1992 Oldsmobile Achieva problems

oldsmobile logo

The Oldsmobile Achieva is a front-wheel drive compact sedan and coupe that was introduced by Oldsmobile for the 1992 model year. The Achieva was based on the GM N-body platform, which it also shared with its siblings the Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. The Achieva replaced the GM N-body Cutlass Calais after its final 1991 model year, and ended production after the 1998 model year.

Overview

The Achieva is a compact car produced by the General Motors' Oldsmobile division from 1991 until 1998 and was available as a sedan or coupe. It was offered in four different trim levels during its production run: S, SC, SL, and SCX. Available engines included different versions of the Oldsmobile-developed 2.3 L Quad 4 engine: the base single-cam L40 "Quad OHC", the DOHC LD2, the high-output LG0, and the special "W41" variant of the LG0 Quad 4 used in the SCX model. All were replaced for 1996 by a revised 2.4 L version. A pair of V6 engines were also offered including the Buick-sourced 90° 3.3 L "3300" V6, which was later replaced by Chevrolet's 60° 3.1 L "3100" V6. While a 5-speed manual transaxle was initially offered as the standard base transmission, most Achieva models were sold with 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transaxles. 1998 was the final model year for the Achieva, after which it was replaced in the Oldsmobile lineup by the Alero for the 1999 model year.

Initial production

The Achieva was first seen as a concept car at the 1991 Chicago Auto Show, positioned to replace Oldsmobile's compact Calais models. The Calais and Achieva share the same front wheel drive N-body architecture including identical wheelbase. The Achieva started regular production for the 1992 model year. It was offered in four different trim levels: S and SL, available on both coupes and sedans, and the sporty SC and SCX coupes. The base S offered a 120 hp (89 kW) 2.3 L "Quad OHC" 4-cylinder, while the SL had the DOHC 160 horsepower (120 kW) Quad 4 engine standard that was optional on the S model. A 160 hp (120 kW) 3.3 L V6 engine was optional for the SL. The SC coupe had a standard 180 hp (130 kW) high-output Quad 4 with 5-speed manual transmission or a 3 speed automatic, with the 3.3 L V6 being an option.

What happened to the Oldsmobile Achieva?

While a 5-speed manual transaxle was initially offered as the standard base transmission, most Achieva models were sold with 3-speed or 4-speed automatic transaxles. 1998 was the final model year for the Achieva, after which it was replaced in the Oldsmobile lineup by the Alero for the 1999 model year.

What caused Oldsmobile failure?

Oldsmobile, one of the oldest American car brands, faced challenges that ultimately led to its downfall. Similar to Plymouth and Pontiac, Oldsmobile suffered from a lack of brand identity and differentiation (as you might see, there is an area-curing mistake in every example so far).

Why did GM get rid of Oldsmobile?

The Aurora caused only a minor stir, however, and by 2000 GM announced plans to phase out the Oldsmobile brand due to dwindling sales. On April 29, 2004, after 106 years, the last Olds rolled off the assembly line.

What is a super car car?

The definition of a supercar describes an expensive car that's flashy, fast, luxurious, and prestigious. Think of a supercar as top of the line — the best of the best. While insurers have their definitions for supercars, you can generally expect to pay more for auto insurance if you own a luxury vehicle.

What car is titanium?

– Titanium Ford is a top-of-the-line trim level offered by the Ford Motor Company. – It is known for its premium features, advanced technology, and upscale design elements. – Titanium models are typically available across various car segments, including sedans, SUVs, and crossovers.

Which is the No 1 super car?

The top spot for the world's fastest supercar goes to Bugatti. In 2019, pilot Andy Wallace railed a tweaked-version of the 1,600 hp, 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged Chiron Super Sport around the Ehra-Lessien track.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-08-24
  • VIN: 1G3NL543XNM
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THIS VENICLE HAS STARTED TO OVERHEAT AFTER GOING SHORT DISTANCES. I HAVE HAD IT SERVICED TWICE WITH IN THE LAST FOUR (4) MONTHS. THE FISRT TIME 8/24/99 AND THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO ENGINE OVERHEATING. I HAD THE VALVE COVER GASKET AND TIMING COVER REPLACED FRO A TOTAL COST OF $692.10. THE SECOND OCCURENCE WAS DUE TO ENGINE OVERHEATING AS WELL. ON THIS OCASSION THE HEAD HAD TO REPLACED DUE TO A CRACK ON THE ALU. HEAD. THE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO FIND A REPLACEMENT HEAD BECAUSE ALL OF THE ONES HE COULD FIND ALL HAD THE SAME FAILURE IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA. I PURCHASED A NE W UNIT DIRECTLY FROM GM AND THE CAR WAS REPAIRED AFTER 2 1/2 WEEKS AND $856 LATER. MY OPINION IS THAT THE ALUMINUM HEAD IN QUESTION HAS A DESIGN DEFECT IN THE AREA WHERE THE CRACK OCCURED. I HAVE NOTED OTHER CONSUMERS WITH THE SAME STORY ANF TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR AND MODEL/ENGINE TYPE. I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THERE IS SOME SOME KIND OF CONSIDERATION BACK TO THE CONSMER FOR CASH OUT OF POCKET FOR THE LISTED HEAD FAILURES. VICTOR M. MARRUFO *AK

Negative 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva car reviews

  1. Grant Bauch 2024-10-09

I really appreciate the car's heavy steering, which offers semi-decent feel. Although it doesn't respond quickly and has excessive body roll, it still manages to handle well. The ca. 160 hp. Quad 4 accelerates decently, but not outstandingly. Unfortunately, the braking system is poor. On the bright side, the exterior styling is the one thing I like about this car. The unusual, wedgy shape is especially sleek with the spoiler and 16

Positive 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva car reviews

  1. Ottis Berge 2024-09-24

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I've had a bit of trouble with my car recently. Specifically, it seems to stall when I come to a complete stop after driving it for about 15 minutes. However, I did some research and found out that this is a common issue with the solenoid sticking when the car gets hot. I've taken it to my mechanic twice already, but unfortunately it's still stalling on me. I'm hoping that my mechanic can figure out what's going on and fix it for good this time!

  2. Quincy Weimann 2024-05-01

The vehicle has delivered excellent performance for 10 years without any engine work and no oil consumption. The maintenance costs have been very low. Although the driver and front passenger seating is uncomfortably low, the ride is comfortable. The 'Check Gage' light turns on and off intermittently, but there is no engine problem cause. Overall, I am very satisfied with the vehicle.

  3. Rosendo Kris 2024-04-05

I recently purchased this car from a friendly neighbor who does minor fix ups and sells them. After investing around $300 to ensure it was running safely, I'm happy to say it was worth it! Despite sitting unused for a year, the car still has its horsepower, is comfortable to drive, and impressively doesn't use up fluids even with 183,000 miles. Overall, I'm really pleased with my purchase!

  4. Derek Frami 2024-01-22

I really appreciate your review of this car! It sounds like you had a great experience with it. The H/O dual cam 2.4 with 5 speed seems to have made a big difference in both performance and driving enjoyment. It's always nice to have a car that not everyone else has, and it sounds like the Achieva fits that bill. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this car!
