2008 Dodge Dakota problems
The Dodge Dakota, known as the Ram Dakota for the final two years of production, is a mid-size pickup truck from Chrysler's Ram (formerly Dodge Truck) division. The first Dakota was introduced in late 1986 as a 1987 model. From its introduction through 2009, it was marketed under the Dodge brand, and for the final two years under the Ram brand.
The Dakota was sized above the compact Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10, but below the full-sized pickups such as Dodge's own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and a leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota was the first mid-size pickup with an optional V8 engine. For its entire production, the Dakota was built in Warren, Michigan.
The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-06-01
- VIN: 1D7HE42K66S
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THE LEFT TURN SIGNAL WORKS WHEN IT WANTS AND WHEN I TURN IT ON THE RIGHT TURN SIGNAL COMES ON. THE WIPERS AND THE HEADLIGHTS ARE CURRENTLY GOING OUT OR COMING ON BY THEMSELVES. I HAVE AN ERROR ON THE AIRBAGS (WHICH HAVE HAD THE DRIVERS REPLACED AND CURRENTLY AWAITING THE PASSENGERS, PLUS THE NEW RECALL ON THE HOSE TO THE AIR BAGS). THIS ISSUE STARTED AT AROUND 120K MILES. THE FUSES HAVE BEEN CHECKED AND PASSED. THE BULBS-REPLACED. THE SITUATION IS GETTING WORSE AS THE DASH AND INTERIOR LIGHTS DO NOT WORK. THE NIGHT LIGHTS WENT OUT WHEN I WAS DRIVING ONE NIGHT AND DO NOT DRIVE AFTER DUSK ANYMORE. ALL OF THIS HAPPENS DRIVING. THE TURNS DO IT WHETHER I AM MAKING A TURN OR PULLING OUT OR EVEN TESTING THEM PARKED. *TR
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-08-31
- VIN: 1D7HE38K58S
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: TURN SIGNAL ACTIVATES THE WRONG INDICATOR. WHEN THE TURN SIGNAL IS SET TO A LEFT TURN, THE RIGHT TURN INDICATORS FLASH, BOTH ON THE DASHBOARD AND ON THE EXTERIOR SIGNAL LAMPS. FROM A WEB SEARCH, THIS IS A RELATIVELY COMMON PROBLEM STEMMING FROM A FAULTY SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS SITUATION IS FAR MORE DANGEROUS THAN A SITUATION WHERE THE EXTERIOR LAMPS ARE NOT WORKING. BECAUSE THE WRONG INDICATOR FLASHES, OTHER DRIVER CAN MAKE ERRONEOUS DECISIONS ABOUT THE DRIVER'S INTENT, LEADING TO A SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER PROBABILITY OF A CRASH. THE SYMPTOMS ARE INTERMITTENT, BUT NOT LINKED TO STEERING WHEEL POSITION OR THE MOTION OF THE VEHICLE. THERE MIGHT BE A CORRELATION BETWEEN RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND THE ERROR - IT HAS NOT OCCURRED IN THE LAST 3 MONTHS OF DROUGHT AFTER IT BEGAN ON 8/31 UNTIL WE HAD EXPERIENCED A WEEK OF RAIN. BECAUSE OF THE LOCATION OF THE SWITCH, THE DEFECT IS QUITE COSTLY TO REPAIR, REQUIRING THE STEERING COLUMN TO BE BREACHED. I AM ASKING THAT THIS BE A VERY HIGH PRIORITY DUE TO THE DANGER POSED BY SIGNALLING THE ENTIRELY OPPOSITE INTENTION FROM THAT OF THE DRIVER. THIS IS NOT COSMETIC, IT IS A FAILURE OF A SAFETY SYSTEM ON THE VEHICLE THAT IS USED MORE FREQUENTLY THAN AN AIRBAG OR CRUMPLE ZONE. IT ALSO PUTS INNOCENT DRIVERS OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AT SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER RISK THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-11-29
- VIN: 1D7HW38K58S
- Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: MY FOUR WHEEL DRIVE IS ENGAGING ON IT'S OWN. THE SHIFT MOTOR ENGAGES WHILE THE VEHICLE IS PARKED AND TURNED OFF. THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE WILL ENGAGE ON IT'S OWN WHILE I AM DRIVING. I HAD THE VEHICLE TESTED AT A CERTIFIED GARAGE AND THE MECHANIC SAID THAT THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT MOTOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. AFTER RESEARCHING DODGE/CHRYSLER ISSUES, I HAVE FOUND THAT QUITE A FEW OTHERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE. THEY ALSO CHANGED THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT MOTOR AND THE PROBLEM WAS NOT RESOLVED. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT IF CHRYSLER IS GOING TO FIX THEIR ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE DODGE FOUR WHEEL DRIVES. *TR

