1991 Mercury Sable problems
The Mercury Sable is a range of automobiles manufactured and marketed by the Mercury brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced on December 26, 1985, as the replacement for the Mercury Marquis, the Sable marked the transition of the mid-size Mercury product range to front-wheel drive.
Over its production span, the Sable was Mercury's badge-engineered counterpart to the Ford Taurus, below the Grand Marquis in the Mercury range. From the 1986 to 2005 model years, it was produced as a mid-size four-door sedan and five-door station wagon. For 2006, the Sable was replaced by the full-size Montego and mid-size Milan. It was reintroduced for 2008 as a full-size car, offered as a four-door sedan.
Because of declining sales, the Sable was discontinued after the 2009 model year, leaving no Mercury counterpart for the sixth-generation Taurus. The final Sable was produced on May 21, 2009; in total, 2,112,374 Sables were produced during its 1985–2005 production.

Common 1991 Mercury Sable problems
The Mercury Sable, manufactured by Ford Motor Company, was a popular sedan in North America from 1986 to 2005 and again from 2008 to 2009. The transmission system of a car, including the Mercury Sable, is a complex mechanical system that transmits power from the engine to the engine shaft. Due to the heat and friction generated by its many interacting and moving components, the transmission system is subjected to more wear and tear than other parts of the car.
Common Problems with the Mercury Sable 1991:
- Lack of response: In an automatic transmission, when you try to shift into drive or park, there is a delay before the gear is engaged. The same problem remains in a manual transmission, but the car does not move as fast as the engine sounds like.
- Leaking of Low fluid: The automatic transmission fluid conditions, cleans, and lubricates the seals. If the fluid becomes dark and has a burnt smell, changing or fluxing the same is required. Check the level of the fluid by the dipstick. If you find the level lower, there is leakage. Top up the fluid away.
- Humming, Whining, and Clunking: If you hear a buzzing, humming or clunking sound, it may be due to problems in the transmission. The manual transmission may make louder, mechanical, or abrupt sounds. The clunking sound may come while shifting the gears. If the clunking sound is coming from the underside of the car, there may be a problem in the differential.
- Burning Smell: The transmission system becomes too hot if the fluid breaks down because of the increased corrosive activities and friction. This may happen due to the buildup of additional debris or sludge. This may also be caused due to a lower level of fluid or poor quality of the fluid.
- Grinding and Shaking: Frequently check the level of the liquid. You may feel shaking or jerking while shifting into gear. Any grinding sound may be due to a problem with the gear. If the grinding sound comes after engaging the clutch, the clutch is either required to be adjusted or replaced.
- Worn out Gear synchronization: Worn out Gear synchronization may also be a reason for grinding sound.
- Check Engine Light: The check engine light is located on the dashboard of your car. It indicates if something wrong is going to happen or has already happened to the transmission system of your car. The sensors placed in different areas of the car engine alerts the computer of any unusual activity. The sensors can sense the slightest vibration or jerking.
- Solenoid Transmission Problems: The solenoid is an electrically controlled valve that directs fluid flow into the transmission. If it fails, the transmission can't shift properly.
- Transmission Slipping: Transmission slipping can be caused by low transmission fluid, worn out gears, or a damaged torque converter. It can cause the engine to rev higher than normal without a corresponding increase in speed.
- Transmission Noisy in Neutral: If the transmission is making noise while in neutral, it could be an indication of a problem with the transmission bearings or gears.
- Transmission Fluid Leaks: Transmission fluid leaks can be caused by worn out seals or gaskets, damaged transmission pan, or a cracked torque converter. It can lead to transmission failure if not addressed promptly.
In conclusion, the Mercury Sable 1991, like any other car, can have transmission problems that can affect its performance and longevity. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any unusual sounds or sensations in the transmission system can help prevent major transmission problems and extend the life of the car.

