Dodge Dakota problems

The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.

The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.

The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

Common Dodge Dakota problems

The Dodge Dakota, a mid-size pickup truck produced by Dodge from 1987 to 2011, is known for its robustness and versatility. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems. Here are some common issues that Dodge Dakota owners have reported, based on the search results provided:

  • Brake Issues: The 2002 model of the Dodge Dakota has been reported to have significant brake issues. These problems include brake cylinder lockup, smoking hot brakes, and brake lockup. These issues can be dangerous and may require expensive repairs. The 2005 model also has brake issues, although not as prevalent as in the 2002 model.
  • Body/Paint Troubles: The 2000 model of the Dodge Dakota has been reported to have body and paint issues. These problems include paint fading off the top of the roof, oxidation of the clear coat on the roof, and rusting wheel wells. These issues can affect the appearance and value of the vehicle.
  • 4WD System Hiccups: The 4WD system of the Dodge Dakota can experience hiccups, which can lead to problems such as the car staying stuck in 2WD mode. These issues can be addressed with practical solutions, but they require prompt attention to keep the vehicle running smoothly.
  • Intermediate Steering Shaft Noises: Many owners of the 2006 Dodge Dakota have complained about odd noises coming from their vehicle’s intermediate steering shaft. These noises can make the truck steer in increments rather than smoothly, which can affect the driving experience and safety of the vehicle.
  • Damaged Exhaust Manifold Bolts: Owners of the 2006 Dodge Dakota have reported odd noises from the exhaust manifold during start-up, which can be caused by severely corroded or broken exhaust manifold bolts. These issues can be accompanied by an illuminated check engine light and engine stall.
  • Upper Ball Joint Failure: Upper ball joint failure is a common problem in the 2003 Dodge Dakota. This issue can cause clunking noises and jolts from the front driver’s side when turning the vehicle. Faulty or worn ball joints can also make the steering feel clunky, which can affect the overall driving experience and safety of the vehicle.
  • Brake Cylinder Problems: Problems with the brake cylinder are common in the 2002 Dodge Dakota. These issues can cause the front brakes to overheat, lock up randomly, and the vehicle to pull to one side. In some cases, smoke from the front tires can also be observed, which can be caused by overheated and cracked brake pads.

In conclusion, while the Dodge Dakota is a robust and versatile pickup truck, it is not immune to problems. The 2000, 2002, 2005, and 2006 models have been reported to have significant issues, including engine problems, brake issues, body/paint troubles, and 4WD system hiccups. Other model years, such as the 2003 and 2006, have also been reported to have specific issues, such as upper ball joint failure and intermediate steering shaft noises. It is essential to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing a used Dodge Dakota.

Dodge Dakota

Are Dodge Dakota reliable?

The Dodge Dakota enjoys above-average reliability ratings, with some model years scoring better than others. RepairPal gave it a rating of 3.5 out of 5.0, ranking it 19th out of 32 compact pickup trucks in its category.

Do Dodge Dakotas have transmission problems?

One of the biggest Dodge Dakota transmission problems is slipping in-and-out of gear, and/or no gear engagement. Factory design flaws are the most common cause of these problems, and Street Smart Transmission has taken steps to correct all of them.

What are Dodge Dakotas known for?

The Dakota was a mid-sized pickup, larger than compacts like the Ford Ranger, but smaller than a full-sized truck. Four-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines were available in the first two generations, but only the thirsty V8s could be considered strong. The ride is jittery and unsettled.

Why did Dodge discontinue the Dakota?

The Dodge Dakota actually existed for two years after the transition as the Ram Dakota before being finally axed without a replacement in 2011 due to dwindling sales, lack of development of anything resembling a replacement (the closest we maybe got was the 2006 Rampage concept truck), and a toughening business case.

This truck has had extensive computer, power steering, transmission, and parking brake issues since day one. Despite numerous attempts to fix the computer problem, it still persists and I am only getting 13-14mpg all around. As a result, I have lost faith in Chrysler and will not be purchasing any of their products in the future. My family, who also owns Dodge products, shares my disappointment. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I have owned two Dodge Dakota Sports, including this one. The first was a 1995 model. Although I regretted buying another one at first, I have grown to appreciate it. While it has had some issues, such as the A/C dying in year 4 and continuing to back up into the interior, and the door locks starting to stick in year 3, I have found that these problems are not uncommon for this type of vehicle. Despite these issues, I have chosen to keep the truck and have it repaired as needed.

The 2003 Dodge Dakota has unfortunately been a very problematic pickup truck for me. Despite my efforts to maintain it, I have experienced a multitude of issues, including problems with the airbag. The vehicle's 3.9 engine lacks power and the transmission has difficulty shifting gears. Additionally, the truck feels heavy and sluggish while driving. However, I am confident that with proper care and maintenance, these issues can be resolved.