After researching for a year, I finally found the perfect pick-up for my needs: the Dodge Dakota with V8. Its size and power make it ideal for supporting my fly fishing, weekend camping, and towing a small trailer. I was able to purchase the Sport Crew Cab with V8 for $26,800, including freight and tax, which was $1000 under invoice. Additionally, Dodge is currently offering a factory rebate of $5000 on 08 Crew Cabs. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

This truck is of high quality, however, it requires frequent repairs.

This little truck is equipped with the 4.7 at 302 hp and 329 ft. lb. of torque. It's just what Dodge needed to revive! Unless it comes back in a 4 cylinder Diesel!!! 😁👍👍👍👍👍

The ride of this model is firm, but not uncomfortable, and is a noticeable improvement from previous years. The console and cup holder layout is greatly improved and all controls are easily accessible. The vehicle runs quietly and has had very few quality issues in our fleet. If you require serious power, I would recommend the V8, but my 3.7L has been able to accelerate well and maintain highway speeds. Overall, we have had a positive experience with Dakotas and are hopeful that this series will continue to improve.

Since my last review, I have taken my Dakota on two out-of-state trips and pulled a 2800 lb. boat and trailer for fishing. I am happy to say that I now trust my truck. I can comfortably drive at 72 mph on the highway while pulling the boat with the A/C on. I may turn off the air on big hills. I was surprised to find that I can get 19mpg when using cruise control, despite having a heavy foot. I plan on getting 265 tires next spring, instead of the 245 stocked, if it's not an issue. Additionally, I plan on researching and getting another warranty, even though I already have a lifetime drivetrain warranty. Unfortunately, I know how businesses can be, and they would rather tell you to sue than help you out. It's all about money. I don't know of any other truck that can fit in my garage and has the power that I need. I used to trust Toyota, but not anymore. I am waiting for a wagon with power and good mileage.

I am confident in stating that my 2008 Dodge Dakota has had several minor issues while under warranty. Despite resetting the radio clock six times, it still does not work, and I have given up on turning it in for repairs. The rack and pinion, along with the power steering pump, went out at 37,400 miles, and it cost me $1,740 to fix it. The gas mileage averages around 16 to 18 miles per gallon on the open highway, with the 3.7 6-cylinder engine having low power, especially when going up small hills. Despite these issues, I still own a second Dodge Dakota. However, I do believe that the warranty should be better, as it is void if you go over 60 miles past the recommended oil change. I always keep up with the maintenance as per the book, but I had only 12 miles left before the warranty was voided when I turned mine in.

The 2008 Dakota has been a great truck so far! The V6 has a lot of low-end torque, but it may struggle going uphill or passing if the RPMs are not high enough. I have owned both 1st and 2nd generation Dakotas, and other than some brake issues, I have never had any problems with them.

The first night I owned the vehicle, I started it and noticed that the Variable Speed Fan was locked up, causing it to roar like an 18 wheeler. Additionally, there was a transmission problem where the vehicle would jolt when coming to a stop at 25 MPH. Despite multiple trips to the dealer, these issues were never resolved. Unfortunately, I had to get rid of the vehicle at 28,900 miles due to these persistent problems. It was a frustrating experience, but I hope to have better luck with my next vehicle.

I bought my 08 Dakota used with around 57,000 miles and it was in great shape with plenty of service records. However, over the past two years, I have had to replace several parts including balljoints, tie rods, wheel bearings, struts, calipers, fuel pump, rear end, transmission service (still slipping) and a new motor due to a rod knock. Unfortunately, the most recent issue is the steering rack + pinion and the power steering system is going bad. Despite my efforts to maintain it, this truck has proven to be unreliable, a gas hog, and an uncomfortable ride. While I have always been a Mopar fan, this experience has led me to reconsider my options for future purchases.
