2003 Dodge Dakota problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.

The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.

The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common 2003 Dodge Dakota problems

The 2003 Dodge Dakota is known for several common problems, primarily related to the engine, brakes, and body/paint.

Engine problems are one of the most prominent issues, with the 2000 and 2006 models being particularly affected. Some specific engine problems include:

  1. Loss of oil pressure due to oil sludge: This issue can lead to significant engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  2. Fluctuating idle: This can make the vehicle difficult to control and may indicate a problem with the engine's fuel or air intake systems.
  3. Recurring misfire on the same cylinder: This can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty spark plugs or ignition coils, and can lead to reduced engine performance and fuel efficiency.

Brake issues are another common problem with the Dodge Dakota, particularly in the 2002 model. Some specific brake problems include:

  1. Brake cylinder lockup: This can cause the vehicle to suddenly stop or become difficult to steer, and can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty brake components or a malfunctioning brake system.
  2. Smoking hot brakes: This can be caused by overheated brake pads or rotors, and can lead to reduced brake performance and increased stopping distances.
  3. Brake lockup: This can cause the vehicle to suddenly stop or become difficult to steer, and can be caused by a variety of issues, including faulty brake components or a malfunctioning brake system.

Body/paint troubles are also common in the 2000 model, with customers reporting issues such as paint fading off the top of the roof, oxidation of the clear coat on the roof, and rusting wheel well❶.

It is important to note that these issues are not necessarily indicative of all 2003 Dodge Dakotas, and that many owners have reported few or no problems with their vehicles. However, these common issues should be taken into consideration when purchasing a used Dodge Dakota from this model year.

I PURCHASED A SET OF 4 TIRES (DISCOVERER RTX, 245/70R16) ON NOVEMBER 14, 2018 FOR MY 2003 DODGE DAKOTA. ON DECEMBER 9, 2018, I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE PURCHASING THE COOPER TIRES. I SUDDENLY HEARD A NOISE SIMILAR TO DRIVING ON GROOVED PAYMENT OR RUMBLE-STRIPS. HOWEVER, THE ROADWAY WAS SMOOTH AND CLEAR. I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY AND CHECKED THE TIRES. THE RIGHT-REAR TIRE WAS TORN (SHREDDED) ALL-AROUND BETWEEN THE TIRE SHOULDER AND TREAD, RESULTING IN TWO SEPARATE PIECES. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION, I FOUND A PORTION OF THE SIDE WALL WHERE THE OUTER AND INNER SECTIONS WERE NOT ADHERED (OR NOT GLUED) TOGETHER LIKE THE REST OF THE TIRE. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS TIRE WAS DEFECTIVE AND THAT THE OTHER 3 TIRES MAY ALSO BE AFFECTED. CAN YOU LOOK INTO THIS TO SEE IF THIS TIRE SHOULD BE RECALLED? I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THESE TIRES. THANK YOU

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-11-12
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I RECENTLY BOUGHT A USED 2003 DODGE DAKOTA. THE TRUCK WAS GREAT EXCEPT THAT AT NIGHT WHEN I WOULD TURN ON THE HEADLIGHTS ALL OF THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS WOULD FLASH OFF THEN BACK ON APPROXIMATELY EVERY TWO SECONDS TO 30 SECONDS. AFTER DRIVING FOR ABOUT HALF AN HOUR WITH THIS HAPPENING I BECAME VERY FRUSTRATED. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I NARROWED DOWN MY PROBLEM TO THE DAKOTA CENTRAL TIMING MODULE. IT APPEARS AS IF MANY DODGE CUSTOMERS HAVE THIS EXACT ISSUE WITH THESE DODGE MODEL TRUCKS. IT IS VERY UNSAFE TO OPERATE A VEHICLE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. THIS ISSUE DID NOT DEPEND ON WHETHER I WAS DRIVING IN ROUGH TERRAIN AT NIGHT OR DURING THE DAY. NO MATTER WHERE I DRIVE THE TRUCK, IF THE LIGHTS ARE ON IT WILL BEGIN TO START BLINKING OFF AND THEN ON INTERMITTENTLY. PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM! I HAVE SINCE HAD TO PURCHASE A USED CENTRAL TIMING MODULE OFF OF THE INTERNET BECAUSE WHEN I WENT TO THE DEALER, THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO GET THE PART AND IF THEY WERE IT WOULD COST OVER $500 JUST FOR THE PART. *TR

Negative 2003 Dodge Dakota car reviews

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck. Unfortunately, I had to bring it back to the dealership after only 500 miles due to a lack of power. Even though I was initially told that there was nothing wrong, they ended up having to tear the engine apart and redo the valves, as well as change some items in the transmission. Now, at 20,000 miles, my A/C switch has broken and only works on high, and there's a leak in the truck. It's been a bit frustrating, but I'm hopeful that the dealership will be able to help me out. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my truck that I purchased with the OEM trailergroup and severe service group. While I was hoping it would live up to its towing standards, unfortunately, it hasn't quite met my expectations. On top of that, I've noticed that my fender flares are falling off, which is a bit frustrating. I've only put 8990 miles on it, so it's disappointing to see its value decreasing faster than I can pay it off. I did purchase every option available, but it seems like that doesn't matter when it comes to trading it in. By the way, it's an automatic. Thanks for listening!

I purchased this car in late 2000 and unfortunately experienced some issues with it. The suspension bushings needed correcting and the gas mileage was not great. Additionally, the brake discs failed twice within the first 12,000 miles and the transfer case failed while I was in the woods, which cost $1000 to repair at 49,000 miles. Although the rear end now clunks and there is a noticeable vibration at highway speeds since the repair, the dealer has assured me that it is okay. However, there is still a loud graunch over modest bumps and loud rattles in the suspension over small bumps. I am looking forward to finding a new car soon.

I am extremely dissatisfied with this truck and regret purchasing it.

At this point and with limited miles, I have only one concern. The mileage has not improved since the day I drove it off the lot. It's currently at 12/13 mpg local and 14/15 highway. I do have the 5.9 V-8 in a 4X4, so I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

    Wouldn't buy anything else.

Great to hear that your truck has been performing well after 4,500 miles! Although there were some minor paint imperfections in a few areas, it's good to know that there have been no other issues. It's worth noting that the automatic transmission with a 3.92 drive ratio may be harder on gas compared to a 3.55 ratio. In my humble opinion, it would have been great if the Power Tech 4.7L HO engine was an option. However, the added options are a bit pricey.

Excellent off-road and on! Would buy another in a heartbeat!

I recently purchased a Tacoma after a frustrating experience at the Toyota dealership. I absolutely love the rugged look of the quad and find the interior to be quite comfortable, despite not being as luxurious as some other models. One feature I particularly appreciate are the wide-open rear doors! Although the CD player wasn't functioning when I received the vehicle, it was promptly taken care of under warranty.