I was able to purchase this truck for a great price of $300 from a relative's estate. Despite sitting for a year, it started right up and didn't smoke or tick. The 4x4 also worked perfectly. I knew the service history of the truck and was confident in its mechanical condition. The previous owner had put in a new front end (struts, bearings, ball joints, tie rods) and a new transmission, and always kept up with oil changes. Although it had 142,000 miles, they were relatively easy miles and the previous owner had owned it for 10 years. While it needed some cosmetic work such as quarter panels, bed painting, grill/headlight, and interior cleaning, I was impressed with its overall condition. However, I later discovered that these trucks are prone to rusting due to inferior metal. Despite some setbacks such as a blown transmission line and a broken valve spring, I was able to fix the issues myself with some affordable parts and a little bit of time. I even upgraded the spark plugs and oil/filter for good measure. Unfortunately, I later discovered that the leaf springs were also in need of replacement, but I am confident that with the right parts and labor, this truck will be back to its former glory in no time.I had an issue with the emergency brake release snapping off in my hand, but I was able to fix it with epoxy glue. While the radio in the truck has trouble picking up stations, the CD player is decent, although it can act up at times. On the bright side, the seats are very comfortable and the 4x4 mode is impressive. I appreciate the convenience of the 4wd on the fly, which eliminates the need for locking hubs. However, the truck's 3.92 rear axle ratio and weight of 4500 lbs. only allow for 14-15 mpg during daily driving, and premium fuel is a must for optimal performance. The valve springs are only single springs, which can lead to wear or breakage if the truck is not treated with care. Despite these issues, the truck always starts and rides nicely for a 4x4. I have had to replace the upper/lower ball joints and front struts, as well as the back springs/shackles, which has cost me nearly $3000 including insurance and title. While I have been a GM guy for 40 years, I have owned a few Ford and Chevy 4x4's and 2WD trucks, and one International 1 ton 2WD- and this Dodge is not as reliable as the others. I knew ahead of time that the brake lines were rotted out from sitting, so I had them replaced under the master cylinder. Additionally, the tailgate hinges are rotted out, but the top latches still hold the gate on.If you are considering a Dodge Dakota, it's important to look closely at these factors first. If you do decide to buy, try not to pay more than $500, unless it was garage kept with 60,000 miles or less. While these trucks may not run forever like a Chevy or Ford, they do have some great features. For example, they have a low price, ride nicely for a truck, and have 4x4 on the fly with no locking hubs. Additionally, the seats are comfortable. However, it's important to note that they do have some downsides. For instance, they have terrible gas mileage and frequent mechanical breakdowns over 100,000 miles. The construction quality can also be spotty due to inferior metallurgy and parts. While they may be cheap to buy, they can be expensive to repair and keep running.

Overall, this is a good truck except for the automatic transmission that slips all the time when passing.

Solid truck all around, small enough to drive everywhere, but as strong as full sized trucks. The high output V8 has loads of towing power. The gas mileage is average for a V8.

What an awesome truck! It's amazing that you got it for such a low price five years ago and it's still going strong after 13 Wisconsin winters. It even made it to Colorado and back and kept up with the Wranglers on the Jeep trails! It's so reliable, starting up every time you need it to, even in the coldest temperatures. Of course, after so many years, there are a few little things that need fixing, like the 4X4 light not coming on (but still working), a busted cigarette lighter, a parking brake cable that needs replacing, and no AC, but that's to be expected with an older truck. All things considered, it sounds like you've got a great vehicle on your hands. Thanks for sharing your experience! By the way, a Dakota sounds like a great choice for your next vehicle.

I love naming all of the vehicles I drive, and this one is no exception. It's appropriately named Pig, and I hope to pass it on to my favorite heir one day. :) Pig is an absolute joy to drive, with plenty of torque and speed. It has trailered everything I own several times over without complaint, and it looks even better than the current Dakota's. The only downsides I've experienced with Pig are the batteries (I just put in my 4th one this weekend) and the gas mileage (averaging 14 mpg), but that's to be expected with a 5.2 V-8. Oh, and there was a minor issue with an engine bearing during the build, but it was quickly resolved under warranty and Pig hasn't stalled, hiccuped, or let me down since.

You're going to love this! I bought my truck brand new with only 18 miles on it. It has a 4.7L engine with towing setup, and I can easily pull my 28-foot travel trailer that weighs 6300 lbs when loaded. The fuel mileage is great too, with 15/19 city/highway and 9/11 when pulling the trailer. I did have to get the rear differential gasket replaced under warranty at 23000 miles, and the front bumper was missing bolts when I purchased it, but overall it's been a dependable truck for the money. Unfortunately, my wife has taken it over and she loves it!

I did some research on this truck and it seems like the ratings I read are true. On the highway, at 71 mph and 65 degrees with little wind, I got around 19 mpg. The V8 engine has some great power. I opted for the Laramie package with the trailer tow package and the truck pulls 3000 lbs really well. I love the black metal flake paint with the chrome front end, it looks like a Harley truck. The truck gets a lot of looks and Dodge did a great job redesigning the front clip. The ride is pretty good for a pickup truck.
