT HOW MANY MORE 2004 DODGE DAKOTA TRUCK OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE STEERING PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE IN THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AND/OR THE STEERING RACK. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS SAFETY PROBLEM OR A CLASS ACTION. ALSO THE 2004 DAKOTA BALL JOINTS WENT OUT AT 60000 MILES AT MY EXPENSE. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR 2003 DAKOTA BALL JOINTS BEING BAD BUT NOT 2004. I HAD BOUGHT A 1993 DAKOTA BRAND NEW AND BOUGHT THE 2004 DAKOTA BRAND NEW BUT I MIGHT HAVE TO RECONSIDER GOING TO ANOTHER MAKE IF THE STEERING DOES NOT GET REMEDIED BY DODGE. *TR

This truck has an impressive street presence and a size that can easily be mistaken for a full-size truck. When parked next to a Chevy full-size regular cab, it can even make it look smaller. As you sit in the driver's bucket seat and turn the key, the 4.7 V-Eight engine starts to rumble, and it sounds amazing. When you put it in gear, it feels like a powerful dog pulling you faster than you want to go. With 230 horses under the hood, it's no wonder why. Forget Toyota... this is the real deal. What a feeling!

Your Dodge Dakota sounds like a great vehicle to own! The ride and handling are excellent, and it's impressive that you've put on over 10000 miles in just 7 months. While the fuel consumption may not be the best, it's understandable given that it's a 4WD, 4.7L V8. I can imagine that driving 19 miles to work in heavy traffic in Chesapeake, VA can be challenging, but it's great that you're still getting an average of 17 miles to the gallon. Overall, it sounds like you're enjoying your Dodge Dakota and I hope it continues to serve you well!

Hi there! I recently sold my F250 Crew Diesel because it was just too big for my needs. After looking around for a while, I considered the Colorado and Dakota, but the 5 cylinder and small size of the Chevy put me off. Ultimately, I decided on the 4.7 with the 5 speed Auto, 4x4 Crew and it's been a great choice! It's a welcome change from the big Ford and has a solid feel, great engine, big cab and bed. It's also fun to drive, easy to park, and good on the highway. If you drive easy, gas mileage is good too. Wishing you the best of luck on your search!

High off the ground with bulging tires, powerful V-6, smooth riding, great handling - it feels like a 25K$-30K$ truck. And the best part? I only paid 20,300$ (including tax tags and title) and I was out the door with this truck. You couldn't beat that with a bat! I'm so happy.

Great handling, good price, and a classy look!

At 53,000 miles, the power steering has failed. I have been informed that the cost of repair could range from $450.00 to $1500, in the event that both the power steering pump and rack are damaged. Given the numerous issues reported online and the low mileage of my vehicle, I believe that the manufacturer should take responsibility for addressing this problem.

The vehicle has a rattling sound emanating from under the dashboard, which the dealer has been unable to locate. Additionally, the front brakes persistently squeal despite the dealer's attempts to rectify the issue. These concerns are indicative of subpar fit and finish, which is unacceptable for a vehicle of this caliber.

The quality seems to be good. I would recommend getting a limited slip rear end, especially if you plan on driving in the snow with sand bags in the back. If you have the option, go for the wheel package without the Goodyear Eagles as they tend to be too noisy. The V8 engine is very strong and while the gas mileage isn't the best, it will pull a load well. The seats are also very comfortable, especially the front buckets. I test drove the V6 and it had plenty of power, but I ultimately chose this one because of the stronger motor and load capacity. Overall, I have owned Rangers and S10's, but this is by far the best compact truck made by the big 3 automakers.

Overall, I had an idea of what to expect from the vehicle. However, I noticed that when traveling over bumps or potholes, the vehicle tends to jump off the front tires, which can feel quite dangerous. Additionally, the passenger seat does not recline to a comfortable position on long trips, which can be quite uncomfortable. I did experience some squeaking from the brakes at around 16,000 miles, but I have not had them checked yet. I am hoping that the dust will work itself out without having to go to the dealer. By the way, I purchased an oil change coupon book from the dealer, but I have noticed that they always want to do unnecessary work, so it's important to be aware of that. Other than oil changes, I have not done any other maintenance.

After owning the truck for just a week, I noticed that the automatic was shifting in a strange way. Specifically, when I was driving at around 40-50 mph, there was a 'missing' feeling after shifting into the higher gear. Even when I put the pedal to the floor, there was no increase in power. I took it back to the dealer, and unfortunately, it was in the shop for nearly two weeks. The results showed that Dodge had a computer problem, and they had no idea when it could be fixed. Interestingly, the dealer admitted that several other V-6s on the lot had the same problem. Unfortunately, we received no help from the manufacturer. When we tried to trade it in for a V-8, the dealer tried to make us take a hit of $4,200 negative equity for the truck we had owned for less than 3 weeks (with two weeks in the shop). To make matters worse, they put the defective truck back on the lot and sold it! I hope this information helps you in some way.