1991 Mercury Sable recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1991 Mercury Sable.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, KANSAS, KENTUCKY, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGNIA, AND WISCONSIN. THE REAR LOWER SUBFRAME MOUNT PLATE NUT CAN EXPERIENCE STRESS CORROSION CRACKING IF SUBJECTED TO LONG TERM EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. THIS CAN RESULT IN FRACTURE AND LOSS OF THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME MOUNT ATTACHMENT. DETACHMENT OF THE BODY MOUNTS AT THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME, WHICH SUPPORTS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION, ALLOWS THE REAR CORNERS OF THE SUBFRAME TO DROP.
- Consequence: IF BOTH REAR CORNERS DROP, STEERING WOULD BECOME SUDDENLY VERY DIFFICULT, AFFECTING VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL SUBFRAME REAR MOUNT BOLTS, REINFORCEMENT PLATES, AND PLATE NUTS.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3.8L ENGINES AND ORIGINALLY SOLD OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, IOWA, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KANSAS, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, MONTANA, NORTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, SOUTH DAKOTA, VERMONT, WISCONSIN, AND WYOMING. WATER CAN ACCUMULATE WITHIN THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE CONDUIT. IF ENOUGH WATER ACCUMULATES, IT COULD FREEZE WITHIN A LOW AREA OF THE CABLE ROUTING WHEN EXPOSED TO A LONG TERM COLD SOAK AT TEMPERATURES AT LEAST SEVERAL DEGREES BELOW FREEZING.
- Consequence: DRIVER CONTROL OF VEHICLE SPEED USING THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM OR THE ACCELERATOR CONTROL SYSTEM WOULD BE DIMINISHED INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL ADD A BOOT TO THE SPEED CONTROL CABLE.
- Manufacturer: MONROE AUTO CORP.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SHOCK ABSORBER
- Summary: THE ARC WELDS ON THE SWAY BAR BRACKET, WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE STRUT RESERVE TUBE, DID NOT FUSE PROPERLY.
- Consequence: OVER TIME, A PORTION OF THE BRACKET CAN TEAR AWAY FROM THE STRUT, FALLING INTO AND PUNCTURING THE TIRE OR CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: MONROE DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STRUT FREE OF CHARGE.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: CHILDREN CAN ACCIDENTALLY LOCK THEMSELVES IN THE FOOTWELL AREA OF THE REAR-FACING THIRD SEAT, OR IN THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT IN STATION WAGONS NOT EQUIPPED WITH AN OPTIONAL THIRD SEAT. ONCE THE COMPARTMENT IS CLOSED IT CANNOT BE OPENED FROM THE INSIDE.
- Consequence: THERE IS A DANGER OF AIR DEPRIVATION, HYPERTHERMIA,AND/OR PANIC RESPONSE TO A CHILD WHO HAS LOCKED HIMSELF OR HERSELF INTO THECOMPARTMENT, WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF ASPHYXIATION.
- Remedy: REPLACE THE SELF-LATCHING ASSEMBLY CURRENTLY USED IN THE REAR STORAGE COMPARTMENT WITH A LATCH ASSEMBLY THAT CAN ONLY BE CLOSED WITH A KEY.
- Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:FOUNDATION COMPONENTS:DISC:ROTOR
- Summary: FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS OF THE SUBJECT VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE SEVERE CORROSION IF OPERATED IN AREAS WHERE CALCIUM CHLORIDE AND SODIUM CHLORIDE ARE USED EXTENSIVELY.
- Consequence: SEVERELY CORRODED ROTORS MAY FRACTURE OR SEPARATE NEARTHE INNER EDGES OF THE BRAKE DISCS RESULTING IN REDUCED BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS,HIGHER THAN NORMAL PEDAL EFFORTS, LOUD GRINDING NOISES, AND MODERATE PULLS WHENTHE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. REDUCED BRAKING EFFECTIVENESS MAY INCREASE MINIMUMSTOPPING DISTANCES, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: REPLACE FRONT BRAKE ROTORS WITH FULL CAST FRONT BRAKE ROTORS.

The car was generally reliable, but unfortunately had some issues when turning right. There was always a loud rusty noise and popping sound, which I was told was due to the rotor being welded to something. Additionally, the front passenger tire had a tendency to blow out and require replacement.
-
This is a great comfortable car. It runs, drives, and rides well. Although I bought it used with over 100k miles, I have invested in it by replacing the head gasket, radiator, starter, and brakes. Despite the blown head gasket being a common issue with these cars, I still believe it is a wonderful car.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this amazing car that I bought used with 80000 miles on it. It has a terrific little 3.0L engine and has been a wonderful car so far. I am happy to report that even with 165000 miles plus on it, it's still going strong! Over the years, I have only had to do minor ordinary repairs such as stuts, inner tierod ends, fluid changes, tires, belts, and hoses. I have gotten as much as 28mpg with it, but even now, I am still happy with a respectable 24 at 165000. Not too bad, huh? Thank you for letting me share my experience with you!

Your car has a great history! It was originally purchased by your grandmother in 1990 and then your neighbors bought it after her passing in '99. Your parents then bought it back for you as your first car and you've been driving it for nearly 3 years now. It's been very reliable and comfortable, which all of your friends appreciate when they catch a ride with you. Despite having over 130,000 miles on it and 12-13 years of wear and tear, it still has great gas mileage and has only needed a few minor repairs. The only downside is that it may not be the most stylish car for a teenager to drive around in! Overall, it sounds like a great car that has served you well.
-
I'm glad to hear that you have a reliable car! Sables from the early 90s are known for their dependability, just like most Ford cars. They get great highway mileage for a sedan, and with regular maintenance, they're a great choice for everyday transportation. It's great to hear that you haven't had any major repairs, and it sounds like the previous owners took good care of it too.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my car. It's been a bit of a challenge driving the 35 miles to work every day, but I'm grateful to have it. Of course, like any car, it's had its fair share of issues. I've had to replace the struts and do some motor work, and even had trouble with the trunk latch and cassette player. Unfortunately, the air conditioning compressor pump froze up after only 3 months of use, and there's an expensive oil leak that requires pulling the motor to repair. Despite these setbacks, I still manage to get a decent 27 miles per gallon. Overall, it may not be perfect, but I'm thankful for my trusty car.

I was wondering if Ford has any plans to improve the design of their transmissions to prevent them from failing. Additionally, I have noticed that many 3.8L engines seem to have issues with cracked heads before reaching 80k miles. Is this something that Ford is working on addressing?
Leonel Williamson 2024-09-15
I had an '89 Sable, but they're basically the same through '94. The head gasket went out at 90,000 miles and the transmission was completely shot at 110,000. After many months and thousands of dollars fixing it, I would recommend avoiding any Taurus/Sable prior to a '95 model. Do yourself a favor!

It seems like there have been quite a few issues with the power lately. Every month, something needs to be replaced.
